  1. Harden's velocity was down, but he still threw harder than any of the guys penciled in the rotation (as we speak) not named Gallardo. Obviously, the loss of velocity is a little concerning since he's basically a one pitch pitcher, as is the fact that his groundball rate was down. That said, he still struck out over 7 guys per 9, and he's apparently healthy. If he was used as a #5 starter to begin the season, perhaps he could be brought along more slowly in the hopes that he doesn't live up to his reputation as a 'bullpen killer'. I would guess that you could probably get both Harden and Capuano on one year (base salary) deals for less than the cost of the first year of Pavano's multi-year contract. If you give them incentives they may cost more, but that's a good thing, because they came through. Worst case, they both flame out and you move on- kind of like the Gagne deal but for less money. It's a no-brainer to me.
  2. I say no Prince trade now, unless it involves a three way deal in which someone of the caliber of Grienke or Garza is brought in. Get another starting pitcher and make a run. Hope Prince has a huge contract year and see where you stand in July.
  3. I would be ecstatic if they could get something done with Harden. As a 4/5 starter, he has tremendous upside. Give him an incentive deal, I said $2.5 million before, but I would go maybe to $4 million, with a million dollar bonus for every 10 starts or every 50 innings over 100, and an option for 2012 that kicks in for much higher if he hits 25 starts or 175 innings. Come on Doug, get this done, get Cappy back in the fold, and all of a sudden, you have a legit starting 5 with a few extra guys that can step in.
  4. Oh, that's totally a picture of Mat. I love it; new avatar time. I regret clicking that link. I just saw a very disturbing photo of Angel Salome. http://www.facebook.com/p...l-Salome/100001236336229
  5. Rich Harden. $2.5 million base with incentives based on innings pitched.
  6. I loved what I saw from Cain last year. He looks like a young Darryl Hamilton to me. I think that he has the makings of a nice 2 slot hitter. I'd prefer to keep him unless a guy like Jurrjens is coming back. As for Gomez, I didn't like what I saw. He looked like Alex Sanchez to me. I also don't get all the man love for Dickerson, he showed absolutely no power last year and without power, he's just a AAAA player. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see him as one of the final cuts next spring as things stand now.
  7. Bullet dodged. Broxton blows. Literally.
  8. O.K., I'm coming way out of right field here, but I couldn't help but notice that Marcum is from Kansas City. Interesting. Maybe it's the opposite of the Jays using Lawrie as a piece for Greinke, and the Brewers got Marcum for the Royals. Would Marcum, Jeffress, Parra get the job done? Unforunately, I'm sure it's wishful thinking on my part. If Marcum is kept, I'm OK with it only with the cavaet that Rickie is reupped.
  9. You guys must be a lot younger than me. I take pitching prospects with a grain of salt because I've seen so many flame out. How many above average pitchers have the Brewers developed in 20 years? I'd say two. Sheets and Gallardo (not counting Eldred, because he was ruined early on). It's been a combination of bad luck and bad drafting, but you can find three Nick Neugebauers/Mike Jones/Jeff D'Amico's for every Ben Sheets. If you have a chance to get a proven guy like a Greinke, I'll take him every time over prospects.
  10. This will rank right up there with the Zito deal. Unbelievable.
  11. Ranger fans probably said the same thing a year ago. On paper, their pitching didn't look very hot either. I put the last two years on Macha and Melvin. Melvin had better do something about this pitching staff this off season. He's already starting with the excuses, and frankly I'm tired of it. Other teams can trade for pitching and/or pick up a higher upside/high risk guy on a one year deal. It's time for Melvin to do the same.
  12. Once he is signed for next year, DFA Fielder. Interested teams will know it's now or never to offer up their best packages, and the good part is that it has to be within 10 days, so the process will be quick. I would guess that someone will offer a couple of low A ball arms for him that should fit nicely by 2014. Worst case is that no trade can be made. Even then, I don't think he will pass through waivers. Some big market team will claim him and we'll have his salary off the books Going further, if Villanueva can be turned into that 2nd baseman from Toronto, there is really no need for Weeks either. Since his agent also represented Sabathia, the odds of an extension are low. DFA him at the same time.
  13. This quote: "And can "we stop blaming Macha for "ruining" players? If he was over-using someone, ok, I'll buy the argument. But that's not the case with Villy. He played his own way to AAA." I don't think that I'm alone in my feeling that Macha had it in for Villanueva almost from day one. Like Hardy, he was dumped at low value after being exiled to Nashville. There has also been a double standard on this team, some guys get sent to AAA for stinking up the field, some don't.
  14. I for one was never sold on Escobar, because I'm always leery of all glove, no bat type guys. I was hoping that he would have been used as trade bait back in '09 for Halladay (wouldn't have happened) or Peavy (bullet dodged). He needs to get a lot better both offensively and defensively, because one of the problems last season is that they had a lot of easy outs at the bottom of the lineup in Escobar, Gomez, LuCroy and the pitcher. Hopefully he gets things figured out this season, like Hardy did at 24. I don't care if he hits with power, but he needs to get the average up to at least .270 and steal some bases (and improve defensively).
