Schafer Provides Game-Winning Hit In Sounds' 4-3 VictoryOver Omaha 04/30/2012 10:09 PM ET NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Outfielder Logan Schafer crushed a game-winning double to center with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Nashville Sounds a 4-3 victory over the division-rival Omaha Storm Chasers in the opener of a four-game series at Greer Stadium on Monday night. With the game tied 3-3 entering the ninth, outfielder Corey Patterson reached an infield groundout, moved to second on a single from catcher Martin Maldonado, and scored on the game-winning hit from Schafer (3-for-5). It was Nashville's (6-17) second win in a row and third last at-bat victory of the year. The victory was also the first against Omaha this season through the first five contests. Sounds starting pitcher Mark Rogers matched his Triple-A career high with 5 1/3 innings (well, it is something) of work in a no-decision. The 26-year-old gave up one run on five hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out two in 77 pitches, 47 for strikes. After Schafer singled to lead off the contest, second baseman Brooks Conrad crushed a two-run homer over the left field wall for 2-0 lead. Conrad's third long ball of the season also extended his hitting streak to a team-best eight straight games. Nashville was able to tack on another run in the fifth against Omaha starter Mike Montgomery for a 3-0 advantage. Schafer pushed a perfectly-placed two-out bunt passed the pitcher to advance to first and was followed by a walk to Conrad. Third baseman Taylor Green then singled to right field to bring home Schafer. Omaha first baseman Clint Robinson put the Storm Chasers on the board in the top of the sixth inning with a solo blast off the clubhouse beyond the center field wall. The homer was Robinson's fifth of the year. Storm Chasers third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff led off the visiting half of the seventh frame with a double off reliever Victor Garate. Two batters later, Omaha center fielder and former Sound Jason Bourgeois hammered a game-tying line-drive homer to left field. The two-run shot was his first of the year. Garate was charged with two runs on two hits in 1 2/3 innings while giving Nashville its third blown save in five chances. Jim Henderson (2-1) fanned two over pitched two scoreless frames for the victory. The right-hander has yet to allow a run this season, extending his scoreless streak to a 12.0 innings over six appearances, both team-highs. Montgomery recorded his third straight quality start in a no-decision. The Royals' top prospect gave up three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work. Reliever Jeremy Jeffress (2-2) was charged with the loss with the run in the ninth. The Sounds and Storm Chasers continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Tuesday night at Greer Stadium. Sounds right-hander and Brewers top prospect Wily Peralta (0-2, 3.68) takes the mound against Omaha southpaw Will Smith (0-1, 3.76). Box Score Well that was a fun one. Logan Schafer (3-5 2B) was the hero. Relive the moment. Brooks Conrad (1-3 HR BB) and Taylor Green (2-4) were the other star hitters. Edwin Maysonet also went 2-4 but check out the baserunning section of the box score. BASERUNNING SB: Maysonet (1, 2nd base off Colon, R/Clark, C). CS: Maysonet (1, 2nd base by Montgomery/Clark, C). PO: Maysonet (1st base by Montgomery). That is a first for me. 2004 1st round pick Mark Rogers got the start and was effective. Final line: 5 1/3 IP 5 H 1 R 1 ER 3 BB 2 K 1 HR 7:4 GO:FO Jim Henderson finished the game and earned the win. 2 IP 1 H 0 R 2 K. He is unscathed for the month. Game Log Rogers had no clean innings. Manatees drop Monday matinee to Clearwater 04/30/2012 3:19 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/images/2012/04/30/UFMnEyHC.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Brandon Williamson allowed five runs in three innings of work as Brevard County lost 5-1 to the Clearwater Threshers on Monday afternoon at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees lost the final game of their six-game homestand on Monday afternoon to the Clearwater Threshers by a score of 5-1 at Space Coast Stadium. Offensively, the Manatees were held to just four hits, struck out nine times, left eight men on base and went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. The 'Tees were able to draw five walks off of Clearwater's starter Brody Colvin over six innings but it only resulted to one run. The lone Brevard County run came in the bottom of the sixth as Cody Hawn led off the inning with a walk and was driven in two batters later by Shea Vucinich who laced a RBI double down the left field line. Brandon Williamson made his second start for the Manatees and went just three innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits. He walked two, hit two batters and struck out one. Out of the bullpen, Brian Garman (3 IP), Eric Arnett (2 IP) and Greg Holle (1 IP) combine to shutout the Threshers the rest of the way. Clearwater's big inning came in the top of the second as they scored four times. Both Cameron Rupp and Peter Lavin each had a two-run single in the inning. Brevard County closes out the homestand by going 3-3 and now sits with a record of 11-13 with the calendar turning to May. The Manatees will hit the road for a seven-game road trip, which will begin with a three-game set with the Tampa Yankees beginning on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. 