  1. Seems like they could keep Cameron and sign Daniel Cabrera for lot less than Igawa. Cabrera's just as crappy, but he throws hard and might benefit from having a pitching coach who is also from the Dominican.
  2. Hopefully Iribarren can be the 25th man until June or July, when Gamel can be called up as the new 3B.
  3. I'd take a flyer on Britton. The Yankees never gave him a chance.
  4. Has Randy Wolf ever been any good? Wait, I see he was pretty good back in 2002. He's been injured a lot....
  5. Wiggington would be a good pickup. I'd consider Backe too. Daniel Cabrera, possibly the worst starting pitcher in baseball, may be non tendered. The guy used to throw 100 mph. Last year his velocity was down, presumably to help with his control. That worked for about 2 months, then he was back to walking batters. Still, could be a McClung type or possibly closer material.
  6. It's tempting, but he really didn't hit righties that well last year. They struck him out 23% of the time. I think bringing him back this year will look like a step backward which would draw considerable criticism. Maybe in a couple years, but not in 2009.
  7. I like it when contending teams make boneheaded moves.
  8. Good luck. This is a really thoughtful thing you are doing. I hope it works out and your wife's grandfather is not in pain.
  9. Just want to point out from the inception of free agency to the strike of 1994, MLB had greater parity than anytime in its history. Like blaming the UAW for the problems in Detroit, it's just not as simple as blaming the employees for an industry's problems. Baseball has always had the haves and have nots. And the haves have always included the New York Yankees. The Yankees were the richest team in the time of Babe Ruth, when DiMaggio roamed CF, when Mickey Mantle was boozing it up and womanizing by night and slamming home runs by day. The Yankees have always been able to buy players from poor teams, or offer them lopsided trades so the poor guys could stay in business. In fact about the only time the Yankees weren't able to do this was from the 80's to early 90's when free agency actually made it possible for teams to sign their homegrown stars to long term contracts and build consistent winners no matter the market size. It's the labor agreement of 1994 and arbitration that is as much responsible for the disparity today as it is free agency.
  10. You know when I think we "needed him most"? Before we had Sabathia, after we lost Gallardo. He came through huge, so huge that he was the NL starting pitcher in the All-Star game. Are people forgetting about that already? Without the season he gave us, we wouldn't have even been in position to make a deal for Sabathia, we would have been trade deadline sellers, not buyers.Wow, that's a great way to put it. I had to look it up. You know what Ben did before CC arrived? Check it out:17 starts, 10-2, 2.77 ERA Looks pretty close to what CC did when he arrived: 17 starts, 11-2, 1.65 ERA 15 of CC's starts over that time were QS, 11 of Ben's were through his first 17 starts.
  11. Actually that only happened once, 2008. So getting injured makes you a "choke artist" and "anti-clutch"?
  12. You are forgetting Jeff Bennett, who was pretty good for a back of the bullpen guy.
  13. Better than a K an inning. Looks like a guy worth taking a chance on.
  14. Little Kenny Rosenthal indicates Doug has screwed his head back on straight: http://msn.foxsports.com/...anks-trade-hits-roadblock
  15. Let's trade the entire team for players the Yankees no longer want.
  16. Cano has to hit .300 to have any value at all. I'm not sure he's a good defensively as Weeks.
  17. That would be good news! I guess it's important to remember Doug doesn't do deals in a vacuum. One move makes begets another.
  18. Does anyone else see the irony of the biggest market team outbidding the smallest market for CC, then the small market team paying the big market team to take CC's friends? This is hogwash. Melky Cabrera sucks. You heard it here first.
  19. Maybe it could be a Roger Clemens type deal where Randy only joins the team for West Coast road trips.
  20. Lowell might be a tad overpaid, but I'd welcome him on the Brewers. Good defensive player who hits righties OK.
  21. Maybe Sheets has made it clear to Melvin that he's ready to move on. Melvin doesn't want to say that out loud out of respect, so we get these veiled references to talking with Ben and wishing him well.
  22. The M's also included a pretty well regarded young pitcher in Chris Tillman, along with the useful George Sherrill. Tillman turns 21 in April and could be in Baltimore sometime in 2009. Moves like this made it pretty clear how Jack Z came about with his new job.
  23. I sure didn't. The Yankees freed up something like $90 million from their 2008 payroll. Nobody can compete with them for any player they target. It's really down to whether the player thinks he's up to playing in NYC. I think this is a Godsend for the Brewers. I love watching CC pitch but this would have been a horrible crippling contract for the team. Doug should offer Benny 3 yrs/$42 million today.
  24. Orioles are talking with Zaun and jerkface Michael Barrett as backups for Wieters. Freel works as a good platoon partner in LF with Luke Scott, and a fill in at 3rd when Mora disapears for his annual two week "I might be injured" stint. He's probbly insurance in case they trade Roberts or Mora.
