  1. Interesting Haudricourt interview on Homer's radio show. Link Sounds like Macha doesn't like his decisions questioned. Almost to the point of Haudricourt not asking them. That would explain why we never had much of an explanation for Kendall batting leadoff. Haudricourt also mentions Beene brought down lineups for Macha to use in Oakland. Homer talks about how odd many of Macha;s lineup decisions for Thuresday were.
  2. I actually agree with FTJ. As long as Melvin is the GM we can probably expect more of the same. I also agree with TLB. Can the Brewers please get creative with a new manager next season? And I'm not talking about simply replacing Macha. I want to see someone perhaps from the minors, with no MLB "track record" (aka: manages just like every other dolt; doesn't 'trust' young players, whatever that is even supposed to mean; etc.). Show us some initiative here, Brewers. Give me someone who understands sample sizes... someone who can recognize good talent, good performance & not just gritty battlers (which I'm almost positive directly translates to 'out makers')... someone who isn't predisposed to playing veterans... someone who understands that the media will ask you annoying questions, and that dealing with that actually is part of your job... someone who understands that being a 'tough guy' & yelling at players doesn't make them play better... someone who's just, well, different from every other vanilla manager.
  3. Their purpose is to get fired when the GM puts together a bad team. I am not trying to say that any guy off the street could do their job. I just think the difference between the best and worst coaches is so small it really doesn't matter. We are talking about MLB players, not players still learning the game. I also believe that coaches probably had a much bigger impact a decade(probably more) ago before video of every single PA was readily available and easy to access. Managers can make a huge difference. The really sad thing is that most are so stuck doing things "by the book" that they all end up being pretty similar and making little difference.
  4. I have no problem with people saying that Hardy's peak value was after 2008. I have a huge problem with people saying Hardy should have been traded. We don't know what Melvin was offered if anything. You make a decision on how much you think a player is worth and if you don't get what you think is fair value, you hang onto the guy. Of course we would have gotten more for Hardy last offseason even if Hardy would have had a good year this year. Escobar was and still is far from a sure thing. Hardy was and still is a pretty safe bet to be a solid MLB SS.
  5. I think you are way overvaluing the impact of coaches and managers.
  6. Kind of funny to hear Rock and BA so on board with the pitcher batting 8th.
  7. The service time Escobar gets this year are not likely to matter much. He already had a month from last year.
  8. I know a lot of people here aren't big fans of base stealing, but this is a good point. Escobar's wOBA (sort of like a weighted OPS, but takes base stealing into consideration) the past two seasons have been higher than Hardy's career, even though Hardy's OPS has been better wOBA is a better way to measure offense than OPS. His stats are still in the minors even though they are higher than Hardy's. Escobar has been ver good at stealing last year and this year. Before that he got caught so much he actually hurt the team on the bases.
  9. I don't remember if it was TLB or myself that brought it up first, but I can see why Billy Beene had problems with Macha.
  10. he's a superior athlete that can impact the game with his speed. Only if he gets on base.
  11. I think Hardy played to much this year. I think Macha plays most of his starters to much.
  12. Just goes to show that you have to be careful which job you take as a MLB coach/manager.? You are the fall guy.
  13. Optional Waivers Optional major league waivers are required when optioning a player who has options remaining but who is more than three calendar years removed from his first appearance on a Major League roster. Because optional waivers are revocable, players usually clear in this scenario Link I am pretty sure Hardy would have had to clear waivers to go down.
  14. I am not trying to toot my own horn but I wasn't the only one skeptical of Parra suddenly becoming a #2 or even a solid #3 type pitcher for 175+ innings. It really isn't about Parra becoming a #2 or #3. If he had just repeated his performance from 2008 or even been close to it we would be much better off. His ERA was 4.39 in 2008. Expecting him to have an ERA in the 4.5 range was reasonable. If anybody had told me that Suppan and Looper would out-pitch Parra and Bush, I would have said we were screwed.
