  1. right before i moved from Texas, everybody said to just kill my tropical fish and start over when i got to my new place. they were cheap fish, sure, but they'd lived a little more than a year already (a long time for fish) and they were MY fish. so i bought a bubbling bait carrier that cost more than my fish cost, combined. and except for the ones that died (three jumped out of the carrier (one was rescued), one died from the elements, and my favourite one got eaten by a dog), they all lived through the 1,600-mile trip to North Carolina. i even stopped every day of my drive to make sure they had a change of water and appropriate chemical neutralizers for the specifically-room-temperature drinking water that i was buying for them. so i get my tank set up in my new place and even buy a few more fish from the store nearby. but it turns out the fish from the store have ick, which is currently infesting my fish tank. as many as four fish per day are dying. it's a horrorshow. those little fish, which lived longer than they were supposed to in Texas, which managed to survive through a really low-capacity and fish-poop-ridden holding tank for four days, have now succumbed to ick and have died. i feel like i'm not supposed to be sad about generic $3 fish that i got from the pet store dying on me, but i am.
  2. Amy Poehler, Zach Galifanikis and Owen Wilson are in Winston-Salem filming some movie. Owen Wilson, especially, has been everywhere around town. the local game now is "find out where Owen Wilson is tonight." apparently he was at the same party i was at and i didn't know it.
  3. i read the thread title and thought there was a baby on the way.
  4. got back a couple weeks ago, which means now it's job-hunting time. but i'm now fighting the stress with a $22 case of Stoudts Tripple. a friend of mine used to be the Assistant Brewmaster for Pisgah. they were bad when they first started, but now their stuff is pretty good. either i'll go up to Asheville or he'll come here and we'll be beer snobs for a weekend, which is fun. you'll have to join us next time.
  5. i forgot the name of the gentleman who somewhat-recently moved to Raleigh, but if you're willing to drive to Winston-Salem tonight or early tomorrow morning, there's a good store there selling cases of beer for about 50% off (and wine for about 40% off). but get there early because the popular ones go fast. lot of winter seasonals they're trying to get rid of, but others, too.
  6. i just picked up a suit today, actually. i got a Ralph Lauren one from Macy's for about $320 since they have a sale going on right now, and you get a 20% discount when you sign up for their Macy's card. Kohl's is running a half-off sale right now, and i thought their Marc Anthony suits looked nice. i've had limited experience in the Men's Wearhouse, but wasn't happy with their style of salesmanship. i walked right out the door when they said "Wow, that fits perfectly and won't need any tailoring at all!" definitely the best tip is to get it tailored. a man looks better in a tailored-but-cheap suit then he does in an ill-fitting-but-expensive one. also something to keep in mind: i got my first suit right after college, and it wasn't all that long before i was hulking out of the thing just from gaining weight with age. definitely wait to see if you're going to need to wear a suit every day at work before you buy a ton of them.
  7. i was starting to think this whole thing was going to be like those Dan Patrick "major announcements," where he strings you along with it for hours and then announces something basically meaningless.
  8. i'm not sure what you guys are really expecting from a short and crude listing of all baseball teams from a national outlet. the mission of SI and espn is to generate pageviews, not to actually inform the already-educated sports fan. and yeah, i also bet that the writer indeed never watched a Brewers game last year. seems like watching one or two games would be a terrible way of developing broad generalizations of a team.
  9. i believe that's what i heard RR say post-game. the local Green Bay guys were ripping him for the move. then they played Ned Yost's post-game presser and paused it every three seconds to insult or laugh at him.
  10. I can't even figure out how to message people anymore with facebook's new timey thing, or respond to them. and it appears a few videos I made have disappeared. when getting off facebook has been the cool thing to do lately, it makes no sense to offer people all the more reason to get off. I'm also getting really tired of seeing people at a party or social outing have their face in their phones the whole time. I know it's been said on here before, but it's worth complaining about twice.
  11. what i'm reading a lot of is looking at the Cards and the Reds and focusing on their negatives to why they won't win as many as predicted or just why they're not going to succeed. but then when it comes to the Brewers, it's making estimations of progression and chemistry and everything else reasonably positive. it doesn't seem fair to compare the three teams by subtracting negatives from the Cards and Reds, while adding positives onto the Brewers. just about any team would come out ahead if you do it that way.
  12. yeah, that room we had agreed you were going to move into in two days? yeah, sorry, but that's not available anymore.
  13. she's moving to Russia.
