  1. I'd rather have Hall in Counsell's place for next year. He probably won't have much trade value with that contract, so that seems to be the best use for him. Oh now you're just cherry picking stats. You're only looking at what Cameron has done since August 1st.
  2. I don't get it either. Would you rather have a guy hit .299/.360/.400 over an entire season or a guy that hits .261/.350/.430 from June to August?Pretty much the entire team hit like crap for the first two months of the season. Few players hit the exact same average every week. (See Hardy, JJ). I wasn't cherry picking Rickie's stats as Mr. Snarky Poster suggested. I was pointing out that Rickie hasn't been hitting that bad for the last 13 weeks. That's a significant amount of time. I agree he has lots of room for improvement. And he hasn't gone on a big tear like Hardy that would make us forget his terrible Spring. But since June 1, he's been hitting like a historically average 2B:.261/.346/.411 . 757OPS. And while observation tells us he's a poor defender, defense statistics don't really show that. Bill Hall is the real problem, but that's for another day and another topic.
  3. Actually it's been 74% of his plate appearances, not just half a season, but don't the let the truth spoil a good rant. I'm not going to argue Rickie is a great defensive player, and taking into consideration defense stats are a suspect study, but here's his numbers compared to Orlando Hudson. RiWeeks: 860 innings, 212PO, 263 assists, 68 DP, 9 errors, .981 fldg pct, 4.90 Range Factor vs. 4.06 league RF. Hudson: 904.7 innings; 200 PO, 284 assists, 60 DP, 9 errors, .982 fldg pct, 4.61 Range Factor vs. 4.06 league RF.
  4. I would rather have Prince than Howard. Always felt that way.
  5. I don't think Rickie is the one to replace. Seems I have to post this everyday and it seems the Rickie haters ignore it everyday: Since June 1: .261/.346/.411 .757 OPS Hall same period: .218/.287/.385 .672 OPS Counsell: .228/.329/.307 .636 OPS I too want more out of Rickie, but so far, at 25 years old he is hitting like a league average 2B. Brian Roberts wasn't any better at 25. But Bill Hall is just terrible. I know casual Brewer fans have a soft spot for Hall, but it's time to let that go. And there are many better options for a backup infielder than Counsell. He's done, folks. Keep Weeks. Trade Hall to someone like the Orioles who could use him at ss; offer Counsell a job in the organization. FIND A GOOD 3B! Oh, and a quality veteran starting pitcher. And keep Branyan and Kapler.
  6. He needs to realize a DH with a slugging pct in the low 500's is not going to win a premium contract. Carlos Lee makes $6 million more a season than David Ortiz and for several more years. He needs to decide if he wants to be a premium player or just the next Aubrey Huff. (Admittedly Huff is having a great season, but his reputation is that of a sloppy slug with poor work habits, aloof attitude toward teammates, and a porn star lifestyle.)
  7. I live in La Crosse. Forgot it was LaX day. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  8. Good point. Lately it seems like it's been the 5th or 6th when he struggles. Could just be a little arm fatigue or "deam arm" period that every pitcher goes through. His line the last 10 games is nothing to be embarrassed about: 63.2 innings, 56K, 17BB, 3hr, 4.10 ERA. It may be relevant to point out the first three starts of this last 10 he threw 115, 120, and 109 pitches. Those were also his 3 starts before the All Star break. Once again he has the lowest run support of any Brewer starter.
  9. Good post JohnBriggs. It looks like there will be several options out there this winter. Doug seems to favor shorter term deals on players who are still able to contribute but may be past their peak, ie, Gagne, Kendall, Cameron. That's not a bad strategy for this market, especially given the core players are still quite young. Lowe is a someone who they could sign for 2 or 3 years. But his road ERA has been average at best the last 3 seasons. So signing him could be like signing an older Suppan or Bush. On the one hand this gives you a hat trick of 3-4-5 rotation fillers who never get hurt and pitch 190 innings a year. I think Mussina would be a great pickup, but he's always been adamant about staying out east. Most likely he'll do another 2 year deal with the Yankees, but I could see Philly or Atlanta sneaking in and signing him. Signing Garland is kinda like the return of Capuano. He's been solid and healthy his entire career. Not a bad move picking him up. I suspect Bush is going to be trade bait in an effort to find a 3B. If that happens they're going to need to find a couple pitchers, even if they give Cappy a contract.
  10. Moehler is having a nice season. Can't say I expected that. My crystal ball says, Kendall at catcher, Counsell at 3rd.
  11. I don't agree. The thing is, his injuries haven't been serious pitching injuries. He doesn't have a torn labrum, he hasn't had TJ surgery. Pulling a hamstring, breaking a finger, those are injuries that can happen to any player at any time. I guess the shoulder injury and resulting scar tissue problems the following year can be considered pitching related, but he's had no effects from that for two seasons.
