    A Big Ten hockey conference with North Dakota, CC and Denver would be very tough. I would hope they at least bring North Dakota with them. I really like the WCHA and am not to enthusiastic about a B10 hockey conference. It would be nice to see the Badgers on TV more though. Of course last year we got to watch women's volleyball instead of B10 hockey teams matching up.

    Terrible fielding instincts. That is why he would be a really bad 1B. At least in the outfield he has more time to make up for it with his athleticism.

    The Brewers don't need more HR hitters that strikeout a lot - they need guys to get on base in front of the HR hitters they already have. Escobar doesn't fit that description right now. Escobar also possesses the ability to play elite defense if he can put it all together - While Hardy plays solid defense, I wouldn't call it elite. Until he does though Hardy is the superior defender. Over the past 3 years Hardy has the second best SS defense in baseball according to UZR/150. I don't know about you, but I think that could be considered elite. Reality is that people had the bar set too high for a rookie this season - I still love Escobar's potential and expect him to continue to make strides next season. Maybe some people did but he fell short of even my low expectations. He couldn't even post an OBP close to .300 this year. .288, ugh, that is pathetic. I am sure everybody hopes he will make strides next year. Another sub .300 OBP and we may be looking for a new SS towards the middle of next year.

    The bottom line is they need to get Gamel playing time and they haven't. He is either going to be a big part of the future or he is going to be traded. Other than his injury he was MLB ready this year. The organization has mishandled and has continued to mishandle him for over a year now. None of these games mean anything to us. We have had 7 games where the game meant nothing to either team and Gamel has all of 2 starts. One was only because Fielder couldn't play.

    I'd figure Lucroy, Odorizzi, and 2 low level guys would be enough to really get the Royals interested. I might do that deal if we were a mid 80's fringe playoff team for the next 2 years. I don't' think we are though. I think we need to hold onto guys like Odorizzi and acquire more long term solutions.

    I thought wins and loses didn't matter since there were no playoff consequences riding on the game. Any excuse to bench Gamel apparently.

    I have to be honest that I question Baseball America quite a bit because of this fact.

    The NL league average for starters this year is 4.10, so even with this hot streak Wolf isn't even average. Going forward, age will likely start to affect him. He'll be 35 before next season is over. This year maybe but it has an average starter in the NL has typically been around 4.30 or higher. In 2009 the middle 32 starts for NL teams were a 4.24 ERA.

    Because we all know people without emotions (like Macha) don't laugh. Well the laughing part should be in blue then. The rest sounds like what they are actually doing though.

    I think this lineup is further proof of a strong dislike of Gamel. I would have went with Weeks Gamel Hart Fielder McGehee Cain Lucroy Escobar Pitcher and you can mix up the last 4 any way you like.

    My hope is that Fielder and McGehee are the ones to go while Weeks getting an extension. With Gamel and Lawrie replacing McGehee and Fielder. I would not be surprised at all to see Weeks go though. I feel that the team really likes McGehee though and he will stick around. I don't' value McGehee much because of his age and minor league track record. I am still waiting for him to drop off. He will also be 32 by the time he is eligible for free agency.

    The draft in 2011 is highly unlikely to have any impact until at least the 2014 season. More like the 2015 season.

    I could see Attanasio keeping Fielder around because he thinks we can be a playoff team next year with just a few pitching additions.

    Look at it this way. You will probably have to pay about $4m+ a year for an average free agent pitcher. Doug Davis cost us $5m+ this year. If we can get even 2 league average pitchers for Fielder we are looking at least close to $8m in savings over paying a free agent. Fielder plus his entire salary is easily covered by the savings of two average pitchers at league minimum over 3 years. If we can get some top of the rotation talent, that is easily worth more than one year of Fielder in money and talent.

    I see no reason to call up Luis Cruz let alone actually put him on the field. He was a bad hitter in AAA this year. He has been a bad hitter in the minors through his whole career. He is not a good player. He is an organizational place holder until somebody with talent comes along. Just for reference he hit .309/.414/.723 this year in AAA. That .309 is OBP not BA. He is a career .295/.404/.699 hitter in AAA over 1200+ PA. Again that is .295 OBP not BA. His major league numbers are a very small sample but they make Carlos Gomez look like Babe Ruth.

    I see no reason we couldn't pick up most of Fielder's salary if the return is good enough. Your signature is not working. Unfortunate it is.

    Just wait, after the season Doug Melvin will probably announce that Macha's option was picked up at last year's winter meetings.

    Logan: I agree that playing poorly early hurts morale; but letting that influence your (the players') attitude the rest of the season pretty much takes away and Rockies-esque comeback possibilities. A strong leader can foster a better attitude throughout that process IMO and that gives you at least a chance of bouncing back. The Brewers have played around .500 baseball after a poor April and May. Just about how they were expected to. I don think they have played noticeably worse because of how they started. You could even say that Ken Macha's leadership regrouped them to play better after a bad start. In other words they "bounced back." I wouldn't say that because I don't believe any manager has that kind of control aver time and space. Macha is a very very dull manager in my opinion. That doesn't make better or worse than most other managers. Just different.