  14. between work, i had planned about two days off to pack up and move across country early next week already. i had a place lined up for a six-month term, and just yesterday he emails me saying that now i won't be able to stay there past May. ironic that he told me earlier that he was worried about potential renters flaking out on him, but now he's effectively doing the same thing. now i have to frantically find a new place to live. i might have a bite already, but it'll mean a female being comfortable enough to take on a male roommate who she doesn't know. i suppose if i had the legal gumption, i could force him to let me stay there the entire six months, since it's all agreed to on email. if this prospective roommate declines, i may very well push for this, or at least demand that if i can only stay for two months, then my rent should be deeply reduced for my troubles. edit: i told the landlord to stick his finger in his nose. if the next place declines, i guess i'll visit the siblings and parents for a few weeks until i can find a different apartment. more expensive with money i don't have, though.
  15. there's always the few-day cruise from Seattle/Vancouver up to Alaska. and being that you don't like to sit, there are a ton of side excursions that you could take. if you're into paddling and nature, i forgot the name, but there's a reserve near the Vancouver area that's one of the best rivers in North America to go down. popular in travel now isn't so much to pick a specific destination, but to pick an activity or two that you really want to do, and then go to whatever place offers the best resources for that.
  16. i can only think that his ability to call pitches/games will improve as he matures, too, making him all the more valuable.
  17. your wife can read "Travels with Charley" while you read "On the Road" and then you just get in a car and go, and see where things take you. ....but hopefully to Lake Powell, because that looks incredible.
  18. i think i remember a Napa Valley wine tours thread on here a while back. isn't Canada as cheap as flying around the US? Montreal is a great party city and Newfoundland has some excellent hiking. and Whitehorse is gorgeous. Labrador not so much. the Starlight Express (i believe) is a passenger train that runs up Highway 1 from Portland to Seattle and is one of the best train rides in the US.
  19. thanks, guys. i'll need a car for job interviews and whatnot (but may buy a bike if a part-time job is close). i'm really starting to lean toward just putting $400 into a new window motor and keeping the car (possibly go for the $1000 AC since it's hot and humid in NC). even if i could manage payments, i just don't want to make a foolish mistake of taking on more debt when my financial future is uncertain. and for trading my bad car for another one, maybe there's just no sense in that. just cross my fingers on the current car, i think.
  20. it's a little tougher to be too specific with the dealer for make and model just because i'm really only able to pay about $2000 past my car's trade-in value so that i don't have car payments to make during my however-long period of unemployment/underemployment. i could really use your all's advice on the matter before i make such a big move, though. is it better to just bite the bullet and pay $1000 on some AC work on a car that's always had one new problem after another, or end up with somebody else's junk car and cross my fingers that it ends up as more reliable (or at the least, that repairs on domestic vehicles are cheaper than on Korean ones). or even just pay $400 for the new window motor and deal with no AC for the summer. it's just that i'm leaving my job and only have $4000 saved up (with $4500 in available credit) and am wary of getting myself into a situation of having debt with a possible inability to pay. thanks, all.
  21. their internet site said the truck had 133,000 miles, not 233,000 miles. either way, i'm going to make the offer straight-up for my car with no money exchanged. if not, then i'll deal with no AC or windows and trade it in when i get to NC.
  22. my car is the devil. windows won't roll down (would be $400 fix) and now the AC needs $1000 worth of repairs. 130,000 miles on the thing already, and everything has broken down on that car that i'm sick of replacing it all. i feel like i'm in the shop every three months. it's not just the AC, because history with this thing says that it's going to be something else expensive after that, too. only recently paid it off and also am about to be unemployed. just awesome. obviously don't want to take on car payments now, so i guess i'll be trading it in and basically downgrading just for something that has a better standard of durability. just filled it up with freon, so the AC will last another two weeks before it all leaks out. just looked at a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup with 232,000 miles on it. sticker of $6,000 for it and won't yet give me their trade-in price. guy also showed me a Chrysler with 80,000 miles on it but sticker says $9,000, even though i told him i can add around $2,000 along with the trade-in, but don't want payments. he said "well, we'll see what we can do to lower the price and give you a good trade-in." sure.
  23. it's always so interesting to read this thread and see just how quickly things can go from "the Bucks are miserable and will always be miserable" to "hey, the Bucks are sure fun to watch" and then back again. wait. that's every team everywhere. carry on.
  24. i give my job its notice tomorrow afternoon. woo-hoo! choosing North Carolina over Colorado was tough because my brother, his wife and an eventual niece/nephew are there. but when i think of just me by my lonesome, North Carolina seems more like home (second to WI, anyway), and i think that's most important. beyond finding a career job, i have so many plans on how i'd like to improve everything with this new start. i'm so excited for this.
  25. when there's only maybe 10 superstars to divide between about 30 NBA teams, i suppose that gives the superstars a lot more license to act like children and keep getting NBA GMs to bow to their every whim.