2011 first round pick Taylor Jungmann (2-2, 2.45) will take the hill for the Manatees. Jungmann's last start came against the Yankees last Thursday and he threw 6 2/3 shutout innings and struck out five. Tampa will counter with Michael O'Brien (2-1, 4.50). O'Brien's struck out seven in six innings of work in his last start, which was against the 'Tees this past Thursday. Box Score The Phillies, much like the Brewers, emptied their farm system coffers to acquire pitching. Now, most would agree that the remaining system is barren. One of the holdovers who some like is Brody Colvin. Colvin is repeating A+ this season after a very mediocre 2011 campaign. He has been improved in 2012, and continued that improvement against the Manatees today. Brandon Williamson was roughed up but up three relievers combined for a strong finish. Brian Garman (3 IP 0 H 0 R 3 K HBP 2.77 season ERA), Eric Arnett (2 IP 1 H 0 R 1 BB 3 K 3.18 season ERA) and Greg Holle (1 IP 1 H 0 R 0 BB 1 K 2.84 season ERA) are part of what might be the best overall pitching staff I have seen on a Brewer affiliate. The hitters, fielders and base runners were all sub-par and not really worth mentioning in this one. Hopefully these boys took advantage of their entire afternoon off and re-charged their batteries. Game Log Arnett manned up to strand a man at 3rd. Clearwater Top of the 7th Pitcher Change: Eric Arnett replaces Brian Garman. Peter Lavin doubles (5) on a fly ball to left fielder T. J. Mittelstaedt. Carlos Alonso grounds out to first baseman Michael Walker. Peter Lavin to 3rd. Brandon Tripp strikes out swinging. Jim Murphy strikes out swinging. -
Manatees take down Threshers, 4-1 04/29/2012 9:03 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/images/2012/04/29/6jEHeEVM.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Hiram Burgos threw six shutout innings as Brevard County defeated the Clearwater Threshers 4-1 on Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - After being swept last week at Clearwater and losing the opening game of this series, the Brevard County Manatees recorded their first win of the season over their North division rivals as they defeated the Threshers 4-1 on Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium. Hiram Burgos (1-1, 0.99) - coming off of taking a no-hitter into the ninth in his last outing which was against the Threshers - threw six shutout innings and earned his first win of the season. Brooks Hall threw three innings of relief and earned the save. Brevard County (11-12) got on the board first in the bottom of the second with two outs as Shawn Zarraga doubled to right field. He was then driven in by a RBI single by Shea Vucinich. Vucinich was thrown out on the play trying to stretch a single into a double. Mike Walker gave the 'Tees a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth as he led off the inning with a solo homer to right field. It was his second home run of the season. Clearwater (10-11) cut Brevard County's to 2-1 in the top of the seventh as the Threshers racked up three consecutive singles to start the inning against Hall. Kyle Lafrenz would ground into a double play to score Cody Asche for the run. The Manatees added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eight as T.J. Mittelstaedt reached on an error that scored Juan Sanchez. Cody Hawn would then bring home Reggie Keen on a sacrifice fly to right. Keen was 2-for-4 on the night with a run scored and a stolen base out of the leadoff spot. Brevard County and Clearwater will wrap-up their three-game set with a Monday matinee at 10:35 a.m. Brandon Williamson (0-0, 1.50) will get his second start for the Manatees, while the Threshers will send Brody Colvin (0-2, 4.43) to the mound. Box Score Despite rapping only 5 hits, the Manatees scored 4 runs. That was more than enough for this stellar pitching staff. Reggie Keen (2-4 SB) and Mike Walker (1-2 HR) led the way with hits. Three sacrifice hits and four walks for the 'Tees. Nick Shaw got into the game late and played SS. Hiram Burgos (6 IP 5 H 0 R 0 BB 2 K 1 Pickoff) and Brooks Hall (3 IP 4 H 1 ER 0 BB 2 K) combined to severely hamper the opposing team's hitters. Three of the nine Clearwater hits were infield singles (2 bunt, 1 to the SS). 9:9 GO:FO for the Sea Cow pitchers. It is good to see good pitching. Sure helps to hide a cold offense too. Burgos has a 0.99 ERA now and hitters are batting .142 against him. Hall continues to progress towards his own starting spot in the rotation. A promotion will need to happen for that, however. Game Log Burgos easily could have had another perfect game going through four if not for some weak hits. A young Met lined a single for a hit to lead off the 5th inning. Clearwater Top of the 1st Peter Lavin grounds out to first baseman Cody Hawn. Albert Cartwright flies out to center fielder Reggie Keen. Brandon Tripp grounds out, second baseman Shea Vucinich to first baseman Cody Hawn. Clearwater Top of the 2nd Jim Murphy grounds out, second baseman Shea Vucinich to first baseman Cody Hawn. Cody Asche singles on a ground ball to shortstop Juan Sanchez. With D'Arby Myers batting, Hiram Burgos picks off Cody Asche at 1st on throw to Cody Hawn. D'Arby Myers flies out to left fielder T. J. Mittelstaedt. Clearwater Top of the 3rd Brock Stassi flies out to left fielder T. J. Mittelstaedt. Kyle Lafrenz grounds out, third baseman Michael Walker to first baseman Cody Hawn. Edgar Duran grounds out, shortstop Juan Sanchez to first baseman Cody Hawn. Clearwater Top of the 4th Peter Lavin singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Michael Walker. Albert Cartwright strikes out swinging. Brandon Tripp flies out to right fielder Franklin Romero Jr. Jim Murphy flies out to right fielder Franklin Romero Jr.

