  1. I'm glad Felipe fired Boras; however I would have been much happier if he had fired at Boras.
  2. Great article. Bruce seems like a knowledable, flexible guy who has more than just a plan. Gives you real hope. I like his down to earth but well-considered approach to the questions. Very nice indeed.
  3. Awesome Corey. You are now only the second Brewer I love to hate. If only you could be one tenth the player Gary Sheffield was. What a bright boy.
  4. I concur on Narveson. This scares me. It says the Crew are not willing to put him in the pen and they'll lose him. Narveson is the one who has a future in this league possibly (he might be a dud too) but the gray-haired crowd they're going after is a one year solution at best, and at worse the end of the line. It smells like Macha, which is to say it smells like old man skid marks. And denying guys like Heether a shot is just bad business as well as bad baseball for a small market team.
  5. Not in favor of this. I like minor league baseball better, so I guess--yeah, no Bud no baseball might have been better for me. AAA would've been in Milwaukee with little doubt given the size of the city, its history, and resources. Except for his unquestioned love for baseball there's nothing I really like too much about him. And what it continues to cost the taxpayers--well--they deserve a statue just as much. Bud and his unwilling minions, now that's a statue I could get behind.
  6. Jack Z. is a god. Man oh man Seattle is lucky.
  7. I think the Brewers will not forget how they messed up when they cut Vargas and then Capuano went down. Therefore they will keep more potential starters in the bullpen than typical, which is a good strategy I believe. Therefore Parra wins 5th spot. Narveson and Soup to the pen with Villy the odd man out. I especially want Narveson in the pen as a second lefty.
  8. BRAVO!!!!!! Honestly, I get accused of being so cynical and negative--I don't see how you guys can stay so positive when it's obvious that the system is at best broke, and at worse corrupt. W.B. Yeats said "the center cannot hold" and I really believe that without a major adjustment baseball will implode. Maybe not in our lifetime, but it has to. It's not a sport; it's a media agreement, a business demand. P.S. Yeah, Chelsea is the class this year, kudos to them, but nobody plays the 'beautiful game" more beautifully than the Gunners!
  9. I'm a huge football fan (Come on you Arsenal!) and one of the things I love about it is the whole promotion/demotion aspect. Every game means something sliding up or down. Getting near the relegation zone is reason to throw even more support your team's way. Promotion is a day filled with excitement and pride and hope in a way that static sports do not possess. I love the idea of a MLB Prime and MLB Secondary. Two sixteen to twenty team divisions, the bottom three demote/top three promote. This could also result in a much stronger AAA system where cities like Portland are given a chance to get into the MLB Secondary. These cities are large enough to support major league baseball and it will give them a chance to prove it. I'd go with a shorter schedule, say 120 games, April 1 to Sept. 1. Maybe even have a mid-season tournament to give a smaller, poorer team a chance to win a mythical championship (they're all mythical). Nice idea--fun.
  10. Crew 07: I couldn't agree more. The system is broke. I think we must question our motivation for being fans. Championships are essentially a monetary exercise, which is a cynical approach by nature. Believe me I feel none too good that the Brewers really don't have the ability to drop a dung-ton of money on talent, but money is so finite in small market clubs that the risk of hamstringing your franchise is much too high to bestow so much on a single player. Kramnoj: All I was saying, and saying poorly, was that the Brewers already have a difficult time signing players long term, and that will just make things worse once we hand out a 20mil per season contract. So if we sign Prince, then what? Who do we surround him with? As far as Braun goes, lets just say he's the anomaly then. I think he was stupid. If I was his agent I would've made him realize the power he has to ring out every last cent of what is rightfully his in the marketplace. I might not like the marketplace, and even think it's irrational, but it's the only game in town. And yes, I would rather have 85mil instead of 45mil, even if it meant being just a little patience. In the meantime I could get by with 2mil or so. Just a difference of opinion I guess.
  11. I never compare Braun (a top 10 offensive player from the time he stepped onto the field) to Hart (a fair to middling player at best). Braun is upper echelon and is stupid for doing what he did. And yes, a long term contract would buy out free agency dollars and years, so it would have to be considered. I know darn well Prince's people will consider it. If Milwaukee is serious about competing then it must turn out a signficant amount of young, cheap talent across the board (not just sluggers who can't field) on a more consistent basis. Then, and only then, can it consider ponying up big time bucks for a superstar. And besides, as of right now--Prince and Braun (two superstars) have got them exactly one years worth of playoff games since they've been here. Hmmmmm...doesn't seem to be really working. What would change if you decided to pay him 20 mil per than 10 mil per year? Except your ability to sign even less players.
