  6. Huntsville Site game Summary Katin Wins it With Walk Off Homer Brendan Katin?s walk off home run with two outs in the 14th inning lifted Huntsville past Mississippi 4-3 Friday night in the opener of the final home series of the season at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars won their fourth straight game, in their longest contest of the year, improved to 35-25 in the second half and lengthened their lead to a game and a half in the North Division over Tennessee, which gave up four runs in the eighth inning at Jacksonville and fell to the Suns 7-6. Braves? catcher Ray Serrano pitched a scoreless 13th inning and retired the first two hitters in the 14th before Katin blasted a 2-1 offering over the wall in left-center field toward the scoreboard for his third home run of the week and his second game-winner since joining the team. Backup catcher Jon Williams worked out of a one out, bases loaded jam in the 11th inning and tossed a scoreless 12th before switching positions with Serrano. The Braves scored a run in the fourth and two in the seventh on a two-out, two-run single by Matt Young to take a 3-0 lead. Huntsville scored its? first run of the night in the home seventh on a single by Lou Palmisano that plated Jeff Eure, who had doubled. The Stars tied the game in the eighth on a bases loaded single by Ron Acuna and a double play ball off the bat of Palmisano with the sacks full. David Watkins worked out of a one out, runners at first and third situation in the ninth by retiring Ryan Braun on a line drive to shallow left field and Katin on a ground ball to shortstop Mike Rozema. The Huntsville bullpen trio of Joe Valentine, Luther Hackman and Matt Yeatman retired the last 15 hitters they faced and, along with Gerrit Simpson, worked seven scoreless frames behind starter Corey Thurman. The five hurlers combined to strikeout a season-best 15 batters while issuing only one walk. The series continues Saturday night with southpaw Steve Hammond taking the hill for Huntsville against a Braves? starter yet to be determined. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. pogo comment: Brendan Katin might not be hitting for average in his limited sample, but his power has definitely moved up with him.
  7. not as much to say as last night--- Mat Gamel Gamel's homer was decently hit..maybe 375.. He's got good power---not as much as braun, but i think he'll hit 25 at least once sometime in his career...hopefully in the majors. I got to see Gamel on D a little tonight as well. His arm is good, but his footwork and glove are a little more rocky. There was a ball hit to him early in the game that was ruled a hit. Gamel charged the ball and bobbled the pickup and the transition, so he didn't even throw it. So, take that into consideration along with the error tonight. From what we here, he has improved on defense, and i trust that info, but i don't think his glove is as good as Braun's yet. He's young though, so he's got plenty of time to improve. Darren Ford Ford's two rbi single early in the game might not have been a hit if the infield had not been playing in. Also worth noting that Ford's arm isn't that great---where Lorenzo Cain has a plus arm, i would say Ford is avg/below avg. Michael Bell Bell's Homer tonight was a cheap shot---maybe 335 feet to the left field corner, but he hit it a mile in the air. He proved he's pretty speedy on the triple because most would have probably stopped at 3rd. Definitely above average speed--and all the "gritiness" that normally goes with middle infielders. Too bad he didn't get much of a chance to impress on defense tonight...I think he could do well as a middle infielder or a utility guy---his power is legit. a few more notes: Ryan Barba might not hit much, but he runs well and he's slick on defense. Tony Festa also looked good on D, as he turned a diving stop at first into a double play. Kevin Roberts seems to have dialed it up a bit since moving to the pen--he hit 93, even though his motion makes it look like he's short arming the ball like a middle infielder. Nestor Corredor's homer was a bomb. He may be an organizational soldier, but he's definitely a good guy to have around. i can see him making it to AAA at some point. That's it for now...let me know if i missed anything!
  8. move to carolina, yay!!! wv update coming up
  9. an infielder might adbvance quickly to AA or AAA, but they wont be cracking the 25 man for the next 5 years unless they are future supestars...that's why no one too concerned...i think hernan/alcides and mike bell/ryan crew are pretty good prospects...add in corner guys like Mat Gamel and maybe's like holmberg, and i think the brewers are pretty stacked in the A ball range..
