  1. I say bat Gomez leadoff every day the rest of the year. We are not playing for anything anymore this year. It will solidify our good draft pick for next year. Good to see our manager thinking about the future of our franchise. At least somebody making decisions seems to be.
  2. Maddux benefited from a very wide strike zone.
  3. I kind of doubt Cain got top dollar. He didn't hit free agency so I don't think we can say that Greinke will not get a contract as big or bigger. Their situations are not comparable once Greinke hits FA.
  4. Hindsight is 20/20. We may have had a better team starting this year and continuing for several years if we had gone the other route. When the trades were made the playoffs were not a sure ting.
  5. 2010 was the perfect time to begin a rebuild and work to build a solid franchise for years to come. Lots of good young talent with Fielder and Hart as good available trade pieces. Instead we went the other way and gutted the farm system. We were not contenders in either 2009 or 2010. Melvin and many fans got a taste in 2008 and have been addicted ever since.
  6. I miss the days when the Astros were buyers at the deadline even when they were out if it. It kept them down for many many years. Kind of like the Brewers this year.
  7. Given what we have had at SS the last couple years Escobar would have been just fine. Oddorizzi and Lawrie were the guys we probably will miss. You cannot use WAR to evaluate a trade when the prospects have not even made it to the majors. It is borderline useless.
  8. I was lukewarm on the Greinke and Marcum deals to begin with. Many people were. It wasn't like the CC deal where there was close to a consensus at the time of the deal. We were on the upswing with a very strong farm system and young talent in 2008. I think many people were gearing up for a rebuild in 2010. I know I was waiting for a Fielder deal since the start of that year which probably contributed to being a little happy for the Marcum and Greinke deals instead of being really excited.
  9. I can only really speak for myself but I don't think people are saying the Brewers are a bad team at all. They have played poorly and have put themselves in a position where they would have to significantly outplay other teams to make the playoffs. I just don't think they are better let alone significantly better. Given that, we are not really in a realistic position to make the playoffs this year. Let's assume everybody ahead of us plays .500 the rest of the way. Here is what we would have to do to tie these teams. Division Reds 43 28 60.6% Pirates 42 29 59.2% Cardinals 38 33 53.5% Wild Card Braves 41 30 57.7% Dodgers 39 32 54.9% Mets 38 33 53.5% Once you think about the probability of these teams going .500 combined with the records we would have to put up, the playoffs are not a realistic goal for this year.
  10. Almost one of the worst things is an umpire who will not get help.
  11. Keep Weeks in the bottom of the lineup while Gomez bats #2. Awesome.
  12. Gomez batting #2 against a RHP. Must mean either our manager has made yet another boneheaded decision or Morgan is traded.
  13. I hear he is a good teammate too.
  14. Unfortunately he doesn't play any of those positions.
  15. So you are saying there is a chance.
  16. Netflix.
  17. Why would we want to trade for him?
  18. I do wonder if this is a situation where DM has a couple/few offers to consider, has been given maybe two or three more days to decide, and they want to ensure ZG doesn't get hurt. Pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease
  19. Let me just stop you right there. This team is already partially broken up and certainly will be by the end of the year. A couple good trades would give us a much better chance of a short turn around ater a down year next year.
  20. That's where I am. Everything being equal I wouldn't mind seeing what we can do. As of right now, things are not equal. We are a significant amount of games out of 1st place and the wild card. Time to fold the cards and walk away till next year.
  21. Send him back to AAA and worry about it in the offseason.
  22. That is sort of the whole point though. We shouldn't pay FA dollars or close to it on declining years of players.
  23. McCutchen has had a ridiculously good first half of the season. Braun has had a ridiculously good career. Braun's season low batting average is also the same as McCutchen's season high. It's not much of a discussion until McCutchen proves he can put up all star numbers year in and year out. And their career OBPs are exactly the same, even though Braun is two years further into his peak. Plus McCutchen plays a phenomenal CF, while Braun plays a very mediocre LF (although, I will say he's looked better this season). Does he? The stats don't bear that out. Below average to average from the looks of it. I have little doubt he would be very good in a corner but he doesn't grade out well compared to his peers in CF.
