  1. I think we need to look at how good he is as a pitcher and not where he ranks in relation to all the other FA pitchers in a really bad looking FA pitching market. Stuff like "he would have been better than all but one pitcher for us last year" and "he is the 2nd best pitcher on the FA market" isn't really justification for the signing. 2nd best looking person in a group of ugly people is still ugly. I don't hate the deal, but I am not a fan of it either. Looks like the deal is for $29.75M over 3 years. Link
  2. Corey Hart is 4 years younger than Church, has better numbers against RHP than Church and is a far better baserunner than Church, which wOBA doesn't take into account. Depends on where you get your wOBA from. Fangraphs wOBA includes baserunning or did a year ago.
  3. Alright, sweet. Gammons to the MLB network. Oh wait, I don't get that channel. ESPN gets worse and worse.
  4. Even though the players & contracts are different, most seem to agree that opting for free agency to acquire good SPing is a bad idea. The only time I think it is a bad idea is when the contract extends multiple years. FA starting pitchers are mostly guys over 30 going into their declining years. Once these deals start to span over a year or two you start talking about guys around 35+ years old in many cases.
  5. Looks like Macha might be forced to let guys run a little more. Good news. With Weeks, Gomez and Escobar in the lineup, he would be making a serious mistake if the running game was handled like it was in 2009.
  6. If you believe them to be around 80 wins now, Davis and Wolf gets them to 84-85 wins, which gets them darn close to the playoffs, or at least in a position where they have a legitimate shot again. I agree that Wolf and Davis would put us in the 84-85 win range, maybe. I don't think that 80ish wins includes lower projections from Parra and Bush. And CF may not decline as much as some think. Gomez is way too young to adequately project at this point. Maybe not as much as some think, but it will decline. Even if Gomez makes the optimistic projections we are still probably talking about two wins.
  7. I finished Dragon Age over the weekend. Somewhere around 45 hours on a mage playthrough. Mages can really dish out the damage, especially once you get the top tier fire , blizzard or lightning spells. I didn't think the ending was very long. On the other hand, the credits went on for almost half an hour I think. I just started a new game as a rogue noble. I will probably play all the way through with a rogue and then play through the rest of the origin stories. I might play all the way through with a warrior, maybe. You keep any specializations learned on any subsequent playthrough. You can also buy a book to learn a specialization, use it an drevert to a previous save. You specialization will still be unlocked, but you will have your money back. I played through on hard. While the game wasn't very difficult, you would die very quickly if you walked into a large group of enemies without having a plan. Forgot to add, very very good game although your choices seem to have only minimal consequences.
  8. Just because Wolf is better than our worst pitchers last year doesn't mean we should be giving him a contract in the $10M+ a year range. this is giving me flashbacks of the Brewers signing of Suppan. We had terrible problems with pitching and overreacted by signing an "innings eater." All those innings Suppan ate made him dead weight. If they front-load the contract I would like it better. I am not sure they can do that though. I am sure he is better than Suppan right now, but will he be in 3 years. Even if he is average, is it worth $10M a year to improve your team from 80 wins to 82 wins? I don't think so. However, at this point it may be more important to improve the fan perception of the team than the team itself.
  9. Last year was pretty bad though and I imagine this year will be downright atrocious since he got a raise and his production is going the wrong way. Suppan is getting paid the same in 2010 as 2009 so I am not sure what raise you are talking about unless you are referring to the $2M buyout.
  10. We need at least 7 pitchers. Trading Suppan while he is one of those 7 best makes no sense. If this was a year or two from now when some of our pitching prospects will be breaking into the majors(hopefully), trading Suppan and non-tendering Bush would make a lot of sense. I never liked the Suppan deal and will be glad when we are no longer paying him, but we still need him.
  11. Sure Narveson may be better than Suppan, but even with Narveson, we only have 5 pitchers and Suppan is one of them.
  12. I had no problem with them signing Kendal to a similar deal earlier this offseason. After picking up Kotteras though, this still seems unnecessary.
  13. Depends on the climate, but obviously Minnesota has a climate which a roof would help more than in other places. Even in a southern climate a roof makes a lot of sense. Keeps fans out of the very hot or humid weather in the middle of summer.
  14. Parra is exactly the type of pitcher we would want to trade for. A guy with potential that had a bad year. I am not a big believer in "change of scenery" so I would just hold onto him.
  15. None honestly. He doesn't seem like much of an improvement over some combination of Salome, Lucroy, and Rivera though. Like I said, "if" he can maintain a .340 OBP. He is pretty old and he might only play half the time. That is the thing about spending to improve at the catching position. The improvements are always diminished somewhat by less playing time than most other positions.
  16. Marginal improvement over what we already had much like Gomez. Mid 700's OPS maybe. .729, .825, .752, .700, .761 the last 5 years. If he can keep up his .340is OBP he won't be to bad. Still a bottom of the order hitter. Just another move in a string of unimpressive move for this offseason. Seems unnecessary.
  17. This is the first ballpark since WW II to use wood in the construction in some of the seats. That is because we have more durable materials than wood now. Great they get rid of the baggie and instead add overhanging seats. I thought it was flat out stupid not to have a roof but could somewhat understand since a roof adds quite a bit of money.(but hey, they installed heating elements behind the seats for when people get cold) There is no reason for placing fans in a position where they can interfere with balls in fair territory, nine. So, the overhanging seats create an obstruction in the RF bleacher seats. Doubly stupid. I also don't like how the second non-premium set of seats looks to be as high up as Miller Park's 3rd deck. They have the first deck, then the boxes.
  18. Odd, I didn't know we signed Mulder.
  19. I found this list while looking around today. It lists all the beers associated with either AB InNev or MillerCoors. Link Some of the surprising ones. Goose Island - distribution sights Kona - distribution rights Franziskaner - ownership Red Hook - partial ownership I don't mind partial ownership or full ownership even however, I just think in the back of my mind that things start to drift towards medicre when beg brewers buy smaller ones. They are more concerned with making money(not that every brewer isn't) than making good beer.
  20. If you have a PS3, MLB The Show hands down. If you have an Xbox360, I wouldn't recommend a baseball game. I know other people liked 2K9, but I really hated it. To many really bad bugs. There is a thread on the game from earlier this year. The Bigs 2 is more of an arcade baseball game instead of a simulation.
  21. I am sure there are not repercussions to posting nonsense like that over at the JS blogs either.
  22. I agree that attendance will regress a bit. Using your figures $66-$67M would mean $13M instead of $23M. That is a huge difference and will go quickly even putting in only $500K for each current hole.
  23. If they are planning on a $80M payroll instead of $90M like McCalvy speculates, that would be huge. Link
  24. I wouldn't even bother with a verbal warning and just go with a written warning. If you don't put it in writing, it is like it never happened.
  25. If you don't have good cause to fire somebody they can draw unemployment. Of course even if you do they still might.