Okay, this is a long one. I need advice on a possible trade I am working on. The League: H2H (R HR RBI SB AVG OPS, W SV K ERA WHIP QS). A 6 year old 10 team full MLB keeper league. Can keep up to 8 players for next season (2013), 9 for 2014 and 10 for 2015. After that, it stays at 10. You can keep players forever. There is no minor league roster (ESPN league). I have not won for 3 years but I believe I have positioned myself for prolonged success. My keep-able players already on roster: Ryan Braun, Jacoby Ellsbury, Evan Longoria, Hanley Ramirez, Giancarlo Stanton, Buster Posey, Bryce Harper, Clayton Kershaw, Stephen Strasburg and Trevor Bauer. I am deep in pitching: Kershaw, Stras, Garza, Romero, Morrow, Gio Gonzalez, Wainwright, McCarthy, Niemann and 5 legit closers. Due to slow starts from some, my offense is struggling: Morales, Kendrick, Dee Gordon along with some of the above. Plus injuries: Ellsbury and Quentin .......... So here is the trade. Ellsbury and Morrow/Waino/Garza/Gio for Mike Trout and an 11th round pick (3rd round after keeper selections) I do have plenty of pitching to deal, but I need to ask for more, no? The big risk is Ellsbury's health and Trout's performance (especially for this year). Does anyone project this deal to significantly help me for this year? How does the 5 year outlook appear? Anyone feel strongly one way or the other on this? I think I would be overpaying, especially for this years performance from Trout.

Sounds Back On Winning Track With Shutout Of I-Cubs 04/28/2012 11:47 PM ET Nashville Sounds DES MOINES, Iowa - The Nashville Sounds snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the division-rival Iowa Cubs on Saturday evening at Principal Park in the middle game of a weather-shortened three-game series. Three Sounds hurlers combined on the three-hit shutout, the club's second of the young season. Mike Fiers started and worked six frames, Juan Perez put up zeroes in the seventh and eighth innings, and Amaury Rivas closed out the win by notching his first career save with a scoreless ninth. Iowa had runners on base in six of the nine innings but did not advance a runner past second all evening, finishing 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position against Nashville pitching. Nashville (5-17), which recorded a win for the first time since April 15th, broke up a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning against Iowa reliever Casey Coleman. After Logan Schafer legged out a one-out double, Iowa intentionally walked Brooks Conrad to put two runs on base for Caleb Gindl, who hit a grounder to first. I-Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo hit Conrad with the throw to second as he attempted to turn a double play and the ball caromed into left field, allowing Schafer to score the night's first run. Sean Halton followed with an RBI double to left to bring home Conrad for a 2-0 advantage. The Sounds missed a chance to add to the lead, however, as Taylor Green was intentionally walked to load the bases but Coleman struck out Martin Maldonado looking and induced an inning-ending groundout from Eric Farris to escape the jam with no further damage. Nashville tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth when pinch-hitter Corey Patterson led off with a triple off Coleman and scored on Hainley Statia's ensuing RBI single to center to extend the Sounds' lead to 3-0. Conrad went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple to extend Nashville's longest hitting streak of the season to seven games. He is batting .395 (15-for-38) in 12 games this season. Both starting pitchers turned in outstanding efforts but took no-decisions in the contest. Fiers continued his career dominance of the I-Cubs with six frames of scoreless, three-hit ball. In three starts against Iowa, the right-hander has posted a miniscule 0.82 ERA (2er/22.0ip). Iowa starter Chris Rusin continued his strong start to the season by authoring his third quality start of the year, allowing only three hits and striking out four Sounds batters over six scoreless innings to drop his season ERA to 2.63 through five starts. Perez (1-0) picked up the win with his two hitless innings of relief for the Sounds and Rivas worked around a one-out walk to put up a goose egg in the ninth and notch his first professional save in his 28th career relief outing. The Sounds will attempt to secure their first winning series of the season when the teams complete the three-game set with a 1:05 p.m. finale on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Mark Rogers (0-2, 7.50) makes his third start of the year for Nashville. Iowa will counter with right-hander Jay Jackson (1-2, 6.20). Box Score Mass Haas turns the tide for the Sounds Fueled by trillions of Mass Haas' Twitter 1's and 0's, Michael Fiers pitched his best game of the season. 6 IP 3 H 0 R 1 BB 4 K 1 HBP 2:8 GO:FO 1 Pickoff on 72 pitches (48 strikes). Other mana recipients included Brooks Conrad (2-3 2B 3B 2 BB), Sean Halton (1-3 2B 2 BB), Logan Schafer (1-4 2B) and Taylor Green (0-2 2 BB). The game was scoreless until the top of the 8th. Caleb Gindl, without the use of raining mana, gunned a runner at 1st base for sweet 1st inning DP. Iowa Bottom of the 1st Brett Jackson strikes out swinging. Clearwater (Mets) 10 Brevard County 3 'Tees thrashed by Threshers, 10-3 04/28/2012 10:16 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/images/2012/04/28/yGCfjMIl.