  1. Manatees drop third straight in Monday matinee 05/07/2012 1:49 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees JUPITER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees dropped their third consecutive game as they fell 6-2 to the Palm Beach Cardinals on Monday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium. Manatees starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson (2-2, 2.45) went just four innings and allowed five runs - four earned - on nine hits. He walked one and struck out six. The Cardinals' big inning came in the third when Palm Beach (16-15) plated three runs. They scored two runs via a throwing error by Nelson on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Starlin Rodriguez. Brevard County's bullpen fared better as both Eric Arnett and Brandon Kintzler threw a scoreless inning each, while Connor Whalen allowed one run in two innings but the damage had already been done. The Manatees (13-18) scored their only runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. The runs in each inning came on RBI groundouts. In the seventh, Cody Hawn led off the inning with a double and two batters later he was driven in by Mike Walker on a groundout. In the eighth, Nick Shaw led the frame off with a walk and then Miguel Velazquez doubled to put runners at second and third. T.J. Mittelstaedt then grounded out to bring home Shaw. Monday's loss ends a seven-game road trip for Brevard County, which saw the 'Tees go 2-5. The Manatees return home on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m., to open a four-game set with the St. Lucie Mets, who own the best record in the Florida State League at 25-6. 2011 first round draft pick Jed Bradley (3-2, 3.34) will take the mound for the Manatees in Tuesday's series opener. The Mets will send Erik Goeddel (1-0, 0.75) to the hill. Box Score Jimmy Nelson was not sharp today as he gave up 9 hits in just 4 innings. He did K 6 to only 1 BB so his stuff was working at times. He did not help himself when he committed a throwing error on a bunt attempt. Eric Arnett (1 IP 1 K), Brandon Kinzler (1 IP 2 K) and Connor Whalen (2 IP 1 ER 3 K) finished the game admirably. Opposing pitcher Carlos Martinez was as advertised. Martinez did peg three Brevard batters, and unfortunately, Cole Hamels was not there to keep the game in order. Mike Walker (2-4) was the only multi-hit hitter. Nick Shaw was 0-2 with 2 BB. Just about a month away from draft day. Hopefully we restock the system's bat coffers. Game Log Nelson's troubles. 2. Excuse me, MH, if you already posted this. Sands robs Gindl. The Dodger bullpen occupant sure thought it was great.
  3. Cardinals Rally Again, Clip Manatees, 6-5 05/06/2012 8:37 PM ET By Juan Dorado/ Palm Beach Cardinals The Palm Beach Cardinals (15-15) came from behind for the second night in a row to stun the Brevard County Manatees (13-17), 6-5 in 11 innings. The Cardinals got on the board early, as Mike O'Neill reached on error and Ronny Gil singled behind him to make to put two runners on base. After a passed ball, Starlin Rodriguez ground out to bring in O' Neill. However, the Cardinals could not get another run as they stranded Gil. After the inning, runs were tough to come by as Taylor Jungmann and Kevin Siegriest went scoreless until the fifth. In the top of the fifth, the Manatees went off and scored five runs on four hits. His control that had been flawless all game abounded him in the frame, as walked and hit a batter. Nick Shaw delivered a two-run single, while T.J. Mittelstaedt delivered the big blow with a bases clearing double to make it 5-1. (Uhhhhh, no.) The game looked at of reach, as Taylor Jungmann was coasting through the order, giving up one hit through six innings. However, in the seventh the Cardinals rallied to put three on the board as Alan Ahmady delivered with a bases clearing double over the left fielder's head. The Cardinals entered the ninth inning down by a run, and for the second night in a row they delivered as Chris Edmondson scored on a wild pitch to knot it up at 5-5. In the bottom of the 11th, the Cardinals scored the game-winner on an RBI single by Jonathan Rodriguez. After two out walks to Niko Vasquez and Geoff Klein, Rodriguez came in with a chance to win it and delivered with a single to left. The Cardinals were led by Alan Ahmady who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, while Chris Edmondson added two hits. Dean Kiekhefer recorded the victory with his two solid innings from the pen. The Cardinals finish the home stand tomorrow morning as they take on the Brevard County Manatees at 10:35 p.m. Carlos Martinez will take the ball as he will face Jimmy Nelson. 