  1. Gord Ash was recently quoted as saying Balfour has a "Plus Fastball" and a "Plus Slider" as well. It's a tough call. Who should we believe, major league front office personnel, or someone who refers to people who have actually earned their way to be major league ball players as "piles of crap?"
  2. Do you really think the Brewers are in the "searching for nuggets" mode? They might have been the last 5 years or more, but this year, it should be the opposite. This year we toss a few of our nuggets out there and catch a real ball player to help for the stretch. Even if we did pick up the guy you like, where would he fit on the roster? Where would he get playing time, with all the games being meaningful? Why would we need another project in AAA with Parra, Balfour, Dillard and Sarfate already trying to crack the big club? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I just don't see this happening. One question: How/where did you find out that Jim Hickey is a "bad pitching coach?" I had thought this guy was pretty good. He came from the Astros, where he and Maddux were developing a staff of young pitchers that went to the World Series and playoffs. More details please.
  3. Shut 'em down one inning, give up a run the next. That's how you have an ERA of 4.5 wherever you go. "Tiger" doesn't change its stripes.
  4. Michael Brantley starting to settle in a bit. 4 for 4 tonight thru 6 innings. Atta boy, don't give 'em a chance to send you anywhere but up.
  5. I agree - sell high if it nets a solid return for the stretch.
  6. Lofton for Gross even up might make sense. Gross can play CF, and with some pop in his bat in that park, he'd probably be pretty good. Lofton as a veteran 4th outfielder in a pennant drive would also make plenty of sense. Do it.
  7. Normally I'd agree with the homestate statement 100%. But Atlanta has built a pretty good system giving Georgia kids priority (of course Georgia has plenty of top players from which to choose). So I'll say I agree with your statement 99.95%.
  8. Future? Of course. Curious phrasing of the question, especially concerning it's about a #1 pick with a 95+ fastball..
  9. Pasma puts up a bunch of zeros(6k's in 4 innings), Lucroy and Wycklendt with home runs, Newton 2 more hits, and 2 hits for Haydel, as he seems to be coming out of ether.
  10. Brantley 1 for 1 with 3 walks. He has an amazing approach at the plate.
  11. FOTC does not grab me to the point that I can't miss it, but I do laugh a lot when I watch it. It reminds me of Monty Python. Dead pan humor, ironic very clever twists, mixed in with some music. Now if those 2 don dresses and have a "drag race" it will convince me it is Python reincarnated.
  12. This is the type of pitcher that Melvin seems to like. That's how he rescued Doug Davis from the scrap heap and kept promoting Villanueva, even though neither of them had the measurable of velocity. I heard him in an interview talk about guys like this, who just keep getting people out. He loves 'em. No offense intended, but for now given the choice on this one, I think I'll trust DM's instincts instead of DrWood's.
  13. Minors is a good place to hone their defensive skills, and almost always they come around as they mature into young adults. Thankfully there's no rush to get them here early and destroy them, as past administartions have been known to do. There's plenty of time for them to grow.
  14. Welcome Capt and thanks for the insight. Please stick around and post some more. We are sure enjoying following Caleb as he starts out hot.
  15. Nope. BFN has actual baseball discussions with research and smarts involved. Absolutely no reason to go anywhere else.
  16. Gammons said the other night that the Rangers are holding out for a "Top Prospect", and one GM told him that it looks like they will get it, because some contender will need Gagne down the stretch. So for us that probably means Inman or Jeffress.
  17. Couple of things I did not see mentioned. A day up in Wine Country is great. We took a half day and walked around Stanford and Cal campuses. We also just took a day and drove down Hwy 1 along the coast line. Just gorgeous. All of the other things mentioned are really fun for us tourists, including the Wharf.
  18. Hova, can reviewers stop from being anything but pretentious themselves? This show is genius, with lots of VERY good actors you will recognize. Start it up and enjoy. I have watched every episode 3 times and see new stuff I missed every time. It's like watching the Marx brothers in that regard.
  19. Wow. That's a good baseball man to let go. This organization better figure out what they want to do. They fired O'Brien after a short stint and brought in Krivsky, signed some free agents made a couple of trades that did not really work out, so they fire the manager, like that's gonna help. Just keep on sucking guys. It's fine with me.
  20. Am I the only person watching this show? It's the 4th episode tonight and I'm in stitches. What fantastically bizarre characters and clever writing. I am already hopelessly addicted. EDIT: I spelled Cincinnati incorrectly. Edit: Update. - Toby
  21. I disagree with the statement that the Yankees management is terrible - as a blanket statement. I think Cashman is one of the best GM's out there. The Boss demands immediate success. That means signing free agents and trading away prospects. The revenue sharing has greatly diminished their former way of doing business. Pitchers like Ben Sheets, Aaron Harang, Gil Meche all were able to sign with small market teams, where as before the Yankees would just step in and take them. Now the only veteran players that are available to them are underperforming bad contracts like Abreu. Teams feel they can sign their some of their best players and aren't pressed to trade with the same urgency as before(Carlos Lee not withstanding). Over the past year, Cashman has quietly and quickly built up their minor leagues, putting together a pretty good stable of top quality minor league pitchers.
  22. Well, since we've had this interesting discussion, Gillespie has had 3 good games in a row, showing off his pop. If that's what it takes, then I'll continue to question the dude, and he can keep on raking. I wonder if Lucroyand/or Fryer plays some at WV this year, so Whiteside can move to Helena for a bit.
  23. I guess Gindl doesn't want any more nights off. 2 for 2 already in the 3rd inning bringing his average to a nifty .500. Will he be over or under that mark by game's end? edit: under, but only because the last ball he hit was driven to the warning track in left center and run down. He ends up 3 for 5.
  24. Significant difference between GM and Scouting Director, but Jack has sure earned a chance if he gets it.
  25. No hits for Gindl tonight(he's not playing) Farris leading off seems like a nice try, and Haydel 9th also seems like a good idea. Both were struggling at the opposite ends of the line up, and sometimes all it takes is a view from a different angle. Both got hits tonight. Might have been a clean organizational sweep except for the baby Brewers getting edged by a couple in the bottom of the 8th. Harvard boy with a couple of hits and Zealous with a jack (5'10" / 220 ? ! Woah big fella)