  15. I am still surprised anybody thought Kendall would play less this year. Macha started Kendall a ton of games when they were both in Oakland. He even stated before the season that he would be starting him almost every day during the stretch run.
  16. I apologize that some of us can't go to more than a game or two a year.
  17. If we had a backup who was definitely better, I say sit him. However, Rivera isn't exactly good either.
  18. The Cubs were significantly better than us to begin with. They would have had to lose their top 3 starters for half the season and we would have had to be relatively injury free to pull even with them. Exactly. None of the Brewers "core" players got hurt this year. Three fifths of the players we really needed to stay health and perform didn't. I would argue that losing Bush for 2 months would be almost as bad as losing either Braun or Fielder. Offense is always easier to replace than pitching. Yes, Parra has underperformed, but that's part of the problem with this team -- they were relying on somebody as unreliable and untested as Parra as the second best starter on the staff. There was little reason to think Parra would put up an ERA worse than 4.25-4.5 this year. The was almost no reason to expect Parra to have an ERA north of 6. Our whole starting rotation has pitched worse than expected except for Yo. There was almost no reason to expect that either. If Parra pitches like expected and Bush doesn't get hurt, we are a mid 80's win team. Edit: Nevermind about Suppan and Looper. They are performing within what should be expected. On the bad end, but not unexpectedly bad.
  19. As you alluded to, arguably our five top hitters and position players entering the season (Fielder, Braun, Cameron, Hardy, and Hart) and two top projected pitchers (Gallardo and Parra) have stayed healthy all year. Hart is hurt and expected to miss a month. So really, there was one significant injury (Weeks) and one significant underperformance (Hardy). Other than that, if you think Bush and Suppan missing time is a "worst case scenario," I think nothing could be further from the truth. Seems right in line with what other teams have to deal with in any given year, although in the Brewers case it was enough to send them down the tubes because they just aren't very good. Parra has underperformed even very pessimistic projections. I would count Parra as a significat underperformance. The drop off from Parra and Bush to our 6th starter is huge. Who said anything about Suppan being hurt putting a big dent in our team? I said "almost worst case scenario," meaning things could be worse. Bush being hurt and Parra really pitching poorly hurt more than almost any other possible injury. Probably several wins at least. Weeks injury sucks but probably only hurt us a little bit. Hardy, same thing. Our offense is almost as good as last year.
  20. I can give credit to anybody who predicted we would be around .500 because of injuries. Other than that I would say that some people underestimated the Brewers talent. That was the problem with this team coming into the season -- even a few injuries/underproducers was going to be enough to derail them because of their lack of depth, weak rotation, and of course, already having to deal with Jason Kendall as an everyday black hole in the lineup Of course every team has injuries and players under performing. We still have had almost the worst case scenario for injuries and under performing players this year. The only thing worse would have been something happening to Fielder, Gallardo, or Braun. It is more than just a few injuries and players under performing.
  21. You are still ignoring defense. Our lineup isn't the problem. Our pitching is the problem and adding a poor defender isn't going to help the pitching. In fact adding a poor defender to a pitching staff that doesn't strike out a lot of guys is even worse. Edit: Dewan's plus/minus has Dye as the worst RF from 2006-2008. He was tied at -17 with Francoeur, Either, and Griffey in 2008. The only worse in RF were Hawpe and Abreu.
  22. In many cases once a player reaches FA in MLB, they are going to be into their declining years by the end of their first FA contract. Outside of a few special players, you don't really want to retain them for to long.
  23. Just because we don't have a bad fielder doesn't mean we should add one.
  24. I would like it if you would quit ignoring defense.
  25. The Lions aren't any better off in the NFL than the Pirates in MLB. I might even go so far as to say that the Pirates have a better chance in MLB than the Lions in the NFL. They have control over their internal players and cost control for those players for a much longer time. Drafted players in the NFL get a lot of money up front and reach FA much faster than MLB players.