4. Manatees topped by Cardinals in 11 innings 05/06/2012 9:10 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees JUPITER, Fla. -The Brevard County Manatees blew their second consecutive ninth inning lead as they fell 6-5 to the Palm Beach Cardinals in 11 innings at Roger Dean Stadium on Sunday night. Up 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Manatees' closer Casey Medlen came in to try and shut the door on the Cardinals. He allowed a lead-off single to Chris Edmondson and then walked Niko Vasquez to put two on with no outs. Geoffrey Klein then grounded into a double play to put Edmondson on third with two outs. Medlen then faced off with Jonathan Rodriguez and with Rodriguez at the plate, Medlen threw a wild pitch that allowed Edmondson to score and tie the game at 5-5. It was Medlen's first blown save of the season. In the top of the 11th, Brevard County (13-17) had Mike Walker on second with two outs as Franklin Romero Jr. singled to right field. Walker tried to score from second on the hit, but was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Alan Ahmady. Thomas Keeling relieved Medlen in the 11th and got two quick outs, but then allowed back-to-back walks to Niko Vasquez and Klein to put two on with two out. Vance Albitz pinch ran for Vasquez at second and scored as the next batter, Jonathan Rodriguez singled to left for the game-winning hit. Down 1-0 in the fifth inning, the Manatees put together a big inning in the fifth as they scored five runs off of Palm Beach (15-15) starter Kevin Siegrist. Nick Shaw drove in two with a single and Cody Hawn had a bases-clearing double to drive in three more. With that two-RBI single in the fifth, Shaw has now reached base in 22 consecutive games; while Hawn went 3-for-5 on the night. The Cardinals cut the lead to 5-4 as Ahmady had a two-out, three-run double off of Brevard County starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann. Jungmann (2-3, 2.93) allowed four runs - three earned - in 6 2/3 innings of work. He allowed just three hits, while walking two and striking out five Palm Beach hitters. The Manatees will look to earn a spilt in their four-game set with the Cardinals as the two teams close out the series on Monday morning at 10:35 a.m. Jimmy Nelson (2-1, 1.73) will toe the rubber for Brevard County in hopes of ending the 'Tees two-game skid. Nelson is currently second in the Florida State League in strikeouts as he has fanned 39 in 36 1/3 innings of work. Palm Beach, looking for the series win, will send Carlos Martinez to the mound. Martinez (1-1, 2.45) was originally slated to pitch Sunday, but will take the hill on Monday. He pitched in the 2011 All-Star Futures Game. Palm Beach 6 Brevard County 5 F/11 Box Score Taylor Jungmann was cruising through a fantastic start until the 7th inning. Taylor loaded the bases and then gave up a 2-out double. Final line: 6 2/3 IP 3 H 4 R 3 ER 2 BB 5 K 1 HBP 12:1 GO:FO. Taylor has been consistently good all season. Greg Holle spared Jungmann of further damage by stranding his runner. Casey Medlen blew the save and Wild Thomas Keeling gave up the walk-off in the 11th. Cody Hawn (3-5 2B) had his weekly big game. Shea Vucinich had two more hits. He is red-hot right now. Nick Shaw (1-4 BB) keeps chugging along. Shaw did commit his 7th error. Game Log
  5. Sounds Knock Off Isotopes, 4-3, On Sunday Afternoon 05/06/2012 7:10 PM ET Nashville Sounds ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nashville Sounds edged Albuquerque, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park to snap a three-game losing streak. First baseman Sean Halton enjoyed a solid day at the dish for the Sounds, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Eric Farris and Hainley Statia added two-hit efforts for Nashville in the win. The Sounds (9-20) got onto the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Halton ripped an RBI double to the left-center wall off Albuquerque starter Michael Antonini to plate Statia, who preceded him by drawing a walk. Albuquerque answered in the bottom of the frame, knotting the contest at 1-1. Antonini reached on a one-out infield single then raced around the basepaths with the tying score on Elian Herrera's triple to right off Nashville right-hander Wily Peralta. In the next at-bat, Sounds third baseman Erick Almonte kept it a tie game as he deftly snared a grounder off the bat of Ivan De Jesus, Jr. and fired to the plate to retire Herrera as he attempted to score the go-ahead run. Nashville jumped back in front in the fifth as Farris' speed on the basepaths paid off for the visitors. After the Sounds' second baseman drew a one-out walk, he advanced to second on an Antonini balk during a stolen base attempt, moved to third on a Jordan Brown flyout to center, and hustled home on a wild pitch to stake the visitors to a 2-1 advantage. Once again, the Isotopes had an immediate answer for a Sounds rally and another solid Nashville defensive play prohibited Albuquerque from taking a lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Baisley greeted Sounds reliever Donovan Hand with a single to center and moved to second on a one-out Jerry Sands single. After Hand struck out Tim Federowicz for the second out, Nashville manager Mike Guerrero summoned Daniel Meadows from the bullpen to face Matt Angle, who ripped a double to left to bring home Baisley with the tying run. Sands also attempted to score on the play but was gunned down at the plate on a bang-bang play following an outstanding relay from Brown to Statia to Maldonado. Herrera (2-for-3) staked Albuquerque to its first lead of the afternoon in the sixth by belting a one-out solo homer to left off Meadows. The infielder's second longball of the year gave the Isotopes a 3-2 advantage. The back-and-forth scoring continued as the Sounds took their third lead of the afternoon with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh against the Albuquerque bullpen. With runners on first and second, Brown lifted an RBI double to center off Derrick Loop to bring home Schafer with the tying run. Pinch-hitter Jeff Bianchi, making his Sounds debut, followed with a sacrifice fly to center to greet new reliever Ryan Tucker and plate Farris with the go-ahead run. The Nashville bullpen did a solid job