Sounds Lose 5-3, Swept By Oklahoma City 06/01/2012 10:29 PM ET Nashville Sounds OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Oklahoma City RedHawks completed a four-game series sweep of the Nashville Sounds with a 5-3 victory on Friday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Nashville (20-34) has lost 11 of its 12 games against the RedHawks this season, including each of the last nine meetings between the teams. Nine of the 12 contests in the series were decided by two runs or less. The sweep was Nashville's third of the season and second by the hands by the RedHawks. The Sounds dropped four straight to the RedHawks from April 18-20 at Greer Stadium. Going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position on the night, Nashville led off with an extra-base hit in each of the first four innings, but managed to only score once during that time on Andy Gonzalez's first homer of the season (Audio). Oklahoma City starter Paul Clemens (6- 4) gave up one run on five hits (all against the leadoff hitter) while striking out five in seven innings for the win. Starting pitcher Wily Peralta saw eight Oklahoma City batters and was touched for three runs in the bottom of the first as the RedHawks quickly took a 3-0 advantage. After a walk to Scott Moore, Brett Wallace hit a two-out single for the first run before Angel Sanchez later brought home two more with another two-out single. The two teams traded runs in the second inning thanks to solo homers by Gonzalez and Brian Bixler. Oklahoma City tacked on their final run in the third for a 5-1 lead. With the bases loaded thanks to a hit-by-pitch, walk, and single, Landon Powell hit an RBI infield groundout to third base. Nashville scored two late runs in the top of the ninth, but came up short with the tying run at the plate. With runners on first and second and one out, outfielder Jay Gibbons hit an opposite-field, RBI double to left field (Audio) against the shift to score Jordan Brown and move Gonzalez to third. Second baseman Eric Farris then grounded out to shortstop to allow Gonzalez to score. Catcher Jason Jaramillo ended the ninth-inning rally by grounding out to first. In his fifth consecutive loss, Peralta (1-7) yielded five runs on six hits and a season-high six walks in 4 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old also fanned two with 93 pitches, 49 for strikes. Reliever Robert Wooten tossed 2 2/3 of scoreless innings while stranding all three of his inherited runners. Jim Henderson also threw a scoreless frame. The Sounds return to Music City tomorrow to open a brief four-game homestand against New Orleans. It will be the teams' third series of the year; the Zephyrs have won five of the eight contests against Nashville in 2012. Sounds right-hander Claudio Vargas (0-0, 6.52) will take the mound against New Orleans Alex Sanabia (3-3, 2.79). Box Score Wily Peralta's 2012 is reminiscent of Mark Rogers' 2011. Both were coming off of very impressive minor league campaigns and both even had successful big league stints. Then, the next year, everything goes to heck. Rogers was dealing with an injury. What is Peralta's deal? I hope it is mechanical. As far as we know, his stuff has been as good as ever, just not the command and control. There are still three months for Peralta to work his numbers back to respectability. Robert Wooten and Jim Henderson held them over the final 3.2 frames. Caleb Gindl was moved into the 3-hole, but he did not get a hit. He did strike out 4 times. http://blog.thenewstribune.com/mariners/files/2011/04/sombrero.jpg Surprisingly, K's have not really been Gindl's problem before tonight. Keep your chin up, Caleb! Logan Schafer hit a 3B and Wily Pertalta hit a 2B. Game Log Facepalm Nashville Top of the 1st Logan Schafer triples (2) on a fly ball to right fielder Fernando Martinez. Jeff Bianchi strikes out swinging. Caleb Gindl strikes out swinging. Jordan Brown pops out to shortstop Brian Bixler. Nashville Top of the 3rd Wily Peralta doubles (1) on a line drive to right fielder Fernando Martinez. Logan Schafer pops out to shortstop Brian Bixler. Jeff Bianchi grounds out, shortstop Brian Bixler to first baseman Brett Wallace. Caleb Gindl called out on strikes. Nashville Top of the 4th Jordan Brown doubles (6) on a fly ball to center fielder Brandon Barnes. Andy Gonzalez flies out to left fielder Brad Snyder. Jay Gibbons flies out to left fielder Brad Snyder. Eric Farris pops out to first baseman Brett Wallace in foul territory. Nashville Top of the 5th Jason Jaramillo singles on a ground ball to center fielder Brandon Barnes, deflected by shortstop Brian Bixler. Wily Peralta ground bunts into double play, pitcher Paul Clemens to shortstop Brian Bixler to first baseman Brett Wallace. Jason Jaramillo out at 2nd. Logan Schafer flies out to center fielder Brandon Barnes. The 6th and 7th were pretty dumb too, but not quite as egregious as the aforementioned. Gameday

