  1. Good to see that Yost remembered where the third baseman is supposed to bat. How can we expect our offense to produce when the third basemen moves from the sixth spot in the lineup to the seventh? I mean, seriously... these guys are only human. I also love how Wes Helms' "benching" lasted all of one game. I wonder what that makes the punishment being doled out to Billy Hall for being good. Oh well. Enough Nedley bashing... go Brewers. ~Bill
  2. 05/08/2004 - Milwaukee (Hernandez) at New York Mets (Yates) Today's game thread is sponsored in part by Lyle Overbay, raking National League pitching since 2004. 12:10 CDT start Go Brewers, ~Bill
  3. Doug Davis' cutter is sweet... very Al Leiter-esque. I've been saying this since we acquired him, but I'll say it again: Davis is a league average pitcher. He's not flashy, and he gives up a lot of base runners, but he doesn't suck. If we had five league average pitchers, we'd have a... well... average rotation. And compared to what we have now, that would be like trading in our Tonka for a Cadillac Escalade. And what can I say about Keith Ginter that I haven't already said? He's a very good player, and he should be playing everyday. ~Bill
  4. Tonight's lineups are now being brought to you by Wes Helms, who has somehow managed to work his way back into the lineup despite Nedley's public comments. Stubby Clapp is now sponsoring Trent Durrington, who is probably going to have to pitch tonight. Injury Report care of SportsTicker: Milwaukee - LHP Chris Capuano (left quadriceps, 15-day DL); RHP Dan Kolb (right hamstring, day-to-day); 2B Junior Spivey (strained right hamstring, day-to-day). New York - RHP Scott Erickson (left hamstring, 15-day DL); RHP Scott Strickland (right elbow surgery, 60-day DL); 2B Jose Reyes (right hamstring, 15-day DL); 1B Mo Vaughn (left knee, 60-day DL); LF Cliff Floyd (right quadriceps, 15-day DL); 3B Ty Wigginton (dizziness, 15-day DL); RHP Jae Seo (cracked fingernail on right index finger, may miss his next scheduled start); CF Mike Cameron (strained ligaments in right hand, day-to-day).
  6. 05/07/2004 - Milwaukee (Davis) at New York Mets (Glavine) Lineups shortly. Today's game thread is sponsored by Stubby Clapp, who wants everyone to know that he has the coolest baseball name ever. ~Bill
  7. Split-fingered pitches put a ton of stress on the forearm and elbow. I'm not sure about the biology of it, but if you even just put your left hand on your forearm and your elbow while splitting your fingers around a baseball, you can feel the strain. It's definitely hard on one's arm, especially if you've got small fingers (like when you're a kid, obviously). But yeah.... changeups and variations of the fastball is the way to go. ~Bill
  8. I probably would have pinch hit with Kieschnick and hoped he could give me two or three innings, but I can't really fault Yost for expecting Obermueller to get to 100 pitches. If he's unable to do that, he doesn't really deserve a rotation spot regardless of performance. Unless he's Tim Hudson and can throw 85 pitch complete games, he's got to have some more stamina than he's shown. Ugly, ugly game. While Junior Spivey has played very well, I still think this team would be better off had he already been dealt for a starting pitcher. Even if that starter was of Doug Davis quality, we'd be a lot better off and the bullpen wouldn't resemble a MASH unit. They need to get some folks from Indy up for this weekend. They've got two pitchers they could DL if needed (Burba and Kolb), and they could certainly designate Durrington for assignment. With Adrian Hernandez getting a start, Ben Ford could also be sent down temporarily. Davis + Hernandez + Santos = We Need Relievers Badly ~Bill
  9. I think a lot of the "progressive" amateur coaches and moving away from the slider/splitter approach and helping kids teach changeups and cut fastballs. Those pitches put substantially less pressure on the arm, and especially the elbow, while still allowing younger athletes to learn the art of pitching (changing speeds, adding movement, working inside/outside/up/down in the zone, etc.). My youngest brother is in a Junior League (13-14) and I haven't seen a kid with a real breaking ball yet. I know on his team the coach doesn't allow them to throw one, at least not yet, and so some of the kids are playing around with changeups and knuckle balls. Reading that article Rob Neyer penned about Brewers' farmhand Garrett Berger probably mirrors the story of thousands upon thousands of youngsters over the last however-many years. Too much "machismo" and not enough intelligence are the norm in amateur baseball, but hopefully that will change as we learn more about biomechanics and growing arms. $.02, ~Bill
  10. I don't like to question Ned, but why have Durrington ahead of Grieve? Interesting scrappy lineup though Are you kidding, DHonks? The third-baseman bats sixth... always. It's a rule. Duh. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ~Bill

