  1. Gomez(or Cain) would not have used an option. Cain already used an option this year. Gomez would not have spent enough time in the minors to use an option. Here is a question, why the crap do you leave Parra in there to get his brains beat in if you have Riske available to pitch?
  2. Not really a big deal either way. Not sure I would rather have Gomez playing for us right now instead of Riske though.
  3. Corey Patterson should be in the discussion. At least his bat should. .253/.293/.405/.698
  4. Josh Butler. He missed a good part of the beginning of the season with an injury.
  5. I guess I don't mind somebody else getting a chance in September except then we have to go through the whole "that guy pitched great in September for us" that follows. We saw it last offseason with Narveson. We need to temper our expectations based off of September numbers.
  6. So Parra gets the shaft again. The offense bails out the pitching two days in a row but doesn't come to the aid of Parra. Parra again takes one for the team when it is apparent he should be pulled.
  7. Tool - Undertow
  8. SS .239/.296/.319/.615 CF .248/.302/.388/.690 Wow I didn't think it was that bad. However I disagree that this is the reason we are bad. Our defense and pitching are not good to put it nicely.
  9. Even if UZR is a good representation of what a player has contributed on defense, they may not get the chances to make a decent contribution on defense every single year. That is why we see many guys have a positive or negative contribution on defense from year to year. A guy making most of his value on defense and hitting like Gomez is going to be less useful than a guy hitting much better and only having average defense. At least at the plate you are going to get your chances to contribute.
  10. He was completely dominating AAA. I'm sure he or the player's union would have filed a grievance sooner than that. The Nats couldn't argue they had five pitchers better than him in the majors.Just because you don't have better players in the majors doesn't mean you have to bring a guy up. Strasburg wasn't stretched out to pitch a full season yet. They should have topped him out at AA this year no matter how dominating he was.
  11. I know this will sound like hindsight but I would not have brought up Strasburg until next June at the earliest because of service time reasons.
  12. UZR has to be regressed halfway even after 3 years. A WAR based almost entirely on WAR is suspect at best. He is a terrible hitter and has no place in the majors in any capacity beyond a pinch runner defensive replacement at this point. Maybe as a starter on a rebuilding team but only based on his potential.
  13. Ennder was pretty high on Gomez last offseason. I remember something about showing signs of having better plate discipline. Woah there, don't go so far as to say I was high on Gomez. I said he might not be as terrible as people think and there were reasons to think he could be growing as a player. I had extremely low expectations for him still and was one of the few people who thought signing Edmonds was a good idea. Here is one of my posts about him... I guess I should have said Ennder was pretty high on Gomez compared to everybody else.
  14. Gomez hasn't had enough time in CF to have UZR show how well he has actually played.
  15. Nobody could possibly play defense well enough to justify the offense Gomez has put up.
  16. Iirc you were posting that Gomez had some hidden growth last season, too. Can't remember why you cited that it was hidden then... LD% maybe? Ennder was pretty high on Gomez last offseason. I remember something about showing signs of having better plate discipline.
  17. .260 sucks even if you are a power hitter unless you are walking quite a bit.
  18. If one guy makes the draft does that mean losing that one guy breaks the draft.
  19. I think a lot of that upward movement is deceiving. Axford and Lucroy were towards the top and they graduated off the list. I would say that nobody dropped would be more accurate.
  20. It is to some extent as players are easier to replace at one end of the spectrum than the other. Based on contribution to the defense it may not be. It depends on what you mean by valuable. I have also seen a modified defensive spectrum where the 3B and CF are flipped which also makes sense to me. We don't see to many CF shifted to 3B or I guess 3B shifted to CF. DH--1B--LF--RF--3B--CF--2B--SS DH--1B--LF--RF--CF--3B--2B--SS I know it is wiki but here are a few other interesting points. The bolded line is why I want Weeks extended and am not to excited about the Hart extension. It is also why Fielder, despite his bat, shouldn't be to big of a loss.
  21. It looks like the top 20 RFget more chances than the top 20 LF. Pretty similar though. Having to make the throw to 3B is the only really big difference. Some later stuff on the dfensive spectrum puts LF and RF pretty equal.
  22. The only really troubling thing is the reports that he only cares about hitting and apparently doesn't want to put in the work on defense. I don't know if they are true or not but that is what we have heard and has been insinuated in scouting reports. Of course scouting reports are prone to small samples and group-think. Lawrie isn't Braun special with the bat either.
  23. Just about anything sabermetric having to do with defensive.
  24. The "lacking in Social Graces"....well, he was a 19 year old kid away from home for the first time, You mean the guy who played for the Canadian national team several times?
  25. About one win worth of offense over a full season worth of PA.
