  1. Fixed. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  2. I don't think it's a serious comment. I do think the notion of starting now to cling to the glory of 2008 is funny, though.
  3. The Iowa Cubs have a sign very much like that, to display their starting lineups. (We stopped in Des Moines en route to Kansas City.)
  4. It's interesting you should mention 'revisionist.' In the special Gameday program sold at the NLDS games, I noticed that the Division Series history page included the 1981 playoff games. That was the year before I began following baseball closely, but I don't recall the use of the phrase 'division series' back then. I won't quarrel with it being a postseason appearance (if a less than fully orthodox one), but including it with "division series history" seemed a bit of a stretch to me. Perhaps some day there could be a banner listing the one-series-and-done playoff appearances (1981, 2008, maybe more someday) and then individual banners for bigger accomplishments (1982, hopefully more someday).
  5. I'm in exactly the same position as you: I can't go this weekend, and I'm a big fan of the Nov/Dec clubhouse sale for gifts (including for nephews). This press release advertising the 2006 clubhouse sale gives me hope that there will still be a separate event later this fall.
  6. In late spring (after all the snow finally melted), we found a roof rake in our garage that had been left behind by the previous owners of our house. It was up in the rafters, which is why we didn't see it (and perhaps why they didn't take it when they moved). Silver lining for this winter - we've got a roof rake in case we need it. Last winter would have been an excellent time to know that we had it, though.
  7. Like fortheloveofweeks, I'm a confirmed fan of the four seasons, even though some of the extremes are not always enjoyable. I really get wilted by heat and humidity, so I tend to not mind winter that much. But last winter began to challenge even me (check last year's winter weather thread for evidence). I got through it by choosing to view it as a weather adventure: how high can we pile shoveled snow in our rather small yard? or, how interesting, to have the snow piled at curbs so high that I have to actually step down to get from the snow piled at the bus stop to the bus door? As winter weather thread readers might recall from earlier this calendar year, I was rooting for Madison to break its season snowfall record, and then rooting for 100 inches - because why not at least have a record to show for all the hassles? I don't mind some snow, but I am certainly not in need of a new snowfall record anymore.
  8. The reference in the layaway thread to Da Yoopers' Christmas classic "Rusty Chevrolet" makes me wonder how early radio stations will switch over to all-Christmas. Didn't the "holiday" station in Milwaukee start the format on like November 1 last year? (which is too early even for me) That would be next weekend!
  9. Oh, yeah, the only "Christmas carol" I'm aware of that mentions good ol' ShopKo. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif That reminds me of a post I should make in the random thoughts thread.
  10. Semi-instant gratification? I suppose you might otherwise lose out on the so-called hottest toys or something like that. Just the word "layaway" instantly takes me back to the Janesville K-mart in the 1970s. I don't specifically remember my parents putting stuff on layaway, there or elsewhere, but that K-mart-and-layaway association is the leap my mind makes. What stores are bringing it back, besides K-mart (unless the K has been doing it all along)? I'm not asking to challenge, I'm just curious (and, I admit, kind of retail ignorant).
  11. During the National Anthem performance before Game 1 of the WS, did anyone else wonder if the performers can really continue to call themselves the Backstreet Boys?
  12. The specific phrase Wild Card Champions sounds contradictory to me. How can you be champion of the wild card? However, something that says "NL Wild Card 2008" would be fine with me; and like teatoe, I very much hope any commemoration has a different design than was used on the "1982 AL CHampions"...thing that is a visual abomination of an otherwise terrific accomplishment.
  13. I still think I could improve my confrontational skills, and it bugs me that I let his grouchy reaction even make me start to believe that my approach was too harsh. But thanks. One would think that at least we'll get a reprieve as fall turns to winter here. Last winter, "his seat" was packed with snow.
  14. I'd guess not, as the sale that in recent years has been scheduled closer to the holidays has not been in the Fan Zone, but in the clubhouse. The clubhouse sale also is a fundraiser for Brewers Charities, and I'm guessing the Fan Appreciation Sale is not. Of course, I predicted a few days ago that they wouldn't discount postseason gear until after Christmas - so you may not want to put money on my speculations.
  15. (just waiting for someone to ask if he had a cutter in his pitch repertoire..maybe one that cut like a knife. Sorry. Carry on with the real conversation.)
  16. 12 shy of first, as of Tuesday morning. R to the I to the O.
  17. Yeah, I was reasonably happy for Boston in 2004 (and not only because they beat STL), but by now, pfft. Hurray Rays. I hope no one got hurt in that post-game celebratory pile-on.
  18. At a Kohl's in Madison today, I scored a therma base playoff sweatshirt for $22.50 - in a women's size that fits me!
  19. Posting with tongue firmly in cheek, it'd be nice if Doug took bf.net merchandising issues under consideration when making a choice. Brenly-d (or Brenlied?) Macha-ed Showaltered (or Bucked?) Randolphed Tracy-d (or Tracied?) Valentined Narroned To me, none of these rolls off the tongue quite like Yosted did, or even Sveumed.
  20. I'd hate to imagine this board if something like this had happened to the Brewers. Well, on the bright side, we're not seeing endless pans to Red Sox fans whooping it up in Tropicana Field.
  21. They should maybe run that crawl a little bit more often. We've had TBS on for a while and only while I was typing this did the message scroll across.
  22. We got home from grocery shopping tonight to find Cigar/Cell Phone Guy (see reply 1596 earlier in this thread) sitting on our retaining wall again, smoking another cigar and yakking on his phone again. I asked why he was sitting on our property, and he got mad at me for interrupting his call. (After asking, I did add "sorry to interrupt your call.") After all, he just lives up the street and had to make this phone call! Then he stomped off. So, apparently he is a neighbor. I suspect his family has shooed him off their actual property if he's going to smoke and yak, but I don't think that means our yard should have to be his smoking/yakking grounds. If he were pacing on the sidewalk, I'd acknowledge that the sidewalk is no one's property, but he's definitely sitting on our property (albeit its edge). And apparently, how dare I interrupt him?
  23. I wondered about that play by Gross, too, though (like pitchleague) I could see where he was coming from, playing safe to allow "just" the one run. My earlier comment was about the Ortiz blast. We turned off the TV a while ago, so I've missed the recent fawning. Earlier tonight, Chip & Co. were listing the reasons why this just wasn't the same Boston team as earlier in the season, and it sounded to both me and the S.O. like they were making excuses. I suppose the TBS guys might like at least one more game to call (and FOX would surely rather broadcast a WS that has Red Sox Nation tuning in), but I'm finding myself very tempted to say "Boston bias" more than "crowd energy."
  24. Ohhh, not the best time for Grant Balfour to regress to the (small-sample) Grant Balfour of Milwaukee. And am I just grouchy about Boston, or was the TBS crew practically rejoicing after that big home run?
  25. Dennis Punzel of the Capital Times in Madison wrote an open letter back to Mark. Link (because it's a bit long to post here).
