  1. With Hellickson up, it looks like Shields will be the odd man out of the rotation. Bush has actually pitched better this year than Shields and would be an upgrade for them as they continue the pennant chase, especially while Niemman and Davis are on the 15 day DL. and Gamel will provide them with a cheap 1B alternative for years to come. Shields has been a solid/great pitcher his whole career save this year which has been an off year for sure, 4.91 ERA. But, most of his peripherals are close to what they've been last year. He has pitched over 200 innings each full season he's been in the league. and is likely to bounce back. He would give us a solid #3 guy behind Gallardo and whoever we get for Prince. Bush & Shields make about the same, except i believe Shields would be under contract for 2 more years. General Contract details below:http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3210698 then we could pick up in free agency either a 1b/3b/of, for 2 years until Lawrie is ready, which'll be easier to find than a SP.
  2. long shot- Angel Salome?- highlight him for a trade?
  3. good call. any chance of packaging two or three of those together to a team to actually get a decent prospect?
  4. meaning- guys we either won't have next year, or who are redundant- at this point: Dave BushJim EdmondsDavid RiskeTrevor HoffmanDoug DavisCraig CounsellChris CapuanoGregg ZaunMarco EstradaJody GerutChris Narveson PROSPECTSAngel SalomeWilly Peralta
  5. available free agents: http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2001/05/potential-free-agents-for-2011.html good call- not many to pick from. Matt Cain obviously- but i assume the option'll be picked up. Brandon Webb maybe. Some interesting ones are:Jeff FrancisChris YoungJeremy BondermanTed Lilly but they're all more mid/bottom guys with some risk. [sigh] lets really hope Fielder breaks out the last two months.
  6. pogokat- do you have a link to find potential free agents in 2011?
  7. Assuming Weeks gets signed to an extension, which seems very likely at this time. We are going to continue to have a strong core of players together for years to come. Here's my projected line-up for next year and beyond [brackets are through when they become FAs, to the best of my knowledge]: STARTERSCF- Lorenzo Cain [2015]- (If he could keep his OBP around the .370 level- it would open up lots of line-up options)2B- Rickie Weeks [ext?]LF- Ryan Braun [2015]RF- Corey Hart [2013]1B- Casey McGehee [2014]3B- Mat Gamel [2014]C- Jonathan Lucroy [2015]SS- Alcides Escobar [2014] (would be awesome if bat came around, so he could hit 2 and Weeks could hit 3) BENCHOF- Carlos Gomez [2013]C- George Kottaras [2015]IF- hopefully resign Piglet IF- Free agent signing- like a Counsell typeOF- any old scrub STARTING PITCHERS#1 Yovani Gallardo [2015]#2 Young ace pitcher we get for Fielder [multi-year] (Melvin has said, he'll accept nothing less) #3 Top of the rotation pitcher we sign in FA [multi-year], with approx 20 million saved from Fielder/Hoffman etc #4 Randy Wolf [2013]#5 Manny Parra [2013] (think he could be a great bullpen guy, but for lack of better options) RELIEFJohn Axford [2015]Zach Braddock [2016]LaTroy Hawkins [2011]Todd Coffey [2011] (competition next year)Kameron Loe Brandon Kintzler [2017]VillanuevaCappyMcLendon [2017]StetterNarveson [2015] ON THE WINGS - IMPACT PLAYERSBrett LawrieJeremy JeffressAmaury Rivas
  8. Is 1B more of an important defensive position than RF? Even though RF gets more balls in play hit to, and needs a strong arm to get runners going to third- first base has lots of infield throws per game than good first basemen can make plays on that can eliminate hits.
  9. i anticipated a lot of different outcomes this year so far for Sheetsy. returning to form, breaking down, busting. but one thing i did not see coming at all was that he would be leading his team in IP- interesting. he's had two good starts in a row. i wish him well returning to form. (edit: more explicative topic title --1992)
  10. Through 139 AB at Nashville, Gamel is slugging .388. This is very disappointing- anyone hear any updates about his progress?
