  1. And be a worse team. And make less money at the gate and in merchandise But you most likely (possibly with JHJ) wouldn't have to commit two years either. I'd have liked to have signed Barmes, but that's a lot of change for him. I'd have probably done 3/11 without hesitation, but $5.5 million per for Barmes is a lot to wrap my mind around. Hardy only got $7 million per and he hit 30 bombs last year in a partial season with plus defense
  2. That's a little too rich for my blood, but about what I expected. You could probably get Yuni/JHJ and have a million or more to spare for that much.
  3. I think that the team should be generous in negotiating a 2012 contract with Ax. There is no reason not to throw him an extra few hundred thousand. At the same time, I'm not sure about signing him to a long term deal. For some reason, Brewer closers have always tended to implode (do a 'Turnbow') shortly thereafter.
  4. After the Bill Hall position change, I have to say that I'm nervous moving anybody. Braun has turned out OK, and it remains to be seen how Gamel handles 1st. That's already enough guys playing out of their natural position for me. Really there aren't that many good 2b anyway- I'm not sold on Farris or Green- so you would likely be filling one hole just to make another.
  5. Outside of freeing up some cash for Prince, there is no reason for this team to trade anybody for prospects until mid season next year, and that's if they tank.
  6. Seems like a Pittsburgh type signing. If it's only a two year deal and the Brewers get outbid by Pittsburgh, I have to wonder what they are holding back money for. I snickered when I saw Melvin's quote about not paying a backup a two million dollars or so. I'm not buying into the 'small market' nonsense at this point. There is no reason this team should not be awash in cash, at least to be able to increase the payroll a bit over last year- not to mention that basically every contract that they have is tradeable. It's not like they have dead money like Suppan or Marquis Grissom on the books.
  7. How about Ryno? I'm only half joking.
  8. Loe pitched very well in 2011, including versus LH's. I must have been seeing a mirage in May and June then. From what I remember he singlehandedly blew at least 3 or 4 games during that stretch.
  9. Good for him if he gets the Cubs job. I'm surprised that he's been as loyal to the Brewers as he's been considering how he was bypassed for Ken Macha.
  10. Who's the guy that they gave the Brewers for Bill Hall? They can have him back for Figgins if they pay all but a few hundred grand of the rest of Figgins' contract
  11. When Reyes has been healthy he has great range. Has this actually happened? Seriously, I'd say that the odds of Yuni returning are probably ten-fold over those of Reyes coming here. I'm not convinced that the Brewers are going to take the 'nine figure plunge', but if they do, it's going to be on a proven commodity such as Fielder or Greinke. Reyes is way too risky to make such a commitment, not even considering the fact that Melvin isn't exactly the type of guy to live on the edge. My guess is that they will make a run at Barmes, and then look into bringing Yuni back if he wants too much. There's not really much else out there- unless you want to give Rollins a contract based on his production 5 years ago.
  12. I'm not sure how you can be for interleague play and against the DH. I think that if you expand interleague play, you have to level the playing field and either do away with the DH (not gonna happen due to MLBPA) or institute it in the N.L. The DH rule seems to be to the advantage to the A.L. teams in interleague games, though teams like the Brewers aren't helped by the 8 man bullpens, which I feel are unnecessary even in N.L. play.
  13. From what I've seen on the highlight reel and watching him a bit, it would be tough to top Barmes' range. I haven't seen as much of Reyes, but the defensive stats would indicate that his range is closer to Yuni than it is to Barmes.
  14. Chone Figgins is a poor man's Billy Hall, with dwindling speed instead of dwindling power. I'll pass. Why bail Seattle out on that contract?
  15. If you guys want a 'rangy' shortstop, I think Barmes is the man. He's better defensively than Reyes, that's for sure- though he doesn't hit as well as Yuni. The issue is that he's going to be looking for probably a 3 year deal for $4-5 million per.
  16. I'm not familiar with the situation but they didn't have a choice because there was no interleague play. It would be literally impossible to write that schedule.I don't remember complaining about unfairness between leagues, though I complained of unfairness between divisions. The A.L. West was pretty much brutal during most of that period.
  17. Glad they are going back to the old-school logo. The whole 'O's' thing was always really stupid to me.
  18. Wasn't the issue with acquiring Furcal the money not being in the budget? I could be wrong but I thought that it wasn't in the budget and the money they would have had for Furcal was used on KRod?The Dodgers paid nearly all of Furcal's salary on top of giving him away for a middling prospect. If Melvin wasn't interested then, I have no idea why he'd be interested now.
  19. I agree that the time to get Furcal was July. If the Brewers weren't so fixated on Jamey Carroll, they could have gotten him for little or nothing. If anything else, it would have most likely prevented the Cardinals from making the playoffs. Though I liked the idea of bringing in Furcal in July, I'm not so sure about giving him a deal now, still an injury risk, and my guess is that he will be overpriced
  20. Obviously Selig is doing this to benefit his team. He's keeping the bad team in the division for another year, and then when they start to improve he moves them to the other league.... I was playing the role of uninformed baseball conspiracy guy above. I'd be willing to bet that there are similar posts around the net. As for me, I wish the Brewers would have stayed in the A.L.. I grew up with A.L. ball, and they moved from one of the crappiest divisions in baseball to one of the best.
  21. I don't think that the Bucks would be the first target of contraction, not with New Orleans, Sacramento, Memphis and possibly Minnesota in the mix.
  22. My money is still on the 50 game season like we saw 12 or so years ago. These guys aren't going to pass up paychecks much longer.
  23. Carroll is the least aggressive hitter in baseball, hence the relatively high walk rate for a singles hitter. If you don't want guys swinging at the first pitch to work the count, institute a 'take' sign and don't let guys swing until they get a strike.
  24. I'm starting to think all this Miami stuff is strictly for PR. In going after these guys, they get a ton of free publicity and spread the perception they are building a winner. They'll probably need to sign someone to sell some season tickets, but they haven't even sealed the deal on Reyes yet. You also have to consider that the owner is a notorious cheapskate.
  25. Sometimes lineups can really benefit from players who hit a soft .290, especially lineups with power around those players. I'm not convinced that the Brewers will have a lot of power next year. Take away Fielder and his 38 homers and Betancourt with 13, where do you replace that 51 homers if you sign a guy like Carroll to start at SS, who you can 'pen in' for 0 homers? 51 homers is nearly 30 percent of the teams output from last year.
