  1. I agree with this. Even though he was a complete jerk his talent was so great that I didn't like having to trade him.
  2. What do you want Doug to do here? Too many people think you can just pick up the phone and land a Halladay or Peavy. It just doesn't work that way. If he wanted Kazmir he would have had to give up Escobar and/or Gamel. Do you really want that? I think those who are calling for Doug's head are a little unrealistic in their expectations.
  3. Gamel Offense - Gamel Defense > Hall Offense + Hall Defense I don't really see McGehee as anything more than a utility guy so I say give the job to Gamel everyday. Hall can pinch hit against LHP and be a late inning defensive replacement.
  4. Yeah the shirts are ugly but this is America and people have the right to wear (or sell) ugly shirts if they want to. No big deal to me.
  5. This is no surprise. The Padres are looking for anything that will help ticket sales. Trading for Gwynn and sending him to AAA would make no sense to me. I don't think the Pads are all that concerned about whether Gwynn is of major league caliber. It's about the revenue that he will help generate. I kinda feel bad for Gwynn he has almost no chance of living up to the hype in SD.
  6. I am very frustrated by this situation. i wasn't able to watch that draft prep show with Jack Z. last summer and got no help from DirecTV when I emailed them. I will stick with DirecTV because getting screwerd by them is less painful then getting screwed by Charter. But either way you end up eith a sore rectum.
  7. Thats exactly what I was thinking as I was reading the article. Hey, Braun has anted up. I don't see Corey's money in the pot yet. Let's reward loyalty.
  8. All you hear from the national media when they discuss Cardinal fans is what great fans they are and how knowledgeable about the game they are. This may or may not be true. I don't now enough about Card fans to say one way or the other. However, it is clear to me that they also possess a complacency about their team and themselves which is in a class with Yankee fans and the Red Sox Nation.
  9. The solution here is quite simple. Since Escobar's major value is at SS and moving him makes keeping him not as important and JJ understandably won't move here's what you do. You either sign Hardy long term during the 09 season or trade him next winter. If you do sign him than you trade Escobar. Either way one of them should be gone by Opening Day in 2010. I would prefer to keep Hardy because I like his bat but clearly one of them must go.
  10. Has Macha completely lost his mind? This thread makes me long for the days of Ned Yost.
  11. I feel that some people are overeacting here. Who cares what he feels in his heart? Does anybody know for sure what Powell felt in his heart when the Braves were in town? Did his being a Brewer prevent the Braves from hiring him? No. So either he wasn't a Brewer fan or it doesn't matter. This guy is a professional announcer. As long as he knows baseball, and doesn't sound like Gilbert Gottfried, give him a break.
  12. If they hire the Chicago dude I'm sure he will be professional enough to hide his allegiance while on the air. He may even change allegiance if working in Milwaukee. I hope they give Uke some say in who gets hired. The most important thing is that they work well togeher. One thing I will say about Uke is that he seems to make his partners better announcers so that should help no matter which way they go.
  13. I couldn't agree more. I disagree with JBriggs when he mentions Lepay. I love Matt Lepay but like AJAY said we need someone who lives and dies with the Brewers. We need someone who knows baseball the way Poweel does. I don't want someone else doing the hot stove show (or spring training games for that matter) because Lepay is in Ann Arbor doing a Badger game. And I certainly don't want Lepay to leave the UW. He's that good at what he does. We need someone who can devote himself solely to the Brewers and not spread himself so thin that the listeners get less than what they deserve.
  14. Yeah I'll take another Bobby Grich anyday. Great hitter. I agree with Melvin that trading Rickie is a risky proposition at this point. That's the kind of trade that could ruion a GM's career. I expect Rickie to break out this year and having Randolph aboard should help his glove work.
  15. Yes. Tommy Harper was a god to a little ten year old from Madison. I think a lot of the younger fans don't understand what Bud went through to bring baseball back to Milwaukee but we all owe him a great debt of gratitude. If it weren't for him there would not be Major League Baseball in Milwaukee.
  16. I started following baseball in 1968. That was the year of Denny McClain's 30 wins. At that time I was a Twin and Cub fan because the Twins were on TV here in Madison on Saturday afternoon and the Cubs were televised on Sunday afternoons. Both those teams were pretty good back then. The Twins had Killebrew, Oliva and Carew while the Cubs had Ernie Banks, Billy Williams and Ron Santo. Yes it broke my heart when the Cubs blew it in 69. I remember the winter and sping of 1970 when the rumors of a move from Seattle for the Pilots began to take hold. I would read the sports pages every day to keep updated. When the move became final I immediately dropprd the Cubs and Twins and haven't looked back since.
