  1. excluded Andruw Jones, Johnny Damon for being near deals & congrats to Dave Bush who signed yesterday POSITION PLAYERSCF- Scott Podsednik 2B- Felipe Lopez/Delwyn Young1B- Nick JohnsonDH- Vladimir Guerrero3B- Russell Branyan/Mike HessmanRF- Jose GuillenSS- Orlando CabreraLF- Lastings Milledge/Joe InglettC- Benji Molina/Chad Moeller STARTING PITCHERSAndy PettiteKevin MillwoodFreddy GarciaJeremy BondermanJohn Maine RELIEVERSJuan CruzScot ShieldsBobby SeayChad DurbinHisashi IwakumaKelvim EscobarDoug Davis
  2. do any of these guys make sense to give a minor league contract to- low cost/high upside? - Jeremy Bonderman- Juan Cruz- Kelvim Escobar- John Maine- Scot Shields- Kevin Millwood- Doug Davis
  3. in fact- hope we trade betancourt for a good low-level minor leaguer and then pick up both Renteria and Counsell. that would give us a lot of flexibility in the infield- and much better fielding.
  4. Now with Betancrap as our SS, it seems all the more reasonable to go out and sign Renteria to play SS/2B. We need you Edgar!
  5. i wonder if DM pushed either McGhee or Gamel instead of Escobar?
  6. out of all the guys in baseball- he definitely wouldn't have be the first guy i would have guessed to be playing into his 40s. Julio Franco- yes- dude was ripped. stairs, looked like he was beer league material at 30. hilarious.
  7. you're killin' me smalls! really? yeah- definitely just that one good year. i remember when we picked him up though, i had high hopes that he'd bounce back. didn't happen though. but, one of those low risk decent reward type of deals. *hint- interestingly enough, Baseball Reference has for his #2 and #3 most similar pitchers by stat- Jeff D'Amico and Dave Bush.
  8. wegman? bosio?
  9. decided to take a stab- Cal Eldred? no....Ricky Bones
  10. Joe Piglett
  11. I see he's arby eligible. With Cain and Dickerson and two IF back-ups- probably Cruz and Inglet, we could really use some power off the bench. Will Gomez be offered a chance to stay with the crew?
  12. i would love Prince to return. But, I believe this team has a 2 maybe 3 year window of doing some play-off damage with our current guys. I think our lower levels are stocked for a future run in a few years. We are an ace pitcher away and a manager who can get his team to focus and stop making as many stupid mistakes- whether on defense or on the basepaths or up to bat. However, in order for us to get a good pitcher we'd have to trade Prince. But, we're not trading Prince unless we can exceed his value, or Melvin is committed to that 2-3 year window to make a trade under his value to help us win now. When I say, value, this is what i feel it comes down to: - 1 year of typical Prince productivity: 40 homers, .900OPS etc.- 2, 1st round supplemental draft picks- all the people he puts in the stands and merchandise his image sells If you can find value back that equals or exceeds that, then Melvin will pull the trigger. The equivalent i can think of is a young Ace pitcher with team control through 2013.
  13. Going into the offseason, we'll have a surplus of quality relievers. There should be at least 2 or 3 guys who don't make the team next year who we'll be able to package in a deal. and more once Rogers, Kintzler, Jeffress, and McLendon come up if they start the season in AAA. Of course this all assumes our young relievers keep on the course their on- but if so- that makes guys like Coffey, Villanueva, and Hawkins expendable. I also think one of these three guys won't be with us next year- Cain, Gomez, Dickerson. What do you think we could get for a package of two of those relievers and one of those CFers.ex.Coffey, Hawkins, Gomez if it'd get a good deal done, i'd throw in Narveson and Salome too
  14. a couple others that come to mind without looking into statistics are Cecil Fielder's 51 homers in '90- before that i think his top was like 14 or something, though not in a full season- and Brady Anderson's 50 homers in '96, who never hit more than 24 another time in his whole career.
  15. During the offseason, I heard that Melvin had an opportunity to sign Garland, but opted to sign Davis instead. if true, was this a bad decision with the info that we had at the time? also, would it have really mattered- how many extra wins do you think Garland would have given us over Davis?
  16. Is there a stat that breaks down how many average runs we give up in each inning? and then compare it to the league average. It seems like the Brewers give up a lot of their runs in the 5th and 6th innings. particularly when guys on the back end of the rotation are pitching. If this is true, it might give further support to the tactic of piggy-backing. top of the rotation starters can go deep, but it seems guys like Parra, Narveson, and Bush have trouble cycling through the hitters the third time through. This usually happens around the 6th inning. since they are suited to pitch well through 4 innings or so, i agree it makes sense for guys like this to tandem pitch, which should also relieve stress on the bullpen.
  17. if you put Rogers back in the rotation- he'll break down. he's had enough arm troubles as it is- i would view that as a tremendously risky move. why do that? I don't really see him being more than a Manny Parra type as a starter. right now he's a valuable bullpen guy who has found a lot of success there. i'd definitely be worried about getting over excited because he made it through most of the season healthy and putting extra stress on that arm. Jeffress, i don't know. he hasn't pitched that much- and i don't know if he's shown the dominance as a starter that i see when he comes in as a reliever. He says he's more comfortable the relief role too. personally- i'm salivating at the thought of a bullpen housed by Braddock, Axford, Jeffress, Rogers, Kintzler- for years to come. but, i definitely agree at this point i think it'd be best for both of these guys to at least begin the year in AAA next season.
  18. any further argument over the supposed 'whining' should be ended right here when you read this article on it, that also has a more fair title: But, Gamel added: "I'll play wherever they want me to play, whether it be first, right, left, third, short, second, wherever." http://milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100901&content_id=14183526&notebook_id=14183612&vkey=notebook_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil sounds like a team player to me. but maybe that's just what selfish, whiny players say to cover up.
  19. A lot of people, including myself have high hopes for Gamel next season. and with his current tear at AAA, they are seemingly becoming more possible. however, LaPorta also tore up AAA. Is LaPorta's season this year about what to realistically expect for Gamel next year? or will it be closer to Braun's rookie year? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=29402
  20. Yankees, Yankees, and Yankees, and anyone who likes the Yankees. Save only Donnie Baseball the Cubs- well, it's hard to hate them when i just end up laughing at their tragic failures year after year.
  21. i'd have to Prior- for the all around package, but Harden might have been the filthiest of the bunch. when he was on- he was downright goodenesq. nobody could touch him. i remember spring training of '07 had like 25K's in 13IP. had he stayed healthy, he might have been the best of the bunch. though, i also think Kerry Wood had some big-time potential and would have become a better 'pitcher' as the years went on.
  22. I think Gooden was 'burned out' for other reasons...
  23. quick distraction from the defense talk: i check Gamel's stats every day and since i originally posted this topic his OPS has risen faster than Strasburg's career. following it is as exciting as following a hot trendy stock pick- it just keeps going up every single day. there seems no stopping it (knock on wood). I love it!
  24. thanks for providing the link to that article, Zurch. It was great- and made me think of guys recently who we got to see their phenomenal ability at the major league level, then injuries so young and are now left wondering...what if? Out of this pool of players, who do you think would have had amounted to the best pitcher if they had played at least 10 major injury free seasons? Mark PriorScott KazmirRich HardenKerry WoodNick Neugebauer (to make it relevant for brew fans)
  25. what does 'inverse correlation' mean? sounds like an interesting post- anyone have a link to it?
