  1. Obviously trading Hardy for pitching is priority #1 this offseason, but like others have said 1) if someone were to offer a good pitcher for McGehee alone there's no way Melvin turns it down, and B) he would be a great addition to a trade with Hardy or Hart to a team that needs power and infield help, like... the Giants. Cain and Lincecum are probably off-limits, but I would love for the Brewers to get some of their pitching. (I wonder if Hardy, McGehee, and Hart could land Cain?) Like someone said to me a few weeks ago, I think there is a 95% chance that at least two of Hardy/Weeks/McGehee/Hall/Iribarren/Heether will be traded in the offseason. Unfortunately though, barring a crap-for-crap trade, I think Hall is your backup SS to Escobar.
  2. Schafer with a double and two walks. The guy has been on fire lately, and he has had more walks than Ks. Another solid outing from Axford. Wouldn't be surprised to see him get a roster spot on Sept. 1st if one is still available. In his last 11.1 IP he has only walked two and given up 9 hits (six in one outing) and K'd 11. Overall 11 hits in 16.1 IP with 8 BB and 18 K, and a nice 2.00 GO/AO. Outside of that one really bad outing he has been lights out in AAA. Interesting that Chase Wright pitched an inning of relief three days after going seven innings. Could that be in preparation for a September callup to the Brewers bullpen? If anything they need starters right now.
  3. On the bright side, all five of Arnett's outs were Ks. I too though think he is a little overrated on the P50 - I'd have him at #10 until I see some success at higher levels. If I am reading the box score correctly, the T-Rats scored 11 runs on only 7 RBI. I don't think I've ever seen four runs not generated off of RBIs in a game before. Meadows looks promising, as he has K'd about one per inning, but the GO/AO needs improvement. At 6'5", 235, a lefty, and only 21, hopefully he has plenty of room to develop, and I'm sure he will get plenty of opportunity to do so. Schafer in his last 10 games - .425 AVG, 4 BB, 3K in 44 plate appearances.
  4. I'm here in SD; was at the game last night, Sect 115, row 8, right by the Brewers bullpen. Will be there tonight too. Joel, drop me a line, if you get here in time perhaps we can rendezvous for a bite/beer before the game or after. I'll be at the game Monday and might have an extra parking pass. I believe I'm in field dugout sect. 7 row 7. Wednesday is the big one - I was the beneficiary of a gift of seats three rows behind home plate in the dugout section. Good chance I'll be on camera all night (look for the tall guy with blonde hair and a fat face in a suit).
  5. I want them to tank until we get a legitimate star to build around. The Seattle SuperSonics say hi. Orlando, Cleveland, San Antonio, Boston and several other teams say hi. Even if they had tanked last year and won the lottery, Blake Griffin is no Dwight Howard, LeBron James, or Tim Duncan. And Boston won their title with trades for Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett and by exceeding the salary cap, something the Bucks cannot do, not by tanking and getting the #1 overall pick. Found this interesting in the article on ESPN.com regarding Bowen's release: Via his Twitter account Friday night, Bowen wrote: "Just got off the plane [and] got word that I will not be in Milwaukee for Christmas!" I think that tells you what you need to know about what players think about Milwaukee.
  6. You're probably absolutely right on that one. Then again if we had that upper level pitching, we may have just held onto it and waited for some of those arms to be ready next season. If we had upper level pitching, they would have been in Milwaukee starting instead of Villanueva, Burns, and McClung.
  7. In the words of Randolph & Mortimer Duke... "SELL!! SELL!!! SELL!!!" 1) Kendall (Salome/Corporan can step in) 2) Counsell (infield is crowded anyway - Iribarren/Heether can fill in) 3) Hoffman? This is of course assuming no one wants Suppan or Hall. The Washburn for Weeks rumor is very interesting though... it would strengthen the team without subtracting anything as Weeks is out for the year. I would want a prospect thrown in there as Weeks was just starting to break out. I think they will get more value for Hardy/Hart in the offseason, but if they can get enough pitching for either one I'd be fine with the trade.
  8. Pretty amazing that Rogers and Mike Jones might both have worked themselves back onto the prospect radar screen by the end of the season. What in the world has Brent Brewer done to warrant being placed in the #3 spot in the lineup? Hopefully Aguilar has righted the ship, and it would be nice to see him back in AA.
