  1. until the actions of the football team effect your studies, it's a non-issue. no prospective employer is going to care. what negative thing could you envision an employer saying to you, anyway? "Some monster raped some kids at the school, therefore your education is second-rate." ?
  2. wouldn't that just represent a downgrade at two positions instead of just having a hole at SS?
  3. i understand you have to overpay to get a good FA, but $20M per makes me choke a little bit. even these days, for that kind of money, you can get a player who has a lot more certenties of health and ability that Reyes has.
  4. What gets me mad is that they are called vampires, yet they are able to walk around in sunlight. is it really that bad to give a few tweaks to known monsters? i don't remember werewolfs being particularly good at basketball until Michael J. Fox came along, either. and should a movie whose target audience is the teenage girl really be required to stay absolutely true to a monster genre? why try to market authenticity to an age group that doesn't care who Bram Stoker is or has ever heard the name Nosferatu?
  5. you all hate the movies yet you know so much about them. sure guys, sure.
  6. you and i just drive down streets like it's any other day, but Jennifer Lopez drives down those same streets and gets inspired!
  7. the lack of blue-chippers in the Minors is discouraging, but then i think about the Cardinals and how they can make great teams out of a few superstars and a lot of solid contributors. and the Brewers either already do or have the potential to field competent players at every position but SS right now. and Yo and Braun are legit superstars now. and MA has been spending to an average payroll. it doesn't leave a ton of room for error, but there's definitely a lot of room to stay competitive. and then sometimes there's those players who really surprise and do so much better than expected like Braun and McGehee, or Freel for the Cardinals, and maybe we'll strike gold with one of our AAA guys again. plus last offseason showed you really never know what to expect.
  8. um, if that's true, that was sure quick.
  9. this is going to make it just slightly harder to root against them. not impossible by any means. but just slightly harder. guess now i only can't stand 25/26ths of the team (not including other coaches).
  10. i was given two Oxy pills by a coworker because i'd badly pulled a muscle in my back. i was sure to take them only after i'd driven home, but they did absolutely nothing. i've taken Codine, which is also morphine-based and that helped, but for whatever reason the Oxy did nothing.
  11. i remembered this thread because i've crossed some things off my list. --last weekend i had a bite of my first funnel cake. --i now have a few cavities (this probably was more a matter of not visiting a dentist regularly) still have not been on a ferris wheel. have never had Dipping Dots (looks like i never will)
  12. ARE they living like paupers right now? accepting a bunch of free shoes doesn't necessarily mean they're hard up for cash, but only taking advantage of an opportunity, illegal or not.
  13. the trade seems to be ideal for both teams. Sanchez doesn't strike me as any great deal better than Cabrera. so Sanchez had a bad year and projects to be better, while Cabrera had a great year but it was a surprise--sounds equal to me. what else is SF going to get for an ok pitcher with one year remaining? maybe they could have squeezed out a little bit more from some other team, but that would have taken a lot more time. it's probably a nice benefit for SF to get this done early in FA so they can have more energy to devote to wasting their money on Beltran.
  14. i'm sure Title 9 proponents would have a lot to add on men's football players getting a stipend and nobody else getting anything.
  15. any stipend that would go to football and baseball players would then have to be given to all athletes, who work just as hard as football players do, but just not in a money-making sport. that's a lot of stipends to be given out. football players are making an investment in themselves just like regular students are. either they get to play in the NFL and make a ton of money after college or they get a free education at a school the quality of a UW or Stanford or wherever. the NCAA had made a proposal a while back that i liked, allowing tuition to be paid for a fifth year of school, beyond their athletic eligibility. that's tantamount to getting paid. for all the kids who don't have the time to play football and take engineering classes, now they'll get that extra year to finish up. nevermind that other people are making money off of football programs, i just think about my experience compared to the football players, and they certainly have a lot of advantages already in school compared to what i went through. i couldn't get into UW because of grades, yet Rashard Griffith could barely spell his name and he gets to go. maybe they leave school with a little bit of debt, but it sure isn't the debt that i have because of school. and if a college football player wants to use the school as a springboard to the NFL, then he still has the option of going to Florida and taking "Football 101" classes and not really having to worry about academics. seems like they get a pretty good deal to me. and sure the schools are making a ton of money off of the big sports, but so be it. a school is a business regardless if it's a state school or a private one, and they have to put the football money back into the school to stay competitive. even if that money goes back into athletics instead of academics, that still brings in a lot of regular students. i'd love to see a minor-league football organization set up that could compete with colleges. a player could skip all the academic stuff and go there instead of a school. then they'd be able to play for a few years and get paid before they became eligible for the NFL.
  16. they never actually solved the mistakes issue. and why would Dwight have made a result that would have cost him his job? the show still has a lot of potential to be funny, and everyone still likes the characters--it's still the first show i choose to watch on Hulu even though Parks&Rec is available. i think of when the show has been the funniest and it's been when the comedy was based on something relateable to a real office. but a lot of plotlines are moving away from that and even the characters themselves are moving away from being real people. i guess we'll never get to see how Outsourced obviously would have played out.
  17. not for me.
  18. i think risk/reward on acquiring a big-time pitcher can be somewhat circumstantial. if you're a team heavy in minor-league pitching depth, there's not so much value to blowing your budget on yet another pitcher. but if you're a team like Milwaukee that is very thin with blue-chip pitching prospects, then i think that adds a bit more value to the money you'd spend on a big-time pitcher and balance out the risk a good bit more.
  19. in the same way that the Brewers have been rivals with the Pirates the past few years, yes.
  20. Nieves, do you know anything about being a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional? i was thinking of paying to get this just for resume-building. i asked an old boss who hasn't written back, but i was wondering if it held any weight at all. it's kind of expensive and very clearly just a way for the governing body to take money out of our pockets, but i'm thinking it's just one more thing that other applicants won't have (though the graduate degree tends to do that already). i am hoping to become a Certified Playground Inspector, too, because it should be a nice value-added on my resume. after these two certifications are complete, i'm going to ask for permanent night-shift duty and then get a simple-enough second job. the extra $200-300 per month will either pay off additional school loans or i could be much more willing to fly out of state for a first interview without having to dip into bill-paying money. i already lost out on a Park Ranger job because i wasn't willing to fly out for a first interview and they wouldn't do an initial talk over the phone. a second job would mean death to any possible socializing, but it's not like i know anyone here, anyway. Get me out of Texas!!!!!
  21. why the $12M arbitration guess? for a guy who made $17M last year, i've been thinking he'd make quite a bit more than $12M in arbitration. Boras has to have a good idea already for both what he can make in arby and what he might make on the open market, regardless if teams aren't legally able to make open offers for him yet. another reason i can't see him accepting arby is that he isn't too young anymore. since he's no longer on the upswing, wasting a year in Milwaukee in 2012 isn't going to get him a bigger payday in 2013.
  22. Where I'm from, $10K is a mighty expensive ring.sorry, doubled-up on my symbols. i meant 10 karat gold. still, it really bugs me. just got it a few days ago, too.
  23. you didn't miss much.
  24. looks like i just lost the ring that my brother gave me as a Best Man gift only a week ago. was my dead grandfather's. not expensive or anything, just 10k, and didn't have any meaning other than it was my grandfather's. but must have slipped right off my finger. will head back to the bar tomorrow to see if it was turned in, but that's pretty doubtful.
