  1. I firmly believe that both luck, and clutch hitting (i.e. the mental part of the game) are just as much of a factor in a teams success as adding a bunch of numbers to determine who is the best players to start. Yep, 'cause those numbers are just arbitrary creations... the only way to really know who is a good baseball player is to see it for yourself. I mean, all these stat geeks just make up stuff. I don't care that studies of thousands of games have proven that clutch hitters do not exist... I *know* they do, and I won't believe any data to the contrary. Science is a big sham, and so is mathematics. It's all a bunch of intellectual hooey. I know the game. You don't. Please. The fact that luck exists in baseball and the belief that clutch hitters exist are entirely unrelated. I agree that baseball is a mental game as well as a physical one. But that doesn't mean that myths like the "clutch hitter" are true. I don't feel like getting involved in this *again*. A call was issued on the previous thread for *any* evidence that clutch hitters exist, and so far none has been advanced. Until that happens, this is just a science vs. religion debate, and those aren't any fun. ~Bill
  2. Now I know how Red Sox fans feel when they play the Yankees. I was thinking the same thing, AJAY... good call. Even if we lose this game, we've still got two cracks at 'em tomorrow and Sunday. A split is still do-able, although it's going to be a lot more difficult now. I really, truly, hate the Pirates. Not like I hate the Cubs, but they're getting close. And it's a shame, really... they seem like a likable bunch of guys and their city is cool and I dig their stadium. But I hate them. With a passion. Burgleflickle. ~Bill
  3. Matt Wise's line tonight is horrible. Still, he was a victim of some bad luck... in the third, Bobby Hill blooped a jam-shot over shortstop for a hit and Abraham Nunez snuck a double down the line into right. The latter was hard hit, but a few inches either way and it is either foul or an out. Then the infield comes in, definitely questionable, and after Fogg grounds to shortstop, Tike Redman sneaks a worm-burner between Counsell and Helms for an RBI single. Jack Wilson popped out, and by then Wise really should have been out of the inning. Another base hit by Rob Mackowiak was followed by a walk, and then Jason Bay killed a double into the gap. That, and the double by Nunez, were really the only hard hit balls in that inning. He did get lucky on Bay's lineout to third the inning previous, but it wasn't like the Pirates were smacking him around. The only reason I mention this is because it would have been really nice if Wise would have taken this opportunity and run with it... run with it right into the #5 spot in the rotation. As is, a good start from Obermueller tomorrow will likely solidify his spot in the rotation for at least a few more outings. Wouldn't it have been nice to see Ben Hendrickson out there tonight, though? I mean, seriously. Pretty please? With sugar on top? ~Bill
  4. Josh Fogg pitches well against the Brewers. Therefore, clutch hitting exists. Indeed. ~Bill
  5. Why, oh why, does Nedley always insist on bringing the infield in early in ballgames? It's 0-0 in the third... Wise gets a dribbler toward shortstop, but because Counsell is playing up on the grass, it gets between he and Wes. Does Nedley really think that preventing that *one* run is important? Are we going to only score 0 or 1 run this game? Dumb. ~Bill
  6. I didn't notice this until now, but blondie is catching. That is wicked cool. ~Bill

  9. Here is a little song I wrote You might want to sing it note for note Don't worry be happy In every life we have some trouble When you worry you make it double Don't worry, be happy... Ain't got no place to lay your head Somebody came and took your bed Don't worry, be happy The land lord say your rent is late He may have to litigate Don't worry, be happy Look at me I am happy Don't worry, be happy Here I give you my phone number When you worry, call me I make you happy Don't worry, be happy Ain't got no cash, ain't got no style Ain't got not girl to make you smile But don't worry be happy Cause when you worry Your face will frown And that will bring everybody down So don't worry, be happy (now)... There is this little song I wrote I hope you learn it note for note Like good little children Don't worry, be happy Listen to what I say In your life expect some trouble But when you worry You make it double Don't worry, be happy... Don't worry don't do it, be happy Put a smile on your face Don't bring everybody down like this Don't worry, it will soon pass Whatever it is Don't worry, be happy Yep. ~Bill
