  1. i think it was part of the deal we made with K-Rod that he'd drop his right to a $17M incentive-based contract year and we wouldn't be offering him arbitration. i wouldn't want to offer him arbitration and have to pay him that much for a year as a set-up man, anyway (i'd bet his offers would be substantially less if teams also had to give up a draft pick). once K-Rod hired Boras and Boras was about to submit that 10-team no-trade list, the Mets brass must have been pretty frantic to trade K-Rod as soon as humanly possible. i keep thinking this trade didn't follow the standard procedure of calling every contending team, waiting on offers, calling them again and making counter-offers and such. i think DM must have been almost immediate to make an offer and then say "take it or leave it" and with no time to waste, the Mets took it. i'd bet a very interesting Haudricourt article is going to come our way in the offseason on exactly how this trade went down.
  2. i'd always hate to spend more to fix a car than the car is probably worth. and i'm not sure past reliability is any indication of the future on something with that kind of mileage. i'd only guess that this one repair is the first of many more to come, and by ditching it now, you're probably saving yourself a ton of money on future repairs. what strikes me most is your mechanic saying get a new car. the guy who would make a lot more money off you to repair the existing one is telling you not to fix it.
  3. i like to give managers a little leeway, but that was stupid on multiple levels. what got Yost fired wasn't any less ridiculous.
  4. i'm dreading a failed suicide squeeze play during the playoffs.
  5. all i'm thinking is how awesome it would be to have a girlfriend/wife want to go to a Brewers game as much as you, and then when you sat down, she'd say "I don't really want to talk about anything that's not baseball related. In fact, can we just not talk at all and instead focus on the game? Maybe you should invite your friends along next time so you're not bothering me."
  6. Foxy, at this point i think we're all expecting you to at least introduce yourself to Scorekeeper Girl. (ok, WOMAN). i think you should announce a game you'll be at and then waive to the camera at a predetermined part of an inning so that we know it's you. now, if you can convince her to wear a Brewerfan.net tank top to a game, then that would be awesome.
  7. I am 100x more worried about the Brewers losing their edge in terms of clinching too early nothing wrong at all with what was written, but it was just so strange to be reading it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  8. if i'm not mistaken, it's the team record the year before. don't have any kind of link, but i vaguely remember DM putting almost everyone on waivers, including Fielder, even though he obviously had no intention of trading them. if i remember right (and i don't), DM said there was some administrative/paperwork processes that were eased a little by putting a player into waivers than not. i've always had the impression that what gets released to the public regarding late-season waivers is only 20% of the whole story. GMs end up looking crazy to fans because of it, but we're making judgements based on only a little bit of the whole story.
  9. The Phillies play 33 games in the next 31 days without a day off because of the hurricane.
  10. i just see it a little differently. i still don't view it as top-tier free agents "wanting to win," but merely that contending teams are typically the ones with all the money who can afford these top-tier free agents.
  11. but how much has "wanting to win" really EVER factored into free agent decisions? i see all these free agents leaving for bad teams that offer the most money and then just say how they have the "pieces in place" to win. i really can't think how Washington or Baltimore would necessarily be a place that Prince wouldn't go just because they're bad teams.
  12. i thought that Berkman loved it in St. Louis and was more inclined to retire if he wasn't resigned there? any remaining money not spent on a Marcum and/or Greinke extension i think would be best put not into upgrading the starters, but adding depth to both the bullpen and bench. i'd like to have decent infield backups in case McGehee and Green don't hit well at 3rd and same with Gamel at 1b.
  13. you know, when you put me in front of the mirror like that, you're right, that's terrible. i could just as easily have said "eh, maybe she's on vacation" or really just not been concerned about it at all, but didn't.
