Next Power 50 in Mid-Autumn
LouisEly replied to TuesdaysWithRillo's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
For kicks (not that my opinion counts): 1) Gamel 2) Escobar 3) Lucroy (love the OBP & more BB than K; .808 OPS in Huntsville, much less at a premium position, is nothing to scoff at) 4) Braddock 5) Lawrie (young but still not a great year, should repeat low A) 6) Green 7) Salome 8) Rogers 9) Schafer (offense and defense in CF; the Brady Anderson/Steve Finley pre-steriods comparisons are valid) 10) Axford (The shocker! In the 9 games since the blow-up: 12.1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 14 K) 11) Arnett 12) Odorizzi 13) Gindl 14) Cain 15) Peralta 16) Scarpetta 17) Jeffress (still throws upper 90's, suspended or not) 18) Anundsen 19) Butler 20) Iribarren 21-25) Rivas, Prince, Aguilar, Dillard, spot saved for Kentrail Davis 26-30) Cody, Wooten, Periard, Dennis, Heckathorn 31-35) Fiers, Hand, Baron, Bucci, Garfield 36-40) The land of underperforming 2nd round draft picks: Dykstra, Walla, Brewer, Lintz, Frederickson (yes I know he was a sandwich pick) 41-50) Farris, Bowman, Katin, Wilson, Wheeler, Zarraga, Welch, Frerichs, Corporan, and... welcome back, Mike Jones Edit: And, of course, as soon as I post this Lawrie goes on a tear and Axford gives up a 3-run dinger. -
Thanks for the link vaccinator - TH says that according to Melvin he is "optimistic" that they will sign Kentrail Davis, and "expects" to sign Brooks Hall. Because of their injuries, Butler and Braddock are good guesses to go to the AFL with Cain, Green, Lucroy, and Rogers. With all but Lucroy missing time because of injuries, the AFL would be a great way to help "catch up" without wearing them down.

Missing are also guys like Roy Oswalt, Chad Billingsley & Jake Peavy, not to mention Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver and Bob Gibson. While Billingsley doesn't have the height, he goes 240. Nolan Ryan is 6'2". Tom Seaver goes 6'1", 210, and is a lefty; as mentioned, lefties seem to make up a bulk of the exceptions. Also missing from the list is Randy Johnson, Derek Lowe, A.J. Burnett, John Lackey, Roger Clemens, and had Dusty Baker not blown out their arms you might have been able to throw Kerry Wood and Mark Prior into the mix. Arguments can be made both ways. But the majority are 6'3" or taller.

September callups and 40 man implications
LouisEly replied to kramnoj's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
MNBrew hit the five - Hardy, Gamel, Salome, Dillard, Smith. McClung and Bush may at some point come off the DL. I am willing to bet though that if neither of McClung or Bush come back you will see another arm - possibly Wright, but my dark horse is Axford. When depends on where Milwaukee stands; if Milwaukee makes a run the next two and a half weeks they will be there on 9/1 regardless of whether Nashville makes the playoffs. If not, they will arrive when Nashville's season wraps up. If we get lucky, Kendall and Counsell will be traded for a couple of prospects and they will bring up Corporan and Heether. -
One point I didn't like in the story above was the point about the team drafting bigger pitchers because they supposedly hold up better. Pitchers comes in all shapes and sizes, and some just happen to be more brittle than others, regardless if they're 6'6" or 6'0". Just taking a look at ERA leaders (for simplicity sake) and what they are listed at: 1) Tim Lincecum (5'11", 170) 2) Chris Carpenter (6'6", 230) 3) Zach Grienke (6'2", 190) 4) Matt Cain (6'3", 245) 5) Wandy Rodriguez (5'11", 160) 6) Dan Haren (6'5", 215) 7) Felix Hernandez (6'3", 225) 8) Roy Halladay (6'6", 230) 9) Adam Wainwright (6'7", 230) 10) Clayton Kershaw (6'3", 225) 11) J. A. Happ (6'6", 200) 12) Edwin Jackson (6'3", 210) 13) Cliff Lee (6'3", 190) 14) Javier Vasquez (6'2", 210) 15) Josh Johnson (6'7", 250) 16) Johann Santana (6'0", 210) 17) Jair Jurrjens (6'1", 200) 18) Josh Beckett (6'5", 220) 19) Jarrod Washburn (6'1", 195) 20) Joel Piniero (6'1", 200) 21) Justin Verlander (6'5", 225) 22) Carlos Zambrano (6'5", 255) Noticeably absent from the list is CC Sabathia; others in the top 50 6'4" or taller include Millwood, Jimenez, Lannan, Doug Davis, Burnett, and Weaver. Lincecum and Rodriguez appear to be the exception much more than the rule, and most of the smaller guys (Rodriguez, Lee, Santana, Washburn) are lefties.

I don't know if they are running the same promotions for this movie where you all are as they are here in LA, but the billboards and ads here are stupid. They all have a white background with a caricature of an alien with the red circle and line through (i.e. "No aliens") and say something like, "Non-humans not allowed on the bench" with small print below that says "Be ware of non-human secretions". The billboards are similar, they revolve around "This is a non-human zone". It reminds me of the guerilla ad campaign a few years back for that Cartoon Network show where they had this little robot sticking up its middle finger. Basically the ads are making the movie seem like a comedy, but the trailers are completely different. Not a good marketing strategy if you ask me.

