  1. I have no interest whatsoever in Carl Crawford to replace Braun for much more money. Crawford is nowhere near the same class as Braun, and I've always felt that he was overrated due to his 'fantasy rating' (e.g. steals a lot of bases). He's basically Garrett Anderson with speed (don't get me wrong, Anderson had a good career). This doesn't even call into account the fact that Crawford's going to cost at least $15 million per for 4 or 5 seasons.
  2. Braun and Fielder are both on a pace to be hall of famers. Trading Prince might make sense, but only because they would be forced to because of financial considerations. I know that pitching is a valuable commodity, but trading both in one deal would be akin to the Brewers trading Yount and Molitor for something like Scott McGregor and Dennis Martinez in 1981. Let's face it, this offense would be worse than the Giants without Prince and Braun, and even if you add Lester and Buchholz, the rotation wouldn't be quite as good either.
  3. They will be OK, they have a lot of new guys playing together. I remember the ECF team got off to a bad start as well- 3-7 or something.
  4. I'll trade them Braun if they want to give up both Lester and Bucholz. Lester is still somewhat of a risk because of the Hodgkins. At any rate, Gammons is a huge Boston homer, which I take this with a grain of salt. He probably thinks that Bard and Ellsbury would be a fair swap.
  5. It's somewhat intriguing, but I'd pass. I wouldn't want to buy high on a guy that was sold low and then have him implode again. I doubt that Melvin would either. It's kind of like that ex-girlfriend that you think about sometimes, then when you see her again, she is annoying the heck out of you again after 15 minutes. I could see DeLaRosa doing the same.... the fact is JDLR and the Brewers were probably just not meant to be together.
  6. If the Brewers wanted to make a huge splash and toss ridiculous money at a guy, it should have been for C.C.. That ship has sailed, and I have no interest in giving Lee a 9 figure deal that has big potential to be a franchise crippler. I'd rather give the money to Prince (most of it, that is....). People forget that less than 3 years ago, Lee wasn't even a lock to make the Indians out of spring training. I'm not saying that he's going to regress back to that point, but I'm not gambling in excess of $20 million per that he won't. This doesn't even mention the fact that he's going to be 33 years old next year.
  7. Simply put: Capuano>Washburn If Washburn truly wants to make a comeback, I'd toss him a NRI, but that's it.
  8. The ONLY way that I would even consider Washburn is if he took a deal like Jeff Weaver did a few years back or Capuano last year. If he wants any guaranteed money and/or is unwilling to go to Nashville, forget it. If he makes the team out of spring training, fine, but giving him any money guaranteed is asinine (and so up Melvin's alley it's scaring me). I'd rather have Capuano any day of the week.
  9. I'm not a fan of either Morgan or Miller, but I rarely watch SNB unless the Brewers are on (once in a blue moon). I used to watch it all the time, but I tired of seeing the Angels, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Cubs or Dodgers all the time.
  10. Villanueva is another example of a player that Macha buried pretty early on. Once again, though I highly doubt that Macha is racist, it seems that he played favorites and doghoused guys that he didn't like for whatever reason. I used Gamel and Gerut as examples of two guys that he buried, Villanueva is another one. Macha obviously didn't like Fielder and Braun much either, but there was no way that he could bury them. My guess is that Villanueva and Cruz formed a friendship down in Nashville. All that said, while the racism accusations are out of line, Cruz was dead on with the dry and lethargic stuff. I would guess that we will get a lot more pithy comments about Macha once spring training starts. As in any workplace, he may be very smart (baseball wise), but he lacked the people skills necessary to be a good manager.
  11. Just saw a picture of Sparky smoking a pipe in uniform on the bench, pretty cool. You wouldn't see that these days for sure. I also remember reading how he used to mix red man tobacco and bubble gum. Old school for sure. I may have to dig my copy of his autobiography out and read it. I remember it being a entertaining and very interesting read.
  12. When I lived in Minny I heard several stories about Garnett. I think when he first started as a young kid, he probably wasn't the same type of person as he became after he got the huge contract. Obviously there were the stories about him decking guys at practice that made the news but I also heard some accounts of some of his off court behavior. Nothing unlawful or extremely morally wrong, but just things that show mostly that he lacks class.
  13. Agreed. I don't want to part with both Rogers and Jeffress, though I'd reluctantly move one if it meant getting Greinke. Since they both have issues, Rogers with past injuries and Jeffress with bonghitting, it's going to be a gamble as to which one to trade. I'd probably roll the dice and keep Jeffress if someone put a gun to my head, but it would be tough. I'd do this mostly because knowing the Brewers luck with young pitching Rogers will get hurt again. As long as Weeks is extended, I'd be OK with packaging Lawrie in there as well.