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Jed Bradley allowed five earned runs in five innings of work in Brevard County's 10-3 loss to the Clearwater Threshers on Saturday night. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees dropped the series opener to the Clearwater Threshers on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium by the score of 10-3. Lefty Jed Bradley (2-2, 2.79) struggled as he allowed six runs - five earned - in five innings of work. He gave up six hits and walked two, while striking out five. It snaps a streak of four consecutive quality starts by the Manatees (10-12) pitching staff. A two-run homer by Clearwater's Jim Murphy gave the Threshers a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Manatees got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning, thanks to back-to-back RBI groundouts by Cody Hawn and Mike Walker. Brevard County took its first and only lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning as Adam Weisenburger scored on a bunt attempt by Franklin Romero Jr. The bunt went to the first base side and the first baseman Murphy tried to tag Romero Jr. out and initially Romero Jr. was called safe. That prompted a visit to the umpires by Clearwater manager Chris Truby. The two umps then got together and ruled Romero Jr. out, which sent Manatees manager Joe Ayrault into a frenzy that led to him being ejected from the game. Clearwater (10-10) took the lead back with two runs in the top of the third and then two more in the top of the fifth as Bradley's night ended after five innings with Brevard County trailing 6-3. Thomas Keeling and Eric Arnett each threw a scoreless inning of relief after Bradley exited. Connor Whalen entered the game in the eighth and proceeded to allow four runs on five hits in his two innings of work. Once again, the Manatees couldn't get their bats going as the struck out eight times and went 1-for12 with runners in scoring position. T.J. Mittelstaedt did go 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. He currently leads Brevard County with a .286 batting average. Brevard County and Clearwater will square off again on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. in the second game of this three-game set. The Manatees will send Hiram Burgos (0-1, 1.27) to the mound. In his last start this past Tuesday against Clearwater, Burgos took a no-hitter into the ninth inning but ended up with the loss in a 1-0 game. The Threshers will counter with southpaw Adam Morgan (0-1, 3.42). He threw seven shutout innings and struck out six against Brevard County this past Tuesday. Box Score When Eric Arnett owns the cleanest pitching line (1 IP 1 H 0 R 0 BB 2 K 1 WP) and backup catcher Adam Weisenburger (1-2 2 BB) accounts for one third of the Manatee base runners, you can go to bed knowing that Yovanni Gallardo the Brewers will eventually beat the Cardinals again, because this is baseball and anything can happen. Okay, that is a bit dramatic, but still. Jed Bradley started and probably wants another chance at it. He gave up 2 runs in each of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th innings. 5 IP 6 H 6 R 5 ER 2 BB 5 K 1 HR 4:5 GO:FO. My box score diagnosis suggests Bradley did not keep the ball down. Wild Thomas Keeling (1 IP 0 H 0 R 1 BB 1 K 2:0 GO:FO), who is on an early season audition for a place in folk rock band Holle and Williams, pitched well. T.J. Mittelstaedt (2-4 2B SB) had the only crooked number in the hit column for the 'Tees. T.J. has been sporting a thick (think Ryan Braun) OPS around .900 or north all season. Typically, only the cream-of-the-crop of hitting prospects make noise in Brevard County. Logan Schafer won a batting title. Taylor Green had a big year. Jon Lucroy hit 20 bombs. Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris were decent and, of course, impatient. The hitting conditions are one reason everyone was pretty enthused when Khris Davis and Brock Kjeldgaard went off last season. My belated point is that if Mittelstaedt can keep raking, he should be taken seriously as a big league caliber bat. Ejections: Brevard County Manatees Manager Joe Ayrault ejected by 1B umpire Roberto Ortiz (2nd) Game Log The ejection. Brevard County Bottom of the 2nd Shea Vucinich strikes out swinging, catcher Cameron Rupp to first baseman Jim Murphy. Adam Weisenburger singles on a ground ball to second baseman Albert Cartwright. Brevard wins again on walk-off single 04/27/2012 10:07 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/images/2012/04/27/8kL2MCFr.jpg Jimmy Nelson allowed one earned run in 7 2/3 innings on Friday. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - For the second night in a row, the Brevard County Manatees were victorious over the Tampa Yankees in their final at-bat. Shea Vucinich's walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the ninth gave Brevard a 3-2 win over Tampa on Friday night, in front of 3,726 fans at Space Coast Stadium. For the fourth game in a row, the Manatees (10-11) received a quality start from its pitching staff. Jimmy Nelson - in his third quality start of the young season - went 7 2/3 innings and allowed two runs, one of which was earned. He gave up two hits and walked three, while striking out six. Nelson (2-1, 1.76) kept the ball on the ground for his defense as he recorded 15 groundouts and just two flyouts. Brevard County gave Nelson some early run support as the 'Tees scored twice in the bottom of the second. Mike Walker led the inning off with a single to center and then Shawn Zarraga reached base on a hit by pitch. Vucinich would then double to left, to score Walker and move Zarraga to third. Zarraga came home for the second run on a Juan Sanchez sacrifice fly. Tampa (10-11) got one of those runs back in the fourth off of Nelson. Rob Segedin doubled to right with one out and then advanced to third on a ground out by Kyle Roller. Segedin would come home to score on a passed ball by Zarraga. The Yankees scored their second run in the sixth with some small ball as Segedin drove home Jose Toussen with two outs. Touseen had led the inning off with a walk, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and then got to third on a fly out. The Manatees had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth as T.J. Mittelstaedt singled to center with two outs and Juan Sanchez tried to score from second. He was gunned down by center fielder Eduardo Sosa as Sanchez tried to jar the ball loose by attempting to truck catcher Hector Rabago. Tampa's starting pitcher Nik Turley, who struck out five 'Tees, was lifted in the bottom of the ninth for reliever Branden Pinder. Pinder forced Cody Hawn to ground out to start the inning, but then ran into some trouble. Miguel Velaquez drove a ball deep into the left center gap and it looked to be a walk-off homer but Tampa's Ramon Flores chased it down but could not make the catch against the wall as Velazquez reached on with a double. Mike Walker was then intentionally walked to get to Zarraga. With Zarraga batting, a wild pitch by Pinder moved Walker and Velazquez to second and third, respectively. Tampa decided to go ahead and give Zarraga a free pass to set up a possible force at home and possible double play ball. The Yankees also brought in a fifth infielder as Vucinich stepped to the plate. Vucinich hit a rocket down the third base line, scoring Velazquez and give the Manatees their second consecutive walk-off win. He was 2-for-3 with two RBI on Friday night. Mittelstaedt also had two hits. Casey Medlen earned his second win of the season, in relief of Nelson as he threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out three. Brevard County will now welcome the Clearwater Threshers (9-10) for a three-game series, beginning on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. The Manatees were swept in a three-game set earlier in the week at Clearwater. Lefty Jed Bradley (2-1, 1.50) is set to take the mound for the Manatees on Saturday night in the series opener. In Bradley's last outing - which was against Clearwater - he allowed seven runs (four earned) in five innings of work. The Threshers will send Perci Garner (0-1, 3.95) to the mound. He gave up four runs in 3 2/3 innings of work to the 'Tees this past Monday. Box Score Ho-hum, another walk-off. Tonight's hero was Shea Vucinich, but it was a group effort in the 9th. Brevard County Bottom of the 9th Pitcher Change: Branden Pinder replaces Nik Turley. Cody Hawn grounds out, second baseman Kelvin Castro to first baseman Kyle Roller. Miguel Velazquez doubles (5) on a line drive to left fielder Ramon Flores. Branden Pinder intentionally walks Michael Walker. With Shawn Zarraga batting, wild pitch by Branden Pinder, Miguel Velazquez to 3rd. Michael Walker to 2nd. Branden Pinder intentionally walks Shawn Zarraga. Shea Vucinich singles on a ground ball to left fielder Ramon Flores. Miguel Velazquez scores. Michael Walker to 3rd. Shawn Zarraga to 2nd. Vucinich (also walked) and T.J. Mittelstaedt each had 2 hits. Mike Walker was 1-3 with a IBB. Mittelstaedt's .273 average represents the high water mark for Manatee starting lineup. Nick Shaw was MIA. Early season stud Jimmy Nelson was overwhelming again for the opposing hitters. Final line: 7 2/3 IP 2 H 2 R 1 ER 3 BB 6 K 15:2 GO:FO. I cannot recall another game where one pitcher recorded 15 or more ground ball outs. Games like this are becoming commonplace for the BC staff. Casey Medlen (1 1/3 IP 3 K) continued the flame-throwing domination swindling the W along the way. Game Log This represents the first fly ball out of the game for Jimmy J. Tampa Top of the 5th Eduardo Sosa called out on strikes. Hector Rabago grounds out, shortstop Juan Sanchez to first baseman Cody Hawn. Garrison Lassiter flies out to left fielder T. J. Mittelstaedt.

Gagnon was throwing a tick or two harder than Quezada at his peak. Both were sitting in the low-90's via the Miller Park scoreboard, mostly 91 for Gagnon and 90 for Quezada. Lots of off-speed for Gagnon at times including at least one curve ball resulting in a backwards K.. I will expand on this a bit more tomorrow. Off to write about "Downhill Thunder".