Sounds' Skid Hits Five With 4-1 Defeat 05/31/2012 10:38 PM ET Nashville Sounds OKLAHOMA CITY - The Nashville Sounds suffered their fifth consecutive defeat on Thursday evening, falling 4-1 to Oklahoma City at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Nashville (20-33) has lost 10 of its 11 games against the RedHawks this season, including each of the last eight meetings between the teams. The Sounds put runners on base in seven of the nine innings but were able to only plate one run on the night, finishing 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Shortstop Jeff Bianchi continued his solid year with a 3-for-4 evening and is now hitting .345 in his 16 games with Nashville. The teams exchanged runs during the first inning. Nashville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the frame when Logan Schafer opened the contest with a single and later scored on a Sean Halton groundout. The RedHawks evened the score at 1-1 in the home half when J.B. Shuck drew a leadoff walk and came plateward on Fernando Martinez's one-out triple to right. Oklahoma City took a 4-1 lead with a three-run third against Sounds starter Mark Rogers. Scott Moore doubled with one out, moved to third on a groundout, and raced home to score the go-ahead run when Rogers uncorked a wild pitch. The Nashville right-hander then walked Mike Hessman before giving up a two-out, two-run homer to Brett Wallace. The RedHawks' third baseman's opposite-field shot was his ninth longball of the year and second in two nights against Sounds pitching. RedHawks starter Wes Musick (1-1) twirled a quality start to earn his first victory of the year. The left-hander held the Sounds to one run on seven hits over six innings of work, striking out four batters. Mickey Storey followed with two hitless innings of relief before Jose Valdez closed out the victory with a scoreless ninth to nail down his 11th save of the year. Rogers (1-3) took the loss for the Sounds after giving up four runs on six hits in five frames, only the second time in nine starts in which he permitted more than three earned runs. A pair of Sounds had nine-game hitting streaks snapped in the defeat. Second baseman Eric Farris went 0-for-4 and Jordan Brown struck out in his lone plate appearance after being a late-inning defensive replacement. The teams wrap up the series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Friday evening. Right-hander Wily Peralta (1-6, 6.52) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Oklahoma City right-hander Paul Clemens (5-4, 6.66). Box Score I am fully endorsing a Jeff Bianchi-Edwin Maysonet swap. Three singles tonight for Jeff. Bianchi was erased once when he was caught stealing and another time when he was picked off of 1st. Sean Halton went 2-4 and knocked in the Sounds only run with a GO in the 1st. Mark Rogers 2011: 44.1 IP 46 ER 42 BB 40 K Mark Rogers 2012: 38.1 IP 21 ER 24 BB 25 K There are hints of progress there, but not really. I hope Mark sticks with the Brewers system next season. No one else knows him like us, and he has a very complex history. I will be watching Rogers closely in the 2nd half of the season. Not much run scoring considering the wind was blowing out the left at 15 MPH. Game Log Pretty ridiculous. Should have been an easy inning. Okla. City Bottom of the 3rd J. B. Shuck bunt grounds out, third baseman Andy Gonzalez to first baseman Sean Halton. Scott Moore doubles (19) on a soft line drive to center fielder Logan Schafer. Fernando Martinez grounds out, first baseman Sean Halton to pitcher Mark Rogers. Scott Moore to 3rd. With Mike Hessman batting, wild pitch by Mark Rogers, Scott Moore scores. Mike Hessman walks. Brett Wallace homers (9) on a fly ball to left center field. Mike Hessman scores. Jimmy Paredes grounds out, second baseman Eric Farris to first baseman Sean Halton. Gameday

Brevard edged by Cubs on walk-off homer 05/31/2012 10:59 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For the second straight night, the Brevard County Manatees dropped a tough one-run game to their rival the Daytona Cubs. Daytona's Ronald Torreyes hit a walk-off homer on the first pitch he saw to lead off the bottom of the ninth to top the 'Tees 7-6 on Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. After a half hour rain delay, the Manatees (21-31) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Nick Shaw led the game off with a double then Reggie Keen and T.J. Mittelstaedt followed with back-to-back singles with Mittelstaedt's hit driving home Shaw. Keen then scored on a Mike Walker ground out and Mittelstaedt would score on a RBI single by Shea Vucinich. The Manatees and starting pitcher Andy Moye took that lead into the third inning, when the Cubs (20-31) struck for a six-run inning, with the big blow being a grand slam by Nelson Perez on the first pitch he saw from Moye. Before the grand slam, Daytona scored a run on an Arismendy Alcantara single and after the grand slam, Rubi Silva drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Moye (1-0, 6.23) worked five innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked one in his second start as a Manatee. Brevard County cut Daytona's lead to one run in the fifth. After hitting a two-out triple to center, Mittelstaedt scored on a Walker RBI single. Walker scored two batters later on a single by Cody Hawn. The Manatees tied the game in the top of the eighth as Hawn hit a solo homer - his sixth of the season - to lead off the inning off of A.J. Morris. Following Hawn's home run, Brevard went down in order in the eighth and ninth. Eric Arnett threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Moye and Brian Garman