  12. Gadzooks! You got that right! Here's Lance's career line against Ben in 73 plate appearances: 5hrs, 18rbis, .328/.370/.672--1.042OPS. Of course he has a 1.382OPs against Suppan......
  13. I always figured he'd end up in Boston. I've always felt his career path, talent, and drive mimicked Schilling. He's such a poor hitter you'd think he is better suited in the AL.
  14. I expect the Dodgers to win the West.
  15. I have to give them credit. They sweep the Brewers and sit 5 games ahead. The Brewers then spend the next two weeks playing great baseball and lose a half game in the standings. Unbelievable. Never thought I'd say it this year, but now I agree: focus on the wild card and let the Cubs runaway with their 120 win pace.
  16. A sprained thumb shouldn't keep him out too long. I detect a lot of sentiment here that Rickie is somehow responsible for his injuries, as though he's dogging it, and intentionally trying to get injured. I don't know if you could find the data, but it seems to me like 2B get injured more than any other position except for pitcher. 88 plate appearances since the All Star Break: .273/.369/.432 .801 OPS. Ridicule him all you want but they are better with him in the lineup. Counsell: 64 PA: .185/.297/.241 .538 OPS. No amount of his supposed stellar defense can make up for the crap he delivers at the plate.
  17. This is actually about all I ever expected from him. When he first appeared way back in 2002 we heard a lot of talk about what a great young 5 tool talent he was. That was about the time I began to realize "5 tool talent" meant "Can't Play Baseball". He's had over 2100 minor league at bats and these are his rates: .264/.303/.387. His major leage rates are .259/.317 /.460. And some think minor league numbers aren't good predictor of major league careers! I always thought they were full of malarky when they bragged him up. To his credit he put up two totally unpredictable very good seasons in 2005 and 2006, when he was 25 and 26. Now as you noted, he's reverted back to form. It's not that unusual for players to peak at 26. He's striking out 30% of the time. He's almost done.
  18. Wow, two pitchers having identical great seasons. It's Glavine vs. Lilly in Atlanta.
  19. I think it should be called "double secret scenarios" instead of "top secret scenarios". I think the best way to control Parra's innings is for Ned to have a quicker hook with him. There's been a few games recently where he's shown some struggle in a late middle inning (5th/6th), then Ned trots him out for the next one and he can't get out of it. I suppose there's a good argument for teaching him to pitch through adversity when tiring, but still, I'd rather he left a game after 6 ip leading 1-0, then be trotted out there for the 7th. (see July 25, 2008 vs. Houston)
  20. It has to be because of the injury risk to the pitcher, but also there is a lot more catching and throwing in baseball. The ball would be slippery for every player who touches it. Every player would run the risk of a hammy pull with each throw. If it's a downpour or snowstorm in football you can get along fine running the ball and limiting the passing. Plus football is a stupid sport where most of the players are interchangeable, so who cares what happens! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. Nix makes more sense than Gwynn right now. Without Branyan and Braun there's a lot of muscle missing on the team. At least in theory Nix has some power. As well as speed and good OF defense. And he's a lefty. My guess is he and Kapler will do some platooning in LF, while Nix will get PH's late. This is far and away the best option. 2nd best option would be Dillon, but you know Nedly wouldn't play him at 3rd ahead of Gritty Playoff Veteran/World Series Hero Craig Counsell. Not during a pennant race!
  22. The arbitration clock only starts when a player is on the 25 man roster. Players only have to be on the 40 man to play in September. Once a player is on the 40 man roster his "options" clock is started in most cases. A player runs out of options after any part of 3 seasons on the 40 man roster. During those 3 seasons he can be transferred on and off the 25 man roster, pretty much at will. After he's out of options he'd have to clear waivers to be sent to the minors. So it doesn't make sense to move a player to the 40 man roster just play in September.
  23. I've had DirecTV for 5 years. My experience with their customer service has been fantastic. Yesterday I ordered my first DVR from them online. It's free "because I have been such a good customer". So is the installation as well as DVR lease fee of 4.99. We have had problems with the signal dropping out during bad rain storms--of which there have been plenty in the last year--and sometimes, a severe snowstorm. This is maddening, especially when the family blames me everytime it happens since I wanted DirecTV in the first place. We are getting the dishes adjusted in the next week or so; I am hopeful this has been much of the problem. The technician who added our second "local channel" dish was starting his first day on the job and mounted it right in front of the other dish. It seems like we've had more issues since then. Also trees have grown a bit in the last 5 years. May be time to move the dishes to a new location. I like with DirecTV you can change programming instantly. This works really well online.
  24. I calculated the numbers of our 3 headed monster at 3rd base. Here are Counsell, Hall, and Branyan combined numbers for only those games they played 3rd: 498 PA; 447 ab; 224avg, .296obp, .465slg pct. .761OPS.
