  1. We don't know this. Yes, it's possible and probable, but it could just as easily blow up in our faces. I'm pretty sure 99% of us at this time last year said something to the effect of, "Casey will be great at 3B this year, the numbers show it." We all know how that turned out. I am in that 1%. Although I didn't think he would be this bad.
  2. I would go with Morgan for next year and Schafer in 2013.
  3. If you look at Morgan's career splits 2011 wasn't really far out of line with most of his career. He had a bad year in 2010 but he has been pretty good for most of his career against RHP.
  4. I thought you may be assuming a Morgan trade. Gomez was a super 2 so he has 4 arby years. I agree that it shouldn't be Morgan vs Gomez. We should keep both and platoon them. At least until Schafer is ready. CF was a position of strength this year. Probably the only position where we got both above average offense and defense. I say don't touch it.
  5. I agree, but Prince watches some of his tape measure jobs too. What gets me is when Pujols watches a long fly ball, and it ends up not going out of the park. To my knowledge, Prince has never done that. Right. Everyone admires their home runs sometimes. Pujols does it every single time. And his doubles. And his warning track outs. People were bothered when Hall did it for us.
  6. Sorry you feel that way. Most of my posts have just stated that he isn't average like some people like to pretend he is. In fact he is well below average. I didn't trash him every single day but you are entitled to your hyperbole. Hairston was an option at SS after he was picked up. I put that on the manager though. I believe a left side of Hairston Green would have been better than Hairston and Yuni.
  7. Only in a sentence with Gomez should Morgan be called a poorer defender. The guy is still above average in CF.
  8. Why will Gomez be gone?
  9. It wasn't just the stats. Yuni didn't look good either. It wasn't just the stats.
  10. 1) They are paid to play baseball but I would guess they also have some contractual obligation to make certain appearances for the team. 2) Considering how poorly MiLB players in general are paid outside of their signing bonus I have no problem with players getting as much as they can. They sign a contract. When that is over, all bets are off. Most of these guys will only get one big contract if they are good enough.
  11. I cannot believe at this point that Casey's previous 2 years were a fluke. He's young, relatively cheap, and proven-productive, which are the exact traits we'd be looking for in his replacement. I wouldn't really call 29 young for a baseball player. Between his MiLB stats and this last year there is plenty to say that 2009-2010 may have been fluke seasons for McGehee. I would think he will be better against LHP going forward. On the other hand I would rather not see Gamel of Green platooned. I like this plan. It is the one I would go with.
  12. That is the kind of thinking that leads to signing a pitcher for 4 years/$42m.
  13. Average is 2 WAR. I don't think I would even want Dunn at this point anymore let alone trade Gamel for him. I just looked up his contract and no way do I want him. 4 years/$56M (2011-14) signed by Chicago White Sox as a free agent 12/3/1011:$12M, 12:$14M, 13:$15M, 14:$15M
  14. Replacement level is still 2 wins below average. I figured he would be close to replacement level. Close is a subjective term but the average MLB SS hit .262/.316/.378/.695. Betancourt .268/.271/.381/.652. I guess .381 is above .378 so sure his SLG is technically above average. Of course we wouldn't have gone any further with a replacement level SS. I didn't want a replacement level SS, I wanted an average one. To be honest, he hit even worse than I expected. Or 1B.Even Money said Gamel was okay at 1B this year.
  15. There is a chance that Gamel or Green could be very good MLB hitters. Going with cheap veterans at 1B, RF or 3B is a safer with a more predictable outcome, but I think you have to bet onpossible upside a bit if you want to stay competitive as a mid/small market team in baseball. In my opinion the potential downside isn't much worse with Green or Gamel but the potential upside is much higher.
  16. SS in general get paid less than a lot of other positions. Elite 1B, SP, RP and OF get paid a lot. Reyes will probably top out around $15-17m per year at the very top end. Fielder will probably start out over $20m per year. It really seems counter intuitive to modern player evaluation but players are paid for their bat regardless of position. That is why Weeks contract was such a good deal. Except for the very top guys top 5 talent at SS and 2B comes at about half the price of top 5 talent at 1B or the outfield.
  17. Lee hasn't really been a good hitter over the last 3 years. I think Gamel could be expected to come close to Lee's production with better defense.
  18. He really wasn't. He was one of the worst hitting SS in baseball this year. Well below average.
  19. Sure, the line-up doesn't need to be overhauled to get back to 90+wins. Neither does the rotation. But that's not taking a step foward. It's getting back to where we were at best. Could even be worse if we're counting on the likes of Gamel and Green, who are somehwat unknown quantities. I am not sure the Brewers would get back to 90+ wins with the exact same team. The pitching health for one thing probably contributed to at least a few wins more than expected.
  20. However, Greinke was out for a month and a half, and the shuffling of our rotation to make sure Estrada got as few starts as possible probably had something to due with some underperformance in the first half and Marcum running into a brick wall with innings come playoff time. Also, we didn't have anyone as AAA insurance this season, so we were very lucky we weren't hit with more injuries. Next year, we should have some Major-League-ready arms in AAA, allowing for us to have some injuries without imploding. Greinke out for a month and a half isn't really that big of a deal when you look at starting pitcher health of all of baseball year to year. I have not done 2011 yet but no team in baseball used fewer than 7 starter in 2010 or 2009. We had extremely good luck with starting pitcher health this you which would contribute to the team playing above expectations. No starter made more than 33 starts this year. The only ones who got switched around while Greinke was out were Estrada and Narveson. Marcum only pitched 210.1 innings this year. He pitched 195.1 last year. I don't think he hit a wall. I suspect he got injured sometime around the end of August or the beginning of September. Either that or he lost the feel for his pitches for a few games which just happened to be in the playoffs. 2010 Pitchers Teams 7 - 2 8 - 6 9 - 5 10 - 11 11 - 3 12 - 2 14 - 1 2009 Pitchers Teams 7 - 1 8 - 1 9 - 7 10 - 4 11 - 5 12 - 9 14 - 2 15 - 1
  21. No it really isn't. Starting Kotsay in CF cost us having at least a game 7 with Yo starting.
  22. No it doesn't. Maybe one team a year has that kind of luck with their starters. Usually no team uses less than 7-8 pitchers to start games.
  23. I hope he will give guys like Gamel and Green a chance next year. I also hope Melvin refuses to give him guys like Kotsay and Yuni. Watching them get used like they were was almost unbearable.