  14. Don't leave us in suspense. Which one are you working on?so far i'm just learning a snippet of I Puritani by Bellini titled "Ah te, o Cara." it's just a couple of verses, so a bit easier to memorize since i don't speak a word of Italian. Lawrence Brownlee's rendition (on youtube) is awesome. i can just barely fit it into my range, and the English translation is romantic, which i wanted. funny, i recently met a girl and my first email to her added "I'm starting to get into opera." Her response: "I sing it professionally." I went to hear her sing and it was beautiful. unrelated sidenote, she seems to be one of those girls who won't dump you to your face, but just never calls you back. a good while ago i started going to the Met Opera series they show at the movie theater, and i've really been enjoying it. i didn't post the opera's name before because i didn't realize anybody else on here would already know a lot about opera. that's awesome.
  15. yeah, we've been pretty spoiled when it comes to sports the past few years. so glad we don't have to live in Illinois. there has to be a way to give our starters a rest without necessarily taking our foot off the gas. maybe Dillard and DeLaCruz getting a few more innings than normal, maybe our starters get a 5th day of rest heading into October, maybe some hitters get a day off. i don't think that'd be too much. this has been such a happy surprise. i really thought this season would come down to the last week of play with the Brewers, Cardinals and Reds all within two games of each other. i know we'll probably hit that cold streak, but i sure hope it doesn't start somewhere around the beginning of October.
  16. i'm tired of youtube videos where the dude just takes a camcorder recording to his tv. i just saw one where the guy posted a youtube video where he used a camcorder to record another youtube video. also random, i'm starting to get into opera. i'm currently memorizing one so i can sing it at work when i'm cleaning bathrooms at 3am. i can't think of a bigger contrast than that.
  17. is it ironic that i could read all the other threads on brewerfan, but accessing this particular one made my tablet crash?
  18. not really impressed so far for how limited it is. just ordered a micro-usb cable with a female (regular) usb end so i can hook stuff up directly to it, but i'm guessing Steve Jobs will personally visit my apartment to laugh in my face when i try to sync my ipod using the Touchpad. darn. wanted all that music off my laptop.
  19. stupid thing doesn't have a USB plugin. guess that makes it basically useless for music storage and updating my ipod.
  20. out of stock at my Best Buy but Wal-Mart still had six of the 32Gig ones, so i got one. i don't really need one, but i'll find a use for it for that kind of discount. was thinking of using it more like an external hard drive to store music and whatnot on instead of storing it on my laptop. hopefully that will slightly speed up my laptop.
  21. the Interwebs are either sold out or normal price. guess Best Buy will be the first stop on my errand run today.
  22. seems like no point since i have a laptop. however, the laptop has a slow 32-bit processor and is maxed out on RAM, so maybe this thing would do well just to free up some memory on the laptop and help it run a little faster.
  23. it's been so much fun to watch Greinke get better and better and better with every single start. we wondered what was going on in May, but all of a sudden you look at his stats now and you realize that he's the same pitcher that he was in 09. scary how good his numbers are right now and they don't even represent how good he's been for us the past two months. bonus that he'll be hitting his stride come October and shouldn't be fatigued by a long season yet. Phillies have no chance.
  24. i'd absolutely love to see Hairston take a significant bench role with us next year. Counsel will obviously be gone and i'd be a little wary of all the bench roles being taken up by rookies. especially that Hairston can play so many positions, that's a ton of value he can bring to the team. he's been a a great stopgap, and i don't think you could ask for anything more out of a bench player. Hairston is eventually going to retire and should be really proud of the career that he had. an excellent player.
  25. this thread prompted me to watch a few Barry Sanders youtube highlight reels. i've never seen another human be able to go from 0 to 60 as immediately as he could. gotta love the clips where a defensive lineman was just standing there thinking the play was done, only to have Sanders run right past him. I've always had a heart for those players who never exactly had the superb talent (relatively speaking) but just worked their tails off to be contributers to a team. i don't know if it surprises me or not that every player mentioned so far was always just plain a good person beyond their athletic ability. guess it's hard to ever root against a guy like Mike Cameron who spends every minute of his off time visiting sick kids or donating to charity.