of working out of jams and protecting the lead in the late innings. After former Sound Luis Cruz reached third with only one out in the seventh, left-hander Juan Perez struck out Federowicz and Angle in succession to escape the jam unscathed. In the eighth, Jim Henderson inherited a runner on second and one out and kept Albuquerque off the board. Henderson closed out the victory with a perfect ninth and recorded the final five outs overall to nail down his first save of the season. The right-hander has not allowed a run in his 15 2/3 innings of work this season. Johnnie Lowe (2-0) picked up his second victory for Nashville after retiring the lone batter he faced in the contest. Loop (2-1) was charged with the loss for Albuquerque after suffering a blown save, allowing two runs in just one-third of an inning of action. Peralta took a no-decision for the Sounds after throwing a season-high 92 pitches in just four innings of action, allowing one run on four hits. The right-hander walked a season-high five batters and struck out five in his outing, lowering his season ERA to 3.55 with the effort. Antonini, who left the game in line for a victory, also did not factor in the decision despite a quality start for the 'Topes. The southpaw allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six in his six frames. The teams wrap up the series with a 1:05 p.m. CT finale on Monday afternoon. Right-hander Brian Baker (1-1, 6.27) will make the start for Nashville to face Albuquerque right-hander Mike Parisi (1-1, 2.25). It is time for Caleb Gindl to step up and become the run producer for this team. He is currently batting .184. Maybe some reinforcements from AA will help. A shade over 13,000 people attended this game. That surprised me. The Isotopes is one of my personal favorite team names. Game Log Rogers had 4 perfect innings on the night. 8. 'Tees blow four run lead, fall 8-7 to Cards 05/05/2012 9:53 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees JUPITER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees blew a four run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning as they fell 8-7 to the Palm Beach Cardinals on Saturday night at Roger Dean Stadium. It was the 'Tees first loss this season while leading after eight innings. Brevard County (13-16) was up 7-3 going into the bottom of the ninth inning but allowed the Cardinals to score five runs, all with two outs. In the ninth, the combination of Stosh Wawrzasek and Alan Williams threw 2/3 of an inning and allowed five runs on five hits, while walking two. The game-winning hit was a two-run single by Niko Vasquez to complete the Palm Beach (14-15) comeback. For Williams it was his fourth blown save of the season. The Manatees took a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a two-run homer by Mike Walker. It was his second homer in as many nights and he went 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored on Saturday. The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Luis De La Cruz RBI single and a RBI groundout by Mike O'Neill off of Manatees' starter Brandon Williamson. Williamson (0-1, 4.85) went just four innings and allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits, while walking two and striking out four. With the game tied 3-3, the Manatees plated three in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead. Nick Shaw's two-run single drove in both Adam Weisenberger and Franklin Romero Jr. Cody Hawn then drove in Shaw with a two-out double. Shaw was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored on the night. He also extended his streak of reaching base in consecutive games to 21. The 'Tees added an insurance run in the eighth as Shaw drove in Walker with a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-3 game. Brooks Hall threw four shutout innings in relief of Williamson as he allowed just two hits and fanned three. Both Weisenburger and Shea Vucinich had multi-hit nights as Weisenburger was 3-for-3 and Vucinich went 2-for-4. Brevard County racked up 14 hits, but they went just 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. The Manatees will look to get back on track as they square off again with the Cardinals on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. 2011 first round draft pick Taylor Jungmann (2-3, 2.72) will take the mound for Brevard County, while Palm Beach will send Carlos Martinez (1-1, 2.45) to the hill. Martinez played in the 2011 All-Star Futures Game. Box Score Good lord, that is a terrible way to lose. In my HS ball days, I experienced this sort of thing on both sides. Talk about a range of emotions on one field. Shake it off boys! Brooks Hall got four very good innings tonight. 