  10. I think the Brewers are doing well in the middle infield...if i was gonna pick one thing to focus on in the next draft or two, would be power guys...we've got a bunch of decent average ok power guys, but only a handful who could possibly hit 30 homers at any level...and none who will do it this year...i'd like to see the brewers try for some sluggers.. nonetheless, this is a wellrounded farm system, and i love the fact that the brewers just take the best played available everytime
  11. Final: Nashville 4, Memphis (Cards) 2, in 12 Innings Nashville Site Game Summary link, featuring a pic of Justin Lehr then text: www.nashvillesounds.com/news/news.asp?newsId=2125 Sounds Edge Redbirds In 12 Innings, 4-2 MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? The Nashville Sounds scored three runs in the top of the twelfth inning and held on to defeat the division-rival Memphis Redbirds by a 4-2 count on Thursday evening at AutoZone Park. With its fourth straight victory, Nashville (73-60) maintained its four-game cushion over Iowa in the American Conference Northern Division. The Cubs stayed hot, winning their sixth straight game with a defeat of New Orleans earlier Thursday evening. The Sounds, who notched their 13th last at-bat victory of the season, have won nine of their last 11 contests overall and eight in a row against the cross-state rival Redbirds. The extra-inning contest was the 13th of the year for Nashville. The Sounds are 5-8 in such contests. Vinny Rottino led off the top of the 12th with a double to right off Memphis reliever Matt Perisho. Andrew Beattie drew a walk then both runners moved up a base when Drew Anderson reached on a sacrifice bunt, loading the bases. Chad Moeller lifted a sacrifice fly to right to plate Rottino with the go-ahead run. Pinch-hitter Kennard Bibbs and Tony Gwynn each added an RBI single later in the frame to push the lead to three runs. Mitch Stetter took over on the mound for Nashville in the bottom of the inning and retired his lone batter before giving way to closer Alec Zumwalt, who was greeted by a John Nelson solo homer to right. The blast was the shortstop?s 20th of the year. After striking out Brian Martin, Hernandez singled to bring the potential tying run to the plate in the person of Brian Esposito, who flew out to the warning track in left to end the contest. Memphis jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a third-inning unearned run against Sounds starter Justin Lehr. With one out, Redbirds starter Chris Narveson reached second on a throwing error by shortstop Chris Barnwell. Reid Gorecki followed with an RBI single to right-center to put the home team on top. Nashville rallied to tie it in the top of the eighth. Anderson (2-for-4) led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by Moeller, moved to third on a Zach Sorensen flyout, and scored on a passed ball charged to Memphis catcher Michel Hernandez. Moeller, who reached safely after his bunt was mishandled by Redbirds relievers Andy Cavazos, attempted to give the Sounds the lead when Graham Koonce followed with a single but was thrown out at the plate by right fielder John Rodriguez on the play. Steve Bray (2-0) worked two scoreless frames to earn the win for the Sounds. Perisho (2-4) took the loss for the Redbirds after allowing three runs on three hits in his lone frame of work. Lehr turned in a solid start for Nashville, allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out seven batters during his no-decision. The quality start was the hurler?s seventh quality start in his last eight outings. The teams continue the series with another 7:10 p.m. meeting on Friday evening. Right-hander Ben Hendrickson (9-7, 2.73) will make the start for Nashville opposite Memphis right-hander Ricardo Rodriguez (2-2, 5.73). 12. Huntsville Site Game Summary Stars Survive Late Threat and Down Diamond Jaxx Joe Valentine extinguished a late rally by retiring all five hitters he faced and Steve Moss and Ryan Braun each knocked in two runs in Huntsville?s heart-stopping 6-5 win over West Tenn Thursday night in the final game of a five-game set at Pringles Park. The Stars rallied to take the last three games after dropping the first two to improve to 34-25 in the second half and and maintain their half-game lead over Tennessee in the North Division after the Smokies knocked off Carolina 6-2 at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC. The Stars earned their first series win in five tries against the Diamond Jaxx, who won 18 of the 25 games between the teams. Guilder Rodriguez led off the seventh inning with a single and stayed at first base when pinch-hitter Travis Ezi struck out against starter JR Mathes, who was then taken out of the game and replaced by Lincoln Holdzkom, making his second appearance of the series. Steve Moss greeted Holdzkom with a double to center field that chased home Rodriguez to tie the game at four. Callix Crabbe singled to move Moss to third base and the Stars? center fielder came in to score when Ryan Braun came through with a base hit to give the visitors a 5-4 lead. Thomas Atlee took over in the eighth for West Tenn and gave up consecutive one-out singles to Lou Palmisano, Rodriguez and pinch-hitter Carlos Lee to load the bases. Moss flied out deep enough to right field to allow Palmisano to score to push the lead to 6-4. Travis Phelps opened the bottom of the eighth on the hill for Huntsville and was taken out of the game after giving up a single to Richard Lewis and walking Jake