  12. Thanks for sharing that Chris, I had forgotten about that tidbit of the Sarfate interview. It would be interesting to see Chris Bosio's reaction to that program... I would guess his between-game routine was just running and shagging balls in the outfield, especially the first two days after a start. He'd actually be a great person to interview for the site. Former Brewer, successful pitching coach, and apparently still a WI resident. Worth looking into, at least. ~Bill
  13. I wasn't online last night and didn't get to watch the game, but I listened to the whole thing on the radio. Nedley demonstrated almost all of the "in-game strategy" things he is routinely criticized for on brewerfan... he is obviously an outstanding motivator, as even David admits (! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ), but he's got a lot to learn when it comes to strategy. I hope that Dauer and Donnelly are taking active roles in the in-game management, but then again I'm not sure what their respective philosophies are. The team played well enough to win, but Nedley set them up to fail last night. It's too bad, and he deserves to get some heat for the decisions he made, but it's hard to get overly upset when the team is playing as well as it is right now. { off-topic And just as a little aside, I really enjoy the contributions of Peavey and Jason (and David)... y'all always have informed opinions and witty comments that make the board a more fun place to frequent. Hopefully last night's squabble won't deter you from doing that... everybody has bad days and gets on edge now and again, so don't take it too personally. Brewerfan love! } ~Bill
  14. You just have to wonder, with all the young pitchers having arm problems does Money have a point? And is anybody listening? It's an interesting perspective. Chris Bosio was a very good pitcher despite being quite portly. He was built like Bartolo Colon, though, with a strong lower body and big legs (kinda like Clemens, I guess, only fat). I'm looking forward to reading Will Carroll's new book about pitchers' health... I'm sure it will have a lot of info about stuff like this. Thanks for sharing! ~Bill PS: Is Bosio still coaching somewhere?

  16. If anybody wants to have a few minutes of fun, browse on over to RedsZone.com, a Reds' fan site. The quality of discourse there is, shall we say, not quite as dignified as it is here on BrewerFan. Reading some of their diatribes is good fun... highly recommended! ~Bill PS: Before somebody from RedsZone flames me, there are certainly some good contributors there. They've got a larger fan base, it appears, and so it's only natural that the quality of their forums would degrade a bit. So chill! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

  18. Victor Santos: putting the Victor in Victory since 05-04-2004. Nice job tonight... hopefully this is the "real" Victor Santos and he's not really the guy who's struggled so mightily out of the pen. Regardless, Santos definitely > Kinney. ~Bill
  19. Happy Birthday, Ben Grieve! um, you're on the bench. ~Bill
  20. LOL... is that you, Nedley? Doubles are better than home runs, and now blowout losses are better than games you've got a chance to win? Too bad Mel doesn't use the word "battle" more, or he'd be on the fast track for a job in the MLB. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Before anybody starts defending him, I [also] know what he was trying to say. It's still pretty funny to read, though. ~Bill

  24. Well, that sucked. Only so much you can do when your starting pitcher gives up seven runs, I guess. Great comeback, tough ending. Hope the big crowd still had a lot of fun. ~Bill
  25. Ok, ok, control issues, but I gotta (gasp!, choke!) agree with Schroeder here. There is NO reason to give in to Wilson in that situation. None at all. Bill hates walking guys, but he wants to pitch around everyone. Seriously... everyone. "Don't give in here" ... "you don't want to mess around with this guy" ... ad nauseum. And now he's right ONE TIME, and they come back with an "audio replay" to make themselves sound like genuises. How about if we go back and go to "audio replays" of the thousands of time that knob has recommended "pitching around" .250 hitters with no power? I, too, agree in this situation. But I hate to give Schroeder and Daron any credit - even a blind squirrel catches a nut every now and then. Speaking of nuts... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ~Bill