  11. I'd definitely put odds on Fielder, Hart, Bush, and even Hoffman not being with us come September. Would it be advantageous to package all of them in a 3+ team deal to reap some young top of the rotation pitching and prospects or to trade them one at a time? Maybe even add Salome or Hoffman?
  12. the crew07- i agree with your critique of their past action towards top of the rotation talent- however, i think next year will be different. We have Prince Fielder and Corey Hart to trade. This should definitely garner some top tier pitching- unless he pulls off a sexon trade to get quantity again over quality. I can see it now- ooh, i could get four more 5th starters for Prince and odds are that one of them might be good enough to stay in the rotation.
  13. you're right, filthy frog- even when Suppan is let go (somehow), Riske's probably the pitcher who's going to come up. so barring injury (which isn't that unlikely) it might be September again before he's called up again- he must be pissed.
  14. true crym, interesting that you had Chris Smith so high- i agree, he'd probably be up there- too bad he can't get a shot again.
  15. He's leading the NL in homeruns. WE all know he's going to cool off and go through a long drought period- so what are we waiting for? package him and some crap pitchers together and get this thing done. while they're at it- they might as well put fielder in there too.
  16. I feel bad for Chris- it seems like every other pitcher in the system has gotten a call up to try to plug up the hole in the Brewers bullpen (actually i believe 8 pitchers). and yet, all he's done is go lights out this year as Nashville's CLOSER. he was lights out last year in AAA too, and posted a pretty respectable 4.11 ERA with Milwaukee as well. what more does he have to do? eamLeagueWLERAGGSCGSHOSVIPHRERHRBBSOGO/AOAVGNASPCL211.83210001519.2176436271.23.233
  17. With such a big rotating door lately in the bullpen, it made me realize we have about 20 or so 'capable' major league level relievers in our system. that's a surplus for sure- too bad most of them are all scrubs- albeit major league capable scrubs. so, if you had to keep 8 of them the rest of the year, not considering salary, who would you keep? (this would factor in guys bouncing back, young guys arriving, and guys rehabbing) I'd keep these top 8. Here's my depth chart of relievers (* = current starter, + = lefthanded):1. Todd Coffey2. Carlos Villanueva3. Chris Capuano+*4. John Axford5. Mitch Stetter+6. LaTroy Hawkins7. Dave Bush*8. David Riske9. Zach Braddock+10.Chris Smith11.Manny Parra+12.Chris Narveson+*13.Jeff Suppan14.Trevor Hoffman15.Marco Estrada16.Brian Bruney17.Jeff Bennett18.Josh Butler19.Claudio Vargas20.Kameron Loe*21.Tim Dillard22.Chuck Lofgren+23.Brandon Kintzler24.Amaury Rivas*25.Mike McClendon26.Chris Waters+*27.Chase Wright+*28.A.J. Murray+
  18. Pingman- eat himself out of the league- that cracked me up and i agree that's a good possibility especially once he hits his 30s. I like the other additions too- it's funny most of them were guys who came up as third basemen together during that same time period circa 2004/2005, from my memory in Pujols, Teixera, Youkilis, and Cabrera (who might have mostly played short, which is funny now), who now are all first basemen too. So, put in Joey Votto and Adam LaRoche who were in those years as well and we've got a nice top 10 list- should be real interesting now- especially when you include defense. so now i'd go: 1. Albert Pujols (obviously)2. Mark Teixera3. Miguel Cabrera (defense, has already done so much and is only 27)4. Adrian Gonzalez (great defense and once he gets out of SD is going to put up even better numbers)5. Prince Fielder (IS better than Howard on almost all levels and is more athletic as well)6. Ryan Howard 7. Justin Morneau8. Kevin Youkilis (so freakin' underrated- there's just a perception of him that he's not an elite guy- but look at what he's done the last 2 years- but is already 31) 9. Joey Votto 10.James Loney/Adam LaRoche
  19. Mike Jones was the 9th pitcher drafted out of the first 12 players in the infamous pitcher heavy 1st round of the 2001 draft. http://espn.go.com/mlb/draft/history/_/year/2001 Ahead of him were2. Mark Prior3. Dewon Brazelton4. Gavin Floyd6. Josh Karp7. Chris Smith8. John Van Benschoten9. Colt Griffin11.Kenny Baugh Other than Gavin Floyd, I don't believe any of these guys are pitching in the major leagues and most of them are 'out of baseball.' Unlike many of the others who also suffered severe injuries, Mike Jones is still pitching and if he can remain healthy still has a chance at having a decent relief career. That, at least from an individual standpoint- could be labeled a success. It'll be interesting when it's all over to see who had the most successful career out of these pitchers.