Fox and Scott Moore to load the bases with one out. Joe Valentine got Brandon Sing to fly out to center field, deep enough for Lewis to score to trim the lead to 6-5. The Huntsville right-hander retired Tony Richie on a ground ball to end the eighth, struck out Albenis Machado to open the ninth before getting Carlos Rojas and pinch-hitter Miguel Negron to fly out to end the game. Valentine earned his eighth save in 11 chances and his second of the series. Trailing 3-1, Chris Walker doubled to lead off the sixth inning and scored one out later after stealing third base and advancing on an errant throw into left field by Palmisano, the catcher. Jake Fox doubled into left field to chase Parra, who lasted 5 1/3 innings in his longest outing in five turns with the Stars. Luther Hackman, who tossed four scoreless frames in relief on Tuesday, threw a strike to Scott Moore, who then blasted the next pitch over the wall in right-center field for a two-run home run to give the Diamond Jaxx a 4-3 lead. It was his 21st home run of the year, fifth against the Stars and the first run allowed by the Huntsville bullpen in the series over 11 2/3 innings. Hackman set down the next two hitters and picked up his second win of the series and third in five outings since joining the team. The Stars return home to begin their final series of the year at Joe Davis Stadium Friday night against Mississippi with right-hander Corey Thurman taking the hill against Braves? right-hander Sean White. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

  14. he didn't do anything great or stupid, so no nothing new from tonight...sadly, with D you need to see a guy get a bunch of opportunities before you can really make a judgement or statement about it..
  15. ok, i'm just gonna review the guys that really did something tonight: Lorenzo Cain Lorenzo smoked a single in his first ab. In the second at bat, he got hit in the leg, and was ready to charge the mound, but he was escorted to first. Of course, he was still furious, and so it seemed that his immediate stealing of 2nd, and then third, were both done on pure intensity. Lorenzo runs very well--he's nearly as fast as Darren Ford, who is incredibly fast. Anyway, Lorenzo may have misplayed one ball in the outfield, which unfortunately led to the winning run scoring, but he has a cannon for an arm. He threw that guy out at second from the corner by the wall, and it was a laser beam. Lorenzo is quite an athlete, and every time i see him I'm more convinced that he's going to be a very good major leaguer. Oh, i should say that the error Lorenzo reached on should have probably been ruled a hit---the 3b never really came up with the ball, but it was a tough play, and as mentioned, Cain is fast. Darren Ford Darren is probably the most improved player on the roster versus what I saw earlier in the season. His Home run was a line drive that probably traveled 380 feet...if he had a little more loft in his swing, he could probably hit quite a few more home runs...i think he may even hot 15 in a season sometime. He's a very solid defender, and with his speed he can cover a huge amount of ground. On his walk in the 8th? you could tell he was really watching the pitches closely....took 5 straight pitches to get the count full, then fouled one or two off, then walked...I'm impressed. Mike Bell Bell Dh'd tonight, so i didn't get to check out his D, but his power is legit. His homer was a no-doubter...probably over 400 feet. I would assume that if he can stick in the middle infield he will rise pretty quickly...Of course the fact that Ryan Barba is playing the field over him is not a good sign. Mat Gamel Mat got on base tonight and continues to impress. This is an interesting team without any true power guys---its fun to watch them work the count and steal bases...really an exciting group. Most exciting of all was Mat's near game tying out in the 9th. Don't know if anyone was listening to the game, but Gamel's flyout was gone...Greg burns, Greensboro's CF robbed him...the ball was probably a foot over the wall. Mat was in disbelief. He walked back to the dugout slowly and stopped twice to watch the replay on the scoreboard...it was a great play, but cool to see Mat crush it like that. A few more notes: Shawn Ferguson throws in the 89-91 ranges, and as the box score can attest, was pretty wild. Actually, upon looking at the box score, he was extremely wild... that pretty much covers it. Ryan Marion is a local guy, so he got nice applause coming in and coming out, but he didnt show great stuff and his control was pretty off as well. Dane Renkert looked solid, but his fastball was also only hitting 91, which seemed a little slower than early in the year---perhaps they've adjusted their gun in Greensboro. Kenny Holmberg is a very good hitter and he shows an almost uncontrollable amount of intensity. kenny looked ready to punch the entire Grasshoppers lineup throughout the game. Michael Brantley predictably walked, but once again proved that he has no power at all...he just doesn't hit the ball hard, and really has to be in Cf to have a chance at making it...unfortunately, I think Cain and Ford are probably both ahead of him defensively. I suspect he will repeat at low-A next year, opening a spot in the Brevard outfield for Cole Gillespie I'll have more details tomorrow night...if you've got any specific questions from tonights game, or anything you want to know for tomorrow, feel free to message me or post it in here or tomorrows link report...
