  1. I have thought for years that Uecker should be dong TV and BA should be on the radio side. Not that BA is bad by any stretch but Uecker would be better as a TV guy.
  2. One season or part of one season is still a small sample. You typically want to start with at least 3 seasons as a baseline then adjust a bit up or down from that or do like Russ said. A nagging injury or being off a bit can lead to a couple bad months pretty easy. A couple bad months can really drag a season down even though a player's true talent may not have changed. Considering Weeks career so far and the last couple months I would think that something was bothering him for the first couple months rather than think that his skills have significantly changed so I think his career numbers would be a good guess at future production. Keep in mind that his career numbers are a good bit lower than his numbers over 2009-2011. Given Lucroy's career MiLB numbers (.299/.379/.459/.838) and age I would think he could have improved. I wouldn't put him in the same class of hitter as Weeks though. Even if we assume they are close(like the projections say they might be) I would go with the everyday player over the catcher at the top of the order.
  3. Contradiction overload. You say he's not scoring enough runs and then post stats that say over half of his at bats this season have come before players like Cody Ransom, Cesar Izturis, Jeff Bianchi, Martin Maldonado, pitchers and pinch hitters. It's hardly a contradiction. Want to eliminate the stats from when he's batting sixth, and concentrate on his productivity when he's batting leadoff or second only? Neither actually. When you start splitting up stats they become less and less useful for predicting future production and that is what most people care about(or should at least). If you are going to continue using small samples there is nowhere for this discussion to go.
  4. If you read this forum last year you also heard many people on the opposite side that said McGehee's 2009-2010 stats were a mirage based on his MiLB numbers.
  5. Your whole argument is based on a small sample. Considering the time he spent batting 6th with Isturis, the pitcher and whomever was the catcher batting behind him I think 74 runs is pretty good. Because his career numbers are a better indicator of what to expect going forward than what he has done just this year.
  6. Oh my gosh, the Twins are shopping Joe Mauer. or not.
  7. So no other teams will be receiving the same amount form ESPN?
  8. We are one of the smallest markets in baseball. Yes we had a $100m payroll this year but we cannot sustain that.
  9. I don't even want to be .500 this year. We are not making the playoffs so the higher draft position we get the better. So for me I want to see how the young players do and ruin the Cardinals season.
  10. If you say so. Like I said though, every single player goes on waivers in August.
  11. Every single player goes on waivers in August. Not a big deal.
  12. I never really paid all that much attention before but PNC Park definitely has a much better CF camera angle than Miller Park does.
  13. Izturis as a backup wasn't great but not on the level of Yuni and Kotsay. He wasn't really a big part at the beginning and didn't stick around all year like the other 2.
  14. While he was bad this year I think the contract overall was a good one. I personally wouldn't have released him but if they had plans to audition young guys I am not sure where Wolf would have fit in. Outside of the personal catcher stuff I was very happy to have him on the team. Good luck Randy.
  15. No way A-Ram wins a gold glove. Wright will probably win it. He's won them before - even when he hasn't deserved them. If not, Zimmerman will. He has the rep. A-Ram's reputation as a mediocre fielder will cost him big time. What made Yuni so special was that despite his bad range he was still amongst league leaders in errors.
  16. You can't make errors on balls you can't get to. That is what made Yuni so special on defense last year.
  17. So glad this team moved to the AL.
  18. Why would you fire a guy at this point in the season when your team is expected to be bad?
  19. I would mostly ignore all of those stats except OBP, SLG and OPS. I would only use BA if comparing it to OBP or SLG to give me some idea about how a player gets his value. The problem Gomez' OPS is that it is a SLG heavy OPS. One point of OBP is worth about 1.7-2 points of SLG depending on what you read. I don't like Range Factor at all. Playing behind flyball or ground ball pitchers will influence it. I prefer wOBA for offense as the quickest stat. I use multiple years of DRS, UZR and watching a player to get a feel for their defense. Again, the only real objection to Gomez starting is batting him in the top of the order.
  20. His bunt hit % is way up but his infield hit% is about the same as in previous years.(although it is hard to say how often he is bunting for hits without further digging. That number could skew very easily if he only bunts for hits on rare occasions) His fly balls are going out at a 3% higher rate than the rest of his career which would be an indication he is hitting balls harder. He is hitting balls in the air less than in any previous season. or you could look at it as he had a bad year in 2010. He had a spike in 2009 but didn't follow it up with a good year in 2010. Right within his age 25-28 seasons. SLG is going to go up and down a lot with BA. If you look at Andrew McCutchen(or Weeks for that matter) you see a similar jump in SLG and ISO.

  22. The more we break things down the less predictive ability in them. You need to regress them more. Remember a few years back when A-Rod was a choker in the playoffs? Monty did a pretty good summation.
