  1. I'd like to see them go after Cabrera too. It's funny the Orioles cut him loose and are now looking at Tim Redding. What's the difference between the two?
  2. I think this is a ploy by the Red Sox to force action. I suspect John Henry met with Boras who told him either the Nats or Orioles made a ridiculous high offer. Henry told him, have fun in last place, and hopped the plane home. If the Yankees or Angels were outbidding them the Red Sox would counter offer. But if the Orioles or Nats sign him, it makes the Red Sox stronger. Instead they can go out and sign Burrell or Dunn at a fraction of the cost.
  3. Wonderful post Crew07. I agree with you; the best move is to try and pick up a young pitcher who can grow into the rotation with Parra and Gallardo. Then Doug should try and buy out a year or two of Bush's free agency. Add in Jeffress in 2010 and you have a talented young rotation. Remember, when Doug took over he pointed to the Twins as his model for rebuilding. Well, the Twins almost never do any moves of impact, the Matt Garza trade notwithstanding. Mostly they try to have a competitive team and hope for a lot of luck to make it to the playoffs. In the last 4 years they've won 83, 96, 79, and 88 games. They've fielded good teams the last several years, but never really a championship caliber team. Like the Twins the Brewers aren't in a position to plug weaknesses with big free agent signings every winter.
  4. So, it's Trot Nixon? Didn't he wash up ashore a couple years ago?
  5. I think they are still in 88-92 win potential as is. The difference in 2009 will be more teams competing for the Wild Card. It is best to set your sights for the division title in the offseason, then be content with the Wild Card at the end of the season. 90 wins might not be enough for the playoffs in 2009.
  6. Well, maybe Matt Le Croy can be the catcher in 2010.
  7. Eric Hinske. Can play the corners, is a lefty, and is from Menasha. According to this link he is unsigned: http://sports.espn.go.com...pe=ranked&season=2008

  11. I don't see Toronto dealing any pitching with McGowan out until at least May of next season and Marcum out for the year. I don't see them needing a RF either with Rios, Snider and Lind.Oops.; I didn't realize Marcum was out for the year. He's not on the DL. At any rate, I was thinking they'd be most interested in Escobar, not so much in Hart, unless they were adding a lefty OF like Lind in some kind of multi player deal.
  12. Hart, Escobar for Adam Lind and Dustin McGowan.
  13. I think we will see a trade that brings a young arm to the team to pair up with Gallrdo/Parra. Someone like Toronto, who has a few good young pitchers might be willing to deal for a certain hotshot ss prospect or right fielder.
  14. I started a trade Corey Hart topic several months ago because I think he is the logical trading chip for the team. There are options to replace him for a year or so. Lefties Kotsay and Hinske are available. From the right side there's Juan Rivera, Badelli, Wilkerson, Jerry Hairston. Trading Hart would almost certainly put Nelson or Iribarren on the team. Or both.
  15. A year of Vinnie and Rivera is fine with me. I expect they would outproduce the 2008 version of Kendall on offense.
  16. As Solomon Torres proved, most any good reliever is capable of preserving 9th inning leads 80-85% of the time. So if the Brewers enter every 9th inning in 2009 with the lead, I'm OK with putting out any old schmoe on the mound and suffering through a meltdown 15% of the time.
  17. He played with the York Revolution last season.
  18. They really aren't alike. Lopez didn't throw real hard, but pretty consistently threw strikes. He also had 2 years of real success, albeit mixed in with 3 pretty crappy seasons. Since he's always around the plate, and doesn't throw very hard, he can get hit pretty hard. He's coming back from TJ surgery. He's someone I'd give an NRI to for Spring Training. Cabrera is a big guy who throws hard and has no control. He walks a lot of batters and has games where he can't find the plate. Last year he had lost some velocity. At the beginning of the year it looked like the loss in velocity improved his control. At the Break he was 6-5, 4.33 ERA. After the break he returned to the same bad habits. Still, he's been durable the last three seasons, and would probably be OK as a 5th starter. With a new team he may improve from that.
  19. Hardy's last two seasons are reminiscent of Ripken/Trammell/Tejada. Escobar seems more like a Tony Fernandez/Renteria/Orlando Cabrera type at best. All these players are good ss, but if you have a ss who puts up Tejada or Ripken type numbers you don't mess with him until he gets too expensive.
  20. Crede is very good defensively and has a bit of power. But he's a righty, has crappy on base skills, and makes lots of outs; so he's just like every Brewer hitter. Plus he has a bad back. More of the same, if you ask me.
  21. His ERA the last 5 years has been 5.21, 4.28, 4.30, 5.01, 3.71. He's averaged over 200 innings and 33 starts each year. At some point I suppose his body will break down, then again, the way he throws he could keep this up until he's well in his 50's. I'd rather have him than Suppan. He could have 270 wins and 2500 K's after these two years......who thought he'd be a HOF candidate 15 years ago?
  22. There must be 20 CF'ers that fit between Cameron and Cabrera.
  23. I guess they could platoon Gathright and Kapler in CF. It might work OK, but it might not. Seems like it would be an acceptable platoon for a team expecting to win 79 games.