followed Arnett out of the bullpen. Garman threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings until his first and only pitch of the ninth which was taken by Torreyes over the left field fence. Brevard County is now 8-13 in one-run games this season, which is the second-worst mark in the Florida State League. Keen, Mittelstaedt, Walker and Hawn all had two hits each as they combined for eight of Brevard's ten hits. Walker, whose batting average was sitting at .207 at the end of April, hit .321 in the month of May to raise his season batting average 65 points. After back-to-back one-run losses, the 'Tees will look to regroup as they will host the Bradenton Marauders (24-29) for a four-game series beginning on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. Brevard County will send Brooks Hall (0-2, 5.04) to the mound on Friday. Hall allowed two earned run in five innings against Dunedin last Saturday. The second overall pick of the 2010 draft, Jameson Taillon (Should be interesting.) (3-4, 3.29) will toe the rubber for the Marauders. Taillon has struggled on the road this season as he is 1-4 with a 4.80 ERA away from Bradenton. Box Score Kudos to Mike Walker (2-4) for closing out his red-hot May in style. All the Manatee hits were by the 1-6 hitters. Reggie Keen and T.J. Mittelstaedt each had a 3B. For Mittelstaedt, it was his 6th on the season. Cody Hawn (2-3 HR) finished off a .265/.330/.461 May and has 3 HR's since May 26th. Walker did commit his 9th error. He committed his 8th just yesterday. Two more BC errors were charged to relief pitchers Eric Arnett and Brian Garman. It was Keen-ian game on the base paths for Reggie Keen. He was CS for the 9th time this season and he was picked off for the 73rd time. Andy Moye pitched pretty dang well when you dig deeper. Whatever that 1st pitch was to Perez, Moye should never throw it again. The 5:1 K:BB is very nice. Arnett's ERA sits at 2.30 now. Game Log Hot start. Brevard County Top of the 1st Nick Shaw doubles (16) on a fly ball to right fielder Rubi Silva. Reggie Keen singles on a bunt ground ball to catcher Chad Noble. Nick Shaw to 3rd. T. J. Mittelstaedt singles on a line drive to right fielder Rubi Silva. Nick Shaw scores. Reggie Keen to 3rd. T. Mittelstaedt to 2nd on the throw. Mike Walker grounds out, first baseman Richard Jones to pitcher Austin Kirk. Reggie Keen scores. T. Mittelstaedt to 3rd. Shea Vucinich singles on a ground ball to left fielder Nelson Perez. T. J. Mittelstaedt scores. Cody Hawn flies out to left fielder Nelson Perez. With Parker Berberet batting, Shea Vucinich steals (7) 2nd base, . Shea Vucinich advances to 3rd, on throwing error by catcher Chad Noble. Parker Berberet strikes out swinging. Besides the 6-run inning, Andy Moye allowed only one base runner.

Daytona (Cubs) 6 Brevard County 5 'Tees let one slip away against Cubs 05/30/2012 11:59 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/images/2012/05/31/3KYZYNmP.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Jed Bradley allowed two runs in six innings of work as Brevard County fell 6-5 to the Daytona Cubs on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Up 5-3 going into the ninth, the Brevard County Manatees let one slip away on Wednesday night as the Daytona Cubs scored three in the top of the ninth and went on to defeat the 'Tees 6-5 at Space Coast Stadium. Casey Medlen came in to try and earn his eighth save of the season as rain began to fall on the field in Viera. After allowing back-to-back singles by Ronald Torreyes and John Andreoli to start the inning, Medlen recorded back-to-back outs to put the Manatees (21-30) one out away from winning their third game in a row. Greg Rohan then singled to left to plate Torreyes and cut the lead to 5-4. Medlen then got ahead of the next hitter, Rubi Silva with a 0-2 count when Silva hit a dribbler in front of the plate. With rain coming down hard and the wet grass, Medlen couldn't field the ball cleanly which loaded the bases. Daytona (20-30) then took the lead as the next batter Nelson Perez singled to right to score two. The tarp was then finally (I added emphasis) placed on the field and the game went into a one hour and ten minute rain delay. When play resumed, Philippe Valiquette made his Manatee debut recording a strikeout to finally end the top of the ninth. Brevard County went down in order in the bottom of the inning as the Manatees lost for the third time this season when leading after eight innings of play. The 'Tees scored all of its runs via the homer off of Daytona starter Frank Del Valle. Cody Hawn hit a two-run homer in the second inning for the first runs of the game. Scott Krieger then knocked Del Valle out of the game with his three-run shot in the fifth to give the Manatees a 5-2 lead. Jed Bradley (4-4, 3.83) made his second start since being activated from the disabled list with a groin injury and he fared better than his first start back from the DL. The southpaw went six innings and allowed two runs - both on solo home runs - on seven hits. He walked three and struck out two, but did not factor in the decision. Brevard County and Daytona will close out their four-game set on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. with the last game of the series being played at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. Andy Moye (1-0, 3.38) will take the hill for the Manatees, while the Cubs will counter with lefty Austin Kirk (2-1, 2.34). Box Score No BC game story yet, but this one was pretty unfortunate for the Manatees. I am guessing there was a stink made after the game was delayed about why the delay had not been implemented sooner. Both Mike Walker and Casey Medlen made rain soaked field aided errors, Walker in the 8th and Medlen in the 9th. Cody Hawn hit his 5th homer and was the only 'Tee to reach more than once. T.J. Mittelstaedt went 0-3 with a BB and 3 K. Jedidiah Bradley got the start and was effective but he was not dominant. 