  1. I'd be guess that there has been some type of sexual assault cover up at well over half of the Division 1 schools over the past 25 years in one form or another. Probably not as egregious as the Sandusky episode, but still. This is despicable any way you slice it, but just because ESPN has latched on to the story, wouldn't make me condemn an entire school, their students and alumni.
  2. They probably could. It's that they can't lock themselves into a $100+ million payroll long-term. Right, but there is a bunch of salary freed up this year and the next two with guys like Fielder, Wolf, Greinke and Hart coming off the books- that's 40-some million right there. If the team wants to pursue them, they should be able to, it's not they are not stuck with a Suppan-esque/Riske sunk cost like they were in 2007/2008. The only guys they have long term commitments to are Braun, Gallardo and Weeks. I'd rather that they make a commitment to one of their own (Fielder, Greinke, etc.) than take the risk of entering into a terrible long term deal with the likes of Rollins or Reyes. I'd think about Ramirez, but no way in heck would I give him more than 2 years, and I'd even hesitate to do that.
  3. No excuse whatsoever that we shouldn't see at least at 10 percent increase in payroll. Three million in attendance, six home playoff games, a new TV deal, tons of new bandwagon fans across the state likely increasing merchandising and advertising revenue, even in a terrible economy. Sorry, I'm not buying the small market mentality anymore. If the Twins can have roughly a $110 million payroll last year, there is no reason whatsoever that the Brewers can't be in the mid to upper 90's. I don't want to hear market size stuff either. The Twin Cities metro is much bigger than the Milwaukee metro, but outstate Wisconsin has much more population density. You can't tell me that Fox Sports North gives the Twins that much extra to televise the games in the Dakotas. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the main advantage that the teams in the big markets have is the media revenue.
  4. I really don't know why it should matter. If an employer sees that you went to Penn State and decides to pass on you because of that he's most likely a petty idiot. Couldn't have said it better myself. If a prospective employer passes on you due to a pervert and an ESPN witch hunt, you probably don't want to work for them anyway. Sandusky's actions had absolutely no bearing on the academic merit of the school. If you were a football player, I'd advise you to pass- otherwise, if the program is for you, I don't see the harm.
  5. I was thinking it was players who are still active until I saw Sheets Sheets is still technically active.
  6. I want no part of Rollins at big money. Give an eight figure multi-year contract to a guy who's really only had one great season at the plate and will be playing shortstop at the age of 33 years old at the beginning of the contract? Pass. Let Philly give him the standard 'keep our popular veteran', career achievement-type contract that he almost certainly won't earn.
  7. You simply cannot trade Axford unless you are absolutely blown away. I always hear that closers are overrated, but look at the deals that they've been getting. By having control over Axford for cheap, the Brewers have the luxury to spend more money on the middle relief/set up guys as we saw last year. If you were to pay a closer 8 figures, you couldn't do that. I think that we as Brewers fans have been spoiled over the years by getting lucky with closers coming out of nowhere (Jones, Wickman, Kolb, Turnbow, Torres, etc.). It seems that for the past 20 years or so, every time the incumbent closer falls on their face, someone comes out of the woodwork to pitch lights out.
  8. He looks like Yuni with a better glove, but pretty old and whiffs a ton. I'd keep him in the mix, but way down on the list.
  9. Reason 19,873 that I don't watch anything on ESPN except for live sports and the occasional 30 for 30. The network has basically been unwatchable since the mid to late 90's. East coast bias, d-lord hack wannabe comedians as 'anchors', sensationalism, endless shows with moronic sportswriters making foolish arguments, etc.
  10. Pass. Linebrink was horrible in his stretch in Milwaukee, and he's been pretty bad since. I can't believe that people keep doling out money to him.
  11. Not really, due to the fact that teams didn't exactly break down the doors of Miller Park when Prince was on the block last winter. I still think that someone unexpected may jump out of the woodwork and overpay in a big way, but my guess is that everyone is waiting for Pujols to sign. Outside of the Miami PR ticket selling campaign, there hasn't been much news on him, either.
  12. Kemp had a monster year, no doubt, but he didn't really outdo Braun that much in the counting numbers, even though Braun missed some time. History has shown that the guy playing for the winner will take such a vote every time. I understand this train of thought, because without Braun the Brewers probably miss the playoffs, without Kemp the Dodgers are still mediocre. If you are playing for an also-ran, you have to be heads and shoulders in front of the pack, I don't think that Kemp was.
