  1. I used to write/edit a magazine about mass transit. Buses are usually the first to get experimented on when it comes to alternatives because you can get millions of miles on them in short order. I even wrote an article about NYCT buying something like 250 hybrid-electric buses. Natural gas and methane-driven buses have been out there even longer than batteries.
  2. What's the typical age, when referring to the age of your kids, that a parent switches from months to years? Is it about 2-3 years old? I'd imagine if my mother referred to me as her 543-month-old that'd be strange.
  3. Well, right now Watson only has I think two civil suits pending and no criminal charges against him. Is that really worth a year's suspension? Especially considering the weak suspensions players get for punching women and other sins, Watson's situation should probably only constitute a Week 1 suspension and that's it.
  4. Me, too. Retail sales and unemployment are weirdly contradictory to a recession, but I'm more inclined to think we have more hurt coming, at least until the public is confident inflation is going down and will continue going down. Right now is just such a great time to be buying stocks and crypto regardless of the future and people recognize that.
  5. Middleton to Milwaukee is 184 miles round-trip, so if you take your EV I guess you just cross your fingers you don't get stuck in traffic. And it takes 10 hours to fully charge a Tesla at a charging station, or a whopping 3 miles of range per hour that you charge it from a regular outlet--so even staying overnight at grandma's house won't get you back home unless you unplug her dryer and run a dropcord from there. Certainly the vast majority of our trips are local, but we're also deciding on a whim to go on weekend trips or a ballgame, too. And last time I rented a car for a week it was sure more than $100.
  6. There would have to be a system by which you charge people more for electricity use during peak times than otherwise. Quite the luxury item to have a $70,000 vehicle you can pretty much only drive around town. And even if there were charging stations everywhere, I looked it up and if I were to drive home in a Tesla, I would spend longer just charging it up than it takes me to make the drive in a gas vehicle.
  7. Cool, I used to be a magazine editor, too! The pronouns don't bother me. Typically everyone is talking about one guy in particular so it's not hard to follow.
  8. I like the playoff idea, too, at least so long as there's a way to reward the teams that finish furthest. Like a guaranteed playoff spot for the winner or a win from the quarter-finals is worth two. The more every sport expands its playoffs the less the regular season matters. So adding some interest there helps.
  9. I have the same issue at my job but am pretty well stuck here for two reasons: I can't afford to both retire and take a pay cut; I worry in this recession that if I were to take a new job that I could wind up being a "last in, first out" layoff.
  10. Darn. This was pretty well the last place in the world which didn't let politics infect it and now it's here. It's hard to describe how disappointed I am to have seen that banner. I've been on this site about daily for more than a decade and lots of other folks here are the same. I don't know peoples' politics and that's awesome. I just want to talk about baseball or debate what belongs on Hawing's relish tray.
  11. I didn't think they could trade the pick since you have to have a first-round selection every other year.
  12. I recall when we signed him the board generally believed that he wouldn't produce much this last year of his contract, but that he'd make up for it his other seasons. Certainly seems to be the case.
  13. Gotta be the most backhanded compliment I've ever heard. Funny.
  14. I did some job-searching yesterday and the jobs I could get pay roughly what I'm making now (shocker, I know). But the big problem is I pay $100/mo in rent for work housing now, and a new job would be $800/mo with a roommate, so overall a drop in earnings. Although I do consider that a regular 8-5 schedule is way better than the permanent night shift/holidays/weekends work that I'm on and that in itself has some amount of value. I have to sacrifice a lot of social outlets for this job (difficult when you're single and worse with a family) and that has me feeling pretty lonely. But especially if I hope to retire in 12-ish years, I think I'm pretty well stuck here because I can't afford to sacrifice a penny of income. As bad as morale is here with no opportunities for a raise and new hires making more than veterans, that's largely the reaction a lot of people are having here, that they're pretty well stuck. Adding to it there's a certain fear that if I changed jobs and the economy got worse, that I would be taking on the higher risk of getting laid off as that "last in, first out" employee.
  15. Unless you're retiring in only a few years, all of this is a value investor's dream come true. If only I had more money to throw in the market right now. Although I don't think we've come anywhere close to the bottom of the market yet.
  16. Heck, our seasonal office workers are now making $4.5k per year more than our full-time office positions.
  17. I've been at my government job for seven years now and the new people they're bringing on at my level are making more than me. Morale is so low right now that lots of people are looking to leave. I also have a house which comes with my job which I pay $100/mo for. Despite losing the house when I leave/retire, that ends up being enough of a benefit that I have doubts I'll be able to find an equivalent-paying job elsewhere. Plus I'd have to stay in government work to keep my pension. So I think I'm pretty well stuck.
  18. There's a third season of Detectorists out on Amazon Prime.
  19. One month down of being Interim Boss and being the only LE presence here. Nothing I've had trouble doing or has been overly complicated. But despite normal hours or maybe even fewer, I have a tiredness I can't shake and am just always exhausted. But hopefully we get our new employee here in a few weeks, which will only be 10 months after they first interviewed. The Boss job has been available to post for three months now, but nobody is in a hurry on that and I fear it'll stay un-posted for a very long time. But going through an entire summer with permanent night shifts and the only LEO here won't be cool.
  20. My brother worked there, too. He was the tall one.
  21. Not sure how it is on mobile, but when the ad at the bottom of the page changes, it throws you out of the text box and you have to click on it again to continue typing. Not the world's worst thing by any stretch, but it's annoying.
  22. I can't imagine it would be a ton of teams who'd want Lopez' expiring contract, but a more-mobile 5 who could actually defend the pick-and-roll would be awesome. Guessing we'd get zero back in return for Lopez and that maybe this is the "need" draft pick if there happens to be a 5 available. Even a defense-only 5 would fit in well. Portis was asked about his extension and he said he'd leave it up to Milwaukee and his agent, which I interpret to mean he'd love to stay but only if he got a nifty raise. Milwaukee can do a 2/22 extension, at least officially, but I can't imagine they would and face the heavy repeat-offender luxury tax charge. Middleton is also eligible for an extension this offseason or next, which would net him in the $40-50M range per year. Would the Bucks be willing to blow things up and trade him in order to preserve the strength of the remaining roster and not create a "Big 3 with zero supporting cast" scenario in the near future?
  23. The brother said BB7 in Madison may be hiring for that due to an upcoming retirement, as well as Milwaukee Tools out of Milwaukee. And if you see something with Milwaukee, he'd be able to give you the right person to contact.
  24. Obviously we won't be able to expect too much of any offseason changes to what we've got now. But I do hope some changes are made so that Giannis isn't having to handle as much of the workload as he is.
  25. Maybe if the Bucks had more than one single play on offense they could make adjustments when the opponent is able to defend that single play. They're so reliant on one player's one move that they're a deer in the headlights (pun intended??) when it doesn't work.
