  1. OK you've convinced me. I overstated Cleveland a bit, perhaps. It should be a very competitive division. I think Cleveland has as good a chance as the other 3 you mention.
  2. They are running the Baseball documentary every Tuesday for the next 9 weeks. So they are treating it like a weekly TV and building it as a lead in to Spring Training, I believe. Ken Burns was on Hot Stove league Monday. He has produced a "10th inning" which will air sometime this year as well. The new episode will pick up at the end of 1992 and go through to the 2008 World Series.
  3. Well both were injured for over 2 months each. I don't expect the old, great Hafner to ever show up again. Something along the 2007 Hafner should help a bit though. They may want to gift LaPorta a first baseman's glove in Spring Training though.
  4. They were 44-33 after CC left. That .577 winning pct would have easily won the division. They get Carmona back and stay healthy, they should win the division.
  5. Wow. A lot of people here don't like this guy much.
  6. I would definitely offer 2 years, especially if it was in the $5-6 million per year range. If he saves 30-35 games next year and is strictly mop up in 2010, it's still worth the $10-12 million.
  7. In the words of Earl Weaver, "you're role is to warm up when I tell you, and go pitch when I tell you."
  8. 13-9, 3.84ERA, 196 ip, 80BB,180K
  9. I've had it up on the computer since the 2nd. Thanks for posting this. It's pretty fun seeing all these players again. Man, they are skinny! Glenn Braggs hits a homer! 7-0!
  10. Weird. I have Comcast in the Chicago area and I get the channel. You'd think it would be standard across their entire platform, regardless of region. It's not. I have a friend in New England who can't get it in his suburb because Comcast "doesn't have enough bandwidth" to add channels. His buddy in an adjacent suburb gets it. All the more reason to switch to DirecTV or Dish.
  11. How do you figure that? Sabathia was incredible going to Milwaukee and a new league. I doubt he will pitch to a 1.65 ERA back in the AL.
  12. I agree. Frankly, I think it's debatable how much the Yankees have improved over 2008. There's not much difference between Mussina and CC's 2008 seasons; AJ and Pettitte's 2008 seasons were similar. Not sure if Teixeira/Swisher is a vast improvement over the 2008 version of Giambi/Abreu. They have 8 wins to make up compared to the Rays' 2008 record. Think they'll make it? Meanwhile Tampa Bay is young enough, they can hope for improvement. Adding Burrell should add a win or two.
  13. In 2006 he pitched 155 innings. In '07, 187 between AAA and the majors.
  14. If he wins 18 it means the Brewers offense is more consistent and productive than last year. If that were the case it would mean they will make the playoffs. At this point I'll guess 15-8, 190K's.
  15. Holy crap that is really CHEAP! Are the remaining free agents getting worried? This could indicate a rash of under market signings by Players the Yankees Don't Want. It's only two years so he must be banking on the economy turning around and salaries going back up.
  16. Interesting idea. I don't know the Rays players you mention very well. Seems to me the Brewers would be getting the worse end of the deal, if only slightly.
  17. Cameron had essentially the same season as Torii Hunter. The Brewers paid him $7 million. The Angels paid Hunter $16 million. Over the course of their contracts Cameron will be paid $17 million, Hunter $90 million. Just by this comparison, signing Cameron was a brilliant move.
  18. This from a recent Brewers mailbag on their website:
  19. Where's Claudio Vargas when you need him?
  20. I think it's pretty serious. I'd like to see them take a flyer or two out one of these schlubs looking for work that weren't offer arbitration. But I'd also like to see pick up some younger guy who can work into the rotation. Maybe he starts in AAA but can come up and be better than McClung in early summer. I don't expect them to sign one of the bigger name free agents, unless Sheets can be persuaded back.
  21. If McClung is really the 5th starter, then Cabrera could compete for that spot.
  22. The team is built around these guys: Prince, Weeks, Hardy, Braun, Hart, Gallardo, Parra. For the most part these players have been "untouchable" for other teams during the last several seasons. Only Hart will be 27 by Opening Day. These are the team's stars. That makes the Brewers core players among the youngest and most talented in baseball. The are still young enough that we can reasonably hope none have reached their peak. There are several older players on the team, but for the most part they are temporary and replaceable.
  23. I don't wish him ill. He has every right to sign the best deal for himself, no matter the parameters. That said, if he chose New York "in order to avoid the uncomfortable situation of being expected to deliver superhuman feats", he's fooling himself. CC, ya shoulda given Mussina a call before making your decision. He won more games in his 8 years as a Yankee than you have in your 8 major league seasons. And he's pitched way better in the post season than you have. But most Yankee fans think he's not a "winner" because he didn't win a ring.
  24. Braun and Fielder both had higher OPS' in the first half. Hardy's first half OPS was .827, Hart's .831. Factor in defense and I'd say Hardy was the most valuable player the first half of the year. Hardy was probably the MVP of the team in 2008. fwiw, Weeks' OPS in the 2nd half was .829