  9. His secondary pitches are not as refined. CV's secondary pitches are crushed.
  10. He's not a strikeout pitcher, he's a sinkerball pitcher, so his job is to get guys to ground out. His GO/AO this year is 1.60 and last year was 2.07 so he seems to do that fairly well. At this point the expectation is for him to be replacement level/major league average, and if he can come in and have a 4.50 ERA as a starter that would be just fine, and would be better than what they have been getting.
  11. Actually, Yo hasn't shown the ability to go deep into games. Only twice in his last 10 starts has he walked fewer than four guys. That's my biggest concern right now. Four of his last 10 starts he hasn't gone more than five innings because of the walks and high pitch counts.
  12. McClung hasn't been the same since he made those starts. It makes you wonder if this had been brewing for awhile. Kind of like Bush's starts after he got hit with the liner. I was going to say the same thing. Something probably happened when he tried going deeper into games and didn't get stretched out enough, and often times an injury is caused when someone is favoring something else that doesn't feel good causing them to lose the correct form. His ERA as a reliever prior to starting was something like 2.50, and the way he's blown up since starting is really odd for him to have been 100%. Honks - it would be something for a guy to make it to the majors all the way from A-ball in a season. The pitchers they have on the 40-man who aren't on the team are Swindle, Green, Wright, Scarpetta, Rogers, Periard, and Aguilar, but it could certainly be argued that Axford and Wooten could be better bullpen options right now than any of them. Although in his last 10 appearances Chase Wright has a 3.11 ERA despite mediocre peripherals, so he could be another lefty bullpen option. My guess is that Swindle or Wright would get the callup before Wooten or Axford.
  13. I think at this point we just go with the guys we have. Yeah, we probably won't make the playoffs, but realistically we're not going to be making the playoffs every year. Most of the bandwagon fans were spoiled by last year and think it's always going to be like that. Come back strong next year and make another run, and we keep our young guys to either replace traded guys or to use in a better deal next season. Yep, agreed. Go with what you have, but no fire sale either. They are still within a hot streak and plenty of time left, and you never know. If Zambrano and Harden get hurt (quite possible), and Carpenter and Piniero get hurt (quite possible), the Brewers could be one good homestand away from being back in contention. If one of Dillard or Cody can take Burns' place and at least be replacement-level/average starter, and Parra continue his recent trend, they could very well still have a shot.
  14. I was just going to point out that in his last 10 games Schafer has hit .357 with 2 HRs, 3 BB, and only one K. I know people want to see him walk more, but to strike out only once in 45 plate appearances is pretty amazing. So far on the season he has 27 BB to 40 K which is a pretty good ratio. He was brought up only to cover for DA when he was out; he wasn't sent back down to BC for plate discipline - he walked 4 times and K'd only 3 times in 27 PA's in AA. Over 500 plate appearances that would be 74 walks on a season - not bad at all. Nice long relief outing by Axford. It will take a while to get the ERA down from that one awful outing, but other than that he has pitched well in AAA. To see him go 3 innings and give up only 2 hits and no walks is very encouraging.
  15. I've heard the wild animal park is better than the zoo. There's Sea World also. LA: - rent a car (convertibles are cheap during the week) and drive up PCH to Malibu and Santa Barbara. Stop at Paradise Cove in Malibu for lunch and/or a beverage. - take same car and drive south around Palos Verdes to/towards Trump Golf Course. There is public parking just to the left of the clubhouse and trails where you can walk around and walk down to the ocean. Tyranea (sp?) is right next door and they have a new outdoor bar that is pretty cool. Plenty of places along that route to stop, picnic, and walk down to the ocean. - hit the pier in Hermosa Beach - good people watching. Lunch upstairs at Hennessey's overlooking the ocean. - Rodeo Drive is nice to walk around just to see the cars that go through there - NOTE - NO TAILGATING AT DODGER STADIUM. You can eat food in the parking lot if you want to bring in something pre-made (subs, fast food, chips, etc), but no cooking or drinking alcohol
  16. I'd say sooner rather than later. I haven't seen the video, but I saw a still on a news report and it shouldn't be difficult to figure out what hotel that is. Then look at the camera angle from that room and figure out where it was shot from and see what you find. Then they should be able to figure out how it was taken, and who would have access to what on that date/time. Boy, talk about a test of a man's moral fibers. I haven't seen the video, nor have I searched for it, but there is a devil on one of my shoulders talking into one of my ears (not necessarily because it's her, but I'm a fan of tall voluptuous women in general). If you can say that you haven't had a devil on one of your shoulders since you heard about it... you're a better man than me. Regardless, like Series said, not this way, and that person should lose their freedom for a while.