'Tees top Tampa in 11 to end skid 04/26/2012 11:18 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/images/2012/04/26/fdEvsEJr.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out five on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. He did not factor in the decision though as Brevard County snapped a seven-game losing streak by beating the Tampa Yankees, 2-1 in 11 innings. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees ended a seven-game losing streak on Thursday night as they defeated the Tampa Yankees, 2-1 in 11 innings at Space Coast Stadium. Mike Walker singled to center with two outs in the 11th to drive in Cody Hawn for the game-winning run. Once again, the Manatees (9-11) received a quality start from its pitching staff. 2011 first round draft pick Taylor Jungmann (2-2, 2.45) threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed just three hits and a walk, while striking out five. The 'Tees took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Franklin Romero Jr. drove in Adam Weisenburger on a sacrifice fly to center. Weisenburger reached with a one-out triple. It remained a 1-0 game until the top of the ninth. With one out and runners on second and third, Tampa's JR Murphy singled to left off of Alan Williams to score Rob Segedin and tie the game. The runner on second - pinch runner Jose Toussen - tried to score on left fielder T.J. Mittelstaedt, who threw the ball in and Weisenburger cut it off and tossed it to Williams at home to tag Toussen out to keep it a tie game. In the top of the tenth, the Yankees (10-10) led off the inning with a Tyson Blaser single to left. Brevard County's infield then came in for the expected bunt attempt and that's what happened as Garrison Lassiter tried to lay down a bunt. But his attempt popped into the air and third baseman Mike Walker charged in and made a diving catch and was able to double up Blaser off of first. Brevard County had a good chance to win it in the bottom of the tenth as Shea Vucinich reached on a one-out walk and proceeded to steal both second and third base. Weisenburger was then hit by pitch to put runners at the corners with two outs. Romero Jr. then came up and gave a pitch a ride to right field but it was caught for the third out. With two outs in the bottom of the 11th, Brevard County once again began a rally as Hawn and Miguel Velazquez reached on back-to-back two-out singles. Mike Walker then stepped in and singled up the middle to score Hawn from second and end the 'Tees seven-game losing streak. For the 'Tees out of the bullpen, Greg Holle threw a perfect 1 1/3 innings following Jungmann. Williams was charged with a blown save as he allowed the game-tying run in his two innings of work. Brian Garman was credited with the win as he pitched a scoreless 11th, striking out two. Offensively, Velazquez and Weisenburger had two hits each. Brevard County will look to take the series as they take on Tampa on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. in the finale of this three-game set. Jimmy Nelson (2-1, 1.96) will toe the rubber for the 'Tees and Tampa will send Nik Turley (2-0, 1.93) to the hill. Both Nelson and Turley rank towards the top of the Florida State League in strikeouts. Nelson has fanned 25 so far this season in 23 innings of work. Turley has punched out 27 batters in 23 1/3 innings.

Sounds' Losing Skid Hits 10 With 7-1 Loss In Iowa 04/26/2012 8:09 PM ET Nashville Sounds DES MOINES, Iowa - The Nashville Sounds walked a season-high eight batters in an 8-1 loss to the division-rival Iowa Cubs on Thursday night at Principal Park in the opener of a four-game series. The defeat extended Nashville's losing streak to 10 games, which is its longest since the Sounds joined the Pacific Coast League in 1998. Nashville's 4-17 record is the worst among the 30 Triple-A clubs in 2012 and is the worst in club history through 21 games of action. In his second start of the season, former Sound and current Cubs starter Frankie De La Cruz (1-1) came away with the victory after allowing one run on four hits and three walks in five innings pitched. The Sounds scored their only run in the top of the first inning. Outfielder Caleb Gindl worked a two-out walk from De La Cruz and moved to second base on a single from outfielder Brooks Conrad. Gindl would then come home to score the club's run on an RBI double from third baseman Taylor Green (2-for-4). The lead didn't last long, as Iowa scored three runs on starting pitcher Wily Peralta in the home half of the first. With the bases loaded and two outs, Adrian Cardenas crushed a three-run double to center field. Two of the three scoring baserunners reached base via walk. (So Wily calmed down after this. Too bad Wily didn't squirm out of it.) Iowa loaded the bases again in the next inning on Peralta and extended the lead to 5-1. After a single and two walks allowed, Iowa first baseman Anthony Rizzo lined a two-out, two-run single to center field. (More 2-out damage off Peralta. Walks kill.) Iowa tacked on another run in the sixth for a 6-1 advantage. Reliever Donovan Hand began the sixth with singles to the first two batters to put runners on the corners with no outs. Alfredo Amezaga then hit a soft grounder to shortstop that brought home Cardenas. The Cubs scored their final of the game in the seventh. Left-handed reliever Dan Meadows walked three batters in the frame, including a based-loaded free pass to Cardenas for his fourth RBI of the night. In his first start since rejoining the Sounds after making his Major League debut, Peralta (0-2) walked four and surrendered five runs on a couple of two-out hits in the first two frames. The 22-year old also fanned five in five innings while retiring the final 10 batters he faced in the loss. (Nice) Hand gave up one run on two hits in one frame. Meadows finished the game for the Sounds, giving up one run on one hit with four walks in two innings. The Sounds and division-rival Cubs will play the second game of a four-game series at 7:05 pm CT on Friday night. Right-hander Mike Fiers (0-2, 6.23) will toe the rubber against Iowa righty Casey Coleman (2-1, 3.80). Box Score Wily Peralta was all 5's and 4's in his return start for Nashville. 5 IP 4 H 5 R 5 ER 4 BB 5 K. 8:2 GO:FO for Wily who also went 2-2 at the plate. Chalk it up to a hectic travel schedule. Unfortunately for the Sounds, Wily Peralta (2-2) was their best hitter on the night. Taylor Green did go 2-4 with two doubles. Logan Schafer doubled in four AB's. That is pretty much it. 2011 Nashville Sound Frankie De La Cruz pitched very effectively. 5 IP 4 H 1 R 1 ER 3 BB 1 K 6:3 G:FO Game Log Meh Get Thorny up here because this is ridiculous Gameday

Brevard County 2 Tampa (Yankees) 1 F/11 Box Score Walk it off, Brevard! Three 2-out singles in the 11th win it. Mike Walker (1-5) was the big hero knocking in Cody Hawn (1-5). The other 11th inning hit belonged to Miguel Velazquez (2-5 CS). C Adam Weisenburger (2-3 3B HBP) was the only other Manatee with multiple hits and the only Manatee with a XBH. Shea Vucinich stole two bases. T.J. Mittelstaedt went 0-5. The other run was scored via a Franklin Romero Jr (1-3) sac fly. Taylor Jungmann was very effective tonight. Final line: 6 2/3 IP 3 H 0 R 0 ER 1 BB 5 K 10:4 GO:FO. His season ERA crashed (in a good way) to 2.45. His peripherals can be nit-picked but so far he has been about as advertised. Keep up the great pitching, Taylor! A small thanks is owed from Taylor to Greg Holle who stranded a Jungmann runner. Holle went on to pitch a scoreless 8th. Alan Williams was next and didn't have his best stuff over two innings resulting in the blown save in the top of the 9th. Brian Garman pitched a nice inning with 2 K to pillage a win. 8:0 GO:FO for the 3 relievers tonight. Mittelstaedt committed his 3rd error of the season in his return game after two nights off. Game Log Four 1-2-3 innings for Jungmann tonight. Walker's walk-off Brevard County Bottom of the 11th Reggie Keen strikes out swinging. T. J. Mittelstaedt flies out to left fielder Ramon Flores. Cody Hawn singles on a fly ball to left fielder Ramon Flores. Miguel Velazquez singles on a ground ball to second baseman Kelvin Castro. Cody Hawn to 2nd. Michael Walker singles on a ground ball to center fielder Eduardo Sosa. Cody Hawn scores. Miguel Velazquez to 2nd.