  15. Have you looked at Cruz' stats? He stunk this year in AAA. .309 OBP. Escobar had a good year in AAA last year while Hardy stunk. Escobar and Cruz both bad this year. Cruz is a terrible hitter. There is no reason to let him ever play for us again except we have absolutely nobody at SS in the minors. Add in that Escobar was a highly touted prospect and that Cruz is nothing more than minor league filler and there is no reason to promote Cruz. 2010Escobar .288/.326/.614Cruz AAA .309/.414/.723 2009Hardy .302/.357/.659Escobar AAA .353/.409/.762Yes, but how about this: 2010 Hardy .320/.394/.714 (with more home runs and three fewer RBI's in about 175 less plate appearances- and about half the errors with 100 fewer chances)
  16. So maybe the Brewers should just forfeit 2011? As it stands right now, they have one of the best offenses in baseball. I'm not sure why people are thinking in 2012 the team will be a well oiled machine. Chances are that Weeks and Fielder will both be gone. The loss of 2 of the 3 best hitters on the team will not be easily overcome. You aren't going to be able to replace them with guys like Jack Cust, LaRoche or Gamel and Kelly Johnson and not miss a beat. Wolf will be old at that point, so you better hope that all these young guys are ready- and ready to skip the typical growing pains that young starters in MLB tend to have. I guess that I see a long rebuilding process after this season if they play as poorly as they have the past two. I see it differently in that the window is closing. If the bullpen does not implode again next season, I have no reason to believe that the Brewers can't compete if they can get a #1/#2 pitcher to push Wolf to 3, and pick up someone to fill the #4 hole with upside. Cappy should be resigned and be penciled in as the #5. I for one am tired of hearing Melvin's 'it's tough to find pitching' excuse. Get on the phones and target a few legit pitchers via trade. If that means raiding the farm system somewhat, so be it. Carl Pavano and the like are not going to get the job done. In my view, if this team doesn't compete, Melvin will almost certainly be gone. He had better get off his hands and start working the phones if he wants to save his job.
  17. Rather than making a trade just to make one (I still wouldn't do the Hudson deal today), I'd prefer playing to win in 2011 and seeing where the chips fall. Keep Fielder and depending on whether you compete, extend him, trade him at the deadline or take the picks.
  18. It would be very foolhardy to eat any of Fielder's contract in a trade. For God's sake, he's not Jeff Suppan. We need to back off our fixation on longshot prospects, take a deep breath and look at what this guy has done here over the past five years - even last year in a 'down' year. I know that Scott Boras is the devil, but Fielder is easily one of the top 5 players this franchise has ever developed. Guys like him don't come around very often, and I think if he gets traded, it's going to look really bad in 5 years. If he walks he walks, but this 'take whatever we can get for him' attitude that seems to be getting more prevalent is off the mark in my opinion.
  19. Texas makes me nervous. My guess is that Lee is in pinstripes and they will make a heavy push for Greinke as a consolation prize. I hope that Melvin is working this angle aggressively, he should be talking with TB about Garza as well.
  20. I don't think Macha ruined anybody, but he did blackball guys. Off the top of my head, I can think of Gamel, McClung, Gerut and Villanueva as guys who were absolutely buried by Macha. None of these guys were talented, but they were doghoused while the team made special arrangements to get Soup his 30th start. Soup 'played his way' to DFA, but it happened a year too late. Double standard if you ask me. Macha's vindicitve nature was obvious with his parting shots to the press and benching Braun in the final game. As for 'playing their way' to AAA, I'll put Billy Hall and J.J. Hardy on Melvin. Once again, if Hardy truly 'played his way' to AAA, why the heck was Escobar allowed to stink up the joint for most of 2010? I don't want to hear the 'he was young' excuse either. Hardy was in an All Star game at 24 and Escobar was 23. I thought the whole point of demoting Hardy last year was to get Escobar some seasoning (though obviously it was done to screw Hardy on his service time). If on-field performance truly counted Esocbar would have been sent down and Cruz brought up.
  21. I'd give Webb a go, but it would have to be pretty cheap, because with all his setbacks I'm not convinced that he'll be doing much pitching in 2011. I'd prefer to go with a guy like Justin Duchscherer or Rich Harden as the high risk, high upside project for a one year deal. That said, if Melvin is going to get a guy like this, he better get off his hands because guys like Bedard and Harang have already been snapped up.
  22. If they want a fresh start in the booth, I'll trade them Provus for Pat Hughes- who was in my view the best radio PBP man in Brewer history.
  23. Don't worry, Melvin is probably clearing space to give a middle reliever a three year deal. Is there anyone on the market over 32 and coming off a career season? Hopefully, Melvin has finally understood that you don't need to waste a lot of money on your bullpen. It seems that almost every year with the Brewers, it's the cheap guys who do the heavy lifting out there while the expensive guys implode.
  24. Hopefully this takes one more team off the list of Prince suitors. Where is he going to go for the huge money? I can only think of a handful of teams that have the need/money to get this done. By the way, judging from his stuff, Daniel Hudson will not sustain any long term success anywhere close to what he did for his last dozen or so starts last year. Wait until he's been through the league a few times. I always snicker when I see people criticizing the Brewers for not making that trade. Personally, I would have been at Miller Park with a burning pitchfork if they would have traded Prince for Hudson straight up.