  12. I'm totally against signing this guy. If you sign him long term you doom the team long term. It'll be the same every year--surround Prince with a lot of nothing and hope. They got lucky on Braun. Braun was stupid; it ain't gonna happen again. Gallardo is the more valuable of the two and he should be more cost effective in terms of overall price. Prince is one injury away or two years away from being strictly a DH. The 1st team that gives you a can't miss prospect and 2 or 3 projectable arms or bats you gotta trade the guy. This is Milwaukee and one can never lose sight of that. If Yount was here now, in his prime, I'd be saying the same thing. Free agency is just too out of control for a bunch of small fries like us.
  13. Here's 11 wins for Hill next year, and sucking after. It's still depressing.
  14. If that happens to Gomez the Brewers will actually contend.
  15. First off, thanks for pointing this out. I think it's salient and a really important point. The real economic problems stem from a few team spiralling the whole league out of control. You can't even come to the dance anymore without an 85 mil payroll. Of course there are the exceptions, the anamolies, as small market teams attempt to catch lightning in a bottle. But the truth is this doesn't happen enough to be important for some teams to show self-control. It's part of the sad state of affairs n baseball and one of the reasons I'd like the sport to just go belly up. The market needs a severe and long lasting adjustment that I suppose will never come. I wonder if issuing bonds can be far away as team scramble for enough money to buy players.
  16. I love this signing because it shows how much the marketplace hates itself and will work against its own interests. No way Ben pitches healthy the whole season. He's gonna lose velocity on top of whatever ails him. Sure it'll be mitigated some by playing in the AL West and in a pitcher's park, but you can only hide for so long. Here's a consistently injured player who pulls down 10mil when the rest of the market says 5 to 7 mil will do ya (based on other signings this year). It goes to show how irrational the marketplace can be. Now, I suppose you can rationalize it--the marketplace is good at that too, but when he goes down even that rationalization will ring hollow. In a case like this the marketplace could have offerred and Sheets would've accepted 5 mil with 7 mil in incentives. And that's the other thng. The marketplace is subject to the whims of even a single person (read Oakland GM) who can then skew other signings. Bedard has got to be absolutely laughing right now. Hopefully, the market will adjust itself and slap down any notions that Bedard might have.
  17. Shot in the dark. I'm okay with that. I do think this is aimed at Gerut, not with moving him, but trying to light a fire. I kinda hope it fails miserably. It'd be pretty sweet cutting an ex-cardinal.
  18. I absolutely hate it when the Cards sign a pitcher from the scrap heap--here comes 11 wins in 2010.
  19. It's already beeen stated but I think it's true. Benny will be pretty good this year if he avoids injury (I'd say about a 10% chance) and then some poor sod of a team will sign him for 3 to 5 years and completely waste their money. I kinda hope he doesn't have a good year, he left in too much of a snit for my taste.
  20. What's up with Corey Hart? What's up? He stinks. That's what's up. And worse still--he doesn't realize it. Maybe it's not his fault. But that long foul ball home run he hit when he first came up is almost a perfect metaphor for his career.
  21. Tbe Brewers are like a bunch of men bailing water out of a sinking ship. Only what they've done is that most of the workers instead of bailing the water overboard are bailing it to another part of the boat. They're slowing sinking, but very, very slowly. Now, if Melvin can somehow address the weaknesses on offense that he's created then everyone will be bailing the water overboard and we will see some real imporvements.
  22. Couldn't they find some ex-MLB stud muffin who plays in Japan to take over either of those positions?
  23. I would be shocked, and very much pleased if they added more pitching, but unless it's a minor league contract I can't see it happening.
  24. They're better than yesterday, but not much better than the end of last year. Not quite a contender. I'd say .500. If that gets us the playoffs cool. But he's not a difference maker, I gotta agree with Stevo on that. I also agree with whoever said this team is starting to skew boring. Do I really want to pay good money for the likes of Gomez, Davis, Suppan, Wolf, etc.? On the other hand there something to be said for cheap and short--and that is--here comes more cheap and short in the future.