I have wondered why Paciorek has stayed on their rosters so long with so little production. MTBrew - I seem to recall that same thing being said about Helena teams in previous years. Maybe I am mistaken. Is it a coaching/organization thing, or just the result of being down big? Frerichs only pitched to two batters in the 9th; they got a hit and a walk off of him, but only two batters before he was replaced? This isn't the majors. Anyone know if there was an injury?

Odorizzi! Peralta! Rivas! Lucroy! Green! Cain! Good day for prospects all around (except Frederickson)! I was just going to post about Lawrie and thoughts of him repeating low A; I'm all for it, as it never hurts to get his confidence up and if he starts dominating next year they can move him up. I don't think moving him up to Brevard and their tough hitting environment for righties will help Lawrie. Schafer with a hit, a walk, and an OF assist - I think that's assist #12 on the season. I had a hunch that the Brewers were really high on him because of how much PT he got during spring training. His walk rate has gotten better and is above .800 OPS in Brevard - no easy task. I would not be at all surprised if he is the opening day CF in 2011. Makes the loss of Brantley much more palatable, but it would have been nice to have Brantley ready in CF so they can free Cam's $10M to go towards pitching. Pretty amazing that Axford has his ERA down to 3.32 in Nashville already considering the blowup game he had. Since that blowup game he has this line: 11.1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 4 BB (unfortunately three in one game blowing the save), 13 K. Punch his plane ticket for Milwaukee as soon as Nashville's season is over.

Seriously, how can a GM and the manager he just hired before the start of this season have such a disconnect in terms of what is best for this team? When Macha signed the contract did he not understand what the teams philosophy was going to be? That's because at the beginning of the season the team had a totally different philosophy. It was a veteran team and if Hardy/Hart/Hall/Kendall/Parra had stats more towards their career averages/trends and had Weeks/Bush not gotten hurt, this team would be in a totally different mode. (Not to mention the underperformance of the bench, forcing the acquisition of Gerut and Catalanotto.) They would have no need for Gamel or Escobar. But now due to the injuries to Weeks/Bush and the underperformance of Hall/Hardy/Hart/Kendall they are probably at least 10 games of not more worse than they should be and thus in a position where they need to see if Escobar/Gamel/Salome/Bourgeois are better than what they had planned on going into next year with.

Bill Hall DFAed, Bourgeois called up
LouisEly replied to Invader3K's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
1) The only reason Bill Hall was called back up from the minors to begin with was because Hart got hurt and Hall was the only person on the 40-man in the minors who had any experience at all playing OF; will Hart out they only had four OFs on the ML roster. B) The only reason Bourgeois got called up was because they needed an OF and it was between him, Patterson, and Katin. The only reason Heether was not called up was because he has only played 17 games in the OF and LF at that, never in CF or RF. Heether was not an option for this move. (Frankly I would have preferred Katin.) 3) I think part of this is an audition for Bourgeois for next year, be it a starter or bench player. Cite whatever MLEs you want to but so far Casey McGehee among others, good and bad, have proven that stat is not gospel. And frankly I think speed is a lot more valuable than people give it credit for because of the pressure it puts on defenses (watch a game closely in person from field level seats when Pierre is up or on base and see how it changes), the extra bases speed takes (not just stolen bases, but first-to-third, scoring from second, etc.), how it changes pitch selection when speed is on base, and the added defense in the outfield it provide. All things that do not show up on MLE, OPS, OXS, BABIP, TGIF, CYA, SNAFU, and any other acronym you want to throw out. But that is a topic for another thread. Hall's WAR 0.2 Suppan's WAR -0.3 If WAR has Hall above average and Suppan below average for this season that stat is seriously flawed. -
The Brewers were in on the Roy Halladay sweepstakes, but were reluctant to give up Alcides Escobar and Mat Gamel So THAT was the asking price... I'm glad he didn't make that deal as well. As of today, Melvin says he's not motivated to move J.J. Hardy, but hints that the Brewers could move him after the season to make room for Alcides Escobar. Read: he will not be traded on August 11th, 2009, however as soon as the season is over he will darned well be looking to trade Hardy for pitching. Melvin sounds hesitant to experiment with Rickie Weeks in center field Didn't say anything about right field! He did say a lineup with both Lopez and Weeks would be attractive, said his "stat guy" would call it a good start to a "sequential lineup". Hmmm... initially I took it to mean R-L-R-L-R-L (Weeks-Lopez-Braun-Fielder-Hart-Gamel-Escobar/Hardy-C-P), which would be realistic. It could also mean something like the Dodgers lineup; I noticed last week that although Kemp is probably their 2nd best hitter, he usually hits 6th-7th-8th. Spread out the lineup a bit, alternate lefties/righties like the Dodgers do (spread out Ethier-Ramirez-Loney-Kemp, not just 3-4-5-6), and that might be "sequential".

