  1. I don't think I would terribly mind seeing Weaver or someone else just to give Parra some time to work some things out in the minors. I know that "work some things out" stuff is thrown around a lot, but with Parra it really seems necessary. I'll never forget his outing against the Cards earlier this season. At least 3 times he starte the pitch and then stopped. One time there were runners on base and he was called for a balk. He just seemed indecisive about his pitch, like his head just wasn't there.
  2. 1. Popups and groundouts are capable of advancing runners.2. Popups and groundouts force the defense to actually make a play. Those plays sometimes result in errors. 3. Popups and groundouts mean that the player is making contact, and that contact should eventually allow hits to drop in. Weak singles are still singles. Sometimes a popout is line-drive straight at the Left Fielder, and sometimes it drops in the Left-Center gap. If a player is striking out a lot, that probably means that they just strike out a lot. You can't look at a lot of strikeouts and think that the player will probably get better with them. If they're hitting lots of popups and groundouts, those hits should eventually start falling.
  3. Well, he went 7 innings in his last start. Even though it's AAA, that's more than we can say about anyone else not named Ben.
  4. When the new voice actually requires the hitters to follow directions. If everyone is just ignoring Skaalen, what does that say about how much respect they have for him? That said, I don't think getting rid of Skaalen is any kind of fix. But I think it will most likely happen before Yost goes because they'll try to pin it on Skaalen and take the blame off Yost.
  5. Yeah, shake things up means to have Hart lead off or try J.J. at #2 or have Cameron lead off or something. Shaking things up doesn't mean to bench the guys that are struggling the least.
  6. Well, 9 months ago would have been August. And we all know how well August went for the Crew...
  7. I think if you look around here, Skaalen's name has come up plenty of times. There were a few pages in one of the threads discussing how Skaalen will probably go before Yost.
  8. We're supposed to beat up on lefties, right? Right!? Someone tell me again how that we're supposed to beat up on lefties!
  9. I was just saying that if Villy or Bush are pitching in the 6th and they let a few runners on, it feels like we have to pull them in close games because we have to salvage the lead somehow. But if it's a larger margin, there's a better chance they'll be able to work out of it with the lead intact, and they'll have much less pressure on them while working out of that trouble. I was basically just drawing a correlation between our hitting and the combination of short outing by the starters/overuse of relievers. Basically, "struggling" probably wasn't the best word for me to use. It was more that if we have a larger lead, there won't be as much struggling.

  11. Yeah, pretty sure his analysis on the Twins was the analysis of any and every small market team that can't afford to pay some players. Not sure why they were singled out.
  12. I'm a little confused on the Twins. They won it all in '87 and '91. Did the writer do any research?
  13. I sure hope so. It's much easier to leave a pitcher in when he's struggling in the 6th when it's 7-1 as opposed to 2-1. Thanks for posting this, Rluz. It's been easy lately to not pay as much attention to how putrid the hitting is because everything else seems to be going wrong. I sure hope things turnaround, because it seems like other areas of the team will fix themselves once the hitting comes. Oh God, please bring us some hitting.

  15. Nice, my F5 at my work computer has gotten too much rest lately. Today you shall pay!
  16. Has anyone ever heard Ned take the blame for anything? His press conferences consist of blaming his own players or praising the other teams players.
  17. A Yost press conference and a Piniella press conference are vastly different. Piniella is frustrated because he's pissed off about something or at someone. Yost looks frustrated because he also looks scared, all the time. Those two guys are two different kinds of frustrated.
  18. Huntsville+Branyan and you got a deal.
  19. Getting back to the Braves, if they're done this year, can we have Bobby Cox for the rest of the season?
  20. And how much would the Giants be willing to pay out of Zito's contract in this scenario?
  21. The funny thing is that August was a complete meltdown, and all we heard the entire time was "We're still in 1st place!". Everyone was waiting for the turnaround when we reclaim a big lead in the division and march into October. But it never happened. Then this year was supposed to be the year. And we're all waiting for the turnaround. I would love to think it's gonna happen, but until I see at least a flicker, how are we supposed to believe it will ever come?
  22. I actually think the opposite. I would say a Yost firing would mean that Melvin or Attanasio DON'T think the season is over and they see the need to make the change in order to possibly save the season. I'll put my vote in for Monday, May 19th. If we lose the Cards and Dodgers series (not get swept, but lose the series at least), things will get a little tense. We then have two nationally televised games on Saturday and Sunday against Boston. If we get embarrassed on national TV again like we did in the 19-5 thrashing on ESPN, someone's getting the boot on that Monday (which is an off-day).
  23. I'm not quite sure I understand the categories for pitchers. How can a pitcher have good control and velocity, along with good break on his pitches, but be terrible in K/9, BB/9, HR/9, and H/9? Wouldn't these things depend more on what kind of pitches they throw? I think that's my biggest gripe about this game. It places way too much value for intangibles.
  24. I think it was Rluzinski that showed that Yo's injury would be the difference of about 3(?) wins. Something close to that anyways. I suppose in a tight race that could make a signficant difference, but I wouldn't call it a massive blow. Bobby Cox employed him as a bench coach, and considering how much fire he had when he came here, I don't doubt that he was a pretty good bench coach. But that's not a manager. And I can't say that I fully trust Melvin's decisions. Does he have some sort of past success in choosing managers?
  25. I guess this is basically what I was getting at, but I just do it in my head and imagine myself in front of a pit class. You start explaining it to the class, then when you run into a problem, you go to the book and figure it out. Then, continue teaching. Oddly enough, obsessedwithbrewcrew, I first started doing this when I was in Weather and Climate class http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
