  1. "Get the net Blainer" - My first recollections of listening to (Braves) games on the radio. Hearing Merle Harmon's familiar voice opening day of the very first season was exciting beyond description. It gave the Brewers a sense of legitimacy right away. Good thing too, because they really stunk for a long time. Condolences to the family.
  2. I agree Crew7. Scarpetta dropped in the draft due to the injury. Now that he's healthy, he's a very solid prospect. If wasn't, they never would have wasted the roster spot.
  3. Sorry Valpo, I agree with T.G 76. The pros are completely - 100% - different than the amateur sports with regards to their goals. The only idea they have is to make the playoffs. Period. Hart is spot on with his comments. Hart's comments defeatist? Hardly. All he's saying is that he can only worry about the Brewers and his contribution to the team trying to win the next game. You only have to look at last year and see the Cubs with the best record, going down immediately in the playoffs. All those regular sesaon wins qualified then for zilch in the playoffs, and it turned out to be a bitterly disappointing season for them. I understand your comments from a fan's perspective, where we are looking at rivalries, standings, upcoming schedule and all that stuff, but players have quite a different view. Actually, IMO it shows growth on Hart's part, understanding that the only goal is the playoffs/W.S. The only way to get there is if his team plays well enough to win the next game - day after day - .
  4. Former #1 overall pick Matt Bush designated for assignment as a result of the signing. Wow - and we're disappointed that Weeks is just a player and not a superstar. I guess this provides a bit of perspective.
  5. Steroid era guy with loads of questions concerning is off the field antics(remember his made up story after he hurt himself on his motorcycle?) and well know as a terrible clubhouse guy(numerous fights with teammates including the fight with Bonds in the dugout). His HR #s as a 2nd baseman suggest HOF. But he was average on his best day as a fielder. He wasn't a favorite at all with reporters. It will be interesting to see what happens after voters have a few years to reflect on his total package.
  6. On XM yesterday, a reporter for the Sun Times said that the De Rosa deal for minor league pitching, the signing of Miles as a significantly cheaper replacement, this deal with Bradley, then a trade of Marquis to Colorado(with the Cubs picking up a bunch of that salary) are pre-cursor moves to the Peavy talks being rekindled. I must admit, it sounded pretty smart, and as a Brewer fan I did not like it one bit.
  7. Leading off and playing 2nd base. If the light ever goes on and stays on, it will be special............... very special.
  8. Well, let's ask the Mets. They appear to be close to signing him today, per XM radio reports. edit: add source
  9. IMO, the attitude towards player development is dramatically changed for the better under Doug Melvin's tenure. This need to be recognized as a "good move." Yes Jack Z gets a lot of credit and deservedly so. But now we have Reed Nichols in charge of player development. Each player has their own path of development and no one is promoted beyond their capability to handle their new environment. Minor leaguers get late season promotions, so tey can experience the playoffs. The pitchers have all been brought along slowly and cautiously. The position players all had their own path. Years ago Parra, Gallardo, Escobar, La Porta and Gamel would all have been up here for a year or more, and probably been destroyed in the process. Jeffress and Cain would have been next to be destroyed. Jack finding the players was great, but the steady path of development they each have been given should not go unnoticed.
  10. The talk of Cameron's value with regards to how well the team is expected to do next season doesn't have to be looked at right now, as it can easily be addressed at the trading deadline. If it looks like a down year, he can be moved to a contender for a nice lower level prospect. If the year looks ok, then he can be a key component to another drive to the playoffs. IMO, it makes more sense to go about it that way, and decide when there is more data available
  11. The core of the team is all 27 and under - you bet they are still considered a "young team." However, the blueprint of having all of the younger players with so much mlb experience as they are nearing prime years should be cause for great excitement.
  12. Look, they could have just as easily not re-upped Cameron and received nothing. If I remember correctly, there were a great many people that thought it was a dumb idea to renew him and just let him go. So looking at it from that perspective, anything that DM gets is a plus. He's an aging CF with a couple of good years left. Return will not be overwhelming.
