  1. Another thought. When was this defense the best the last couple years? When Clay played MLB. I would entertain the idea of going back to 4-3 full time. Put Clay in the middle. (And yes, his deal needs to be re-structured.) Then go get a pass rusher in FA to go along with Perry. I think that would be an improvement in the front 7. In the backfield, yea get a FA if there's any out there. But as I said earlier it's really thin. They may need to trade up in the 1st to get one that is really good and ready to go. And they need to find TRUE CBs. Not guys who are versatile, converted safeties, etc. That's all fine and well once in a while, but they need guys who can play man.
  2. Really thin year in Free Agency, and that's before teams sign their own FAs. Maybe there's cap casualties later on that would be a good fit, we'll see. But not real encouraged by what's out there right now- especially at CB.
  3. Yea, you watch Capers will be the fall guy. Fine, I don't mind a change there. New voice, new way of doing things, etc. But I called for Defcon 5 a couple years ago. TT is a good GM. MM is a good HC. Maybe even a great HC. But sometimes major changes need to be made to shake things up. I would bring in new GM, let him decide if he wants to keep MM. Then start from scratch on defense. This is even a chance to go back to 4-3 full time. Problems are way deeper than CB. LB you have borderline NFL players. Edge guys too. Heck I don't even think safeties are all that good. This is the same movie for years now. Even Rodgers said major changes are needed to get back to SB.
  4. Eye test means nothing for established MLB players, the numbers are there and tell the story. For MiLB you use all of the above. Draft is more eye test (scouting) than anything else because a HS pitchers WHIP means almost nothing.
  5. That's not limited to sports personalities. Same is true for TV and movie actors. And family, and friends. Which is why I gave up social media a couple months ago, and never looked back. Probably easier at my age than younger people, but I highly recommend it. I get a Bleacher Report feed, and that's it.
  6. Agree. Even Hiram Burgos has a shot if a couple guys are traded or injured. He had some dominant stretches in the minors, and coming off a really nice winter league stint. Probably no room for guys like Wilkerson or Burgos, but not they are options. Also, I wouldn't be shocked to see Lopez or Woodruff make the rotation coming out of ST. They may want to trickle these pitchers in, instead of suddenly adding 3-4 rookie SP in a short amount of time. This would also speed up the rebuild a bit, because all these SP prospects will need a little adjustment time. They probably wouldn't want to start Hader's clock quite yet, but may want to do that with a Lopez since he's older and not quite as concerned about his clock.
  7. Beginning of the year, hoping he should be an All Star, now All Star starter. Nice leap, and he earned it.
  8. Fox Crossing is the artist formerly known as the Town of Menasha.
  9. Really only two questions come to mind. 1) What is his entrance song? 2) Who will butcher his name worse? Coshun or Augie?
  10. Nelson has value. He can eat innings, has 3 years of control, and is still young enough to have an upside. Essentially, you know what his floor is, and he ha shown stretches of what his ceiling could be. As others have said though, that doesn't equate to someone offering a top prospect for him. So he really is more valuable to the Brewers at this point. As far as a guaranteed starting spot? I would say he's pretty darned close to be guaranteed a spot. We'll see how ST goes, there could be an odd man out (or two) but they can always put Anderson in the BP or CS, or hide someone like a Guerra on the 15 day DL, just to buy a little time to see how things shake out. Finally, I think there's a chance a rookie makes the rotation- probably Woodruff. I'm thinking they may feel the need to spread out the arrival times of these SP prospects.
  11. Astros were my NL team growing up, great to see Bags get in.
  12. Of the four highest OPS teams in baseball last year only Boston had fewer than 1,100 ABs by sub .700 hitters (BOS with 577 ABs, COL with 1,247 ABS, CHC with 1,106 ABs, and DET with 1,874 ABs). So it's possible, I just think it's very unlikely. Maybe this shows that a .700 OPS threshold isn't low enough to draw many conclusions from. Each team has about 5,500 ABs in a season, so we're only talking about 20% of a teams ABs, how the other 80% breaks down is probably more informative of a team's total offense. Anyways, not trying to be combative, just curious and found it interesting to dig into a little Oh, no, I didn't take it that way at all. Quite the opposite, really good information here.