  20. not sure if Mark Sweeney was ever a legitimate prospect. Nelson was in the BA top 100 at least one year if not more.
  21. I loved following these first basemen as they came up through the ranks (circa 2004/2005 peak yrs)- it seemed each year they would swap prospect status- and it'll be even more fun to watch their careers unfold. So, rank these guys in order of who you think will have the best career when it's all said and done. Here's my rankings: 1. Prince Fielder2. Ryan Howard3. Adrian Gonzalez4. Justin Morneau Probably don't need to put these two in the mix now, but you never know there's still time.5. James Loney6. Casey Kotchman (he was so awesome in the minors- all those injuries- a shame- but really glad we didn't take him over Mike Jones, which I was mad about at the time, but then we wouldn't have drafted Prince!)
  22. Aside from Salome and LuCroy there are so many good young catchers in baseball right now- more than i can ever remember. Especially in the upper echelon- guys who seem to be the full package. Elite major leaguers 27yrs old and under: Joe MauerBrian McCannRussell MartinGeovanny SotoKurt SuzukiMatt Wieters- ready to break out soon Plus you have guys like Chris Snyder, Mike Napoli, and Victor Martinez who are a little older but who may have not have even hit their full potential yet. Three guys (Carlos Santana, Buster Posey, & Jesus Montero) are uber talented and all, all-star capable ready to test the waters within a year. Other top prospects on the cusp of the majors- some who have tasted it already, some not include:Wilson Ramos- MINHank Conger- LAAJason Castro- HOUTyler Flowers- CWSTony Sanchez- PITAngel Salome- MILJonathan LuCroy- MILMax Ramirez- TEXLou Marson- CLE not to mention highly regarded prospects who have yet to fulfill their billing in the majors:Adam MooreNick HundleyJ.R. TowlesJeff Mathis In 2-3 years there is going to be so much good young catching- there will be no excuse if you are lacking backstop help. I could easily see 9-10 catchers all putting up all-star numbers then.
  23. this is really common in the NBA, but i don't hear of them in the MLB. First- why? Second- if there are could a sign and trade with Fielder work? Then some of the suggestions like 3 way deals with TB could work- like Mets get Fielder (long-term), Rays get Ike Davis, Brewers get one of TB ace pitchers and a prospect from the Mets. or a similar deal with BOS and Lars Anderson.
  24. With our recent unfortunate trend of being forced to deal our guys at their lowest trade value, would now be a good time to try and pawn Corey Hart while he is on a red-hot streak before we all know he cools down again? .961 OPS in the last 30 days.
  25. Didn't really know where to put this, but I often thought of Kevin Barker when Brad Nelson was in our system. Both had peaks of high prospect status within our system. Both played 1B and were expanded to OF when their prospect status dimmed. Barker was a 3rd round draft pick, Nelson was a 4th. Both have become career AAAA players. I was struck that Barker is still playing at 34 yrs old- and did well last year in a stint w/ the reds- good on him. Barker probably has had the better minor league career especially at the higher levels and the better meager major league career. but since nelson is like 8 years younger- when it's all said and done- who do you think will have had the better baseball career?