  13. I was a Braves fan as a little guy. Henry Aaron was my favorite player to an extreme. When the White Sox played here for a couple of summers, I went to almost every game, but never became much of a Sox fan at all (but I did see Mickey Mantle play - that was cool). Brewers came junior year in HS. I was a fan since day one. Many skipped high school and went to the first opening day, and the next day at school it was the buzz all around Arrowhead. (I was too much of a sissy to skip). I went to the first Saturday home game and then went to a dozen games that summer. Steve Hovely started out hot, Danny Walton had a good first couple of months and Tommy Harper was a legit MLB player. Marty Pattin was the only pitcher on the team who resembled someone who be called an MLB pitcher. Man alive did they suck - for a long time. But it was baseball, and that was all that mattered.
  14. XM radio is reporting it as a done deal to the Yankees this morning.
  15. All peripheals aside - Stay away from one year wonders, especially when that year was in a contract year. You're gonna pay this guy like an all star(which he was) and never get the projected production.
  16. It was kinda cool that Jenks got the hit off of another former Brewer(Balfour), and I was not the least bit upset that the Brewers got rid of either of them. I was really was happy for Jenkins.
  17. Oh, I seem to remember a time when we did not even have a prospect worth sending for years in a row. There were some mighy lean years during the Sal Bando era. It would be nice if they were all great here recently, but it is what it is. They'll be fine.
  18. This Brewers situation reminds me of Ron Wolf hiring an "experienced guy" in recently fired Ray Rhodes, while Philly takes a little known QB coach named Andy Reid off of our own staff. None of these candidates are exciting at all.
  19. I really liked Willie Randolph the year he played for the Brewers. You could tell then that he was a consumate pro, did all the little things that won the game. That team he managed the last 2 years choked both with Randolph at the helm and then again without him. Clearly, the players who could not play for Randolph or Manuel should shoulder the blame. I'm a big Randolph fan.
  20. Thought you all might like to see how DM is perceived by his peers. From a Dallas Morning news interview with GM Jon Daniels: MJH: Is there a GM -- past or present other than the guy who brought you along, John Hart -- who you see as your role model and if so, what have you learned from him and how has that influenced you in this job? JD: I can think of four guys right away: Pat Gillick, Doug Melvin, Mark Shapiro and Theo [Epstein]. With Pat, obviously you have to admire the way he builds an organization. He's a big proponent of continuity. He knows his people. Pat's a guy who knows where all of his scouts are on any given day. He knows their wives first names. He knows their kids. He makes sure that everyone in the organization knows that they are valuable and that's been a key to his success wherever he goes. Doug: the way he carries himself. He's probably about the most respected GM in the game. His honesty. He's direct. Straight shooter. I hope to be similar to those guys. http://rangersblog.dallas...ngers-gm-jon-daniels.html I resurrected this because IMO I was just amazed that this was even a topic. Some of the sentiments along the lines that we need a clean house and a new start amazed me. Like that darn 90 win season and playoff appearence should trigger a fan uprising. Edit spelling
  21. I was a Brewers fan when we had Frank "Trader" Lane as the GM. Lots of trades. All he did was rotate junk for junk. All it did was create the illusion that something good was happening. But nothing good ever did happen, except we got to read all the neat articles about how the new guys were now the answer(the answer to another 70 win season as it turned out). As for me, I'd rather have a trade here or there that actually has some substance.
  22. Meddling? I'd call it supporting the GM. It was only after an extended period of free agency had elapsed that the Brewers approached Suppan. and Mark A helped the GM seal the deal by showing him their long range goals and capabilities.
  23. The Toy Cannon - Jimmy Wynn. Played for the Brewers briefly at the end of the his career. Had some really nice years for the Astros.
  24. We already had trouble with right handed pitching, with Prince being the only left handed bat in the line up. How in the blazes can we trade him? Bringing in Gamel might be one way, but at best you remain in the same boat. They need both Gamel and Prince for balance. I'd check to see if Hardy wants to sign a Braun - like deal. If not, then he's the guy who gets traded. If does sign, then unfortunately, I agree with the group that wants to trade Escobar for pitching.
  25. He played outfield in the minors for a couple of years. I saw him play in Huntsville and he could at least catch fly balls. I doubt he'd be running down any balls in the gap though.