Why the different feelings on the two similar situations? Maybe it is the difference of positions Exactly - there's a lot more of a mental/experience aspect to catching than 3B, because as a catcher you are involved in every single pitch whereas at 3B you are only involved in a handful of plays a game. Thus as a 3B it is more important to play everyday for development because they only get a few chances a game. Kind of like how the QB is involved in some way in every single play of the game, whereas a WR is only involved in a handful of plays a game. One more thing with Salome - at 5'7" I would expect that he have a little better plate discipline to walk more given that he has a smaller strike zone than the average player.
-
For the time being let's pretend that Maverick Lasker was the 2nd round pick last year, Nic Bucci was the 5th round pick, and Seth Lintz was the 18th round pick. Anyone else feel slightly better? Repeat - Corey Patterson is making a helluvan effort to get back into the majors, and it is scaring the crap out of me. Anyone else thinking about the "try Bourgeois in CF for a year until Cain/Schafer is ready and put Cam's $10M towards pitching" bandwagon?
-
Let's say the Brewers are out of playoff contention at some point in September. Does Salome get a few starts? You mean like, September 1st? Absolutely he will get starts if and when they are out of it. Well... Macha is mananging the team... But how does backing up in the majors help their development any more than splitting time in AAA Backing up in the majors can let him work with and learn every day from a seasoned veteran who can act as a player-coach. Not too different from a QB sitting on the bench a few years like Rodgers did learning from watching Favre ; it is different in that in baseball you do need to play and face pitching regularly or you will lose your timing, but it is similar in that you can learn from a veteran in practice and watching major league games and you can learn from a higher level of coaching in the majors. As long as he is starting at least two games a week he will be fine. In Mike Matheny's first full season in Milwaukee (1995) he only played in 80 games and only got 180 ABs but that didn't hurt his development. I'd argue that in none of his seasons in Milwaukee did Matheny get significantly more than 50% of the plate appearances of their catchers, so there will be plenty of ABs to go around even if he is "backing up". One season as a backup won't hurt.

If I'm reading baseball-reference.com correctly, would that be Schafer's 11th OF assist this year to only one error? Dude is getting it done offensively and defensively. -
While Cam is a great player, I would give serious consideration that Borgeouis could provide a year of equal CF defense and replacement-level offense as a stopgap until Cain/Schafer is ready, and then put that $10M towards pitching until the next wave of pitching arrives in 2012. I didn't say that the pitching would be free agents though; it could be pitching acquired from a low payroll team (Marlins) that can't/doesn't want to afford the arbitration increases.

And for the life of me I couldn't think of that guy, the one guy from last year who I was really high on that didn't appear on any of the rosters but I just couldn't put my finger on it... until I saw Corey Frerichs' name as starting for AZL today. Went back to the injury thread and sure enough it was there - torn ACL. (What's up with Brewers pitchers with ACLs? Yo, Frerichs, Seidel...) I don't know what kind of "stuff" he has but he put up really good numbers in WV last year: 2.82 ERA, 92 K's and only 57 hits in 73.1 IP; a little heavy on the walks (41), but I really like that K/H/IP ratios. Perhaps someone can fill me in on his "stuff" and if he is a legit bullpen prospect. And then he tag-teams with another rehabbing pitcher, Josh Butler, with a solid outing. Bowman with a great outing too. Good news on the pitching front! Another guy who has quietly been on fire lately is Zelous Wheeler. -
Virus Protection Software Question
LouisEly replied to Point Beer Is Best's topic in Off-Topic Forum
The thing with AVG Free is that it does not scan anything you download... so you better be sure that everything that you download is OK or you are screwed. The paid version of AVG has a 30-day free trial so I would recommend trying that and seeing if you like that. Every January/February you can get free anti-virus software with the purchase of tax software (Turbo Tax, Tax Cut, etc.) at Office Depot/Office Max/Staples, so if you do your own taxes you can get the software for free; they often come with rebates if you switch from a competitor so the net cost even without purchasing tax software is $20 or less. Many of the paid ones come with $2500 or $5000 worth of protection in case they fail, and to me having that peace of mind is worth the $20 it costs. -
Sure there are lots of arms in A & rookie ball, however I don't get excited about anyone until they have some success at AA or above. Right now that includes only four starters on the Power 50 (Butler, Cody, Dillard, Hand), and of those Dillard projects as a reliever, and Hand and Cody project as #4/5 starters at best with Cody starting to get figured out in AAA which does not bode well for future success. Maybe Braddock can be stretched back out to a starter, maybe he can't. The other thing to keep in mind is that Brevard tends to suppress hitters numbers a bit, which means they artificially help pitchers numbers a bit, thus the other reason why I need to see success at AA or above. We'll see how well Anundsen/Rogers/Periard/Rivas fare in Huntsville next year. Hopefully they will have the success Butler has had, but I have questions about all four (Rogers - health; others - lack of impressive numbers anywhere but Brevard). I think 2011 is a bit optimistic for anyone but Butler, Cody, Hand, and Jones, and I'm not sold on the last three being any better than a #5 (welcome back Braden Looper in 2010). 2012 is a more likely timeline for the mass of pitching to arrive.