Tedaldtada replied to TheCrew07's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
I think the Brewers are on the upswing in the International market. We sign the 3rd/4th tier guys with upside ad a few of them are showing progress. Maybe one day we will have ore payroll flexibility and we can splurge a little more. -

Tampa (Yankees) 7 Brevard County 2 Box Score A close game until late, the Manatee offense was, again, nearly sterile. C Shawn Zarraga was 1-3 with a BB. Cody Hawn was 1-3 with a 2B and BB. Nick Shaw was 1-2 with a 2B and a BB. Franklin Romero Jr had 2 hits from the 9-hole. Shaw actually left the game for a pinch hitter in the 7th. He was gunned at 3rd trying to stretch his double in his previous at-bat, but he did not come out for a few innings afterward. Hopefully he is okay. We also await news on T.J. Mittelstaedt's whereabouts. Recently added Brandon Williamson was very good in the start. 6 IP 4 H 2 R 1 ER 0 BB 3 K 5:9 GO:FO. Williamson retired the first 11 batters in order. I really do not know much a him as a prospect but if he keeps up the good work, I am sure we will learn much. The best prospect in the game for the Manatees, Brooks Hall, came in to pitch the 7th making his first appearance in 2012. He got nicked up a bit, but with an assumed tight pitch count, he wasn't really allowed to settle in. Final line: 1 2/3 IP 2 H 2 R 1 ER 1 BB 3 K 1:1 GO:FO. Hall was pretty good last year in WI considering he was likely a full 2 years below the median age in the Midwest League. Still, there is nothing dominant about his numbers (4.13 ERA .279 BAA 5.7 K/9). Methinks he needs to take another step stuff-wise to really put himself on the map. The lack of Manatee media coverage will not help shed light on the situation either. Casey Medlen let the game get out of hand in the end allowing an inherited Hall runner to score in the 8th, then allowing 3 more in the 9th. Game Log Hall's halves. Brevard County Bottom of the 7th Pitcher Change: Sean Black replaces Zachary Nuding. Franklin Romero Jr. pops out to third baseman Rob Segedin. Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Juan Sanchez replaces Nick Shaw. Juan Sanchez grounds out, pitcher Sean Black to first baseman Kyle Roller. Reggie Keen doubles (5) on a line drive to right fielder Shane Brown. Cody Hawn walks. Miguel Velazquez grounds into a force out, third baseman Rob Segedin to second baseman Kelvin Castro. Cody Hawn out at 2nd. Tampa Top of the 8th Juan Sanchez remains in the game as the shortstop. Kelvin Castro strikes out swinging. Rob Segedin walks. With Kyle Roller batting, Rob Segedin steals (2) 2nd base. Kyle Roller called out on strikes. Pitcher Change: Casey Medlen replaces Brooks Hall. JR Murphy singles on a ground ball to left fielder Miguel Velazquez. Rob Segedin scores. Eduardo Sosa doubles (4) on a ground ball to left fielder Miguel Velazquez. JR Murphy to 3rd. Tyson Blaser strikes out swinging. -

Isn't it just logical to expect more from people who make millions of dollars? I'm not sure why that is considered being bitter or being a perfectionist? So, after paying $30 for my ticket and $10 for parking and another $10 for food and beverage, I'm suppose to applaud a multi millionaire for hustling?? I'll aplaud the triple for what it means to the Brewers chances of winning, not because the MLB player that hit it hustled. Isn't he supposed to do that? It is not logical to me. And I was not trying to imply that he should be applauded for hustling. He should be applauded for the big-spot hit. The fact that he was hustling should be evidence that he actually does care, contrary to what some people are accusing him of. And for people to try to use this one play as some bit of proof that Aramis was a bad signing? That is illogical.
-
I think Burgos has a sub-fringy fastball. From our own 2009 Draft Pick Signing Thread.