  10. From the AP: The Milwaukee Brewers and their second-round draft choice have agreed to contract terms. Right-handed pitcher Yovani Gallardo was assigned to Milwaukee's Arizona Rookie League affiliate. Gallardo is from Trimble Tech High School in Fort Worth, Texas. Scouting director Jack Zduriencik also announced the signings of right-handed pitcher Derek DeCarlo, their ninth-round selection in last month's draft, and right-hander Richard Breshears, who wasn't drafted. Breshears was also assigned to Milwaukee's Arizona Rookie League affiliate. He attended Seminole State College in Oklahoma. Terms haven't been disclosed. Sweet... you were right all along Patrick, as usual. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  11. After the doubleheader it's time to bring obermueller down and hart up. Let that Wise feller play #5 starter every 10 days or so. He can't be any worse than Oby http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Yep. Seconded. ~Bill
  12. I had a long drive so I listened to the last several innings without internet access (ahhhhh?!?!). Couple thoughts: 1> Nedley didn't do anything wrong... if Kieschnick would have not sucked, he could have finished the game and saved Vizco and Kolb for tomorrow and the rest of the weekend. At the same time, Jason is right on - there's a reason *we're the only team in the majors* with 13 pitchers. It's a bad idea. There aren't enough innings to go around, *especially* when our starters are freaking smoking hot. Over the next week, having 13 pitchers is fine... but its a delicate balance and you risk leaving guys out for extended periods and seeing something happen like today. 2> I almost drove off the road when Helton hit that ball to the wall. How about Vizco getting the job done? It wasn't pretty to listen to, but he got RC, Helton, and PWilson when we really needed. That's so clutch. ( http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ) 3> Nice to see Ben Grieve sucking out there again. I wish our other three outfielders sucked as much as him... that would be so cool. 4> Nice to see Ginter with one at-bat for the series. Nedley's comment about "riding the hot hand" apparently doesn't apply to him. Not that I didn't expect this, but I gotta stick up for my boy. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif 5> Seven games above .500. Are you kidding me? This is like christmas, only its every day, and its not snowing. I'm stoked. ~Bill
  13. Mike, you're too nice for this to keep happening. Maybe try and learn how to throw knuckleballs? Or try the Chad Bradford submarine delivery? Not really, but it really sucks that he keeps having trouble with that golden right arm. This is why drafting high school pitchers is not a good idea... I'm Jonesy's biggest fan (well, not really... but he's a favorite), so I hope he figures out what mechanical issues are causing this, but things ain't looking so good! For those that would know (*hint*), have the Brewers ever offered Mike a trip to the American Sports Medicine Institute to get digitally recorded while pitching? Have they done *any* of that kind of biomechanical analysis using high-speed video and composite photography? What kind of prehab program (if any) has he been given by the Brewers' brass? With all the tools at teams' disposals these days, I sincerely hope the Brewers do everything they can (even if it costs a bit of cash) to help Mike right the ship. ~Bill
  14. Hopefully Jimy Williams puts Houston in such a big hole that their new (competent) manager can't right the ship. In the mean time, *%?$ those god *&%^ &*%^ing Cubs!!!! ~Bill
  15. Holy crappy pitching, Batman. Riddle me this, riddle me that. Who's afraid of the big, black bat? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
  16. Great picture, homer... it's on Linux, too http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif . And USA Today is the lineup source of choice, 'cause they do the nicely formatted deals with avg/hr/rbi stats. They usually are up about an hour before gametime, sometimes earlier, sometimes later. ~Bill
  17. It works well in Boston, 'cause Varitek catches four of the five starters and Mirabelli only catches Wakefield. The fact that he is a knuckleballer is important, obviously, but I think that type of setup still works nicely (the Braves used it for years with Maddux' personal catcher, Eddie Perez). If Bennett *only* caught Santos, for example, then this two-catchers-system would be much more palatable. It ensures regular playing time for the backup and it gives the better/younger/better/not terrible/younger/better catcher the bulk of the playing time. ~Bill
