  1. Kite Runner was excellent--I need to get the next book from Hosseini. By the way, Kite Runner is out as a movie this fall (I don't remember exactly when, though).
  2. When did we play in Dallas? Do you mean Philly and New York, perhaps?
  3. My husband and I found it interesting that the D-Backs fans around us didn't realize it was Cirillo until about 8 or 9 pitches in. I did a double-take when I realized who was on the mound. Good for him, though, to step in there, and do okay, given the circumstances.
  4. My husband and I will be there Monday night; we go back to work Tuesday morning (the first teachers' meeting of the year is Tuesday at 8 am).
  5. Regardless of the reason(s) for the altercation, I appreciate the humor in Graffy's comment about showers and birthday parties and what presents to get. That tells me that things aren't too serious, because I don't see that kind of humor coming out of a truly serious situation.
  6. Ocean of Fear (about the USS Indianapolis) is on again Friday night, and again Saturday morning. I believe you can go to Discovery.com, in their television schedule, and get an e-mail reminder for a show or shows you want to see. I know Animal Planet has that option, and since Animal Planet is part of the Discovery "family", I think you have the same option with Discovery programming.
  7. As a regular watcher of Shark Week (awesome programming, every year), I believe the new shows will all air again this Saturday. As for shows from past Shark Weeks, some of those are airing for a second time this week during the day (check local listings). Some of today's programming has already been on this week. It did start the 29th, and Saturday is the final day for this year. I enjoyed the VirtuQuarium (on a program from a past Shark Week). Some of the new stuff seems like reprocessed information (I swear I've heard some of it before), but the photography is awesome.
  8. Wow. I know athletes will do some interesting things to get a certain number when they join a new team, but, wow. Her son will benefit so much from this; stability and routine are hugely important to autistic children. Well done, Ahman.
  9. gee, thanks, splitter, I appreciate that
  10. I've taken two on-line courses in the past two years and hated the experience. I really prefer taking a class with the instructor in the same room as me during classes. It's a whole lot easier to ask questions and get answers that way. (I also took an ITV class last year--students in one city, instructor in another, meeting via satellite TV--with pretty much the same result. In-person classes are so much better.)
  11. Will it count if I imagine I'm wearing high socks? It's the end of July in Arizona--very few people wear socks of any kind this time of year.
  12. Some of the rudeness stems from those "fans" who are at the game purely to be seen; I guess they think, with the Brewers performance this year, that it's "in" to be seen at Miller Park. I posted once before that my dad took the time to teach me how to be polite at the ballpark, and I use those lessons to this day (even at Chase in Phoenix, where the ushers keep you out of the aisles during game action, but many of the fans are still rather rude).
  13. Water buffalo have very tough hides, and I think I heard the guy with the accent (the guide?) say that the lions were young, which would mean their hunting experience is minimal. I was surprised the calf survived after being used as the rope in a croc vs. lions tug-of-war.
  14. Like the guy in the video kept saying, I've never seen anything like that before, and I grew up watching shows like Wild Kingdom. Wow!
  15. UW-Eau Claire, 1993, elementary education Northern Arizona University, 1999, Master's in elementary education, reading endorsement Northern Arizona University, 2007, endorsement in gifted education During the school year at Eau Claire, I helped proctor exams for one of the offices on campus (Center for Academic and Personal Career Development, or something like that). During the summers I worked temp jobs; several summers were in the same building where my mom worked, the research and development building for a company that, in part, manufactured food packaging.
  16. Micah Owings looked pretty good early on for the D-Backs, but has lost something like 5 straight.
  17. My mother is a ten-year survivor of breast cancer. One of the most important things is to just be there, and jump in to help whenever you see a need. (This was hard for me, as I'm in Arizona, and my parents are in Wisconsin.) As several have said, be informed, but not over-informed. Ask questions if you can't find the answers. If her doctor is good (and I know he/she is), ask him/her questions about your mother's treatment. One moment at a time, one day at a time, and celebrate even the smallest victories. The emotions involved with this won't be easy to deal with, and you may become as frustrated (at times) as your mom. Support groups are a great idea, if there is one available near your mom. It won't be easy, but as someone pointed out already, ovarian cancer is beatable. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
  18. What other sport could allow a husband and wife to have so much fun together? Frying pan not withstanding? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif
  19. I attended my first game in 1978, and I've been hooked ever since (thanks Dad!). And yes, that means this is my thirtieth year of watching baseball. Why have I stuck with it? I'm not sure, but I can't imagine it ever not being a part of my life. I don't get to see anywhere near enough games in person anymore, but thank goodness for Direct TV and Extra Innings. As hard as the lean years have been (and let's face it, there have been a lot of lean years), it's worth the wait when you get to experience a season like this. There's still a long way to go, but the excitement of not knowing what will happen between now and October is part of the allure. Having watched the D-Backs go all the way in 2001, I sort of know what I can expect, but at the same time I don't. What an awesome sport!
  20. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the "Who's Now" is ridiculous. Besides, how do you legitimately compare athletes from vastly different sports (like hoops and X-games with Wade and the Tomato the other night)?
  21. I would suggest contacting the park service/game and fish (that's what we have in Arizona) if you really want to get rid of the raccoons safely and humanely. Like someone said, they can be very unpredictable, especially if they're cornered, and even more so when it's a mother raccoon and her babies. And, like someone said, what happens when the raccoons run out of places to live? They were there first, and, if they aren't causing problems, I would let them be. But have game and fish (or whatever) on speed dial, just in case.
  22. Thanks for the upside, Parkside. Having graduated from Neenah HS, I avoid Menasha whenever possible, since they were/still are our major rival in high school sports.
  23. Time Traveler's Wife was excellent, but took a bit to get into. I've read a lot of Grisham, Patricia Cornwell, Jeffrey Deaver, Michael Crichton--all good. Mitch Albom's books are pretty good--fast reads, too. As for my all-time favorite(s): Gone With the Wind, a bunch of children's lit that I can't think of right now.
  24. That is what I don't miss, living in Arizona--tornado season. I'll keep my fingers crossed for everybody (and hope my husband and I have good weather when we visit Wisconsin in a few weeks).
  25. Awesome stories! I've had a "thing" for squirrels and chipmunks since our honeymoon, when I hand-fed some chipmunks in Estes Park, Colorado. (Of course, my avatar has nothing to do with this.)
