  1. Offseason for hiura, yes by all means For grisham, I'd want to see a bit more and revisit around this time next year
  2. Loss column also matters more when the teams competing have a wide gap in games remaining on their schedules...much was made of the loss column last year around this time due to all the looming cub makeup games when the brewers had off days. While the cubs didn't crater down the stretch they were definitely gassed, which helped a hot brewer team gain in the standings as september rolled along. Those extra games start looking much harder to avoid losing when you are tired and don't have a deep 40 man to count on This year, loss column isnt that critical to track separately since the games remaining are all very close...just track the standings
  3. Cubs rotation with a very april brewers like dumpster fire string of starts the last turn through...something to keep an eye on with that group of vets who aren't exactly looking strong
  4. I think this season has more candidates for ugliest win of the season than any in Brewers history. That's a lot of W's then!
  5. No, he just can't throw any offspeed worth a damn - and when his fastball gets turned around it gets pounded
  6. Your 2019 Milwaukee Brewers - proof that bullpenning as an organizational philosophy is a terrible idea. LOL'ing at all those spring training threads about our bevy of out getters right about now... Hader has to come out of this game because he can't throw strikes...good God
  7. Grandal sets up 5" off the plate on an 0-2 count...Hader grooves a fastball middle middle and gets lucky there
  8. it's almost like a reliever that is constantly relied on to get 4+ outs to close games out could use a 2nd pitch after facing the league 2+ seasons...
  9. Next time Odor is up, honestly just set out a tee - he'll get himself out Leave it to this staff to just leave a sour taste in mouths no matter what.
  10. Same problem he had as a starter more often than not...as a reliever at least he isnt in the game long enough for hitters to time his fastball and also shell him.
  11. You nailed it with your first sentence in your last paragraph, and with facing 2 Lefty’s this weekend and coming off a 4 hit game, isn’t this weekend the perfect time to switch Shaw with Freitas? If they were in AL ballparks and had the option of a DH then yes...since they play the Rangers in Milwaukee, not really. Pina can catch and Grandal can start at 1B if they want a platoon heavy RH lineup against lefty starters. Sure they could switch Shaw and Freitas, but Freitas probably doesn't start those games and it's probably a better option to have lefty hitters on the bench to pinch hit against righty relievers as those games go on. Plus, making that move for 2-3 games basically locks that roster in for 10 until they would switch back out - I won't be upset or thrilled if a move like this happens.
  12. I feel like a thread like this cropped up at exactly the same time last year, and 75% of the posters here wrote the division off to the Cubs for the same reasons based on projection system percentages and games apart in the loss column. We all know how that turned out. There is still a ton of baseball left to be played, and crazy things always happen in September. The Brewers still have a great chance to win the division - they also have a much higher chance of missing the playoffs altogether compared to last year based on their record. There isn't going to be a single NL Central team with a mid-90's win total this year, let alone 2. The Brewers have the Cubs for 7 and the Cards for 9 more games - that could either be a blessing or a curse, but as of right now they control their own destiny for the division based on their schedule. If the Brewers are within a couple games of the division even headed into mid-September, I like their chances to repeat considering the Cubs and Cards play each other 7 of their final 10 games, too. Until it's totally unrealistic, aim for the division, especially when there are still so many teams in the running for WC spots.
  13. Freitas will be up in September after rosters expand and the Brewers wouldn't need to risk losing Pina for nothing by taking him off the 25 man roster in August since he is out of options. Freitas has had a great AAA season to date, and would likely be an asset off the bench as a RH pinch hitter/spot catching starter depending on matchups...however for the next ~3.5 weeks I'd rather have a full complement of bullpen options along with the two catchers who have handled the MLB staff (Grandal/Pina) on the gameday roster. I'm not really sure why there is so much clamoring for a guy who has proven to be a AAAA level player in his career, especially because him replacing anyone currently on the 25 man roster probably weakens their MLB roster flexibility or leads to the Brewers losing Pina...if there's a catching injury before then that requires an IL stint before September, sure bring Freitas up. All that being said, I can see the option of replacing Shaw on the roster with Freitas given the fact there are quite a few lefty starters they'll be facing - however given Pina's good numbers against LHP and Grandal's ability to switch hit and play 1B I don't think it would guarantee Freitas a ton of ABs even with a platoon advantage for him.
  14. I think I've posted this in another thread, but if the Brewers can stay within arm's length of the NL Central lead and WC spots through the rest of their tough August slate of games, they've got to be considered a favorite to make the postseason once rosters expand in September - despite the uneven bullpen arms, the expanded rosters will help them the same way it did last September at least to some extent. The more important factor is what their schedule looks like for the month compared to what other NL teams competing with them will face. The Cubs and Cards play each other 7 times during the last 10 days of the season, when the Brewers will be playing the Pirates, Reds, and Rockies. Keep the offense humming along and the season-long pitching inconsistencies are less alarming...particularly if Woodruff can get back in the rotation down the stretch.
  15. Hardly time for an eulogy. The Brewers are a whole 1 GB of the three different playoff positions (NL Central and 2 WCs) entering today's action. Before the season started tons of posters repeatedly pointed out how muddled the entire NL looked to be, particularly the NL Central. A bunch of good rosters that all had noticeable holes/weaknesses besides the Dodgers. All of that speculation has proven to be pretty darn accurate, yet too many on here were assuming the Brewers' team was closer to it's 7-1 start in terms of where there record should be? If the Brewers are in playoff position or even within a couple games of a spot when the calendar flips over to September and rosters expand, they have a very good chance at making their 2nd straight postseason appearance because they still have alot of MLB-caliber depth on their 40 man and their schedule is favorable to go on a run - especially because the Cubs & Cards play each other 7 times over the season's last 10 games and the Brewers will be playing the likes of the Pirate/Rockies/Reds in that same stretch. The fact is that barring a collapse in August that would be far worse than anything this team has done recordwise in 2019, the Brewers are going to be in the thick of a playoff race right down to the wire - sure they have been frustrating based on perceived talent level/expectations, but teams like the Cubs, Rockies, Phillies, and Mets have had an even worse go of it based on what their preseason expectations were.
  16. At this point he wants to beat anyone.. they are a bigger disappointment in the standings this year than the brewers are
  17. Won't be that big of a risk if arcia keeps having 6 hit series...but they will need someone competent on the roster soon. With the off days built in for august, they may roll the dice until Sept roster expansion. No good utility IF option on the bench could be a double switch problem late in games though
  18. can't hit right now but Shaw's been great at 1B... Seems like the Brewers have missed out on about 4-5 extra runs all game, has the feeling like that's going to come back and bite them right now
  19. sure, but it's normally a ball where a guy on 2nd scores...hopefully they can continue picking him up with another big hit or two this inning