4 IP 2 H 0 R 0 BB 3 K 5:4 GO:FO I mentioned yesterday that Mike Walker (4-5 2B HR) could use a hot week. His owns one of the better hitting lines on the team playing in about 1/3 of the games. With Zarraga nursing a hand injury, Adam may have his proverbial shot to make some noise. Nick Shaw stayed streaking with a 2-4 night. Walker did commit his 5th error at 3B. Game Log Suffer through it. You'll be better for it. 10. Albuquerque Silences Sounds, 8-1, In Opener 05/04/2012 11:06 PM ET Nashville Sounds ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Starting pitcher Stephen Fife threw seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball as the Nashville Sounds dropped an 8-1 defeat to the Albuquerque Isotopes on Friday night in the opener of a four-game series at Isotopes Park. Holding the Sounds to one hit through the first five innings and retiring a stretch of 11 straight at one point in the contest, Fife (3-2) set a season-high with seven strikeouts for the victory and extended his scoreless streak to 13 innings over his last two starts. Albuquerque first baseman Jeff Baisley was a triple short of the cycle, going 4-for-4 with a homer and two doubles while scoring three and driving in two runs. The seven-run defeat is Nashville's (8-19) largest of the season, and also drops the team into a tie with the 2008 Sounds with worst record in club history through 27 games of action. Third baseman Taylor Green compiled his team-leading eighth multi-hit contest with a 2-for-4 effort while also extending his hitting streak to a season-high five games, the longest active on the club. The Isotopes scored three unearned runs against Nashville starter Seth McClung in the bottom of the second after sending eight batters to the dish. The rally began after a two-base throwing error from Green that allowed Scott Van Slyke to reach. Baisley then doubled down the right field line for the first run and later scored as former Sound Luis Cruz crushed an RBI two-bagger off the right field wall. In the ensuing at-bat, Albuquerque starting pitcher Stephen Fife singled up the middle for the third run. The deficit climbed to 5-0 in the next frame as Nashville committed its second error of the contest that resulted in two more unearned runs. Josh Fields singled and moved to third from another double from Baisley, a broken-bat bloop to left field. Albuquerque catcher Tim Federowicz then lined an infield ball off of first baseman Jordan Brown that let both runners score. Back-to-back jacks from Van Slyke and Baisley made it 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth and removed McClung from the contest. After a one-out walk to Josh Fields, Van Slyke unloaded his seventh homer of the season, a two-run line drive over the left field wall and into the Albuquerque bullpen. Baisley's fourth homer was a towering shot down the left field line. The last back-to-back homers against the Sounds came from Memphis' Matt Carpenter and Andrew Brown on September 2, 2011 at AutoZone Park. The Sounds busted up the shutout with their only run in the bottom of the eighth inning against reliever Scott Rice. Outfielder Logan Schafer led off the inning with a stand-up triple to deep center field and scored on the next pitch as second baseman Eric Farris hit a sacrifice fly to center. McClung (0-3) gave up eight runs (three earned) on eight hits (both season highs) while fanning three in 4 1/3 innings. The Nashville bullpen shutdown the Albuquerque offense, beginning with left-handed reliever Victor Garate's 1 2/3 shutout innings with two strikeouts. Righty Jim Henderson finished the game with two scoreless innings, which extended his scoreless streak to a season-high 14 innings to open the year. The Sounds and Isotopes continue their series at 8:05 pm CT on Saturday evening at Isotopes Park. Nashville right-hander Mark Rogers (0-2, 4.76) takes the mound to face Albuquerque right John Ely (2-2, 5.06). Box Score So, did you guys see that WI box score summary yet? My sarcasm is meant to suggest that there is not much meat on the bone regarding this game. Logan Schafer (1-4 3B BB), Caleb Gindl (1-4 2B) and 3B Taylor Green (2-4 2B) had XBH's. Sean Halton had a pinch hit single. On the pitching side, Jim Henderson has been on point all season. (See the game story) Game Log 2-out almost rally. 11. Brevard blanks Palm Beach 05/04/2012 9:38 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees JUPITER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees recorded their fifth shutout of the season as they blanked the Palm Beach Cardinals, 3-0 on Friday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Manatees starting pitcher Hiram Burgos (2-1, 0.79) threw seven shutout innings as he allowed six hits and a walk, while striking out eight. Burgos has allowed just one run in his last 25 innings of work and has not allowed a run in three of his five starts this season. Brandon Kintzler, who is on a rehab assignment from Milwaukee, threw a scoreless eighth inning and Casey Medlen earned his fifth save of the season after throwing a scoreless ninth. The game was scoreless until the fifth inning as Nick Shaw led the frame off with his sixth double of the season. The double marked the 20th consecutive game in which Shaw has reached base. Reggie Keen then singled to center to put runners on the corners. Keen then stole second and after a T.J. Mittelstaedt strikeout, Cody Hawn grounded out to second to score Shaw and give the 'Tees a 1-0 lead. Keen was 3-for-5 on the night and stole two bases. He has now reached base in 13 straight games. In the eighth inning, Brevard County (13-15) received a couple of insurance runs as Mike Walker hit a two-run home run, his third of the season. Manatees' catcher Shawn Zarraga left the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with an apparent hand injury. Brevard County will go for its third win in a row on Saturday as they continue their four-game set with Palm Beach (13-15) at 6:35 p.m. Brandon Williamson (0-1, 5.00) will toe the rubber for the Manatees, while the Cardinals will send Drew Benes (1-2, 4.29) to the mound. Box Score Hiram Burgos is putting on a clinic in the FSL. The line: 7 IP 6 H 0 R 1 BB 8 K 6:2 GO:FO 1 Pickoff. One of Hiram's top qualities is his control. Baseball America listed Burgos as having the best control in the system after the 2010 season. BF poster, and Link Report Grandmaster, Sessile Fielder remembers Burgos as a mid-80's to high-80's FB guy when he was with the T-Rats. His pre-draft bio was slightly more optimistic. One thing is for certain, Burgos should be moving to AA soon. Brandon Kinzler (2 K) and Casey Medlen (1 K) finished off the shutout with a clean inning each. SS Nick Shaw (1-5 2B) has a 20 game on-base streak going. Shaw has 7 BB and 7 H in his last 10 games. 