  1. So the reason for the Brewers being the front runner is a "Clear vacancy at the closer position". My earlier post doesn't look so dumb after all.
  2. Well, Handricourt says we're still in it. We got some back and forth journalism going on by TH. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/37242624.html "There's always that possibility but I've dealt with Rick before," Melvin told me in a telephone conversation about an hour ago. "I still think we have a chance. We're just not there yet."
  3. Besides his injury problems last year, he's had a really good start to his career. He's still only going to be 27 years old this season so I say go get him in a 1 year deal with an option and make him our closer barring good health. If we don't get Hoffman, this would be a good plan B.
  4. And it looks like another one is going to bite the dust: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/37227014.html I just spoke on the telephone with Brewers general manager Doug Melvin, who told me he has not heard back today from Rick Thurman, the lead agent for free agent closer Trevor Hoffman. That could be a bad sign for the Brewers. It might mean that Thurman and Hoffman have been finalizing details to do a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the other team that has put in a bid for the all-time saves leader.
  5. Even before Martinez got hurt, his numbers were way down, but maybe that was a result of his injury. I don't see the Indians as the favorite in the division with 3 other qualtiy teams in Detroit, CWS, and Minnesota. Detroit can't be that bad again with all of that talent.
  6. If they're going to win the division, they need the old Hafner and Martinez to show up because they just weren't the same last year.
  7. Well if he hits those incentives, which I'm not sure what they are, but I'll assume that would make him worth even more than 6 million and even more bang for the buck. I could be wrong though because I don't know the language of the contract.
  8. Two reasons why I want to lose this bet. How about I give you a case of Schlitz and we drop the whole thing--my bad! Deal!
  9. Yeah that would make sense because then they get another year of control of his services because of the Super 2 rule.
  10. I'd go 70% on us getting Hoffman right now. I can't see him taking an 8th inning reliever job with the Dodgers just to stay on the West Coast. When's the last time Hoffman wasn't a closer? He's going to want the ball in the 9th inning. Get it done, Melvin!
  11. We agree on something? Has hell frozen over? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif When I made my wins prediction, I took the Brewers offense into account. If you could use the Brewers offensive projections as of now, how many wins would a 4 ERA get?
  12. Looking at Cleveland's depth chart right now, they have David Delucci and some guy named B. Fransisco in LF, and I assume that they'll stick with Ryan Garko at 1B with Victor Martinez filling in here and there, but has anyone heard if LaPorta has a good shot at getting the opening day job? If I were them, it seems like a no brainer to go with your future because they don't look like a contender right now, but I was interested in your thoughts.
  13. 1.5 million isn't bad for a player who has the potential to be your #3 starter. That's good upside.
  14. Not a bad deal for the Indians. If he looked good in his physical and pitched well to end the year, a 1.5 million dollar risk makes sense. I'll be rooting for him to do well so Yankee fans can do some more scoffing.
  15. The economy must be getting to people because that post is overly pessimistic. Injuries? Not this year. Poor performances? He was pegged as our #3 starter until he ran out of gas in September. He was our 2nd best starter in the months of June and July. The guy can pitch as his peripherals show. I'll bet you a case of Schlitz that he doesn't do that bad barring serious injury.
  16. 220 IP? Really? I can pretty much guarantee he won't pitch that many innings in 2009 or his arm will fall off and the "Fire Macha" thread will have more posts than the "Fire Yost" thread did.
  17. As do a lot of young pitchers with less than a year of starting experience in the big leagues. The stuff is there to be good, it's just a matter of experience and refinement, IMO.
  18. 14-10, 4 ERA, 190 IP, 160 K's, 80 BB's, 1.30 WHIP 190 innings might be a little optimistic considering we overused him last year, but I'm going to hope that his advanced age and a little luck will kick in and he'll have a nice year. There is the upside with Manny though to go 200 innings with 200 K's, but I don't see that happening just yet.
  19. Starting a Weeks thread is like opening up Pandora's box. There are so many varying opinions and perceptions on him. Yes, he has been a disappointment, but he's still a serviceable 2nd basemen that we should keep due to his price. I think that's the main thing that should come out of this thread.
  20. It's impressive that Hoffman saved 30 games last year for a poor Padres team in only 45 innings of work. The 1.037 WHIP is mighty impressive as well. He still gets a strikeout per inning so even at age 41, this seems like a great deal at 5 million per year for 1 or 2 years.
  21. Whenever I get that, I just reboot my box and it works, but it's quite annoying.
  22. A Monday with Rillo? What the heck? I thought it was Tuesdays With Rillo on the DList!!?? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif
  23. I can't wait for the first Bradley vs Pinella tirade. I hope it rips the clubhouse apart.
  24. I love watching Burrell's long, sweet swing for some reason. It has me in awe.
  25. I'm a little late, but I submitted mine today.