6 IP 7 H 2 R 2 ER 3 BB 2 K 2 HR 8:4 GO:FO. Jed has a 12:11 K:BB in 25.0 IP in May. Phillipe Valiquette made his Manatee debut in fine fashion striking out the only hitter he faced. It was a 90 degree day in Florida. Game Log I wonder if both were on the 1st pitch? Daytona Top of the 3rd Micah Gibbs homers (2) on a fly ball to center field. Ronald Torreyes grounds out, shortstop Nick Shaw to first baseman Cody Hawn. John Andreoli walks. Arismendy Alcantara flies out to center fielder Reggie Keen. With Matthew Szczur batting, John Andreoli steals (15) 2nd base. Matthew Szczur strikes out swinging. Daytona Top of the 4th Greg Rohan homers (10) on a fly ball to left field. Rubi Silva lines out to shortstop Nick Shaw. Elieser Bonne called out on strikes. Richard Jones singles on a line drive to center fielder Reggie Keen. Micah Gibbs flies out to center fielder Reggie Keen. The turning point. Daytona Top of the 9th Pitcher Change: Casey Medlen replaces Eric Marzec. Ronald Torreyes singles on a ground ball to third baseman Mike Walker. John Andreoli singles on a line drive to right fielder Scott Krieger. Ronald Torreyes to 2nd. Arismendy Alcantara pops out to third baseman Mike Walker. Matthew Szczur flies out to left fielder T. J. Mittelstaedt. Ronald Torreyes to 3rd. Greg Rohan singles on a ground ball to left fielder T. J. Mittelstaedt. Ronald Torreyes scores. John Andreoli to 2nd. Rubi Silva reaches on fielding error by pitcher Casey Medlen. John Andreoli to 3rd. Greg Rohan to 2nd. Nelson Perez singles on a line drive to right fielder Scott Krieger. John Andreoli scores. Greg Rohan scores. Rubi Silva to 3rd. Pitcher Change: Philippe Valiquette replaces Casey Medlen. With Richard Jones batting, Nelson Perez steals (6) 2nd base. Richard Jones strikes out swinging.

Three-run ninth propels Cubs 05/30/2012 11:29 PM ET By Tyler Murray with Robbie Aaron Viera, FL The Daytona Cubs earned a gritty, come-from-behind victory over the Brevard County Manatees, 6-5, at Space Coast Stadium on Wednesday night. Powered by a three-run ninth inning, Daytona snapped a three-game losing streak, and secured its seventh road with of the season. Trailing by three runs heading into the eighth inning, the Cubs put runners on second and third thanks to an error on 3B Mike Walker and some aggressive base-running from CF Matt Szczur and DH Rubi Silva. With one out, Szczur came in to score when 1B Richard Jones struck out on a wild pitch from RHP Eric Marzec, and Daytona cut the deficit to 5-3. The Cubs continued the momentum against RHP Casey Medlen (BS, L, 2-3) in the ninth as 2B Roni Torreyes reached on an infield single and LF John Andreoli lined a single to left. SS Arismendy Alcantara then popped up to third for the first out, and Szczur moved Torreyes to third with a fly out to deep center. 3B Greg Rohan knocked home Torreyes with a single to left to make it 5-4, and Silva kept the rally alive when he reached on a fielding error by Medlen when he slipped on the rain-soaked surface. RF Nelson Perez then stepped in, replacing Elieser Bonne, who left the game in the eighth with an apparent arm injury. Perez laced the first pitch he saw into right field, scoring Andreoli and Rohan to give the Cubs a 6-5 lead as the rain poured down. After the Cubs took the lead, the game was guaranteed to head to the bottom of the ninth, so the umpires called for the tarp. After an hour and fifteen minute rain delay, LHP Philippe Valiquette came on to strike out 1B Richard Jones to end the frame. RHP Scott Weismann (S, 3) pitched the bottom of ninth, and set down the Manatees in order. RHP Frank Del Valle struggled in the early innings once again, allowing a two-run homer to 1B Cody Hawn in the second frame. The Cubs fought back with two solo homers, one from C Micah Gibbs in the third, his second of the season, and another from 3B Greg Rohan in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. Rohan's 10th home run moved him into a three-way tie for the Florida State League lead, and his 45 RBIs are a league high as well. Del Valle was chased in the fifth inning, when RF Scott Krieger took him deep for a three-run homer to make it 5-2. He finished after 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. RHP Hayden Simpson came on and limited the damage with 1.2 innings of shutout baseball, working around two hits and a walk. RHP Eduardo Figueroa and RHP Tony Zych (W, 3-3) kept the Manatees hitless through the seventh and eighth innings, setting up the Cubs' rain-soaked comeback. The Cubs and Manatees will play the final game of the four-game series on Thursday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.

