  1. Lots of good stuff in the Game Notes today. Here's the distilled version: HAPPY BIRTHDAY: To Brewers bullpen coach Bill Castro who celebrates special day number 54 today... Billy shares his birthday with such luminaries as Hall of Famer Cy Young (would have been 138), singer Pearl Bailey (would have been 87) and tennis star Jennifer Capriati (29)... Also on this date in 1848, Niagara Falls stopped flowing for 30 hours due to an ice jam blocking the Niagara River in Buffalo, New York.INJURY UPDATE: Outfielder Brady Clark left yesterday?s game after suffering from dizziness and dehydration from medication... He is day-to-day... Second baseman Junior Spivey suffered a Grade One concussion and seven stitches to his upper lip in a nasty collision in the eighth inning yesterday... He will miss a few days of action... Third baseman Russell Branyan has missed the last several games as he fights his way through a case of strep throat.THE CAMP REPORT: The Brewers have 32 players remaining in camp including eight non-roster invitees... The roster consists of 16 pitchers, three catchers, eight infielders and five outfielders.IN THE PEN: Following De La Rosa to the mound today will be RHP Wes Obermueller (#33), LHP Tommy Phelps (#41), RHP Matt Wise (#38), RHP Julio Santana (#65), RHP Mike Adams (#46) and RHP Justin Lehr (#43).OVER ON THE MINOR LEAGUE SIDE: Today, a pair of pitchers will throw over in minor league games... RHP Rick Helling is scheduled tothrow four innings (60 pitches) and RHP Derrick Turnbow will toss one inning (15 pitches) in the Brewers Class A Brevard County contest againstthe Angels High Class A team.EL CABALLO: Newcomer Carlos Lee has had a fantastic spring... He is hitting .400 with seven home runs and 19 RBI in just 14 games... Lee ranks second in the National League with seven roundtrippers behind Atlanta?s Andruw Jones who has hit an incredible 10 homers this spring... Lee also ranks fourth in RBI and would be tied for sixth with St. Louis? Albert Pujols in batting average if he had enough at bats to qualify. ~Bill
  2. Bill, do you really think Santos is still "pencilled" into that #3 slot no matter what happens between now and the opening of the season? Yep. Neither Yost nor Melvin has said anything to the contrary and Yost has gone out of his way to compliment Santos' stuff after each of these dismal starts. He was also named a "lock" in the rotation very early in the Spring, even before Capuano, so I think the organization still likes him enough to deal with the poor/terrible Spring. Like I've said before, I actually think this is a good decision. If he's terrible early in the season (after four or five starts), then Hendrickson should take his place. I'd love to see a Sheets/Davis/Capuano/Hendrickson/JDLR rotation by the end of the year. ~Bill
  3. Does it seem odd to anyone else that JDLR is starting over Obemueller today? With the de-emergence of Victor Santos this spring, is it possible that Jorge is being tested for a role in the rotation? I think this is just a reliever game and the order isn't important. Glover seems to have locked up the #5 spot in the rotation and both JDLR and Obermueller will pitch in long/middle relief. I'm not reading anything into this. I'd like to, though. JDLR will be the surprise of 2005, I think (in a good way). ~Bill
  4. That would seem to indicate that LHP Andy Pratt cleared waivers and is still with the organization. That's very good news... he's pitched about as bad as a pitcher can pitch for the last year plus, but he also led the International League in strikeouts two years ago and is a hard-throwing left-hander. If gets rid of whatever ailment is plaguing him (mental or physical), I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him in Milwaukee before the end of the season. Optimism, thy name is me. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  5. From the other thread: And chalk one more talented player to the Boras list: Taylor Teagarden (sorry Bill). Argh... that's too bad. I wonder what would happen if like 50% of the top draft eligible players signed on with Boras. Would their prices remain high? Would teams still take a pass on them? Or would it diminish the "Boras premium" somewhat? Interesting to think about, anyway. ~Bill
  6. Does it seem pretty apparent Drew Anderson is going to bypass high-A Brevard County and start for Huntsville? -- MB He's one of (if not the) biggest surprises of the spring, no? The organization really seems to dig him a lot. He's definitely somebody we should be watching closely this year... his numbers to this point are good but not great, so it'll be interesting to see if he turns a corner offensively. ~Bill
  7. I'm awfully surprised with the release of Bruso... he was one of the mid-level prospects that I thought had a pretty good chance of playing in the big leagues someday. I hope for Greg's sake that MassBrew's injury speculation isn't true, but that's the only thing I can think of that would have prompted to the Brewers to release him, too. Best of luck to him... I hope he can find a job somewhere. ~Bill
  8. If anybody knows Mark Attanasio's son's band's website (how's that for triplicate possessives?), please post. The name of the band is Flare or Flair or some variation there of... I was just curious and wanted to check them out. Gracias, ~Bill
  9. The Game Notes indicate that Davis will be followed tonight by Julio Santana, Tommy Phelps, Justin Lehr, and Mike Adams. No minor leaguers are with the team (except those in big league camp, of course). Should be fun. ~Bill
  10. I just wanted to send a little love Ryan Rohlinger's way... he's been raking for the Sooners this season. In 97 ABs, he's hitting .371/.425/.515 with four doubles, two triples, two homers, and a 9-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Too many errors, but I'm not sure if that is a knock on his defensive abilities or just some bad luck. He's no Alex Gordon, but it would be pretty sweet to see him in a Brewers uniform some day. ~Bill

  12. I'm pretty sure some of the lineup slots are wrong, and I'm really not sure who batted in the ninth, but really, who cares about Adam Shabala? His mother? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill

  21. Thanks, RyDogg! I like him a lot. Sutcliffe is nearly unbearable, though... egads he's annoying. I still think Santos deserves a chance to pitch in the rotation but I'm not real confident that he'll duplicate what he did in the first half of 2004. I agree with Clancy (I assume) that both Matt Wise and JDLR should be competing for a rotation spot and should be at the top of the list (along with Lil' Ben) if/when the team needs a sixth or seventh starter. And thanks guys for doing the pbp. ~Bill
  22. Better than Miller talking about how Kolb going from the Brewers to the Braves will now, just like Pedro, need to learn about hitters in the NL? Haha, yeah... the worst part about that incident was that neither of the other two commentators said anything and one of them agreed with him. I really want to know who this is... argh. He's good. ~Bill
  23. Anybody watching the Cubs/Diamondbacks on ESPN2? Steve Stone and Rick Sutcliffe are doing color but the play-by-play man is awesome and I can't figure out who it is. He and Stone would make a wonderful team... Sutcliffe I can't stand, but 2-out-of-3 ain't bad. Anybody know who the PBP guy is? ~Bill
  24. No more roster moves yet. Other stuff from the Game Notes: DOUG DAVIS CHAT: Tomorrow, Brewers fans will have the opportunity to chat with lefthander Doug Davis at 1:00 pm Milwaukee time on milwaukeebrewers.com... Doug will answer fans questions for one-hour regarding his career and the 2005 Milwaukee Brewers... Fans may begin submitting questions at 8:00 am on Thursday morning. IN THE PEN: Following Santos to the hill today will be: LHP Jorge De La Rosa (#47), RHP Julio Santana (#65) and RHP Justin Lehr (#43). Go team. ~Bill