3B Mike Walker (1-2 HR 2 BB) was the man today. He needs a hot week to factor into the mid-season All-star discussion. Reggie Keen (3-5 2 SB) was a literal hit in the second spot in the order. 12. Omaha (Royals) 3 Nashville 1 Box Score Vin Mazzaro and Mike Fiers dueled to start this game. Mazzaro, once seen as a potential #2-3 starting pitcher, is trying to earn himself a spot in the MLB rotation. He made a strong case today. Fiers had one of his better starts. 6 IP 6 H 1 R 1 ER 2 BB 4 K 7:5 GO:FO. Amaury Rivas was nicked up for the deciding runs. The only XBH belonged to Caleb Gindl (1-3 2B). (Audio attached to link) The big news is that Taylor Green (1-3) started at 1B. At the same time, this is terrible news for Sean Halton's (DNP) 2012 big league prospects. 13. Sounds Lose Series Finale To Omaha, 3-1 05/03/2012 11:43 PM ET Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Sounds' attempt to record a sweep of division-leading Omaha was thwarted as on Thursday evening as Nashville fell 3-1 to the Storm Chasers at Greer Stadium. Nashville (8-18) took three of the four during the series, however, and have won four of their last five contests as they prepare to embark upon their third road trip of the season. Omaha right-hander Vin Mazzaro (1-0) held the Sounds to one run on five hits while striking out seven in seven innings to record his first victory. Francisley Bueno took over and closed out the contest with a pair of hitless frames, striking out four, to close out the win and earn his second save. Nashville did not have an at-bat with a runner in scoring position all evening and left only one runner on base as Omaha hurlers recorded 11 strikeouts and the Storm Chasers' defense turned a pair of double plays. The Sounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when designated hitter Erick Almonte drew a leadoff walk from Mazzaro and scored when Caleb Gindl followed with an RBI double that struck the base of the wall in center field. Gindl was out on a rundown on the play, however, after taking too wide a turn past second. The visitors knotted the game in the top of the fourth when first baseman Clint Robinson's double to the left-center wall plated Johnny Giavotella, who had opened the frame by drawing a walk from Sounds starter Mike Fiers. Fiers turned in his second consecutive quality start for the Sounds but took another no-decision . The right-hander allowed only one run on six hits over six innings to lower his ERA to 3.99 on the year. He deftly worked out of second and third, one-out jams in scoreless fashion twice in the contest to keep Nashville in the game. Omaha pulled in front, 3-1, in the seventh against Sounds reliever Amaury Rivas. Storm Chasers catcher Cody Clark drove the right-hander's second offering over the left field foul pole for his third home run of the season to put the visitors ahead. Later in the frame, Giavotella slammed an RBI double off the left field wall to drive in Derrick Robinson up the Omaha lead to two. Rivas (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Sounds after giving up two runs on five hits in his two innings of work. Like Fiers, he also successfully worked out of a jam in his second frame of action after placing runners on second and third with only one out. The Sounds travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico tomorrow to begin a four-game road series with an 8:05 p.m. contest. Right-hander Seth McClung (0-2, 8.10) mans the bump for Nashville and will face Isotopes right-hander Stephen Fife (2-2, 7.25).
  14. Brevard County 12 Tampa (Yankees) 6 Box Score Bust out hitters! The only weak spot on the night was the base running. Yankee catcher J.R. Murphy nailed everyone who attempted a steal. T.J. Mittelstaedt exacted revenge by nailing Murphy at 3rd from the OF. The seven 2-out RBI were the difference for the 'Tees. Cody Hawn (2-4 HR) and Shea Vucinich (3-5 HR) homered in the same inning. T.J Mittelstaedt (2-4 3B BB) hit his fourth 3B on the year. Mike Walker (1-5 2B) and Nick Shaw (2-4 2B 2 BB) had the other XBH's. Jed Bradley's night was chronicled here. Sounds like he was impressive but unlucky. The secondary offerings provided the most 'wow' factor while the fastball command was commended. Three relievers from a deep bullpen held off the Tampa team. Casey Medlen was the only one to finish a clean inning as Greg Holle and Eric Arnett each gave back a run. Game Log Three 4-packs. 