Sounds' Struggles Against RedHawks Continue With 7-2 Loss 05/30/2012 11:19 PM ET Nashville Sounds OKLAHOMA CITY - The Sounds' struggles against Oklahoma City continued on Wednesday evening as Nashville suffered a 7-2 defeat at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Nashville (20-32) has lost nine of its 10 games against the Houston Astros' top affiliate this season, including each of the last seven meetings between the teams. Oklahoma City plated six of its seven runs in the contest with two outs in an inning. Second baseman Eric Farris went 2-for-5 for the Sounds in the losing effort to extend his season-best hitting streak to nine games. First baseman Jordan Brown extended his own season-best hitting streak to nine games with an eighth-inning double. Sounds leadoff hitter Logan Schafer tied a single-game PCL record by being hit by three pitches in the contest. RedHawks right-hander Brian Bass (1-0) was sharp in his debut for Oklahoma City, scattering five hits over six scoreless innings to earn the win. Oklahoma City third baseman Brett Wallace gave the home team an early 1-0 advantage when he belted the first pitch he saw from Sounds starter Seth McClung over the left field wall for a two-out solo homer, his eighth roundtripper of the year. The RedHawks doubled their lead to 2-0 with a two-out rally in the fourth. After the first two batters were retired, Jimmy Paredes reached on a bunt single and moved to second when McClung's throw towards first was errant and went into the stands. Brandon Barnes followed with an RBI single up the middle to plate Paredes in unearned fashion. The Sounds missed an opportunity to score in the fifth, when they loaded the bases with two outs against Bass. However, Jeff Bianchi grounded sharply to third, where Wallace tagged out Schafer in the basepaths for the final out as Oklahoma City escaped the jam unscathed. McClung (1-5) took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits over his five innings of action. Nashville loaded the bases once again in the seventh, this time with one out, but were only able to plate one run on a two-our wild pitch. With the sacks full, RedHawks reliever Adalberto Flores induced a foul popout from Farris before uncorking a two-out wild pitch with Bianchi at the plate to allow Caleb Gindl to race home with the Sounds' first run of the night. The right-hander then retired Bianchi on a flyout, leaving a pair of runners in scoring position as he escaped the jam without further damage. Gindl went 2-for-3 on the night, the outfielder's fifth multi-hit effort in his last 10 contests. Oklahoma City responded to the Sounds' run with a pair of their own in the home half of the seventh, when left fielder Scott Moore's two-out, two-run single off Victor Garate extended the RedHawks' lead to 4-1. Both runs were charged to Rob Wooten, who retired only one of his three batters faced to start the inning for Nashville. The Sounds pulled back with a pair of runs in the eighth as Brown ripped a leadoff double against Flores and later scored on an Andy Gonzalez groundout, reducing the deficit to 4-2. The RedHawks put the game away with a three-spot in the bottom of the eighth against the Sounds bullpen, highlighted by Angel Sanchez's two-out, two-run homer to left off Johnnie Lowe. The blast, the infielder's second of the year, extended the lead to 7-2. The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. meeting on Thursday night. Right-hander Mark Rogers (1-2, 4.93), who notched his first career Triple-A victory in his last outing, will make the start for the Sounds and face Oklahoma City southpaw Wes Musick (0-1, 5.40). Box Score HBP: Schafer (by Bass), Schafer (by Bass), Schafer (by Del Rosario) This kid needs three ice packs, two Spotted Cows, and one full body massage from someone he deems gorgeous. Future MLB Brewers SS Jeff Bianchi hit a 3B and is hitting .314 in AAA. As indicated in the game story, Caleb Gindl is emerging from his funk. Many pitchers came, and many left with hurt feelings. Amaury Rivas, still in good spirits after his perfect inning with 2 K, has not transitioned so well to the relief role. That last arm injury must have sapped some of his stuff. Rivas used to feature a low-90's heater and a plus change-up. I am not totally sure where he is at now. Game Log oof Nashville Top of the 5th Caleb Gindl grounds out to first baseman Mike Hessman. Jason Jaramillo strikes out swinging. Seth McClung singles on a ground ball to center fielder Brandon Barnes. Logan Schafer hit by pitch. Seth McClung to 2nd. Eric Farris singles on a line drive to center fielder Brandon Barnes. Seth McClung to 3rd. Logan Schafer to 2nd. Jeff Bianchi grounds into a force out, fielded by third baseman Brett Wallace. Logan Schafer out at 3rd. Gameday

Cubs drop both games of doubleheader 05/29/2012 10:23 PM ET By Tyler Murray Viera, Fla. The Daytona Cubs dropped both games of a doubleheader, 4-1 and 5-2, to the Brevard County Manatees on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Game 1: Brevard County took the first contest by a score of 4-1, powered by 10 hits off Cubs' starter RHP Rob Whitenack (L, 0-1), who allowed four runs (three earned) over 4.1 innings. The right-hander was chased from the game by 1B Mike Walker, who blasted a solo home run to right-center field in the fourth inning. The start was Whitenack's first out of Extended Spring Training since his season-ending Tommy John surgery last June. The Cubs offense was stymied against RHP Jimmy Nelson (W, 4-4), who entered the game ranked third in the FSL in ERA (2.14) and second in strikeouts (62). The right-hander allowed just one run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts over six strong innings. Daytona's lone run came in the fifth inning, when 1B Richard Jones led off with a double, moved to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on a sacrifice fly from CF Matt Szczur. The Cubs brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh and final inning, loading the bases with two outs for SS Arismendy Alcantara. RHP Casey Medlen (S, 7) fell behind in the count, 3-0, but fought back to strike out Alcantara swinging and end the game. Game 2: RHP P.J. Francescon (L, 0-1) gave the Cubs their first complete game of the season in Game 2, but allowed five runs on eight hits with three hits and five walks over his six innings of work as Daytona fell, 5-2. The game was deadlocked at 2-2 through the first five innings, until the Manatees broke the game open with a three-run, three-hit sixth inning, highlighted by C Joey Paciorek's two-RBI single in his Brevard County debut. Paciorek finished the night 3-3. 1B Greg Rohan's third-inning two-run bomb to left field accounted for the entirety of the Cubs run production, as Daytona mustered just six hits off starter RHP Brandon Williamson and relievers LHP Brian Garman (W, 2-1) and RHP Greg Holle, (S, 1). Rohan now has nine homeruns on the season and 43 RBIs. The Manatees struck first, as SS Nick Shaw and LF T.J. Mittelstaedt both hit doubles in the opening frame. CF Reggie Keen added another with a single in the third, tying the game after Rohan's home run had put the Cubs up by one for their only lead of the twin bill. The Cubs have now lost five of their last six games, and have been held to three runs or less in their last four contests. The Cubs and Manatees will do battle on Wednesday at Space Coast Stadium before heading back to Daytona to play Thursday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. First pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 6:35pm.