  13. Wow. These contracts doled to relievers affirm the fact that Ax is probably the best value in baseball.
  14. The highest that I'd go is 6/$140 with a player out after 3 years and a $30MM vesting option for 2018 (7th year) based on plate appearances in 2017. I wouldn't start there (I'd try 5/$120 with an out after year 3), but that's what I'd go to. It's not my money though. I highly doubt that he will do much better on the market.
  15. Even if you believe they should trade one or both I don't see the urgency to do it during the off-season. I think you can leverage a teams desperation better at the trade deadline if the Brewers are out of contention. Agree 100%. The only way that I would move any substantive piece at this point is either for proven talent in return, or for salary relief if Fielder is signed.
  16. The problem would be that he just wouldn't be worth it in the long run and the money would best be spent elsewhere. My question is where? If the argument is to extend Greinke and/or Marucm, it's a valid one. At the same time, there is no guarantee that those guys will be willing to sign a deal with the team, and/or that the Brewers won't be outbid. The franchise history of free agent acquisitions is horrible. Recent reputation of a 'fun place to play' aside, I think that it's safe to say that the Brewers will likely have to overpay to get any substantive players to come to Milwaukee. That leaves trades. Perhaps Melvin can take advantage of circumstance to bring in more Carlos Lee/Greinke type guys, which I would be on board with. At the same time you will decimate your farm system if you keep doing this. After the deals last year, there isn't much ammo to trade at this point anyway. Bottom line, Prince had a hand in nearly 200 runs last season, and got on base at nearly a 40% clip from the four hole. How do you replace that? I know that Brewer fans have been conditioned under the small market mentality that the stars always leave when they hit free agency. I don't know if that thinking valid at this point. If someone throws 200 million bucks at him, by all means, good riddance, but if he is in the $125-$150 million range, I think that you have to make a full scale effort. I think the Brewers are doing the right thing right now by laying back in the weeds, by letting someone else make an offer first.
  17. Well deserved for Verlander. I normally don't back pitchers for the MVP, but he was insanely good this season.
  18. Once he signs, will we be starting a 2012 version of the 'What value does Yuni bring to the team', or should we just use the old one to debate his merits?
  19. I think that people are severely underrating Greinke's value on the open market. If a stiff like John Lackey can get $80 some million, I don't think that it's a stretch that Greinke may command nearly $100 million. Would that be worth it to the Brewers? I'm not sure. I don't put much stock in the whole 'he couldn't handle New York' stuff either. In the end, money talks- how many guys have turned away Yankee money? I'm just hoping that the team doesn't let Greinke walk and then focus on the consolation prize by overpaying Marcum to save face. I really don't see Marcum aging well. If and when he loses a few MPH of his fastball, it's going to be very hard for him to adjust his other pitches to keep guys off balance like he has over his career. I read something that during his September/October drubbing, that the off speed stuff was closer to the fastball (in MPH) than the first part of the season.
  20. No way. I don't see how he has any more promise than Gamel.
  21. I'm highly skeptical that the Brewers don't have enough money to up to payroll some. How much have they raised ticket prices for next season? I thought that it was something like 10 percent or more. That alone should add a ton of revenue, as it's virtually certain that they will sell 3 million tickets again. Kick in the new TV contract, I just can't see how they can't approach 100 million in payroll for the next few seasons. They also have a pretty good level of payroll flexibility. If they have to move a Wolf or Hart to free up enough payroll for Prince, that shouldn't be a problem. It's not like they are saddled with Suppanous contracts like Seattle (Ichiro, Figgins) or the Cubs.
  22. I think that there is a legitimate shot for Fielder. It seems that every week that goes by another team drops out of the hunt. The one team that I see mentioned the most these days is Seattle, but their local media is clamoring for them to dump some salary (Figgins, League, etc.) to free up cash for Prince. They are on the hook for $45 million for Ichiro, Felix and Figggins alone next year, can they really commit another $20 some million to one guy?
  23. I was all over Furcal in July, but I don't want any part in giving him a deal that's more than a year with an option. If Melvin pursues him now, it makes absolutely no sense to me. If he wasn't good enough down the stretch drive for almost nothing at the deadline, why would he be worth a fairly lucrative, likely multi-year deal now? I've got to think that he's going to get a deal that is a tad more than what Barmes got.
  24. The Brewers only moved him when he proved beyond a doubt that he wasn't a good fit, long-term, at 3B. Agreed. However, he probably looked like Brooks Robinson over there compared to Braunie.
