  1. You must have missed the part where I said "with good offspeed stuff". If hitting a 95 mph fastball is so easy, than how come it can only be done 30% of the time by the stars of the game? If a receiver doesn't catch a football more than 90% of the time when the ball is in his hands (as it was in Holmes' hands yesterday) he is considered a failure. That might put things in perspective.
  2. Hitting a 95 mph fastball from a guy who has a devastating off speed pitch takes more skill that what either of those players did. If you want to talk about athletic ability, then that's a different story. Thank goodness that the NFL season is over unless you can't wait to watch that Pro Bowl on Sunday!
  3. By my count, that's 5 picks in the first 2 rounds now and 2 more pending depending on where Sheets goes. I hope Bruce Seid can handle the pressure.
  4. Another so-so weekend for the Badgers. They really should have won the last 2 Saturdays. Time to get things done in Minnesota now.
  5. Well I'd rather have Varitek than Kendall because he plays about equal defense and at least hits for some power. Kendall is good for about one home run per year.
  6. Yeah. I've seen enough of Henry Blanco.
  7. http://sports.espn.go.com...872033&name=Neyer_Rob I thought this was an interesting article on Varitek's effect on a game by how he calls pitches. It basically says there isn't one. This confirms my belief that when people talk about how Jason Kendall affects pitchers so much by how he calls games is hogwash.
  8. Good, old Paul Bako. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3872799
  9. Not a bad move for the Pirates. Maholm had a 3.71 ERA in 31 starts last year. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3872418
  10. It's always great to see Boras lose a battle. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3872796
  11. It's pretty radical, but it would be better than we have now. Baseball traditionalists and "purists" would never let it happen though.
  12. So a home run isn't consdered a "ball in play"? Interesting. That does make sense, but I never considered that. So if a player had 10 hits in 100 AB's and 0 K's, 0 SF's, and 10 HR's, his BABIP would be .000? Is that true?
  13. Don't the Brewers pretty much decide the salaries of players with less than 3 years of experience? How does the process work?
  14. The only problem with comparing DeFelice to Doug Davis is that DiFelice is past his prime already so he has nowhere to go but down. How often does Doug Davis throw his cutter? I seem to remember him using his fastball and curveball quite a bit more than DeFelice does.
  15. You mean like 90% of the time? And most scouts refer to them as "minus" pitches.
  16. Well there are some optimists out there that say the economy will be better by Q4 this year, but I agree, that might be extreme optimism. Either way, you can just go year to year and then get the big deal after the storm has passed.
  17. The smart thing that these players should do is to sign a 1 year deal to let all of this economy crap pass over and then capitalize when it's hopefully better at this point next year. If it isn't better, then you sign another 1 year deal. It could really pay off barring a career ending injury.
  18. If DiFelice is starting games for us, I might throw up. He only throws one pitch and it travels about 84 mph. That really scares me. I'd rather see him as our long man in the pen.
  19. He throws 96 mph, though. You can't teach velocity. He still has time to figure things out. Good organizations don't lose patience with pitchers like Pena.
  20. As long as Braun puts up a 900 OPS, I will be a happy camper.
  21. Last year's Minnesota Twins are what I keep looking at for giving us hope. A team that lost Johan Santana, Matt Garza, and Torii Hunter still contended, although they got very lucky in the process. So with a little luck, the Brewers could be back in the playoffs.
  22. I'm definitely going to renew my subscription to MLB Audio so I can hear one of the best voices in the business articulate baseball like no other.
  23. A Zambrano and Harden injury is pretty likely and Soriano is known to miss a few games here and there. There's no way Theriot plays as well as he did in 2008. Given all of those things, the Cubs are still a step above the rest of the NL Central, but that's why they play the games, I guess.
  24. If they do it the same way as last year, I'm sure that we'll be stuck listening to Brian and Bill in the Milwaukee area.
  25. I think it's ok to say he's an option for the 2010 closer job, but I wouldn't jump the gun and say he's most likely to be just that. We have a lot of other possible options in Dillard, Pena, and Aguilar if they have a breakout year. Who knows, maybe Julio bounces back or Morlan develops into a stud. There's just too many things that can happen for me to label Villy as our 2010 closer right now.