15. Brevard's bats come alive to double up Yanks 05/03/2012 2:29 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees TAMPA, Fla. -The Brevard County Manatees' bats came alive to the tune of a season-high 12 runs as they doubled up the Tampa Yankees, 12-6 on Thursday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. The win snapped the Brevard's three-game losing streak as the 'Tees avoided a sweep at the hands of the Yankees. Every member of Brevard County's starting line-up either recorded a hit or scored a run as the Manatees scored four times in three separate innings. Five 'Tees had multi-hit games, with Shea Vucinich leading the way with a 3-for-5 afternoon. T.J. Mittelstaedt and Mike Walker each drove in three runs, while Cody Hawn drove in four. 2011 first round draft pick Jed Bradley (3-2, 3.34) gave up four runs in six innings of work, but earned his third win of the season. He allowed six hits, while walking two and striking out four. The Manatees (12-15) got on the board first with a big inning in the top of the third. Adam Weisenburger and Juan Sanchez led off the frame by drawing back-to-back walks and then Nick Shaw reached on a bunt single to load the bases. With that bunt single, Shaw reached base for the 19th consecutive game. Mittelstaedt then stepped up to the plate and cleared the bases with a three-run triple. Mittelstaedt would score one batter later as he was driven in on a Cody Hawn sacrifice fly as the Manatees took a 4-0 lead. A two-out RBI double by Tampa's Jose Mojica in the fifth cut Brevard's lead to 4-1 and the Yanks would tie the game with three runs in the sixth, with the big blow being a two-run triple by Neil Medchill. Brevard County answered right back in the top of the seventh thanks to a two-out three-run double by Walker and a RBI single by Reggie Keen, to give the 'Tees a 8-4 lead. Tampa (13-14) scratched a run across in the bottom of the seventh off of Greg Holle, but the Manatees once again answered with a big inning. A solo homer by Shea Vucinich and a three-run blast by Cody Hawn in the eighth gave Brevard County a 12-5 lead. Brevard County - which came into Thursday's game hitting just .192 with runners in scoring position - was 5-for-11 (.454) with runners in scoring position on Thursday afternoon. Five of the Manatees 13 hits went for extra bases and the 'Tees had seven RBI with two outs. The Manatees will continue their seven-game road trip with a four-game series against the Palm Beach Cardinals (13-14), beginning on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. This will be the first time this season that the 'Tees have faced a team from the South division. Brevard County will send Hiram Burgos (1-1, 0.99) to the hill. He has allowed just one earned run in his last 18 innings of work. Palm Beach will counter with southpaw Anthony Ferrara (1-1, 2.74).

  18. That is going back a bit. Nice job, CWH. I cannot figure out Khris Davis' role. Is he a starter? Has he been banged up? Why is his playing time so sporadic?
  19. As has been mentioned numerous times, he is getting work in while building his pitch count. They could have kept him in extended spring training but it appears they want him getting game experience.
  20. Tampa (Yankees) 3 Brevard County 2 Box Score Poor Brevard was walked-off on by the Tampa Yankees. Shawn Zarraga hit a 3B. T.J. Mittelstaedt (2-4 2 2B BB) was by far the best hitter on the night. Jimmy Nelson continues his early season success. What is really impressive is how Nelson has managed to improve significantly despite moving up a level. Nelson's ERA sits at 1.73, his BAA is well under .200 and he averages over one K per inning. Niceville, FL should be proud. Alan Williams blew the hold/save/whatever in the 7th. He issued 3 BB to just 1 K. His command has been off his last two appearances. Swing-man Brooks Hall enter mid-inning for Williams and left unscathed 4 outs later. 6 K in 5 2/3 IP for Hall this season. Wild Thomas Keeling started the extra frame and promptly hit a batter, gave up a hit and walked a guy amongst his three K's. 21. Sounds Walk Off Again Over Omaha, Win Fourth Straight 05/02/2012 12:55 PM ET Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Corey Patterson delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Sounds a 5-4 victory over the division-leading Omaha Storm Chasers on Wednesday afternoon at Greer Stadium. With two outs, second baseman Eric Farris reached on an infield single and hurried around the bases as Patterson lined his second double of the game to the wall in right center for the club's fourth straight victory. It was the league-leading fifth extra-inning contest for Nashville (8-17) and the club's 17th contest decided by two runs or less (5-12). Hot-hitting Brooks Conrad homered for the third straight game, which also extended his hitting streak to a team-high 10 games. The Storm Chasers batted around and plated their first three runs in the opening frame against Nashville starter Brian Baker. After Irving Falu tripled down the right field line, Johnny Giavotella crushed his fourth homer of the season to left for the first two runs. The Storm Chasers followed with three consecutive two-out singles, including David Lough's RBI base hit to score Max Ramirez for the third. The Storm Chasers left the bases full as Baker struck out his final batter on his 36th pitch of the inning. Omaha extended its lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth. Former Sound Jason Bourgeois singled to left field, advanced to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a Giavotella RBI base hit to center. The Sounds cut the lead in half at 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh as third baseman Taylor Green (2-for-4) and designated hitter Sean Halton started the frame with singles off reliever Sean O' Sullivan. Two batters later, Farris reached on an infield groundout to move Green to third and then moved to scoring position on a wild pitch. Both runners