1. 'The Catch', Milwaukee version: http://i18.ebayimg.com/01/i/05/8b/62/7f_1.JPG
2. Reyes when healthy is a better player than Fielder. We will have to agree to disagree on that one. I just don't see it. Reyes is a speed guy with slightly above average power for a shortstop. He doesn't seem to be better than average defensively either. He's a very exciting player, no doubt- but extremely overrated in my book. I see him as being this year's Carl Crawford, and I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.
3. I hear the argument about Fielder not aging well, but how can he be less of an injury concern than Reyes? Reyes has missed more games in the past week plus due to injury than Prince has in his career. Going further, Reyes only real discernible elite skill is his speed. Speed guys generally don't age well either, and Reyes will be north of 30 for the bulk of his contract. Frankly, I think Reyes is going to be a major bust for whoever signs him. I'd take Jimmy Rollins over him without a thought, but I don't think the Phillies will let him get away. I'd definitely look into Furcal for about a tenth of what Reyes is going to get.... he certainly doesn't look 'done' to me, like a lot of people said back at the trade deadline.
4. Wow, there was something to this afterall. Look at the 11 season stretch from 1983 to 1993. 1-14 with the only win the aforementioned Righetti blow up. Thanks again for the list, I've been to a handful of these games.
5. You are the man, onlinetopper09er! I've been looking for such a list forever. Thank you very much. On a related off topic note, didn't Frank Thomas debut in the same game as Fernandez? A Friday twi-night doubleheader I believe.
6. This 'struggle against guys making their first start' thing has been going on since I've been following the team. Thanks for the list... I'd love to see it going back to the 70's. I went to one at County that has always stuck in my mind, in I believe 1989. A couple of buddies and I were talking about this phenomenon over a few pops in the parking lot when we saw Dave Eiland was pitching. One buddy disagreed and started talking smack when Molitor lit him up with a leadoff homer. I think that was the only hit that he gave up (maybe one or two more), but Righetti came in and blew the game.
7. I would guess that it's pretty rare when the ball catches no bat. Does the ball become dead immediately after hitting skin or if it gets part of a finger and part of the bat, is it live?
8. If I'm going to spend $100 million on a player, it had better be Prince or Greinke. Though he's having a career year at the plate in a contract year, Reyes just isn't that good. Look at his career stats.
9. I agree with those who say that the hand is part of the bat if you offer at the pitch.
10. That was a cut and dried bunting situation. The problem is that the corner infielders were playing about 20 feet from the plate. At that point, even I would have probably had Yuni hack away, if for no other reason than increasing the odds that Pujols takes a line drive off his noggin. As for Yuni bunting, he got the bunt down- albeit in a way you are taught in little league not to do- there have been occaisions this season where Counsell couldn't even get a bunt down.
11. He is an idiot, he doesn't understand anything about baseball and his only asset is that the players like him and are "having fun", as if they wouldn't be having fun if someone else was in charge of this roster that is playing .600 baseball. The Brewers were playing .600 baseball for a spell with Macha, and they didn't seem to be having much fun.
12. Does the 'scorekeeping girl' keep a pitch chart or something too? When the fans are standing, she turns to her seat every pitch. I've got to think that this is some type of publicity stunt. I haven't noticed her for too long, and I'm assuming you don't just waltz into seats like that- not to mention the enormous cost (even for one seat).
13. Their career stats are almost equal in ERA and WHIP (Wolf is a tad better in both). Wandy strikes out a slightly higher rate, but he walks a slightly higher rate as well. As far as park differentials and defense, Miller Park is by no means a pitcher's haven, and all I see are threads knocking the Brewers horrible defense. When you consider they have very similar stuff, I think the comparison between Wolf and Wandy is pretty valid. Neither is worth 8 figures to a hundred loss team. Wolf is quite a bit older, but I think that's neutralized by the fact that you will be on the hook for 2 or possibly 3 more years with Rodriguez.