Brevard rallies to sweep double dip 05/29/2012 10:12 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/images/2012/05/29/JiEeyvuO.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Brandon Williamson struck out five in five innings as Brevard County rallied to defeat the Daytona Cubs, 5-2 in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie to defeat the Daytona Cubs 5-2 in the second game of Tuesday night's doubleheader. The victory gave the 'Tees a sweep of the double dip. Mike Walker, who homered in game one, started the Brevard (21-29) rally with a one-out infield single. He then stole second base with Shea Vucinich at the plate. Vucinich would then fly out for the second out of the sixth. Cody Hawn then drew a walk to put two on. Scott Krieger plated Walker with a RBI single to left and Krieger advanced to second on the throw. The newest Manatee, catcher Joey Paciorek then came to the plate and drove in Hawn and Krieger with a two-run single to left to make it a 5-2 game. Paciorek was 3-for-3 in his Brevard County debut. Greg Holle put the Cubs (19-30) down in order in the seventh for his first save of the season as the 'Tees took two games in one night from their division rival. Brian Garman earned the win in relief as he threw a scoreless sixth, while striking out one. Manatees starter Brandon Williamson (1-2, 3.67), who made his first appearance in ten days, showed little rust as he struck out five in five innings of work. He allowed two runs - both in the third - on six hits, while walking one. Brevard County and Daytona will face-off again on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. It will be two southpaws dueling on the mound as Jed Bradley (4-4, 3.94) goes for the Manatees and Frank Del Valle (3-1, 4.09) goes for the Cubs. For Bradley, it will be his second start since coming off of the disabled list. In his last start, he went just 4 2/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on 12 hits. The 2011 first round draft pick is 1-1 with a 1.86 ERA in two starts against Daytona. Box Score Great sweep today, Manatees! New BC catching duo, Parker Berberet and Joey Paciorek had 5 hits on the day. T.J. Mittelstaedt is all the way down into the .230's for a batting average now but he did contribute in both games today including a 2B in G2. Unheralded Brandon Williamson pitched pretty decent again. He has been underwhelming but successful across three levels this year. Greg Holle recorded the save. I honestly was hoping his stuff would make a jump this year, but the numbers do not suggest that. 'Tees take first game of doubleheader 05/29/2012 9:05 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/images/2012/05/29/5CcXOhZv.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson went six innings and allowed just one run, while striking out five. Brevard County defeated Daytona, 3-1 in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees took the first game of a doubleheader against the Daytona Cubs, by the score of 4-1 on Tuesday evening at Space Coast Stadium. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the 'Tees. Manatees starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson (4-4, 2.08) went six innings and allowed just one run on three hits. He walked two and struck out five as he improved to 2-1 with a 1.21 ERA in four home starts. Casey Medlen pitched a scoreless seventh to earn his seventh save of the season. Brevard (20-29) took an early lead in the seven-inning contest with a first inning RBI single by T.J. Mittelstaedt that plated Nick Shaw. The Manatees extended their lead to 3-0 in the fourth with back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Shaw and Reggie Keen. The Cubs (19-29) scored their only run off of Nelson and the Manatees in the top of the fifth inning as Matt Szczur drove in Richard Jones on a sacrifice fly to right field. The 'Tees plated an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Mike Walker hit a solo homer, his fifth of the season to tie T.J. Mittelstaedt for the team lead. Parker Berberet, Keen and Walker had two hits each as the Manatees went 4-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the first game of the double dip. Box Score Jimmy Nelson is dominating the Florida State League. Only three hits allowed tonight and an uncharacteristic 6 FB outs compared to 6 GB outs. Reggie Keen is burning up the base paths as he now has 17 on the year against 7 CS. Mike Walker is making a case to be the Manatee hitting rep at the FSL All-Star game. Earlier this year, A-Ball Cub Arismendy Alcantara hit a walk-off homer against the Manatees. Today, he committed his 22nd error of the season. Sources close to the situation indicate that Alfonso Soriano has been serving as a roving infield instructor for the Cubs on big league off days. Results are beginning to show. Game Log Two 1-2-3 innings on the night for Nelson.

