  1. Appearing 84% of your team's games when just getting called up to the majors for the first time certainly is. I think Invader sums up the debate perfectly.
  2. Well, seems like it's time to repost what I posted back on page 2, since many continue to ignore it.
  3. Does anyone remember why he was on DL in May? That may have a lot to do with the lack of power. His .286 avg/.379oba since coming off the DL adds evidence to an injury sapping his power. Maybe the same thing is going on with Gamel?
  4. That's a great article topper. Thanks for the link. I never found anything likable or admirable about George Steinbrenner. But I didn't know him. I'm sure many people loved him and I wish them well as they move through this time of loss.
  5. Since May 1st when Gonzalez had a .946 OPS, he has hit .247/.287/.442. Once again a Hot April fools the fools. Escobar missed the first 2 weeks of May. Since then he's hitting .286/.379/.331. He's making a little over $400K and coming up on his first arby year. Gonzalez is making $2.75 million with a one year deal plus a club option for 2011. Looks to me like a solid trade for the Blue Jays and a pointless trade for the Braves.
  6. Pretty much the same with movie stars. From my perspective it seems we want our entertainers and athletes to shut up and perform when we don't agree with them, and support their right to speak up when we do agree.
  7. It's also more likely you'll get a 5-6 player blockbuster type deal in the offseason. Fielder gets packaged with another player say, Salome, Gamel, McGehee, who the other team would have control over for several seasons. In return they trade a bat and a handful of pitching prospects. Or some multi-team deal is worked out during the Winter Meetings when it's easier for GM to talk to several teams at a time.
  8. Boycotting his team's games in AZ would be a detriment to his team and possibly a breach of his contract. The ASG is a voluntary spectacle celebrating all things baseball. People want to see MLB make a stand supporting its large Latino fan base and players. I don't have a problem with Yo or any player taking a stand on an issue. I certainly understand why he would feel this way and respect his opinion. Going forward it will be interesting to see how the law affects the D-Backs' or Az Cardinals' abilities to draft and sign Latino and Hispanic players.
  9. "I Am Woman" has invincible in it. "I am strong, I am invincible, I am Woman" Just sayin'.....
  10. Good point. There haven't been a lot of great deadline deals in recent years. Organizations realize young top prospects are their most valuable asset. I suspect LaPorta will be a fine major leaguer, and Brantley could have a major league career as a reserve. But a 1B with moderate power and a 4th OF'er isn't much in return for CC.
  11. What were the Brewers' odd to make the playoffs at the beginning of the season? With the exceptions of the big market Yankee/Red Sox types, most teams start the year with crappy odds. At baseball prospectus the first and second place teams in each division have pretty good odds and every other team has Brewerlike odds. So, the odds mean little. They have to get to 2nd place before any consideration of a playoff run can be taken seriously. I think they have a shot to do that by mid-August, but everything has to go really well!
  12. Because he's done so well coaching infield defense? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif GM don't usually get fired unless there's a ownership change or the team has a horrendous 100 loss type season. Macha's just on a one year deal, isn't he? They'll have to finish .500 or beyond to get the organization to renew his contract.
  13. Go Rangers! Kick the Yankees in the playoffs!
  14. All Star Break. This series against the Giants has ruined any hope. I've maintained there is no point in firing Macha, but now it's clear he has to go at the Break. That will give them an excuse to hang up the season and re-tool for 2011.
  15. This is the kind of series that gets a manager fired.
  16. One game shouldn't get a manager fired, but this homestand may be Macha's last hurrah. I didn't think he'd be fired during the season until last night. A poor homestand leading up the All Star game is a catalyst for firing the manager, and using that as justification to chuck the season and start planning for 2011.
  17. Agreed. Except for the 9 game losing streak in mid-May they've been a .500 team. Of course that's not uncommon for a lot of teams each year.
  18. Just play Counsell at ss a couple times a week, and let Escobar play out the season as the regular ss. It's the only way he'll improve.
  19. But isn't this true for Davis as well? He has always defied his peripherals. His career B/9ip is higher than Bush's this year. His career K:BB ratio is a measly 1.65, while Bush's is 2.64. Bush's career ERA is 4.65, Davis' 4.37. They are comparable pitchers with similar careers. The differences are Bush is 4 years younger and has had good results this year. I agree you can make the argument he's probably not as good as he's appeared when looking at predictive stats, but you could have made that argument about Davis at any time in his career.
  20. His first game was the 35th game of the season. His last appearance before being sent back down was the 92nd game of the season. Gamel appeared in 48 of those 57 games, starting in 29. During that same stretch, Casey McGehee appeared in 45 games, starting in 34. In those games Casey hit .336/.395/.557. In that same time Hall appeared in 37 games, starting in 22. Counsell appeared in 50 games, starting 43. Gamel had regular playing time.
  21. I doubt Cincy or the Padres make it to the playoffs. If I was a Texas or Minnesota fan I'd be very sceered. Both teams have played well but they each have a team breathing down their necks. Texas was hot (21-6) in June, but the Angels went 18-9. Twins were pretty cold at 12-15. I think the Tigers will make it a fight.
