  1. I think you're giving Fielder to much credit. His bat is without a doubt top 5 in the league, but he is a bad defender at first base. I hear you on the defense, but I think that he still gets MVP if the season ends now. Braun has been catching up a little. I'm a homer, but I'd vote them 1-2 right now. I don't think splitting the vote will be an issue, because the writers go 1st to 10th.
  2. If people didn't care about defense when it comes to awards, Ryan Braun would have unanimously won NL Rookie of the Year. This was probably at least partially due to the fact that for whatever reason, Tulo is 2nd in the NL behind Pujols in manlove. I'll give you that Braun was absolutely horrible at third, so I'm sure that did play a role. McCutchen is a fantastic defensive centerfielder with an OPS higher than the average MLB first baseman. He's a great, great player. I wouldn't go that far. He's good, but not great. He's just gotten a lot of play this season because he was the 'face' of the media's feel good team of the year.
  3. I'd love to give him a look as back of the rotation depth, but it's not going to happen. Frankly, if I'm Sheets, I'd just retire. He's got a pile of money and got roughly half a season last time he rehabbed for a year. It's not like he's going to break the bank.
  4. I'd give it to Upton before Fielder. Heck, I'd give it to any of Upton, Tulowitzki, Braun, Kemp, or McCutchen before Fielder. Fielder has been marginally better at the plate, but Upton is a much better defender and RF is definitely the more difficult position to play. Defense is generally meaningless when it comes to the MVP debate. Maybe it comes into play if there is a tossup between two guys with pretty much the same offensive stats. Prince has Upton by a good clip in OPS and is ahead in all the Triple Crown categories. I don't see how you could have watched the Brewers play all season and not say Prince is MVP. He hasn't done too much since the break, but he carried the team for the better part of the first half. I don't see where McCutchen has any place in the discussion. Look at his stats, he's one of the most overhyped players in the bigs right now. He's good, but nowhere near as good as you would think from listening to the press. Melky Cabrera is arguably having a better season, and you don't hear anything about him.
  5. "The numbers say: Tulowitzki" This is enough to make me discount everything else this guy is saying. Fielder is beating him in nearly every offensive category. I'm assuming that he's going by WAR.
  6. Heard this on the golf tourney today (EJ, Jr. had been on the broadcast squad). Yet another member of the Milwaukee Braves World Series teams has passed away. We are losing these guys at an alarming rate, this is at least the 5th that I know of in the past few years. RIP. http://www.reuters.com/ar.../13/idUS8413402520110813
  7. Integrity? Please. It's called common sense. I'd love to see you walk away from tens of millions of dollars. I never said that I have any integrity..... That said, some guys (a very small percentage) have walked away with money on the table- Meche, Mike Schmidt, Barry Sanders, etc. Comparing Zambrano with these guys just shows what a stupid move that this is. A few guys have pulled similar stunts, but they always come back. Yount was talking 'retirement' back in the late 70's, but he wasn't under contract. If Crazy Z doesn't show up tonight look for things to get ugly. I'm sure the Cubs would be stoked to get out from under that ugly contract, so I'm sure the players union, etc. will get involved.
  8. I see that Captain Jack has already been arrested before ever suiting up for the Bucks. I'll still take him over Salmons/Maggette though.
  9. I don't know if it's just baseball, I know that personally, I've complained about the personalities of coaches in other teams. Perhaps it's due to the long grind of a baseball season. These guys are with each other sometimes 24-7 for over 7 months. I think it would be impossible for personalities not to play a role. It just seemed that the last two seasons, the team wasn't having much fun- right from the start. I'll go back to my personal analogy about bosses, in that some of the 'smartest' were also the worst because their people skills left a lot to be desired. Maybe it's a personal flaw, but I won't, shall we say, 'go the extra mile' for someone that I don't like. Judging from co-workers I've had over the years though, it seems to be pretty common.
  10. In 2009 and 2010, the team underachieved. This season, I think they have overachieved. What is there not to like? Yes I know that Kenny didn't have the pitching, but at this point, the Brewers are 13 games ahead of where they were last season and 10 games ahead of 2009. People will nitpick anything, but like I said a while back, Roenicke's personality is a huge intangible.
  11. No way will this moron retire. In the end it comes down to $$$$ for most, and Zambrano has never struck me as someone with high integrity a la Meche.
  12. King looked like Gilbert Brown out there in his last stint with the Brewers. There is no coming back from that.
  13. I think this is way premature. That said, perfect world they'd clinch with about 5 games or so to go. Not early enough to lose the drive, but not late enough to have to stress things out.
  14. I hated Nyjer Morgan's guts.........until he was a Brewer. And again, most non-Brewer fans think Ryan Braun is a pretty big douche. I just don't get why everyone's so concerned about the guy being a cocky 21 year old, and why they think that has anything to do with the value of this trade. Because he hasn't done a thing yet. He's now proven himself now to be a d-bag both on and off the field. I would guess that will not endear himself to his teammates down the road. There is a difference between cockiness and douchiness. Probably not a good thing he has such a big head, because he will be humbled- probably sooner than later. Will he be mature enough to deal with it?