2012 General Draft Discussion
Tedaldtada replied to colbyjack's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Big Time Brewers Nugget in Keith Law's latest mock. Here are the picks: 27. Clint Coulter: C HS Washington 28: Lucas Sims: RHP HS Georgia Law reveals it is industry consensus that Coulter is a "pretty much a lock" at 27. He has a cannon and "he'll hit" but he may not stick behind the plate. -
My shoulder hurts when I throw. Has for about 5 years. About 3 weeks ago, it was killing me after a game of playing SS in my softball league. By the next week, I had nursed it back to being tolerable. Then, the first throw I made, my whole arm went numb and it really hurt. There is no way I could have made a throw the rest of the game so it was lucky I did not have to. The next day, my shoulder felt better than ever and now I am virtually pain free when I throw. Did I break up some scar tissue or something?

I just wanted to start by thanking bkrause2 and SessileFielder for filling in for me this weekend. I followed along from the raft we have floating in the middle of our lake while my wife and in-laws were catching bass and blue gills off the dock. #EndingBragAbout"TheLife" I am now back for the foreseeable future. I will have an extended (4-5 days) absence in the beginning of August, so I will be soliciting volunteers before that. Again, thanks! ********* Sounds Drop Homestand Finale In 10 Innings 05/28/2012 6:38 PM ET Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Round Rock Express plated three runs in the top of the tenth inning to record an 8-5 victory over the Nashville Sounds in a Memorial Day matinee at Greer Stadium. With the defeat, Nashville (20-30) missed a chance to record its third winning home series in the last four sets at Greer as the teams split their four-game holiday weekend series. The game was the Sounds' seventh extra-inning contest of the year (4-3), which ties for the most in the PCL. Luis Hernandez led off the Round Rock tenth with a go-ahead solo homer to right on a 3-2 offering from Sounds reliever Jim Henderson (3-2), who suffered the loss after allowing his first runs of the season during his two-plus-inning stint. The right-hander, who was tagged for four runs on the afternoon, had opened the season with 24 1/3 scoreless frames. (Big time props to Jim Henderson for his start to the season.) Yangervis Solarte followed the homer with a single and quickly moved to third on Ryan Spilborghs' double off the batter's eye in center field, which chased Henderson. Victor Garate took over on the hill for Nashville and struck out Brad Nelson before issuing an intentional walk to Joey Butler to load the bases with one out. Michael Bianucci, who plated four runs on the afternoon as part of a 2-for-5 effort, followed with a two-run double into the left field corner that upped the visitors' lead to three. Round Rock closer Tanner Scheppers retired the Sounds in order on three flyouts in the bottom of the frame to secure the victory and notch his eighth save of the year. Former Vanderbilt star Matt Kata, who went 3-for-5 and missed the cycle by a triple, led off the contest with a solo homer to right off Sounds starter Claudio Vargas, who made his first home start of the season for Nashville. The blast was Kata's fifth of the season. Solarte, the Round Rock second baseman, cut down the Sounds' attempt to answer the rally in the bottom of the frame. Eric Farris led off the inning with a double that extended his hitting streak to eight games, moved to third on a groundout, and attempted to score on Corey Patterson's grounder to second but was thrown out at the plate. It was a staff pitching effort for Round Rock after scheduled starter Zach Jackson, a former Sounds, was a late scratch due to illness. Derek Hankins started and worked a pair of scoreless frames before giving way to Ben Snyder, against whom the Sounds rallied to take the lead in the third. Catcher Dayton Buller led off with a single, was sacrifice to second by Farris, and came plateward on an RBI single up the middle off the bat off Jeff Bianchi, who has hit safely in nine of his 12 starts with Nashville. Later in the frame, Sean Halton ripped a go-ahead RBI double (Audio) into the left field corner for a 2-1 Sounds lead. Round Rock pulled back ahead with a two-spot of its own in the following half-inning as a pair of two-out walks came back to haunt Vargas. Bianucci put the visitors on top, 4-3, with a bases-loaded, two-run single with two outs in the frame. The back-and-forth affair continued in the bottom of the fourth when Caleb Gindl clubbed a two-run homer (Audio) to right off Snyder, the outfielder's fourth big fly of the year. Jay Gibbons, who joined the Sounds earlier in the day, also scored on the blast after preceding Gindl with his first Triple-A hit of the season. The Express knotted the score in the fifth on Spilborghs' two-out RBI single, which chased Vargas from the contest. Vargas took a no-decision after he allowed four runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings in his third start for Nashville, tossing a season-high 76 pitches in the outing. Nelson put the Express back in front with a mammoth solo homer in the top of the eighth inning off Henderson, which snapped the right-hander's season-opening scoreless streak at 24 1/3 innings. The homer, which landed on Chestnut Street well beyond the right field wall, was Nelson's sixth of the year and gave Round Rock a 5-4 lead. (I think Nelson spent at least some (11/1/2002-5/29/2003) time as the #1 P50 Prospect before J.J. Hardy staked claim. In other words, this is a perfect example of how even the most exciting prospects can fall short. Highly touted guys fail regularly and superstars can come out of nowhere.) The see-saw battle was tied once again in the