  13. This is part of the process of simply giving guys a chance. Villar, Perez, Broxton, Pina, Guerra, etc. - good so far. Other guys were mediocre or outright awful. The nice thing is that we found quite a few keepers from the bargain bin. That's part of building the team into a winner. Of course, that means hundreds of ABs from Flores and Walsh and guys like that. But that's life. You don't win them all. I think we'll have a lot more of that this year - not as much - but still a lot of it. Oh, don't get me wrong I get they needed to kick the tires on a lot of guys. I don't expect nearly as much of that this year. If Arcia is above .700 it will be tough for them to have 1,000+ ABs by sub .700 hitters. Although MrAllen shows it's entirely possible I guess. Tough to fight history.
  14. Flores, Walsh, Elmore, Walsh, etc. Roughly 900 PA by guys like that (I did include Maldy.) That's basically 200 games played by guys with sub .700 OPS! *That's not even including Kirk N, who barely broke the .700 barrier, plus he's still on the roster. Although, hopefully, he won't get anywhere near as many ABs this year.
  15. Brewers were 73-89 last year. It's January, who am I to tell anyone not be optimistic? Go for it! Even losing Lucroy, I could buy into the offense being as good as last season. Who knows, maybe even better. But swap out Jeffress, Thornburg, and Smith for Feliz, Knebel and whoever? You start to lose me. Now convince me there's any possible way this rotation can take this team above .500. Like last year, I will enjoy the process. Villar,Broxton emerged and I hope they keep it up. Will be fun to see if Arcia and Santana develop. Maybe Brinson. The young catchers, and our Korean import. Maybe Hader and Lopez. That's why I'm optimistic, plenty of talent to watch develop.
  16. The Bucks didn't draft Middleton he was included in the Jennings trade to Detroit. Correct, got mixed up with Redd, going wayyy back.
  17. Agree, but that doesn't explain why people are wide open in the red zone. No fear of anyone going deep, easy to cover that with a short field. Yet guys are still wide open, usually right across the middle.
  18. To be fair, they've made good 2nd round picks like Middleton and Brogdon. I think Maker was a good 1st round pick. I mean they've done a really good job on draft day, unfortunately equally bad the other 364 days.
  19. Yea, and not signing Zaza was a mistake.
  20. Yea, on the play you're referring to there are at least 3 defenders very close to Whitten, yet none of them is actually COVERING him. That's been the issue with the Packers zone forever. So I agree, to an extent, that is on Capers and the coaching staff. Even though in general I still think lack of personnel is the biggest issue on defense.
  21. In the NFL, all stats are a small sample size. They are not worthless, but far from the whole story. For example, Falcons played Saints twice, while the Packers played the Bears/Vikings twice. They also include all stats from beginning to end, and this changes a lot throughout a season. Going into the playoffs, I would take Falcons defense over the Packers. That's the only one that's close. Just my opinion, granted.
  22. Who? I can't think of any playoff team with a worse defense than the Packers, and most aren't even close.
  23. Good stuff Pete. Reminded me of some else that started with Melvin. Defensive shifts. Brewers were one of the first to use them extensivelyrics. Also, forgot another early Stearns trend- walks. We heard about it in ST, and thene saw it play out. Focus on drawing walKS. There is so much data in all forms, the big challenge now is deciphering what is useful to front office, vs the coaching staff, then down to the players. Fascinating stuff, would love to have all-access pass for a week.
  24. They had 4 "Top of Rotation" guys. Woodson, Collins, Matthews, and Raji. Plus several other Mid Rotation" guys Luke Tram on Williams, Bishop, Pickett. This year, as an example, they have zero TOR defensive players. Scheme all you want, but you need a few studs. Also, having a bad defense may be helping them in a strange way. I think it's caused a sense of urgency in the offense. That follows through to play calling, Rodgers focus to think you need to score every drive. Just having that comfort level of "we have outscore them and that's ok."
  25. Yea, and not sure what they can do to make things better next season. If you have one true shutdown CB, it helps solve a lot of problems. (Even Shields wasn't one of those guys, but he was closer at least.) Quick look at FA CBs, and not much there. (As if Thompson would sign a big time FA Corner anyhow.) Maybe you get lucky in the draft and find one, it happens. Then Peppers and Matthews could both be gone, so the scramble continues in the Front Seven. I just hope Brice finds a permanent role, at least he hits anything that moves- hard.