  15. He's off to a heck of a start, so the second guessers could be out in force in about 2-3 years. That said, he comes as advertised- a world class d-bag.
  16. Funny onion article. Like I said a few weeks ago, these guys reminded me of the '95 or '97 Brewers. I was amazed at the time that acquiring studs like Paul Wagner and Julio Franco didn't put them over the top. Back in '97, I thought Harnisch sealed the deal (no kidding).
  17. Everyone makes errors like that at some point. I'll give you that it was a bonehead play, but it was kind of an awkward play with the ball and the runner coming at the same time right near the bag. I can't think of one game that Betancourt has directly cost the team this season due to poor fielding. It seems that there may have been one game where he made an error and the opponent scored about 5 runs with the extra out, but that's all that comes to mind. Last year, Escobar made a handful of crucial errors that directly led to a loss.
  18. At baseball-ref offensive WAR = Runs above average from batting, base running, reaching on errors, avoiding DPs, positional adjustments and replacement level.Escobar: Year Age Tm Lg PA Rbat Rbaser Rroe Rdp Rfield Rpos Rrep RAR WAR oRAR oWAR dWAR 2011 24 KCR AL 437 -17 1 1 2 11 6 15 18 1.8 7 0.7 1.1So just from batting he is 17 runs below average, but when you add everything together for offense you get to 7 runs above replacement, for 0.7 oWAR. Yuni looks like this: Year Age Tm Lg PA Rbat Rbaser Rroe Rdp Rfield Rpos Rrep RAR WAR oRAR oWAR dWAR 2011 29 MIL NL 405 -10 1 -2 -1 -4 5 11 -0 0.0 4 0.4 -0.4Yuni is at 10 runs below average from batting, and comes out to 4 runs above replacement on offense, for 0.4 WAR The main differences is that Escobar gets 15 runs to Yunis 11 runs from replacement level because the AL is a stronger league so league average in the AL means you are further from replacement level than in the NL. The average NLer is worse than the average ALer. Escobar also has a little more playing time which helps because WAR is also a counting stat dependent on playing time. This is why Escobar get 6 positional runs to Yuni's 5. Thank you for the reply. I figured that it had to be partially league based or something. Also didn't know the different baseball sites calculated WAR differently.
  19. Again, does anybody know why Escobar has such a high offensive WAR on baseball reference, is it league based or something? And as for Greinke, I never panicked. As I've said, I was just glad to dump stiffs like Escobar (who was in my view one of the worst regular players in Brewers history in 2010) and Jeffress. Cain will probably be a good not great player and Odorizzi is a coin flip (probably worse had he stayed considering the Brewers historical luck with young pitchers).
  20. My argument is that Betancourt is better than Escobar at this point in time. Can one of the stats guys explain how Escobar has a positive offensive WAR when he's been nearly worse than he was last season and his statistics are clearly worse than Betancourt's?
  21. I'd be fine with 1-2. Hopefully they can get the first one, and anything after that is gravy.
  22. Honest question: If you had to choose between Escobar and Betancourt for 2012, which would you choose? How about for 2012 + 2013? I'd choose Escobar, but that means no Greinke. For 2011, I'll take Betancourt.
  23. Did you watch Escobar play defense the first half of last season? Particularly during the slide into oblivion in May/June? His ineptness in the field directly cost the Brewers at least 2-3 games. As for the age thing, I don't really care, because I don't think that Escobar is going to be an impact player moving forward. I think the Brewers were smart to dump him for an asset like Greinke while he still had value. He could develop into the best defensive SS in baseball, but if he continues hitting like he has, he's better suited for the AL, hitting 9th. Last year, the bottom of the Brewers order often had three automatic outs- one after another.
  24. Come on, Yuni is clearly the worst regular position player in baseball right now and the worst in Brewers history... ask Seattle and Kansas City fans. This hot streak is just a small sample... In all seriousness, it cannot be said that Betancourt hasn't been a major upgrade over Escobar. I don't care what WAR says. I have no clue how Escobar has a higher offensive WAR this season than Betancourt. He is worse in pretty much every statistical category. I'd rather give up a little in defense to replace a guy who was pretty much an automatic out last season. As for Betancourt's defense, I will give you that Yuni has substandard range. That said, he is pretty sure-handed on balls that he does get to. After years of watching guys like Jose Valentin, Jose K and the 'future Ozzie Smith' last season booting balls at the worst time, I can only think of a few of these that Yuni has made this year that have turned into runs for the opponents. The worst one was the botched DP against Coloado in which he had previously tied the game with a dinger, and then Prince bailed him out with the walk off. Betancourt has also impressed me with his strong, accurate arm and the way that he can turn a DP.
  25. Bud Norris has owned the Crew. He's my best candidate to supplant Suppan and Dempster in the 'mediocre division guy who dominates the Brewers' role. Hopefully they knock him around good here.