  17. Henderson, Rice, Morris
  18. I believe the most important part of the job - particualrly with a young team like Milwaukee - is managing the players and stroking their egos when needed and kicking butt when needed. Most important here is knowing when to do which with which players. The ability to do this will affect the outcome of a lot more games then deciding whether to bunt or not after a leadoff walk or deciding whether Parra can go another inning with a 2- 0 lead.
  19. I agree with Melvin that we need an experienced manager. My pick would be Johnson. I feel we need someone who has post season experience. Not just to help us should we get there but someone who has managaed a team through the day to day stress of a pennant race. This, in my opinion was ultimately Ned's downfall. His teams continually failed in pressure situations. We need someone who can guide this team through the obstacles that seemed to crush The Yost teams. Having said that my first pick would be Johnson. I have little faith in Brenly, Showalter, Little or Macha. If for some reason Leyland should leave Detroit he would jump to the top of my list
  20. This thread is not about the wisdom of the decisions he has made it's about the wisdom of his making these types of decisions at all. Good baseball decisions are almost always made by baseball people, not owners.
  21. I would have to say 3rd base and catcher. Let's giver Rivera a shot. Kendall played well defensively but it was like having two pitchers at the bottom of the order. I am not ready to give up on Weeks and Hart.
  22. That's not entirely true. The Yankees didn't always lead the league in payroll. The Yankees always leading the league in payroll came after the Yankees failed to win World Series. One example isn't really a discussion point. All people make bad decisions. My original point wasn't whether or not Steinbreneer was good for the Yankees it was about baseball people being alllowed to make baseball decisions. If Mark A feels he should make these decisions then let's just do away with the GM position like Jones did in Dallas (actually hias son is now the GM). Again maybe I'm overeacting (I sure hope I am) but I don't like the way this smells.
  23. According to an article by Vic Feuerherd in today's Wisconsin State Journal Link Feuerherd seems to feel that Doug Melvin should leave the Brewers because Mark A undermined his authority by firing Ned Yost. Is Mark A going to become one of those meddling Steinbrenner-like owners who is going to make baseball related decisions for his team? Don't get me wrong, he has every right to do that if he wants but is that the direction we want to go in? I feel he should of left the decision to fire Yost completely up to Melvin. If he didn't like DM's decision to stick with Yost until the off season then he should have fired Melvin. But not Yost. If a chain of command is going to work it has to work both ways. Say the new manager doesn't like a move Melvin makes. What's to stop him from going over his head to Mark A. if he knows Mark A was unhappy with the way Melvin handled the Yost situation? Now Melvin looks like an idiot in the eyes of baseball people because Yost was fired while his team was in a pennant race. Now I come on this board and see a thread about Attanasio pursuing Miolitor for a job in the organization. Whether you liked Ned or not the decision to fire him is looking more and more like a bad omen for the future of this franchise if Mark A is gonna start calling the shots on the baseball side as well as the business side. This is a major concern if he is starting to think he knows more about running a baseball team than Melvin does. It's beginning to smell a little Jerry Jones like to me. It's not unlike the situation which developed between Jones and Jimmy Johnson in the 90s. The team had a little success, Jones' ego went through the roof, he began to feel he was the major reason behind the teams success and Johnson was gone. The Cowboys were done winning a few years later.Maybe I'm overeacting here but this is making me very nervous. While I still appreciate all Mark A. has done for the team and the city his recent moves are not very encouraging, IMO. I believe strongly that good baseball decisions are made by baseball people not owners.
  24. I would go: Yo CC Bush TBD (between Yo and Soup) CC A bigger concern for me is the bullpen. I would save McClung for the point in the game when things get rough rather than starting him. I have no idea what Sveum plans to do for a closer. Right now Torres is not the man I would use. At this point I would much rather use Mota or Gagne. At least they have been pitching better lately while Torres hasn't..
  25. If the guy was good enough to make it to the majors he would have made it already regeardless of the steroids. ML talent is hard enough to find I doubt if organizations are "sitting on" legitimate major league prospects. Reilly is, and always has been, an idiot.