  14. I know that this sounds like a typical homerish trade proposal, but I wonder if the Royals would do a Richie Sexson type deal to fill holes. For example would they do a Gomez (DeJesus is a free agent, no), McGehee (he could DH if nothing else), Parra, Villanueva, and Jeffress OR Rogers for Greinke. This would allow the Brewers to avoid pillaging their farm system. The Royals could fill holes with cheap guys, some of whom Yost is familiar with. They could cut their payroll in a big way, and still spin it to their fanbase that they got the Brewers 2010 MVP AND their top pitching prospect along with three other guys with some upside. I know that it sounds kind of like waste management, but most of these guys do have some upside.
  15. With the 3B and 1B playing 60 feet from home plate when a pitcher is sacrificing, it just isn't a good play. Especially when the Brewers have two pitchers who hit nearly as well as their starting SS. I agree somewhat, and you also have to consider the fact that pitchers can make it hard for a guy to get a bunt down when they know its coming - especially from an unskilled guy(high fastballs). That's why we see so many of one of the worst plays in baseball, the popped up bunt. That said, a decent bunter should be able to get the job done even with the corners playing in, you just need to get it far enough from the catcher without drilling it right at the charging fielder.....I know, easier said than done. I probably shouldn't have been so absoulute with my 'bunt every time' statement, because I guess it depends on the situation. With Gallardo up, nobody out and a guy on second, I'd let him swing away, but I don't like any pitchers swinging away with a guy on first and none or one out, because you have a high probability of either a strikeout or a feeble DP grounder.
  16. I agree, but they should still be bunting when guys are on base to let Weeks get a chance to bat with guys in scoring position (if he's still hitting leadoff).
  17. Pretty hyperbolic if you ask me. If Macha was truly biased against Latinos, no way would he have run out Escobar as much as he did to mostly stink up the joint. Gomez did not deserve as much playing time as he got either. That said, rightly or wrongly, I'd be willing to bet that Cruz was expressing sentiment that wasn't just his own. To me, Macha just seemed to play favorites. Unproven guys that he didn't like didn't play, simple as that (Gerut, Gamel, etc.).
  18. Call me old school, but in my opinion, pitchers should be bunting every time there is a man on base with less than two outs. The key is to have them able to do so with effectiveness on a consistent basis.....hence lies the challenge.
  19. Garnett is one of the biggest punks in the league. He's always been somewhat overrated and over the years, that has gone to his head. The only reason that he has managed to hold onto the rep as the happy go lucky 'Kid' that the league/media has created is that he hasn't run afoul of the law yet. Some day he is going to pick on the wrong rookie, and I can hardly wait to see his scrawny rear get kicked around the court.
  20. Is it a fact or a rumor that Gary Roenicke is being brought in as part of the staff? If so, I'm not a fan of that, as I hate nepotism - mostly from personal experience in the workplace, but also from enduring Chris Bando's stint as 3rd Base coach in the mid-90's.
  21. You definitely have a point there, but if they get 500 or so plate appearances (which didn't and probably won't happen for Gomez) they had better be getting on base enough to steal 40.
  22. This team should have no problem doubling their stolen base output next season. The fact that Gomez, Weeks, and Escobar COMBINED for less than 40 steals is criminal, especially considering the fact that they had an 80 percent success rate. Each of those guys should be able to steal 40 bases on their own.
  23. Awful news. Must be tough for Detroit to lose two of the best baseball men (and people) of all time within a few months of each other.
  24. I can't speak for everyone but I was down on the Brewers hitting HRs because we became very hit or miss. It was either a 10 run outburst including multiple HRs per game or we'd score 1 or 2 runs with none or one HR. Maybe my memory is failing but it never seemed to be where they consistently put up 4 or 5 runs per game. The thought being there is more than one way for a team to average 5 runs per game. The Brewers were the team that scored 9 runs one game and 1 run the next. I for one would rather score 4 runs one game and 6 runs the next. Both teams average 5 runs per game, but the second scenario will win you more games.Exactly, which is why I just roll my eyes when Macha supporters use the team OBP, runs scored, etc. stats in arguments regarding Macha's 'lean against the post and wait for a home run' offense. It was completely feast or famine, and Macha couldn't create a run to save his life, which was one of the reasons that the team was so fundamentally poor on the basepaths and simply getting a bunt down when it was absolutely necessary.
  25. Somewhere Ken Macha yawns.... As I said, I'm pretty disappointed with the choice of Roenicke over Valentine, but time will tell. As a disclaimer, I haven't been overly excited with a Brewers hiring since Phil Garner. At least I can say I'm not as upset with this one as I was when Lopes and Macha were hired.