-
Many perfectionists in this crowd. Maybe we should start a thread congratulating Aramis for hustling out the big triple on Monday night. Or we could congratulate him on the ball he smoked into the gap preceding his mental error. And bringing salary into the equation? It just sounds bitter.

Pitching Prospect Velocity Reports (Updated for 2012)
Tedaldtada replied to Tedaldtada's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Chris Mehring, in his Rattler Radio Blog, with a pretty exciting David Goforth paragraph (4/24/2012): "He was 94-96 with a few 98s in there. I saw a 100 on the scoreboard after one pitch. It was low and away and Rafael Neda did a nice job stopping it. I cannot say that the actual velocity was 100, I can only say that I saw 100 on the scoreboard." For those keeping track, this reading was via the South Bend scoreboard gun. Hardly official, but the report is still appreciated in these parts. Thanks, Chris! More on David Goforth (4/24/2012): ""We got the bats going and faced a pretty good arm there," Hawks manager Mark Haley said. "He was throwing 98 (mph) -- you don't see guys throwing 98 a whole lot. -
Clearwater (Mets) 1 Brevard County 0 Burgos loses no-hitter in 9th as 'Tees fall to Threshers 04/24/2012 9:50 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees CLEARWATER, Fla. - Brevard County Manatees starting pitcher Hiram Burgos threw eight no-hit innings but was unable to complete the feat as the 'Tees fell victim to a walk-off hit to the Clearwater Threshers in a 1-0 loss on Tuesday night at Bright House Field. Burgos was perfect through his first six innings as he struck out six batters. His perfect game would be broken up in the bottom of the seventh with a lead-off walk to Peter Lavin. Burgos finished the rest of the seventh unscathed and then took his no-hitter into the bottom of the ninth. Unfortunately for Burgos, Brevard County's bats were unable to give him any run support. The Manatees (8-10) scattered five hits and had their best chance for a run in the seventh. Cody Hawn and Miguel Velazquez led the inning off with back-to-back singles. Mike Walker would then strike out swinging and then Hawn and Velazquez would move to second and third, respectfully, on a ground out by Shawn Zarraga. But with two outs and two men in scoring position, Scott Krieger grounded out to third to end the inning. With the game knotted in a scoreless tie, it went to the bottom of the ninth with Burgos trying to get the 'Tees to extra innings. The no-hitter would be broken up by the first batter of the inning as D'Arby Myers doubled to left field. Myers would move up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt by Edgar Duran and just like that not only was the no-hitter over, but the Manatees were on the verge of their sixth straight loss. Burgos was then lifted for reliever Brian Garman who gave up a single to the first batter he faced - Lavin - which scored Myers and gave Clearwater (7-9) a 1-0 victory. So despite throwing eight innings of no-hit ball, Burgos was saddled with the tough-luck loss. The final line on Burgos (0-1, 1.27) was eight-plus innings, one hit, one run, one walk and nine strikeouts. With the loss, Brevard County finished 0-6 on its six-game road trip and the Manatees' record drops to 8-10. The 'Tees will look to get back on the winning track as they return home to Space Coast Stadium to begin a six-game home stand, starting on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. against the Tampa Yankees (9-9). The Manatees are scheduled to send righty Brooks Hall (!) to the hill for his first start of the 2012 season. The Yankees will counter with Zachary Nuding (1-0, 0.00). Box Score Sorry BC hitters, this space is Hiram Burgos (24) only zone tonight. What a fantastic game for Hiram. His line: 8 IP 1 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB 9 K 9:3 GO:FO His season line as a starter: 3 starts 19 2/3 IP 7 H 3 R 3 ER 4 BB 21 K 0 HR. Hitters were batting .133 against him going into the night, so a 1-25 night (.040) will help that. Going into today, Hiram's BABIP against was .182, so that is going to go down too. Hitters seemingly are making poor contact. Or just are very unlucky. This is the second start Burgos has gone deep with a no-no this season. Game logs from 2011 show nothing this good from Hiram, especially towards the end of the season. In 2010, Burgos posted some very impressive starts when he was pitching for the T-Rats. http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/beth/sports/m-basebl/auto_action/2672790.jpeg A night worthy of a picture We need a current scouting report on what is working for Hiram, because the raw numbers are dominant and he is repeating A+ as an older prospect. Omaha (Royals) 5 Nashville 3 Box Score Caleb Gindl's shot was opposite field, always a good indicator of a respectable power ceiling of a hitter. Hainley (pronounced "Hine Lee") Statia had two hits. Eric Farris, in LF again, went 1-3 with a 2B. The Storm Chaser opposing starter, Mike Montgomery, has a decent pedigree but has struggled a bit since his prospect pinnacle in early 2010. The pitchers were not the best. Josh Butler, started, and apparently injured himself along the way. Amaury Rivas (1.38 ERA) was nicked up for a run. Victor Garate was hittable. Juan Perez (1.80 ERA) finished without allowing further damage to the talented Triple-A Royals. Cleanup hitter 1B Erick Almonte (1-3 BB) committed his 3rd error. Game Log Gunned Nashville Top of the 4th Caleb Gindl homers (3) on a fly ball to left field. Erick Almonte grounds out, third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff to first baseman Clint Robinson.