bottom of the eighth as the Sounds etched across the tying run against Express reliever Johan Yan. Halton (2-for-4) led off with a single and moved to third on a Brown single before scoring on Andy Gonzalez's double-play groundout. The Sounds embark upon a four-game road trip to Oklahoma City tomorrow. Right-hander Mike Fiers (Nope. Boy got the call) (1-3, 4.42) is scheduled to man the bump for Tuesday's 7:05 p.m. series opener against the RedHawks (AAA-Astros). Oklahoma City will send southpaw Dallas Keuchel (4-4, 4.52) to the hill. Box Score That was a great game write-up tonight. I'll just add some things: Caleb Gindl hit 8th and raised his average to .200. Sean Halton is a hot week away from some bfan.net buzz. Jeff Bianchi might have signed with the perfect team. He is hitting .341. Jim Henderson must have been frustrated. First he is passed over for Mike McClendon again. Now his incredibly noteworthy streak is over. Rough week, Jim. Sounds have been playing better ball lately, especially at home, but they are losing players to the bigs left and right. Game Log Gross start Round Rock Top of the 1st Matt Kata homers (5) on a fly ball to right field. Luis Hernandez flies out to center fielder Caleb Gindl. Yangervis Solarte grounds out, second baseman Eric Farris to first baseman Sean Halton. Ryan Spilborghs grounds out, third baseman Andy Gonzalez to first baseman Sean Halton. Thanks Mass! ********* Attention Aspiring Link Reporters: I am heading back up north this upcoming weekend. I could really use some help filing Link Reports for Brevard County and Nashville on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. It is really quite fun and a great platform to express your thoughts on some of the youngsters. Last time up there (Iron Mountain, MI) we discovered my wife, via Verizon, gets some 3G service. The problem is that I would be writing with her iPhone, making the process a bit more tedious. So if there is anyone who could help me out some of those nights, please let me know. Thanks! Note: TheCrew07 has selflessly offered to do all four reports each night. He is the man. But, c'mon guys and gals! Can't someone take one of the nights at least? I know he would really appreciate it and I certainly would too. Let him know or post something here if you're interested.

'Tees trounce Charlotte, 12-1 05/23/2012 10:35 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - For the second straight night, the Brevard County Manatees routed the Charlotte Stone Crabs as the 'Tees were victorious 12-1 on Wednesday night at Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte. Shawn Zarraga had a career-high five RBI and Jimmy Nelson earned his first win since April 16. Brevard had a season-high 18 hits and ten of their eleven RBI came with two outs. The 'Tees (19-26) were up against Stone Crabs starter C.J. Riefenhauser who had not allowed a run in his last 26 innings of work, but that streak came to end as Brevard County scored eight runs in 3 2/3 innings against the reigning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week. (dang, that's nice.) Brevard's big inning came in the fourth as the 'Tees scored six runs on five hits and benefitted from two Charlotte (22-23) errors. The final blow in the frame came off the bat of Zarraga as he greeted reliever George Jensen rudely with a three-run homer on a 3-2 count. Zarraga was 3-for-4 on the night and in his last five games is hitting .600 (12-for-20) with two doubles, two home runs, eight RBI and eight runs scored. Five other Manatees had multi-hit games including Shea Vucinich who was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. In his last five games, Vucinich is hitting .526 (10-for-19) with five RBI and nine runs scored. Mike Walker added three hits of his own, while T.J. Mittelstaedt, Reggie Keen and Franklin Romero Jr. had two hits each. As a team in the last five games, Brevard County is hitting .340 with eight home runs and 48 runs scored. Nelson (3-4, 2.27) recorded his third straight quality start as he allowed just one unearned run in seven innings of work, while scattering five hits and striking out seven. Nelson has struck out at least six in seven of his ten starts and now has 62 on the season. The Manatees will look to make it three in a row and take the series from the Stone Crabs as the two teams meet in the series finale on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. Brandon Williamson (1-2, 3.68) will toe the rubber for the 'Tees. Williamson allowed one unearned run in five innings of work, while striking out five in his last start this past Saturday against Fort Myers. Charlotte will send Grayson Garvin (2-3, 4.31) to the mound, in hopes of earning a split with the 'Tees. The southpaw was drafted 59th overall by Tampa Bay in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Vanderbilt. Box Score This is like crazy bizarro world around these parts. Is Charlotte a renowned hitters park? Did the boys appease the baseball gods with some sort of voodoo? What exactly is Shawn Zarraga's role in all of this? Speaking of Zarraga (3-4 HR), he is now a .301 hitter on the season. Shawn has 12 hits in his last 5 games and more BB than K on the season (8:6). Brand new two-hitter Shea Vucinich (4-5 2B HBP) is well on his way to a POtM award for May (1.046 OPS). Mike Walker (3-5 2 2B) has pushed his line towards respectable. The only Sea Cow without a base knock was poor Nick Shaw, but he walked once. There were too many great games to mention. Jimmy Nelson has been a rock in a rotation of impressive pitchers. 7 IP 5 H 1 R 0 ER 0 BB 7 K 1 WP. He is not long for BC if he keeps his ERA around 2.00. Remember, this kid is touching 98 MPH, so the results closely match the stuff. Game Log BC scored in 7 of 9 innings, but they got a six spot here.