  16. i'll assume that krynzel has as well...
  17. Cain WILL be top ten, we just might have to wait until next year... he's everything that steve moss isn't
  18. very agreeable list...i guess my ony complaint at this point is that brendan katin should be higher...he dominated Brevard and made it to AA his first full season...he's on pace to hit AAA mid year next year if he continues to hit...he's a top 20 prospect..
  19. In Progress: AZL Padres 6, AZL Brewers 3, through 6 innings Jeffress shows no control what so ever allowing 5 walks and 4 hits in 2 innings...
  20. Final: Huntsville 4, West Tenn (Cubs) 0 Huntsville Site Game Review: link, then text www.huntsvillestars.com/news/news.asp?newsId=980 Stars Stay in First With Shutout Victory Tim Dillard took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and tossed seven scoreless frames to pitch Huntsville past West Tenn 4-0 Wednesday night in a game filled with controversy and a rare stoppage in play at Pringles Park in Jackson. The Stars won their second straight in the series to improve to 33-25 in the second half and maintain their half-game lead over Tennessee in the North Division after the Smokies came from behind to down Carolina 6-4 to end a five-game losing streak. Brad Nelson opened the sixth inning with a walk, stole second base and stayed there, as Jeff Eure and Brendan Katin were unable to advance him. Lou Palmisano walked to keep the inning going and Guilder Rodriguez followed with a double to center field to plate Nelson to make it 1-0 Huntsville and move Palmisano to third base. Rodriguez knocked in the first run of the game for a second time in the series and just his sixth of the season. Dillard took the hill in the bottom of the sixth and missed with his first pitch to pinch-hitter Albenis Machado when all four light standards lost power and went dark, delaying the game for 27 minutes. When play resumed, Dillard fanned Machado for the first out of the inning and then lost his bid for a no-hitter when Chris Walker followed with a single. Scott Moore singled with two outs but Dillard averted further trouble by retiring Jake Fox on a ground out to end the inning. Hugo Castellanos lasted six innings in a fill-in start for the Diamond Jaxx, allowing a run on three hits and six walks. He stranded a runner at second base in four of the first five innings before the Stars finally broke through and was replaced by Carlos Vasquez, who earned the save in West Tenn?s 1-0 win on Sunday. Callix Crabbe laid down a bunt single with one out in the seventh and then scored the second run of the night when he stole second base, moved to third on a wild pitch and came plateward when catcher Jake Fox threw wildly past a diving third baseman Scott Moore and shortstop Carlos Rojas into left field all on the same play. Crabbe reached base in all five at-bats with three singles, a double and a walk and stole three bases. Brendan Katin led off the eighth inning with a fly ball down the left field line that had home run distance but was originally ruled foul by the third base umpire. Huntsville skipper Don Money came out to argue and convinced the umpire to check with the home plate umpire, who then reversed the call and awarded Katin his second long ball in as many days. West Tenn manager Pat Listach came out to argue and was tossed from the game. Crabbe delivered a two-out single in the frame that plated Rodriguez with the final run of the night. Travis Phelps tossed a scoreless eighth inning and has now gone 14 straight scoreless frames and Gerrit Simpson worked around two singles in the ninth to preserve the Stars ninth shutout of the season. Dillard allowed three hits and struck out seven to become the Stars first 10-game winner, and sixth in the league, and claimed his fourth straight positive decision. The series wraps up on Thursday night with southpaw Manny Parra taking the hill for Huntsville against West Tenn left-hander JR Mathes. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Huntsville Box Score and Game Log Tim Dillard with 7 stellar innings. 22. Final: Nashville 5, Memphis (Cards) 0 Nashville Site Game Review link (featuring a pic of Dana Eveland), then text: www.nashvillesounds.com/news/news.asp?newsId=2124 First-Place Sounds Shut Out Redbirds, 5-0 MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? Dana Eveland worked seven scoreless innings and the Nashville offense produced four seventh-inning runs to lead the Sounds to a 5-0 victory over the division-rival Memphis Redbirds on Wednesday evening at AutoZone Park in the opener of a four-game series. With the victory, Nashville (72-60) maintained its four-game cushion over Iowa in the American Conference Northern Division. The Sounds have won eight of their last 10 contests overall and eight in a row against the cross-state rival Redbirds. The shutout was the Sounds? 