When you're sitting at pick #12, unless you don't have a guy you really like left on the board, you take him there - don't get cute trading down in this spot. Then as the round progresses and gets closer to 20, see if there's still a guy or two you really like and get aggressive to trade up using that late 1st round pick and change. Do the same thing they did in the Raji/Matthews draft.

Gotta be careful jumping to conclusions so early, especially when the Brewers have basically played two of the perceived best NL offenses in LAD and STL, plus the cubs, for all but 6 of their games to date. All those games have been played in good weather as well. There's too much familiarity playing all these games on top of each other. That being said, it will be interesting to see if brewer pitching can adjust and improve. If it cant, then I think criticism of the pitching coach can start being warranted.

By the end of this series, I think both ballclubs are going to be happy to play other teams until october...really hate the scheduling to start this year

Kershaw's gameplan appears to largely be to walk anyone that can hit, then just get the other half of the lineup that can hit at all right now to kill innings. Lineup is just spaced out enough to make that strategy gold this far

Reading through the first 5 or 6 pages of this thread where the initial reactions were posted is a special kind of entertainment, particularly with it appearing more certain by the day that the brewers acquired a generational talent for what amounts to a couple Broxtons, a 2b who might turn into a good mlb player if he is allowed to develop another 5 years in the minors, and a pitcher that has "upside" simply because when compared to the other prospects in this trade he better be great - even though my opinion of yamamoto is he hasn't been a prospect long enough for everyone to realize he's just a guy.

Hopefully in a few weeks, we can get the while 2017 rotation gang back together and Jimmy Nelson can say "hold my beer"...

Neither Shaw nor Aguilar are platoon players. Shaw has consistently driven in runs (101 - 86) and hit 30+ HRs the last two years. IF Hiura was to come up, either Thames would have to be cut or Aguilar would have to be traded. Most all of Shaw's power production comes from facing righthanded pitching - which he'd primarily get as a 1B platoon starter. 30 of Shaw's 32 2018 HR came against RHP. 26 of Shaw's 31 2017 HR came against RHP. Shaw should be a platoon player on a deep team with a solid RH hitting option to spell him. I agree that of Aguilar, Shaw, and Thames, Shaw should be the last player considered to be dealt/released/benched. Aguilar just flat out needs to start producing

Barring injury to the MLB roster, I don't think Hiura is a fit in Milwaukee until the cluster of Moose/Shaw/Aguilar/Thames is better sorted out. I think the Brewers' best potential situation to man 1B/2B/3B for this year would include Moose as the everyday 3B, Hiura as the everyday 2B, and a platoon of Shaw/Aguilar or Thames/Aguilar at 1B. However, while Hiura has gotten off to a good start offensively when he hits the ball, the strikeouts and even moreso lack of walks are troubling even though it's very early in the season. He's got to be swinging at everything right now, which is a recipe for a bad MLB start if pitchers don't have to throw him strikes to get him out. I'm as high on Hiura as anyone, and I expect that K rate and K:BB ratio to normalize closer to his career levels before too long - however it's too soon to think about calling him up. Only reason this is a conversation is because the Brewers are getting very poor offensive production from 1B and 3B, now even LF, to start the season. When those 3 defensive positions give you next to no offense, people start looking for it elsewhere. The 2019 club is fine with Moose at 2B and Hiura figuring it out in AAA - provided Jesus, Shaw, and Braun start hitting like corner IFs and OFs should.

I hated that trade when it happened and even called in and argued with Bill Michaels(the big unit) about it who touted it as a massive defensive upgrade over Logan Schafer(he was not in any way an upgrade). But moreover, I followed prospects more closely then and was a fan of Haniger. I didn't think much of Banda in particular and I certainly didn't expect Haniger to become a stud, I just thought it was a pointless trade. It looks so much worse in hindsight. Imagine our OF right now with Haniger in RF and Banda in our farm system. No Davies, but we could all live with that. That said, bad trades happen. Just ask the Marlins. Edit-For the record, I was a huge Clint Coulter fan and went to quite a few Appleton games just to watch him play....so not pretending to be some clairvoyant. Imagine this year's rotation without Davies. Zach has actually been very valuable to the Brewers since coming over from Baltimore. Plus, if Haniger somehow stuck with the Brewers and became an everyday player, the odds of having both Yelich and Cain (both much better outfielders) both on this roster are essentially zero. As for Banda - isn't he recovering from TJ surgery all year in his age 25 season? I guess he's got being lefthanded going for him. Plus, Banda likely wouldn't have stayed in our farm system without being eligible for the rule 5 draft before he would have needed to be added to a crowded 40 man roster. Sometimes trades ultimately benefit both sides, which I think is the better take on what the Brewers were able to return in value for dealing Haniger and Banda by flipping Parra - I think the team that got completely jobbed in the whole process is the Dbacks, who also shipped out these same players a bit later in their development when they were actually considered to be borderline MLB regulars.

Because Junior's stuff plays best in the pen, too - and there are other options that wouldn't weaken two spots just to get Burnes out of the rotation. Burnes needs a sustained opportunity starting (he stopped starting games last May), and I think the best spot for him to do that is AAA right now. Shifting Burnes to the pen with how he's presently going would be a really bad idea - I don't want practically a 1HR/IP rate moving into a late inning role.

would be nice to get a few back next couple innings to make things interesting. Hope Burnes is taking note of that 3-2 changeup from Wacha against a LH hitter
