  1. It's more like $400,000 at this point. For a guy who has made nearly $20 million over is career, that is not much. How much did Gil Meche leave on the table? Counsell should approach the team about retiring. Chances are he would get that money either outright or with some gig for the team. Gritty battlers are always in demand for coaching jobs.
  2. Brewers pitchers basically never make it back on the initial timetable, although that seems to be the case all over baseball. Generally, the hitters have fared a little better, though I can't think of any cases where anyone significantly beat the original estimate back.
  3. Agreed. Mike Schmidt even knew enough to hang them up mid-season. I understand that no one wants to go out like this, but does Counsell actually think that he's going to go on a tear, become a postseason hero and go out on top? If so, he's fooling himself- if not, he's only in it for the money, and that's pathetic. As for the 'Brewers icon' and 'Wisconsin boy' thing, I guess that I don't see how he's a Brewer icon. Cecil Cooper was a Brewers icon, and it ended ugly in '87. I don't think he played after June, though he was on the active roster. I also remember reading that he refused several opportunities to go into the game to pinch hit that season. Nearly 25 years ago and that is mostly forgotten, so it's not how he is remembered. As for the Wisconsin angle I've mentioned the Augie thing. He pitched for the team starting right before they got good and had been around for several years by '82, when he was unceremoniously dumped from the post-season roster. I'm pretty sure the next season, he spent a lot of time in Vancouver (AAA). A true Brewer's icon/Wisconsin boy combo was Jim Gantner. He was basically forced out by the Brewers after rehabbing a knee issue in '93/'94 (Bando must have thought that Billy Doran was the answer), the Brewers offered him a 1B coaching job to save face.
  4. How often do you watch Beckham play? The talent is still absolutely there. I think you tend to look at stat lines and little else. Beckham still has star written all over him. He was rushed to the big leagues, but he has great bat speed, and he has a tenacity to him, ala, Rickie Weeks. Just a hard nosed guy. I love Beckham and believe he can be a .300/.375/.500 type player. And he's still what, 25 years old? I'd take Beckham everyday over Ramirez. Actually, I'm just the opposite. I rely more on the sniff test than stats. I will admit that I haven't watched Beckham play extensively, but when I do watch White Sox games, I haven't been impressed with Beckham. Yes, I know that he was great in college, so were a lot of guys. Players with better skill sets have failed. I'm sure he will have a few decent seasons, but why would the Brewers give up a lot for him- especially considering he's playing second now? Heck, maybe I'm wrong, and he'll blossom like Weeks has. The career paths are pretty similar thus far. When Weeks was in his third season, a lot of folks wanted to run him out of town. In Chicago ( at least based on the internet pundits and radio talk shows) they still overvalue Beckham. I don't think he's lived up to the hype, and there's been lots of it.
  5. That seems like a foolish move on his part, but if that's the case, I could get on board. As a rental, there isn't too much risk.
  6. His agent probably got in his ear about a clause vesting the option if he agrees to a trade. The Cubs would have to kick in money (a big chunk of what they are on the hook for- rest of this year + buyout) for me to even consider that.
  7. Furcal would be enough. There are internal options to fill third base. I still like the idea of Ty Wigginton though. He'd provide a decent bat on the bench, and is signed for next year. He could shift over to first and platoon with Gamel next season.
  8. My memory is a little better than I thought. A Google search revealed this: http://articles.nydailyne...litter-spit-hideki-irabu
  9. My only real memory of Irabu is that I was at that game and it was the only time I ever sat along the first base side in County Stadium. I believe that he got knocked around a little and the fans were on him pretty good. Do you remember him doing anything? I'm thinking that I may have combined this game with another incident he was involved in.
  10. I remember him starting a Sunday night ESPN game against the Brewers right after he signed. I believe that he spit at the fans or something.
  11. I'm hoping that they'll try to protect him from getting the record either by getting him to retire or putting him on the DL.
  12. Well the obvious answer is that he stinks and people just fondly remember his half a season here that was largely meaningless in the grand scheme given the state of the pitching staff. That was 2 years ago. It's not like it was back in 2004 or something. Lopez is definitely an upgrade over Counsell. He has more hits this season despite spending most of the year in the minors. The 'clubhouse cancer' bit is overplayed too. I don't remember hearing one bad thing about him.
  13. Do the Brewers have to keep Farris for 24 hours or something before they demote him? They should at least get him an at bat for his trouble.
  14. The Weeks injury likely bought him some time until the rosters expand on September 1. If another infielder is added, no doubt he should go. Maybe he'll get 'hurt'. I wonder if the Brewers would protect him from the 0-47 record if he gets close- a la Royster protecting Jose K from the whiff record. Fans need to start bringing countdown signs to the games or something.
  15. I think there's still a spot for Furcal because Lopez will probably be used mostly at 2nd. The way Betancourt has been hitting, I'm not sure if Melvin will make the move or not. I'm glad that he did something, though.
  16. Beckham was bad defensively at 3rd. That's why he's playing second now.
  17. Beckham has regressed the past few years. He's young-ish, but I don't think he's going to match the hype. He's really only been a tad better than McGehee this year, and I don't think that the difference is worth the haul that the White Sox would likely want for him.
  18. With Weeks gone, there are really only 3 legitimate power guys in the lineup: Prince, Braun, Hart. I wouldn't call any of the other guys power hitters. This doesn't even take into account the fact that the bench has very little power either.
  19. Yes, but his slugging percentage is pretty bad- lower than his OBP. Remember, it takes 4 walks to score a run (or 3 singles... maybe 4 if Prince/McGehee get the first).
  20. I thought the talks for Carroll broke down because they couldn't come to an agreement on prospects. I sure hope that Melvin doesn't cave and give them way to much for him. I don't understand why he covets Carroll so much anyway. The only other team that I've read having interest in him is Cleveland....hopefully they step up to the plate and get him.
  21. There was talk a few weeks back that the Dodgers would be trying Furcal at 2B. He hasn't played there yet, but I wonder if he's capable or not. He seems like a textbook LaRussa acquisition to me. Maybe his manlove for Eckstein will carry over and he will want Carroll though.
  22. This makes way too much sense to actually happen. I'm surprised that the Reds wouldn't be interested in him.