12th of the year, tying Round Rock for the PCL lead. Eveland (5-4) was dominant in earning his second straight victory by working seven innings of scoreless, three-hit ball, his fifth quality start in his last seven outings. The left-hander did not allow a Memphis runner to advance past first during the first six innings of action and permitted only one Redbird to reach scoring position all evening. Eveland retired eight consecutive batters at one point from the fourth through the sixth frames. Chris Demaria relieved Eveland in the eighth and worked the final two innings to complete the shutout. Nashville catcher Vinny Rottino continued his red-hot hitting with a 3-for-4 evening that included a double. He is batting an outstanding .383 (51-for-133) over his last 38 games, hitting safely in 30 of them. Redbirds left fielder Mike Rose thwarted an early Nashville scoring attempt when he threw out Kennard Bibbs at the plate to end the top of the second inning as the outfielder attempted to score from second on a two-out Tony Gwynn single. Nashville finally broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning, plating four runs while batting around against a pair of Memphis pitchers. Andrew Beattie opened the frame with a walk and moved to third when Vinny Rottino followed with a bloop single to right coupled with a throwing error by Redbirds second baseman Bo Hart, which put runners at second and third with no outs. After Matt Perisho relieved starter Dennis Tankersley, Jermaine Clark greeted the southpaw with a two-run double down the right field line that gave the Sounds a 2-0 lead. Clark?s two-bagger extended the infielder?s hitting streak to five games; he is batting .381 (16-for-42) in August. Nashville?s seventh-inning rally continued against Perisho as Kennard Bibbs walked and Eveland loaded the bases with a bunt single. Gwynn (2-for-4) followed with an RBI single to right to extend the lead to 3-0; the outfielder logged his team-leading 38th multiple-hit game of the year. Chris Barnwell produced the inning?s fourth run when his sacrifice fly to right brought in Bibbs from third. Brent Abernathy capped off the Sounds? scoring with a ninth-inning solo homer to left-center off Alan Benes, his fifth roundtripper of the year. Tankersley (4-14) suffered his Pacific Coast League-leading 14th loss of the season after allowing two runs on five hits over his six-plus innings of work for the Redbirds. The teams continue the series with another 7:10 p.m. meeting on Thursday evening. Right-hander Justin Lehr (4-6, 3.97) will man the bump for Nashville opposite Memphis southpaw Chris Narveson (7-4, 2.90). Nashville Box Score and Game Log Dana Eveland, still just 22 is enjoying a fantastic first year in AAA...it's too bad his 27 innings in Milwaukee killed everyones enthusiasm. Dana could still turn into a Middle of the rotation starter www.minorleaguebaseball.c..._mrbaaa_1
  23. not there tonight...sadly...stupid night class kept me busy until about an hour ago
  24. its a very different type of list than were used to... but i think some of it is perspective... when weeks, hardy, fielder, etc. were in the minors, the major league team sucked...so moe attention was paid to these guys... we've got a fairly similar amount of talent in the minors now...i mean, those first three guys are A prospects...yovanni is the best pitching prospect since sheets and braun has the best huntsville stats of anyone in recent memory.. The rest of the guys may be young, but theyre probably better prospects than guys like Brad Nelson and David Krynzel were---considering that those guys lasted like 4 years on potential or one good season... There may not be many power hitters down there as we'd like, but i don't think the farm system is notably weaker than it was before.. frankly, i like having guys that we know hit 90 on the gun than a hendrickson and housman.. its just a different list...
  25. Errecart is very exciting too...but we know a little more about Gillespie at the moment...its kind of a crapshoot with college guys in helena...we wont really know much about either until they play at a higher level.. both are exciting prospects though
