  1. To Funketown and all the others who are criticizing Melvin for the Riske signing. Yeah, we can all say that in hindsight it was a bad deal, but i agree with Hate Those Rodents that at the time all indicators showed that it was a solid pick-up. After 2007, the one glaring weakness of the ballclub was in our bullpen. We finished 2 games out and knew we were a couple pieces from the play-offs. That was the year Turbo blew up and we had to go out and acquire Cordero to save us. To say we should rely on our young, cheap AAA guys was exactly what they had been doing- and it was not working out. we didn't have studs like Axford and Braddock. Our young, cheap AAA relievers were guys like Matt Wise, Chris Spurling, Villanueva, Acquino and McClung. We needed someone consistent and reliable in the bullpen and Melvin was willing to spend a little to get him. All signs did point to Riske being a safe bet (names have a certain irony sometimes). And compared to the market at that time, especially for relievers, i never thought his contract seemed unreasonable. just too bad he had those injuries. hope he's able to revive himself somewhere.
  2. rocobrewfan- is Gomez considered a better defender? They are both excellent, and although people have mentioned Gomez's potential to be one of the best defenders, Gwynn is more consistently excellent in the field.
  3. how could you not have Mattingly in there? also, although not in the top 10 or anything- i'd think Coop would have to be up there
  4. maybe RF and LF are more valuable than 3B or 1B, because if you miss a ball in the infield- the runner is generally still held at first. whereas, if you miss a play in the OF- it's a two bagger for sure.
  5. igor, that is a good thing to point out. though, i am impressed with the spectrum- great add in logan. i see that the more difficult positions to play are definitely based on the spectrum. Which is why generally the most athletic fielders play them. However, i am interested learning which positions are the most necessary to have your best fielders at? Which positions have the most responsibility? i guess i started thinking of it with the Hart/Gamel/Mcghee triangle quagmire. which position is the most important to have your best fielder at? SS just makes sense to be #1, because it receives the bulk of balls hit to. but what about the infield and outfield corners?
  6. thebruce, when you say generally accepted- what is that based on?
  7. i'd think first base would have to be higher than #8. Even though they don't receive a lot of hit balls, they touch almost every single infield hit. a lot of times with difficult digs or grabs from poor infield throws.
  8. no real clue, but i'd think:1. SS2. CF3. 2B4. C5. 1B6. RF7. 3B8. LF9. P
  9. Would you rather have Tony Gwynn, Jr or Carlos Gomez?
  10. anyone here know anything about Mulder? rumors were spreading that he was going to sign a minor league deal w/ the brew crew before the season began and then reports were that he still wasn't healthy enough. did he retire? is a comeback still in the works? how far off is he?
  11. if you factor in what he gives you offensively per game, does that make him better than Parra/Narveson? Is there a stat that qualifies a pitcher's total offensive/pitching team worth?
  12. yea at this point- less lincecum, more nolan ryan- either way hope he continues on healthy
  13. update: 5 IP & 10 Ks
  14. Just had to show this off in case people are out of the loop. I had to check twice- cause i didn't believe my eyes- check out this kids strikeout ratio! i know it's early, but c'mon.http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=P&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=592804
  15. don't know if this fits in the conversation on either side, but I have found it interesting that certain player's defensive reputation can so easily change within a season or two. I don't follow defensive stats very much, so i primarily rely on second hand info from what is assessed and talked about on brewerfan. I'm not going to go back and look for links for this argument, but i remember at the beginning of the season- Carlos Gomez was touted as a tremendous defensive outfielder, so much so that most agreed even if he did slightly better than his offensive career averages it would justify his worth as a starter. there was a lot of talk that he should actually be in the conversation as one of the games best CFer. the last couple seasons Braun was highly regarded in LF on this board. there was a lot of talk i believe during the 2008 season that he should be mentioned in the gold glove conversation- and how lame it was that all three postions usually go to CFers. the same was true with Hart- around the same time period that he was an above average OFer, with above average speed and above average arm that didn't make a lot of mistakes. that he was totally solid. Now, most of what i read on this board is how Gomez sucks, in general- few heralding his defensive abilities, and that Braun and Hart are horrible OFers. If you concur with the changes in general sentiment on this board regarding these guys- is this because we have more data to see their weaknesses, or have they really started sucking more?
  16. and for that matter, i really like Dickerson and Gomez backing up everyone in the OF and supplementing Cain in CF. That definitely gives us a lot of flexibility and improves us even more defensively.
  17. He's pitching for the Orange County Flyers- in an Independent League. Just pitched 3 scoreless innings and struck out 6. Looks like he's back http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gifhttp://www.pointstreak.com/baseball/team_stats.html?teamid=6246&seasonid=242
  18. I have heard that next year's draft is going to be very deep. Is there any chance the Brewers don't sign Covey in order to have two 1st round picks for next year?
  19. definitely agree with your assessment of the future lineup. much more consistency. especially if Gamel and Lawrie fulfill anywhere near there projections. i actually think it is not unreasonable to think that our team HR total is going to drop that significantly either next year. i could see weeks getting even better offensively, escobar improving, lucroy improving, cain instead of gomez, braun recovering his power stroke, and with gamel in the mix to balance the power loss from fielder.
  20. i'm really hoping we stay young/cheap as well. totally satisfied with Cruz and Piglett. cruz is great defensively and can play multiple positions. and piglett gives us tremendous versatility and a solid PH bat. is Cruz under team control for next season? if not- really hope we resign them both.
  21. great, i'm glad we all agree- let's get on the phone to DM and let him know.
  22. the crazy thing about Texas' rotation is you also got Harden and Lee- they have like 10 above average starting pitchers on their 40 man. + Tanner scheppers in AAA. crazy.
  23. maybe hoffman or Riske would be of more value to them instead of Bush. or even after the season: Gamel & ptbnl for Shields
  24. Wow, don't know if we have any assets to meet their needs, but if we did- talk about an abundant resource of starting pitching. any one of these guys would be at least a 3 on our team: Tommy HunterDerek HollandNeftali FelizMatt HarrisonScott FeldmanCJ WilsonColby LewisBrandon McCarthy
  25. we would need to pursue a 1B, OF, or 3B free agent and then postionally move mcghee or hart if needed. these are the FAs that i think could be a decent 2 yr stopgap until Lawrie is ready, in order of priority: Jayson WerthVictor MartinezJason KubelMichael CuddyearBrandon IngeTy WiggingtonNick JohnsonJonny GomesTroy Glaus
