  1. According to wikipedia Torres is a devout Jehovah's Witness. Here's another tidbit from there: I heard a radio interview last week on a local station with him, recorded right after the first loss to the Cubs when he gave up the two runs to make it 6-4. I wish I had a transcript of the interview, he was just so impressive. The reporter noted as he was leaving the clubhouse he turned back to see Torres holding his young son, who was obviously distraught over the loss. Don't worry, he was telling his son, it's only one game; we lost, but now we move on. Tomorrow is another game. He should be the Team Guru. Here's what he told Adam McCalvy after the game:
  2. Salomon Torres. Have you ever heard any interviews with this guy? He's the most articulate, well grounded pro athlete I've ever heard. He gives thoughtful responses, often framed in sentences longer than 5 words, and is respectful to the reporters. He must be a great teammate, always deflecting credit to others and taking the blame when he falters.
  3. Agreed, but how does that happen? 31 runs against us and 0 today against the Pirates??!! All that running around the bases in Milwaukee wore them out?
  4. I don't think Hart should be benched. He has been OK since the All Star break; just had a bad series against the Cubs, but was fine before that. I think playing Rickie against the lefty is the right idea too. But Cameron has been bad since the All Star break. He was terrible at the plate in Chicago. Given the Kapler is coming off an excellent game maybe he deserves another start and Cam could use a day off. I think Kendall could use a lighter work load over the next few weeks too.
  5. TauPentaRei, the post of the week! Perhaps the month. Great job. :D
  6. I guess we dance with what brung us. No reason to start Gabe Kapler in CF, after all he only went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles yesterday and has a .954 OPS against lefties this year. No, let's trot out Cameron for another night of strikeouts and first pitch pop ups! Mike K'd 10 times in 21 at bats over the home stand, posting a Kendall-like .513 OPS. Sometimes it's good to give a guy a day off, ya know... Do you suppose Mike Rivera is happy to just be in the majors making good money and doesn't really mind never playing?
  7. I think Counsell should only play as a backup ss and a late inning defensive replacement at 2nd. I never want to see him at 3B again, so I don't hold any illusions about him. Looking at Kapler's prior body of work we see career rate stats of 272/331/423. Cameron's career stats now stand at 249/339/446. The difference isn't all that great. Given Cameron's oba and batting average are running 20 points lower this year than his career rates and his strikeout rate is higher than his career level, I think it's reasonable to suggest giving Kapler a few more starts in CF each week. Cameron is striking out about 30% of the time against righties, and Kapler is crushing lefties in the small sample sized 69 plate appearances. And of course it is inexcusable Bill Hall is back playing against righties. Branyan was given only 6 plate appearances over the homestand despite reaching base 3 of those PA's, including a home run. I appreciate the team has committed to a certain group of players, but it's the heart of the season. You have to understand your roster and use it to the best advantage each game.
  8. I think it's worth asking why low average hacks who routinely swing at ball 4 are rewarded with every starts?
  9. At least tonight I can drink without having my jag distracted by another Brewer loss.
  10. Well, Branyan and Rivera will be fresh for the bench tomorrow.
  11. Is it time to start playing for draft position yet?
  12. So if they bean Fielder it means Cameron could have a shot at striking out one more time during the homestand.
  13. If they don't make the playoffs we could see a significant clubhouse cleaning. There are too many free swinging low average hitters. That's an invitation to prolonged team wide batting slumps like what's happening now and happened the first 6 weeks of the season. The coaching staff also seems to be paralyzed and generally inert this season. Maddux could be the only one who survives. If they don't make the playoffs.
  14. goodnight everybody! Don't forget to tip your waitress!
  15. Well there was the game last Friday when he came in for Parra, gave up a hit and an walk, allowed 2 inherited runners to score and coughed up the lead. Kinda like what he did just now.
  16. I was worried they wouldn't make an error today. Whew, I can relax now.
  17. Soriano homers but the Cubs don't realize Ned has our secret weapon coming to bat in the 8th. Branyan will make it 6-2, just you wait and see. Of course that will be the final score...but still
  18. Yeah, because I want my home run leader trying to drop a bunt when the team is down by four runs and in need of a rally. Anderson: "Jason Kendall doesn't swing and miss very much." Um, BA, have you watched the team play this month? He has as many Ks this month as he had in May and June combined. I should have made my comment in blue.....
  19. Please let me enjoy my surly cynical attitude for the rest of the day.
  20. It wasn't Braunie's fault. Sometimes you just gotta tip your hat to the other team.....
  21. Cameron will get another chance to strike out and kill a rally!
  22. Fielder homers! Crowd yawns...???
  23. Requesting permission to use this as my tagline! I love it!
  24. Does it rain much in Atlanta in August? I really need a break....
