  1. Are you saying Miller would weaken them offensively at 2B? Seems like it would be a push at 2B offensively between Villar/Miller. No, I'm saying having to shift Villar from 2nd to SS to make room for Miller's bat at 2nd is a wash at best, considering Villar would be a downgrade defensively at SS. I think a move like that is rearranging three-legged deck chairs, especially because Villar hasn't sniffed SS since 2016. I'd rather Villar just stick at 2nd where he's gotten comfortable and see if Miller can avoid tripping over himself at SS for a few weeks getting roughly 1/2 the starts. Once Saladino is healthy, they need to decide between Saladino or Arcia to stay in Milwaukee. Then, adding a premium SS option via trade could shift Miller to Perez's role.
  2. The Brewers are dead last in offensive OPS from their SS position - 0.513...that's 72 points from 29th and a whopping 218 points from the league average!! Considering that's including 28 AB's from Saladino where he contributed a 0.952 OPS, Arcia and Sogard have been pitchers offensively for 2018. I don't care if Arcia is prime Ozzie Smith defensively - they need someone that can hit at that position. Right now SS is the one spot on the field where all of their healthy offensive options are brutal, and adding Miller to the mix at least gives them something. I don't count Villar as a SS option because moving him from 2nd to SS just would weaken 2B offensive output while also weakening SS defensively. Saladino was a pleasant surprise offensively during his brief stint before getting hurt - but expecting anything more than league average on offense from him is asking too much.
  3. IMO Miller is a great replacement for Perez on this roster longterm, but there are other guys on the roster who should be jettisoned/lose playing time first. In the short term he should absolutely replace Sogard on the roster simply to lose all goggles/no bat. Miller is an offensive upgrade that can play multiple positions in a pinch - not a premium defender but offensively a tremendous upgrade. And once Saladino is healthy enough to return, Sogard has abosolutely no business in either Milwaukee or CO Springs, so I hope he is simply cut to make room for Miller. If Arcia continues to struggle, I wouldn't mind giving Miller multiple starts at SS between now and the deadline - while bringing in Arcia as a late inning defensive replacement. That's at the max a 6-week gap to bridge between now and when the rubber hits the road on whether the Brewers trade for an impact player to man SS. If they get nuts and bring in Machado to play there, Arcia gets sent back to AAA to sort himself out offensively the rest of this season while Miller still has an important role that could be compared to a better offensive version of Todd Walker 2017 (and he'd be much more versatile defensively).
  4. The only things deGrom has the edge in are actual performance & health. Which is why I'd be very hesitant giving up a ton of value for Thor, despite his upside. Pitchers like him with a list of minor injuries tend to find a way to suffer a significant arm injury that leads to 1+ lost seasons, which would be crippling to a brewer team looking to rely on him before he gets too expensive and likely becomes a trade chip they would need to deal themselves. And I would say that degrom is the better pitcher and would provide the most value based on the facts that he apears to be less of an injury risk and stats say he is better at pitching.
  5. So choi is replaced by Thames on the mlb roster, while Miller hopefully can accommodate himself enough at SS to become a better hitting version of Perez. My hope with the current group of players in the organization is that miller replaces Sogard after 10 days, while arcia plays ss everyday until saladino comes off the dl - at that point Perez gets optioned or dfa'd. The sooner Sogard leaves the brewer organization, the better. Frankly 99% of brewer fans have to be tired of sewing him as either a mlb or aaa option at this point.
  6. Pina isn't even one of the top defensive catchers in his division, let alone all of mlb.
  7. I would say not really - with all the arms coming back from injury or slowly getting stretched back out between A+ and AA right now, it's going to start getting tough for some guys to reach perceived innings limit goals for the season at those levels. I'm thinking once the 1st half of the minor league season wraps up, there are going to be a slew of moves across the organization to try and get starting pitching prospects into situations where they can routinely go 6IP + depending on specific game pitch counts - even if that means demotions for some guys simply to get on a staff with lower priority pitchers. I also wouldn't be surprised if a trade or two by the deadline lessens the logjam of arms at those levels.
  8. Gotta get his trade value up before thames takes his place...
  9. Keep an eye on Hamels...he is having a solid season for the Rangers and he could be acquired for a reasonable prospect price if the brewers pick up most of his remaining salary over the next 1.5 seasons. I like the idea of adding a quality veteran LH starter to the rotation.
  10. Just knowing the fact that teams would basically have to include a top ten prospect to think about acquiring either of these two means that the mets would be stupid to trade either one. I just don't see either being moved, and it seems like this whole rumor got started by a New York paper making up a trade scenario between the two New York teams.
  11. Hiura is not Rickie Weeks defensively, and that's a good thing - all reports indicate his footwork, range, and arm (when healthy) are adequate to keep him at 2nd and maximize his offensive value there. I doubt he'd win any gold gloves, but he's not going to hurt you there, either.
  12. Since his promotion to Biloxi, Hiura has started all but one game and played 2B every time he was in the lineup - AA will be a great place for him to stick the rest of this season to get the innings he needs defensively.
  13. Id rather they slightly overpay for machado and add the premium bat to the lineup it desperately needs, than have to shell out what it would take to land either degrom or thor. Brewers have to find a consistent offense before even thinking of making a significant move for starting pitching.
  14. Is Braun unavailable today again? Perez hitting for choi here means they are done with him...
  15. Looking like a general nl central loss night across the board...cards played awful tonight even with molina and Martinez back, pirates bageled and cubs soundly beaten at home against the phils. Reds lose too. Baseball being baseball in early june
  16. Top pitchers (the true TOR talents that only injury risk is a question) don't fall to #21 in any draft. Just because a pitcher was rated #12 on a board for this year's draft doesn't make him a Chris Sale that has to be gobbled up if he drops into the 20s. Most drafts are lucky to have 2 pitchers in them that could one day be considered ace-caliber at the mlb level. So unless you are at the very top of a draft that has a verlander, kershaw, or baumgarner type talent that the whole baseball world knows is awesome, teams are probably better off going after position player talent early and play the pitching lotto in what I'd call the baseball draft mid rounds (3 through 10).
  17. The mlb draft is ultimately such a crapshoot, I'm not sure why people get up in arms over any pick, let alone assume there are set blue prints or strategies. Many times it has more to do with signability (especially with hs pitching) and which scout a gm trusts the most to go with "his guy".
  18. Very well said. while that's often true, that raw athlete was Lorenzo Cain Cain was also a 17th round draft pick, not a 1st
  19. What exactly did the Cubs just do? Hoerner seems like a crazy reach at 24 with everyone else on the board...
  20. It's tough when the knock on him is that he didn't continuously wow people every time he took the field - that's very tough to do in baseball regardless of how good a player you are and what level of competition you're facing, even with the 'made for MLB draft' showcase leagues for high schoolers nearing draft eligibility. I'm pumped the Brewers picked a guy that by all indications can stick at SS defensively, who has been on the prospect radar for years. I don't think there's such a thing as a "high floor/low ceiling" projection for a toolsy high school draftee with athleticism. Let him grow up a bit over the next few seasons and watch his stock take off.