scored on a line drive double by Patterson, who has driven in four runs in his last two games. Nashville knotted the game at 4-4 in the next inning against reliever Roman Colon. Outfielder Logan Schafer struck out but advanced to first base on a wild pitch, followed by a game-tying, opposite-field homer by Conrad. The two-run shot over the left field wall was Conrad's fifth of the season and third in his last three games. In his shortest start of the season, Baker pitched 2 2/3 innings and was charged with three runs on eight hits with three strike outs. Donovan Hand gave up one run on two hits in 2 2/3 innings. Relievers Dan Meadows contributed 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Johnnie Lowe picked up his first Triple-A win with a season-high four scoreless innings while extended his shutout streak to 8.0 innings this season. The Storm Chasers stole four bags on the afternoon, the most this season against the Sounds, who came into the game ranked second in the PCL by throwing out 48% of runners. The Sounds snapped their errorless streak at 43 innings with a fielding error by Conrad in the top of the fifth. (Catch the ball, Conrad!) In his first start for the Storm Chasers this season after being optioned by the Royals, starting pitching Everett Teaford gave up three hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Francisley Bueno (0-2 ) took the loss. The Sounds and Storm Chasers will play the finale on a four-game series at 7:05 pm CT on Taco Bell Throwback Thursday. Right-hander Mike Fiers (0-2, 4.63) will toe the rubber against left-hander Vin Mazzaro (0-0, 5.14). Box Score Walk it off, Nashville! Four straight wins now. Corey Patterson (2-5 2B 2B) preformed the finishing move on the AAA Royals. Brooks Conrad (1-4 HR BB) tied the game up in the 8th. Taylor Green (2-5) and Eric Farris (2-5) also had big games. Again I see this in the "Baserunning" section: BASERUNNING SB: Farris (6, 2nd base off O'Sullivan/Ramirez, M). CS: Farris (2, 2nd base by Teaford/Ramirez, M). PO: Farris (1st base by Teaford). Incredible. Donavan Hand, Daniel Meadows and Johnnie Lowe went 8 1/3 giving up only 1 run. Lowe earned the win with 4 scoreless to close out the game for the Sounds. Paul Phillips was getting worked a bit. Brian Baker was likely part of the problem. BASERUNNING SB: Seratelli (4, 3rd base off Baker, B/Phillips), Lough (7, 2nd base off Baker, B/Phillips), Falu (6, 2nd base off Baker, B/Phillips), Giavotella (1, 2nd base off Hand/Phillips). The Omaha lineup is full of big league caliber bats. Some of them profile as average to slightly above. We go for the sweep tomorrow. Get it done Sounds! Game Log Baker was pulled after a K, Omaha Top of the 3rd Max Ramirez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Logan Schafer. Anthony Seratelli called out on strikes. David Lough singles on a ground ball to third baseman Taylor Green. Max Ramirez to 2nd. Terry Evans strikes out swinging. Pitcher Change: Donovan Hand replaces Brian Baker. 22. Sounds Defeat Omaha For Third Straight Victory 05/01/2012 11:44 PM ET Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Wily Peralta fanned eight batters during a seven-inning quality start while Brooks Conrad and Sean Halton each belted a three-run homer to lead the Nashville Sounds to their third straight victory, an 8-5 triumph over division-leading Omaha on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium. Peralta (1-2) earned his first victory of the season by working a quality start for the third time in five trips to the hill for Nashville. The right-hander struck out eight batters while allowing three runs on five hits over seven innings of work. Conrad continued his hot start to the season for the Sounds, homering for the second straight night as part of a 3-for-5 effort that extended his team-best hitting streak to nine games. The veteran infielder is hitting .413 (19-for-46) in 14 games for Nashville this season. Conrad joined third baseman Taylor Green (3-for-4) and catcher Martin Maldonado (3-for-4) with three-hit efforts to pace the Sounds' 14-hit offensive attack. Nashville (7-17) has posted three consecutive victories on the heels of its 10-game losing streak. The visiting Storm Chasers got off to a quick start against Peralta, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. After ex-Sound Jason Bourgeois opened the contest by drawing a four-pitch walk, Derrick Robinson slapped a single through the left side of the infield and Johnny Giavotella (2-for-4) lifted an RBI double to deep right-center to put the visitors on the board. Following another four-pitch walk issued by the right-hander, Peralta induced a double-play grounder from Max Ramirez for the first two outs, with Derrick Robinson scoring Omaha's second run on the play. The Sounds responded in the home half of the opening frame, halving the deficit to 2-1 when Logan Schafer led off with a single against Omaha starter Will Smith and later scored on an Erick Almonte groundout. Conrad powered the home team into the lead in the second frame when he slammed a three-run homer that careened off the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left-center. The blast, his team-leading fourth of the year and second in two nights, came against Smith and gave the Sounds a 4-2 advantage. Eric Farris (single) and Schafer (hit by pitch) also scored on the roundtripper. Omaha pulled back within a run at 4-3 in the third on Clint Robinson's two-out double to right that scored