14. And to the Bonds comment, he had Jeff Kent, a former MVP, hitting behind him. Bonds walked a lot because he had a very good eye, elite bat speed, and incredible power. Pitchers pitched around him while at the same time he only swung at mistakes. Bonds hit cleanup quite a bit when Kent was there as well. I don't really have the time or inclination to look it up, but I'd be willing to bet that Bonds walked at a higher clip when he hit cleanup and/or after Kent left. In my view, there's no way that Braun wouldn't walk more if he was hitting ahead of Casey McGehee.
15. Due to the timing of the leaked info, my guess is this process happened late last week or early this week. At the time, Atlanta was either tied with or ahead of the Brewers (I have no clue how priority goes in the case of a tie). At any rate, this isn't Randy Myers or Rios. Berkman is owed about the cost of one Suppan start, really it's pretty piddly- kind of a moot point since the Brewers aren't getting him anyway. I just don't want the Braves getting him. Think if the roles were reversed and the Brewers were 10.5 back right now with pending free agent Berkman in the fold. I guarantee that there would be a thread 'should we trade Berkman? I'd be surprised if that discussion didn't move towards Atlanta pitching prospects at some point like the Corey Hart thing last year.

17. Guarantee next year without Prince Braun will walk 90+ times. Its not as important as some make it out to be but it does exist. Exactly. Why do people think Bonds had such insane walk totals in SF?
18. I guess I can't believe that we're debating the sanity or otherwise of a scenario that would never in a million years have happened. You guys just aren't getting the point. I will agree with you that there is no way that the Brewers would get him under any scenario. Thus this does not come into play.... If he were to assume a starting role, I would think the move is great, but if they did this and he's used as a pinch hitter I think $1.3 is a bit much when we're trying to re-sign Fielder The main point here is to block him from Atlanta (regardless of where they are in the waiver pecking order) or Philly. Such a trade is unlikely but possible. Why not render it impossible?
19. Next time I go to a game if I don't hear 'I Wanna Be Rich' by Calloway, I'm going to be extremely upset.

21. Fielder has only played in 12 more games than Braun this year, so I'm not sure this is a big deal.Honestly, it's like choosing one of the Doublemint twins to go on a date with. You can't go wrong either way. Just from watching the games this year, I'd say Prince has been slightly more valuable. He carried the team early and mid season when they were fighting for position. He gets props from me for rarely missing any time whatsoever. How many innings has the guy missed in the past 3 years? Clearly, Braun has been better in July and August, and as above, he's going to get 30/30 so that will help him. Additionally, if he gets the batting title it's probably a done deal. Gun to my head today, I still vote Prince, but that could change soon.
22. I hope it hits the news wire that the Brewers put Braun on waivers and nobody claimed him and a bunch of fans from other teams ask why they didn't claim him. The answer would be as obvious as it is for Berkman. I disagree, the two cases aren't similar at all in my view. You didn't see me complaining on the David Wright thread, did you? That one is as obvious as Braun. Berkman is a free agent in a few months. Why did Houston trade him last August? I believe the Yankees got a comp pick for him, did they not? Berkman had a much longer background in Houston than he does in St. Louis. Though the odds are fairly low, I would not be shocked at all if he was traded.
23. I honestly dont know how you can have Prince ahead of Braun unless his being hurt has that much bearing. I've got to give Prince the edge slightly because he plays every day. I think there is something to be said about that when you are talking 'valuable'. To me, defense has no bearing, unless the guy is really good. That doesn't apply here. Honestly even for me, this is getting really close, because Prince has been slumping over the past week plus, not to mention he hasn't been hitting homers the second half- he's is going to need a hot streak, or Braun will probably overtake him soon.
24. Wow. So much for trying to buy a scalped WS ticket. For that kind of cash, if the Brewers make the Series, they had better be resigning Prince.
25. Agreed. It's not about the Brewers getting him, it's about keeping the Braves from getting him. Like I said, above, this seems like the type of move that the Braves (or Phillies) would make. Lets say the Cards are 11.5 back on Tuesday night. Why wouldn't they move Berkman if the Brewers magic number is down to 16 or something? Melvin's culpability in this all depends on when Berkman was placed on waivers. If it had been three weeks ago, I might give him a pass, but based on the press reports it has been in the past week. Melvin was foolish not to put in the claim.