  17. I was just going to post that he has been on a nice little run lately. In his last three starts he has 19 innings, 17 hits, 5 ER (2.37 ERA), 2 BB, and 19 K. Might give Rogers a run for his money for comeback player of the year. Here's to hoping he continues this trend.
  18. Agreed. At 23 years old he averaged 12.4 ppg, 5.7 apg, and a 3:1 assist:turnover ratio in only 27.5 minutes per game; with a healthy Redd and Bogut the assists should increase, and at his age he should get better. I'm not ready to turn over the reigns to a 19-year-old rookie, and the fact that he can sub at shooting guard adds to his value. That being said, if they can get even better value in a sign and trade I'm all for that. But I'm not in favor of letting him walk with no compensation - he's too good to let go. I'd rather cut Bell and eat his salary then let Sessions go for nothing.
  19. One of my biggest problems here is that we should be a buy low/sell high team. Felipe Lopez probably has the most value right now than he could ever have the rest of his career and probably more than he's ever had previously in his career. That, coupled with the fact that we didn't really need him makes this trade very underwhelming. We could have gotten him for a bag of peanuts this last offseason - instead we're trading two prospects for him. Remember, the only reason this trade happened is because Weeks is out for the season. Sure they could have gotten him for peanuts... if your definition of peanuts is $3.5M for a bench player.
  20. I don't know why we would offer Lopez Arby's. Why in the world wouldn't they? Weeks, Hardy, Escobar, Gamel, McGehee, Hall. Possibly Iribarren and Heether. No room at the Inn next year. After digesting this a bit, the one area they needed improvement on was a leadoff hitter with a good OBP. As is, I'm OK with it, and it could be a good trade provided the following happens: 1) Lopez maintains his OBP. 2) Lopez is offered arbitration and declines, netting a supplemental pick; or 3) Lopez is offered arbitration and accepts, and Hardy is traded in the offseason for pitching and Counsell is not brought back, making Lopez the backup utility infielder. (That would be funny though, because the bench of Hall and Lopez would make double what the starting infield of Gamel/Escobar/Weeks would make). Lopez takes Hardy's salary.
  21. I agree. At this point I'd almost be inclined to ride out Fielder for the next couple seasons and then take the comp picks. While I am in the camp of "no need to trade him any time soon", I am absolutely not in the "take the comp picks" camp. Not so much because of the last two drafts, but because Prince is that good where they could get a lot more for him in a trade then the value of a late first round pick and a sandwich pick. Those picks would have to turn out to be Matt Cain and Yo Gallardo for that to be worthwhile, and the odds of that happening are very, very slim. (A comparable might be 2005 when the Red Sox got Ellsbury at #23 and Buchholz at #42, but I don't make that trade straight-up for Fielder.) Honestly, I think Prince at 25 years old is on the verge of being the best hitter in the game not named Pujols, and the fact that Prince is a lefty makes him that much more valuable. I say exhaust all efforts to sign him, but if that can't be done then deal him because there is a 95% chance that they will get more in a trade than what two draft picks will bring.
  22. If it could happen, 2/3rds of the teams in the NBA would be standing in line outside of that courtroom.
  23. They want to get rid of Taint McFadden's contract???
  24. The problem isn't with the Cubs, it's with the Tribune Company. If they want to sell off the Cubs as a separate business unit, the "bankruptcy" is just a paper move (think assigned to Helena for a week) to protect any potential buyers of the Cubs from being sued down the road for any debts related to the Tribune Company. That's what is scaring buyers away from the Cubs.
  25. Mike Burns. Comparing starters and relievers is apples and oranges stats wise, and I can't find any stats that shows effectiveness or OPS-A based on number of pitches thrown in an outing or by inning, but it appears that Burns can at least get guys out the first time or two through the order. Someone short on starters may just claim Burns if they try to send him back to Nashville, in which case they lose a starting pitcher (even if a mediocre one) at a position that they have very little depth. Personally I think Burns has more value to them than CV right now.
