  1. I think he has no value unless a team like the Orioles, desperate for a ss and considering offers for Brian Roberts, would be interested in taking a flyer. The Brewers would have to eat 6-70% of the contract, I guess. I suppose that' better than just releasing him outright. If he were in the Brewers farm system now instead of several years ago, he wouldn't even be considered a prospect and would be lucky to get that proverbial cup of coffee. I think the best thing to do is keep him, never let him bat against righties, and and showcase him as a guy who can play everywhere. Or at least 2nd-ss-3rd.
  2. I've heard the Cubs are close to getting Teahan. If I traded Hart I'd keep Cameron and play DeJesus in RF. I'm pretty sure KC doesn't think DeJesus is a top defensive CF'er.
  3. I agree. He needs to go to a bottom feeding team that is willing to hand back up catching duties to whoever has the best Spring. Going back a few years he would have been a better option than Keith Osik, Bennett, Bako, Moeller, et al. For these fringe guys, too much of it is about being with the right organization at the right time. Then when you get your break it's good to .450 for two weeks. That usually gets a couple more shots in the majors.
  4. I think other teams are hopeful they can get more bang for their buck by signing one of the other free agent starters. Let's say you already have a pretty good 3 or 4 rotation. So all you really need is to improve on the 4 or 5 hole. No doubt CC is a HOF caliber pitcher, but does Boston really need to pay him $140 million? They won 95 games last year and already have 4 pretty good starters, not counting Buchholz. How many more wins would CC bring over say, someone like Lowe or Garland or Burnett? The Red Sox are in a great position to take a risk with Sheets. They could end up with the same results as CC, while saving tens of millions of dollars. The Brewers wouldn't be making an offer at all if CC wasn't a Brewer last year. The only teams that should consider CC are those that are rich, playoff contenders, and have a gaping hole at the top of the rotation. That leaves the Dodgers and Yankees, and not too many other teams. I suspect the Angels could get involved as well.
  5. Hart for DeJesus. Royals said at the end of the season he's looking for more power from the corner OF.
  6. A couple years ago Jeff Cirillo was asked to name his least favorite teammates ever. Without pausing he said Scott Karl and iirc, Phil Nevin.
  7. Pedroia: 326/.376/.493Kinsler: .319/.375/.517 Just sayin'.... If you're going to give it to someone for the combination of defense and offense, then why not Joe Mauer, who had a wonderful season. I agree though, no real standout in the AL this year. Except ARod, who had MVP worthy numbers. Unfortunately they were merely average for him.
  8. Holy Crap is Salome really that good? His numbers were Matt Wieters like in AA!
  9. Iribarren seems to have some on base skills, he's a lefty, still fairly young though time is running out. He doesn't run and doesn't have power. Still, could he be the Brewers version of Mike Fontenot? Can he play 2B everyday if Rickie were traded? At least for a season, with a veteran backup? If so why did he play 100 games in the OF in AAA this season? As an OF'er he has almost no value, right? Vinnie was sent down to Nashville right before Opening Day told to prepare himself as the next Brewer starting catcher. How did that work out? He'll be 29 next April. He's always hit pretty well for a middle infielder. Last year as a catcher, his numbers went down noticeably. Still, if he hit 250-260 in the majors and maintained some of the obp, he'd make a nifty backup catcher. On the other hand, Rivera already is a nifty major league backup catcher. So, what's the story on these guys' future? What's to become of Hernan and Vinny?
  10. Whoa, spooky! Iribarren in Huntsville: .307/.363/.430 Escobar in Huntsville: .328/.363/.434 Of course there are differences, the biggest Escobar is 2-1/2 years younger and reportedly a great defensive player. But Iribarren is a lefty bat. Can he play 2B or is that just a myth? He played a lot of OF last year, which makes his MLB future almost non existent.
  11. I think most teams make money. Even the Pirates and Royals.
  12. Braun had a .942 OPS on September 2nd. He lost 54 points in the last 25 games. Prince topped out at .907 on August 13th. 3 Weeks later he had lost 70 points off his OPS, before climbing back up in the final two weeks of the season. Those seem like huge dropoffs that late in the season. Normally I'd put my money on the guy who draws the walks, but Braun is almost unprojectable to me at this point. Is he the quality corner OF'er who's going to hit 30 some hr's and bat .285 every year, or was this a sophomore slump triggered in part by injury? I have no idea what kind of hitter Braun will be at 27. I think he has the better chance of winning an MVP with one of those amazing seasons like we just saw with Berkman and Pujols. I think Prince will always hit kinda like he has already......280ish average, with an oba 100 points higher, and home run totals that vary year to year but always be among the league leaders. So I guess what I'm saying, Braun may be the more unprojectable hitter, but he seems to have the higher ceiling than Prince. Prince is David Ortiz. Braun is Vlad.
  13. How many were swinging strikes?
  14. Good point rydogg. It ain't Arod and Santana who are overpriced; they actually earn their salaries. It's the Suppan's and Gary Mathews' and Torii Hunter's of the baseball world that skew the payrolls.
  15. Corey Hart for a young lefty 3B and a high draft pick A ball pitcher.
  16. Me too. The main difference is hart was actually good in the minors. There was no precedent for Hall to hit 35 homers in a season. Hart still has value and can contribute to a team. If it wasn't for that contract, Hall would have entered that stage of signing one year deals, traveling from team to team.
  17. Lowe's ERA at Dodger stadium the last 4 years is 3.21. His road ERA must be a full run higher. Lowe is like Dave Bush at his best. Nothing to be ashamed of, but hardly Sheets' level.
  18. The selections aren't surprising, but La Russa and Coop probably did the best managing in the league.
  19. I don't know who else you give it to in the NL. They were probably the best in the league on paper at the the start of the season. They finished with the best record in the league. At least he didn't screw up anything. Sometimes that's all you need from a manager. Hard to argue with Maddon, although Gardenhire deserves a lot of credit. I suppose Ozzie does as well. The Blue Jays turned around once Cito became manager.
  20. I wouldn't say he's a top 5 player in the game, but he is still a good and valuable player.
  21. For being an old player in decline he sure had a fine year last year. Jack Z might covet Hart, so I'd trade Corey for Ichiro as long as the filthy rich Mariners sucked up half the salary. Which won't happen.... Still, Ichiro Weeks Braun Prince Hardy Branyan Cameron Kendall
  22. My biggest worry is Prince or Hardy are traded leaving gaping holes in the offense. My second biggest worry is no improvements are made to the lineup and we enter Opening Day with a lineup of stubborn free swinging nitwits, just like we saw in September. Call me crazy, but I'm not that worried about the pitching. Without Sheets or CC the Brewers will have trouble competing with the Cubs, but should stay in the running for the Wild Card.
  23. I think he's just a sunken cost for the team. They try and recoup most of the investment through his merchandising and whatever he gives them on the field and they ride out the contract.
  24. I hope the new manager uses the best pitcher available at the most crucial time in any given game. I also hope the Brewers enter every 9th inning leading by 5 or more runs. If both those things happen they won't have to waste $10 million on a relief pitcher.
  25. $17 million a year and he can't afford his own plane tickets home?