Giavotella. Halton gave the Sounds some breathing room in the seventh when he muscled up and smashed his second home run of the season , a massive three-run homer to left off Storm Chasers reliever Brandon Sisk that also plated Taylor Green and Caleb Gindl. Conrad extended the Nashvile lead to 8-3 in the eighth as he raced home from third on Corey Patterson fielder's choice grounder. Omaha didn't go down without a fight in the ninth, however, plating a pair of runs off Sounds reliever Mike McClendon on consecutive one-out RBI singles off the bats of David Lough and Tony Abreu to draw within 8-5. With runners on the corners and only one out, McClendon induced a fly ball to right from Kevin Kouzmanoff that was snagged by Gindl with a nice sliding catch then struck out pinch-hitter Anthony Seratelli to end the contest. Smith (0-2) took the loss for Omaha after allowing four runs on seven hits in his five frames. The teams continue the series with a 12:05 p.m. matinee on Wednesday afternoon. Right-hander Brian Baker (1-1, 5.63) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Omaha left-hander Everett Teaford, who will make his first Triple-A appearance of the year. Box Score Brooks Conrad (3-5 HR), Taylor Green (3-4 2B BB) and Martin Maldonado (3-4 2B) racked up hits in triplicate. Edwin Maysonet (2-4) has back-to-back two-hit games. Caleb Gindl (1-4 BB) and Logan Schafer (1-4 HBP) were each on twice. Sean Halton hit a "mammoth shot". Gindl's average is still south of the Mendoza Line, but comfortably above the Dunn Demarcation. Taylor Green has fought his way up to .271. Wily Peralta was very good again tonight despite, for the second straight start, getting roughed up early. The line: 7 IP 5 H 3 R 3 ER 2 BB 8 K 7:1 GO:FO. 23. 'Tees blanked by Yanks to open road trip 05/01/2012 9:53 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees TAMPA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees were shut out for the third time this season as they were blanked 3-0 by the Tampa Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Tuesday night. 2011 first round draft pick Taylor Jungmann (2-3, 2.72) gave the 'Tees a quality start as he allowed three runs in seven innings of work, while striking out six. Jungmann scattered eight hits against Tampa, including two that went for extra bases. Tampa scored early on as they pushed a run across in both the second and third innings. Tyson Blaser drove in Rob Segedin with a RBI single in the second, while Jose Mojica led the third inning off with a solo homer to give the Yanks a 2-0 lead. The Yankees' other run came in the bottom of the fifth as Eduardo Sosa doubled home Garrison Lassiter. Offensively, Brevard County (11-14) struggled once again as they tallied just three hits, struck out eight times and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The Manatees did draw seven walks, but were unable to take advantage as they left eight men on base. Brandon Kintzler, who was just assigned to the Manatees on a Major League rehab assignment, threw a scoreless eighth inning as he allowed a double and a walk. Brevard County will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday night as they take on Tampa (12-13) in the second game of their three-game set. Jimmy Nelson (2-1, 1.76) will take the mound for the 'Tees. In his last outing, which was last Friday against Tampa, he struck out six batters in 7 2/3 innings. The Yanks will send Nik Turley (2-0, 2.01) to the bump. Last Friday, Turley struck out five in eight innings of work against Brevard County. Box Score Agreed. Another nice outing. He owns a nice season line. Everything is pretty nice. Taylor Jungmann went 7 IP with 8 H 3 R 3 ER 0 BB 6 K 1 HR 12:0 GO:FO. There are hints of dominance peeking through. Brandon Kinzler pitched the 8th and was effective. Welcome back, Brandon. Kinzler has a legit shot at pitching high leverage big league innings at some point for the Brewers, but only if his stuff is as good as it was before his missed time. The Manatees pitchers recorded zero flyball outs. 7 walks and 3 hits, yet a goose egg in the runs column for the Sea Cows. I feel the need to call out some guys. Cody Hawn (.553 OPS), Mike Walker (.649 OPS), Miguel Velazquez (.611 OPS), Scott Kreiger (.389 OPS), Shea Vucinich (.522 OPS), Franklin Romero Jr. (.588 OPS), and Reggie Keen (.547 OPS) represent the majority of the everyday lineup. The other guys I did not mention are not much better. Keen (2B) and Romero Jr (home) threw out base runners from the outfield. Game Log Jungmann saved a run here with help from Vucinich Tampa Bottom of the 6th Rob Segedin singles on a fly ball to left fielder T. J. Mittelstaedt. With Kyle Roller batting, Rob Segedin steals (4) 2nd base. Kyle Roller grounds out, second baseman Shea Vucinich to first baseman Cody Hawn. Rob Segedin to 3rd. Tyson Blaser grounds out, second baseman Shea Vucinich to first baseman Cody Hawn. Kelvin Castro grounds out, second baseman Shea Vucinich to first baseman Cody Hawn.
  24. Good point that gets forgotten. Since April 6th his OPS is .645 and his OBP is .264. That's more than a week and a half. But he's not going to be a .900+ OPS guy over the course of a season. 11 days is about a week and a half. Ramirez is a good bet to sit around .900 OPS. Even in a year like 2011 when Ramirez had an .871 OPS it was still 37% better than the average OPS for 3B and he won a silver slugger. He is one of the premier hitting 3B in the league, without question.
